College football's greatest teams: The best season from every ACC program (cbssports.com; Patterson)

...
Syracuse (1959)

Like Pitt, Syracuse has its football history forever linked to some of the game's greats. Jim Brown was an All-American as senior in 1956 and already racking up MVP and All-Pro honors in the NFL. With Ernie Davis, Syracuse had another superstar halfback ready to lead the offense. The heartbreaking end to Davis' story, dead at the age of 23 after a leukemia diagnosis in 1962, leaves us with only his stellar college career to remember him on the field. Davis' sophomore year, in 1959, finished with a claim to a national championship after beating Texas in the Cotton Bowl, a game where he took MVP honors. Davis won the Heisman Trophy in 1961, played a season of basketball for the Orange, wore No. 44 to carry on the tradition started by Brown and has his story is immortalized in Hollywood by the film, "The Express." Five Syracuse teams would later lay claim to conference titles, but not since Davis has there been a national championship or Heisman Trophy for the Orange.

Record: 11-0 | Final ranking: No. 1
Coach: Ben Schwartzwalder | MVP: HB Ernie Davis
Championships won: National (consensus)
Accolades: Consensus All-American (Roger Davis)
Did you know? Ger Schwedes and several other members of the 1959 team expressed some disappointment in the way the team was portrayed in the movie, "The Express." "As a work of fiction, the movie is terrific," Schwedes said, via the Post-Standard. "But that's not the way it was."

Which Syracuse Running Back Is Poised to Take Over the Position? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

It’s no secret that Syracuse’s offense has and always will revolve around the passing game for as long as Dino Babers is at the helm. But a supplementary running game is exactly what can take the offense to the next level.

The ground attack is going to be a crucial aspect for an Orange team that ranked closer to last than first in the nation in rushing yards last season. But next year could change some of that. Instead of hurrying to the line fresh off of a 25 yard completion and squandering a down by running it up the gut for no gain, that run play could be five, seven or even first down yardage.

Now to do that, the Orange has a couple of options to choose from. First is Eric Dungey. The quarterback has been amongst SU’s leading rushers every season at the helm and probably would have led the team all three seasons if not for injury. But there have never been doubts about Dungey’s abilities with his legs.

The real question for SU is who will emerge at running back. Neither Dontae Strickland nor Moe Neal have really taken over as “the guy” during their tenures together in the backfield. And while most of Dungey’s injuries have been unpredictable freak incidents, nothing suggests that he will suit up for a full season. Backup Tommy DeVito is more of a pocket passer than a dual threat QB, which means regardless of Dungey’s health, the Orange running backs will be a crucial part of a potent offense.

Rush on for casinos to start sports bets before football (localsyr.com; Parry; AP)

New Jersey gambling regulators are warning casinos to submit their plans for sports betting by Monday or risk not being approved in time for the start of football season.

David Rebuck, director of the state Division of Gaming Enforcement, told The Associated Press on Sunday he has directed the Atlantic City casinos to get their sports betting applications in by the end of the day on Monday. The division first notified the casinos of that timetable on July 9.

The warning also includes plans for internet and mobile sports betting, which no casino in New Jersey has yet been approved to offer.

Casinos that miss the deadline run the risk of not having their sports betting operations tested and approved in time for the start of football season in early September.

"They've got to give us a reasonable amount of time to evaluate and test all this," Rebuck said.

He said gambling operators have been aware since January that the gaming enforcement division would test and approve individual applications as they came in, and not all at once like it did with the start of internet gambling in 2013.

Rebuck said some casinos had not submitted their sports betting platforms for testing as of a week ago, while others are further along in the process.

The NFL season begins on Sept. 5 with a Thursday night game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. That is followed by a full slate of Sunday games on Sept. 9.

So far, four companies are offering sports betting in New Jersey: the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City, and Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport and the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, which began taking bets Saturday.

The two casinos and Monmouth Park took in $16.4 million in sports bets during the first two weeks it was legal in New Jersey in June.

Andrea Adelson from ESPN joins the show to discuss the ACC and other college football topics. Where will FSU finish? Is this the best Clemson defense ever? What about Boston College?

ACC Football Rx: ACC voices 2018 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From ESPN: 50 days, 50 voices: What we're looking forward to in 2018
It was tlndert for me, so I give you just the ACC/ND related parts (click link for the whole article):

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney: "We have the most experienced returning team since I have been the head coach at Clemson, with 61 lettermen and 17 starters coming back. With that type of experience, I am most excited to see the competition we will have at each position. So I am excited for the very beginning of practice in August."

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly: "The success of [quarterback] Brandon Wimbush and [defensive coordinator] Clark Lea stand out to me. Brandon has made major strides in all facets of his game and will benefit greatly from a second year in the offense. Clark is very clear in communication with our guys. He built an immediate culture of peer accountability within the unit that helps build pride in how they, each player does their job."

Boston College running back AJ Dillon: "I'm most excited to open up some eyes around the nation. I feel like we've got a lot of great pieces on this team, offensively and defensively, and I feel like we're going to shock a lot of people this year, so I'm excited for that. We've got a bunch of great senior leadership, and we've got guys who are really invested and working hard. The focus is indescribable. Everyone is dialed in right now, everyone is trying to get the most of each other. Walking around you have this positive vibe about this team and what we're going to bring to the table and you know everybody's working really hard. I've never been a part of anything like this before."

The biggest questions of the 2018 media days circuit (si.com; Staples)

Welcome to Talking Season, when everyone is undefeated and no question is too silly.

ACC

To Clemson coach Dabo Swinney: Will what happened in 2014 inform how you handle your quarterback competition?

In 2014, it was obvious to everyone at Clemson that Deshaun Watson was the quarterback of the future, but Swinney and his staff opted to start Cole Stoudt and bring along Watson slowly. Watson looked ready during a few series against Georgia in the season opener, and he eventually supplanted Stoudt during the Florida State game in Week 3. Still, Clemson lost that game in Tallahassee in overtime. A win likely meant an ACC title. Had Watson started that Florida State game, it probably never would have gone to overtime.

Kelly Bryant went 12–2 as Clemson’s starter last season, but Alabama exposed some of his limitations in the Sugar Bowl. Meanwhile, freshman Trevor Lawrence seems to have the higher upside even though he lacks experience. (Does any of this sound like Alabama last year after Tagovailoa arrived on campus? It should.)

Clemson’s roster is ready to compete for a national title. The defensive line might be the one of the best in college football history. The pieces are in place. So who will Swinney choose to lead the offense? He keeps saying that if the season started today, Bryant would have the job. He’ll probably say that again this week. But will he say that come September?

To Miami coach Mark Richt: Is the U back? Just kidding. But is Miami ready to take another big step?

The Hurricanes won the ACC Coastal but lost their regular-season finale at Pittsburgh and then looked far below Clemson’s level in a 35-point ACC title game loss. The Clemson game wasn’t representative of what the Hurricanes were all season, but that’s the kind of game Miami must win to make the playoff. So the question for Richt is less about talent—which Miami has in abundance—and more about rising to the occasion. And that’s probably not a question Richt can answer at media days. He’ll have to convince his team to answer it on the field.

Follow-up question for coach Richt: Any more sandwich tips?

The one from last year was tremendous.

I enjoyed the "Express" but being Hollywooded, ruins it for me.
