Welcome to National Bird Day!
National Bird Day was created by Born Free USA (which was the Animal Protection Institute until 2007) and The Avian Welfare Coalition, to reduce the suffering of wild and captive birds. The day is meant to raise awareness of the destructive bird trade and cruel breeding mills, and to work for the improvement of conditions for birds already in captivity.
Millions of birds are captured in the wild each year, or are produced in captivity by breeders, who along with pet stores, sell them for profit. Many birds die in captivity before even being sold. Exotic birds have inherent behavioral and physical needs, which are often not met. They are still wild animals even though they are often treated as if they are not, and the confinement of birds to cages can lead to self-destructive behaviors. Buyers must not buy on impulse, and must be ready to keep a purchased bird for a lifetime. If buyers are not prepared to properly care for birds, birds may end up ignored in their cages, or left back into the wild to fend for themselves. They also may end up in overwhelmed bird sanctuaries.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018/01/04/taking-stock-of-acc-football-after-uneven-2017-season/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)
After a historic 2016 season that had an ACC team (Clemson) win the national title, Florida State win the Orange Bowl, and a 9-3 bowl record, there was only way to go and it was down.
As I predicted last year, for the ACC to remain at the top of college football was unsustainable. If fact in that article I said the top college football conference would probably be a yearly rotation. With 2 teams in the national title, we’ll give the SEC the top two teams, but the Big 10 had outstanding bowl season going 7-1. It’s debatable which of those two conferences was at the top in 2017
What we do know it wasn’t the ACC, and it was an uneven year at best. The conference didn’t bottom out like the Pac 12 who went an embarrassing 1-8 during bowl season, but the conference as a whole took a step back.
Florida State started the year in the year in the top 5, almost didn’t make a bowl game, and lost their head coach Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M. Louisville couldn’t cash in on having the uber-talented Lamar Jackson and still lost 5 games this year. The conference went 4-6 in bowl games, and was 10-14 against the other Power 5 conferences.
There were some positives though. Let’s start with Wake Forest. The Demon Deacon went 8-5 with a stirring bowl win over Texas A&M. From where Wake Forest was 3 years ago to now should prove to anyone in the ACC – upward mobility is possible.

Syracuse University Monitoring Winter Weather and Travel Conditions for Friday, January 5 (syr.edu)
Syracuse University is currently monitoring and evaluating potential weather conditions for Friday, January 5, 2018. As the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors is the University’s top priority, University leaders and public safety officials are assessing anticipated travel conditions to and from campus. This effort includes reviewing the most up-to-date National Weather Service data and forecasting, and consulting with an independent meteorologist about what to expect, particularly as it relates to the morning and afternoon commutes.
Based on current conditions, the University expects to remain fully open and operational on Friday, January 5, 2018.
Campus employees are expected to report to campus per their usual schedules. However, and as always, campus community members should be aware and take precautions when severe weather is in the area. If community members experience weather conditions that could affect their safety when traveling to and from the University, they are encouraged to use their judgement as it relates to their travel. Faculty and staff concerned about their safety should contact their department head or supervisor, respectively.
The University will continue to evaluate weather and road conditions through the evening and into the early morning hours. If a change in the University’s operating status becomes necessary, it will be announced:
-via the University’s Orange Alert system;
-on the University’s campus Twitter account @SUCampus;
-on news.syr.edu and syracuse.edu; and
-via the Syracuse University radio station WAER-FM88, as well as other local media outlets.
