Black Thursday commemorates Thursday, October 24, 1929, a day when sellers traded close to thirteen million shares in panic on the New York Stock exchange, and endured five billion dollars in losses. Early in the day, eleven percent of the market's value was lost after heavy trading. As so much trading was going on, ticker tape reports were backed up and coming in late across the country, and investors had no way of knowing right away what stocks were valued at, which increased panic. Some of the days' panic was curbed when Richard Whitney, vice president of the Exchange, was backed by leading Wall Street investors, and placed bets on U.S. Steel and other blue chip stocks to raise confidence. This was successful to some extent, and the market recovered much of its loss, but the reprieve was short lived, and the market continued to collapse the following week. Black Thursday is seen as being the start of what was the worst stock market crash in United States history, which was followed by the Great Depression. The years prior to the crash and Great Depression were filled with rising stock prices, economic growth, and optimism. Some indication of a possible downturn was evident prior to October 24, but this was the real turning point.

Get to know Florida State, Syracuse football’s next opponent (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse football (3-4, 0-3 ACC) has another chance to earn its first Power-Five win of the season on Saturday.
The Orange travels to Tallahassee, Fla., for a Saturday matchup with Florida State (3-4, 2-3). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
A head coach on the hot seat?
Willie Taggart is just over midway through his second season at the helm of FSU, and his job security is already a prominent topic of conversation.
On Monday, the website Football Scoop reported that the school had engaged donors about potentially firing Taggart, indicating that Urban Meyer would be a top candidate, while recruiting website 247 Sports indicated FSU has had buyout discussions with Taggart’s agent, Jimmy Sexton.
On Tuesday, Florida State athletic director David Coburn addressed the reports with The Tallahassee Democrat, indicating they weren’t true.

With Syracuse visiting this weekend, FSU dealing with reports about Willie Taggart’s future (PS; Carlson)
When Syracuse travels to Florida State on Saturday the game will match two teams struggling to meet expectations and desperately in need of a win.
The Orange has failed to build on last year’s excellent season, while the issues for the Seminoles appear to run even deeper.
Florida State is struggling for a second straight year under head coach Willie Taggart, whose job status has already become the subject of public conjecture. Florida State is 3-4 so far this year and has already lost 11 games during Taggart’s two seasons. That’s the most losses for FSU since back-to-back 7-6 seasons under Bobby Bowden in 2006 and 2007.
The struggles haven’t played well with a Florida State fanbase that demands double-digit win totals annually and the drama bubbled over into the media this week.

Orange drop another
The Syracuse football team has lost back-to-back games following a 27-20 loss at home to Pittsburgh last weekend. The Orange are just 3-4 on the season, 0-3 in the ACC, 2-5 against the spread and 5-2 with the under.
Syracuse is struggling on offense and defense this year. The offense is putting up just 24.7 points and 371.1 yards per game while the defense is allowing 26.1 points and 418.9 yards per contest. Tommy DeVito has thrown for 1,635 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead the offense while Moe Neal is the leading rusher with 370 yards and three scores. Trishton Jackson is the leading receiver with 38 catches for 575 yards and six touchdowns.

The Seminoles have been struggling on defense, allowing 30.7 points and 458.7 yards per game. The offense is near the middle of the pack, averaging 28.6 points and 407 yards per contest. Cam Akers is leading the offense with 773 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. James Blackman has thrown or 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns while Tamorrion Terry is the leading receiver with 27 catches for 522 yards and six scores.

Florida State looking to return pass rush to early-season form against Syracuse (tallahassee.com; Weiler)
By the time Florida State takes on Syracuse Saturday, it will have been 35 days since an FSU defensive lineman recorded a sack.
The Seminoles started the season strong in the sack department with 15 sacks in their first four games. Since then, they have managed just two sacks in their last three games, both recorded by redshirt freshman linebacker Amari Gainer in FSU's win over NC State.
FSU (3-4, 2-3 in ACC) enters the 3:30 game against the Orange (3-4, 0-3) with no sacks over its last two games, losses to Wake Forest and Clemson.
Although those two offensive lines have allowed a combined 13 sacks in 14 games this season, it's the second straight season in which the Seminoles have had a sackless streak of at least two games.
Prior to 2018, that hadn't happened at FSU since 2014.
"I think a lot of it is based on max protection. People are keeping a lot of guys in because we have been successful getting to the quarterback," FSU defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett said.
"But we’re going to keep trying to find ways to get there because everybody likes getting sacks. All our guys like getting sacks, so we’re going to keep trying to find ways and we will, and we will."
Luckily for the Seminoles' pass rush, Syracuse may be the perfect team to be playing this weekend.

Justin Barron talks big plays and brutal stiff arms: Syracuse football recruiting roundup (PS; Bailey)
This week’s Syracuse football recruiting roundup is led by multiple highlight plays from 2020 commit Justin Barron.
Barron, a three-star athlete from Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT, caught five passes for 99 yards and one touchdown on Saturday, including an impressive catch-and-run that featured multiple broken tackles and a brutal stiff arm.
Barron says his stiff arm is the part of his game that has improved the most this year.
“I’ve done it so many times this year and it’s been successful every time."
Through six games, Barron has caught 22 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers.1... @justinbarron22 @BWardDCoord
— SupremeAthleteCT (@SupremeAthlete_) October 22, 2019
The 6-foot-4 receiver is averaging 18 yards per catch this season, and says the key is when he’s getting the ball.
“What’s been helpful for me is my QB getting me the ball early in the play so I can catch and turn and get face-to-face with the defender,” Barron said. “Doing this has been really helpful for me because it gives me an opportunity to make somebody miss.”

Meet at the QB: Syracuse's protection struggles contributing to disappointing season (auburnpub.com; Ritzel)
Through seven games, Syracuse football coach Dino Babers is still trying to figure out how to better protect his quarterbacks.
So far this season, no team in the country has been worse. The Orange have already allowed 35 sacks, which is the highest in Division I college football and four worse than any other team in the ACC.
Even dating back to his two seasons at Bowling Green, Babers' teams have been prone to allowing sacks. In 2015, Babers' last season with the Falcons, Bowling Green allowed 38 sacks in 14 games, the highest in the Mid-American Conference. The year before that, Bowling Green was fourth-worst in the MAC in sacks allowed.
Those troubles have carried over to Syracuse. In his first three seasons with the Orange, Babers' teams finished third-, third-, and second-worst in the ACC in sacks allowed.
That trend has worsened in Year No. 4. Syracuse is averaging five sacks allowed per game, which figures to 60 over a full 12-game season. The last Division I team team allow 60 or more sacks over 12 games was Rutgers University in 2010.
Boston College, Syracuse's opponent at home on Nov. 2, has allowed only three sacks this season.
Babers pointed to a lack of experience among the offensive line as one of the culprits. Two seniors — left guard Evan Adams and right tackle Ryan Alexander — have made at least six starts, but right guard Dakota Davis is a redshirt sophomore and left tackle Carlos Vettorello is a redshirt freshman. Neither started a game prior to 2019.

Syracuse Football: Florida State won’t beat the Orange on Saturday (itlh; Esden Sr)
Our Paul A. Esden Sr. explains why Florida State won’t beat the Syracuse football team on Saturday. Here’s what he means plus the top keys to the game.
Too little too late, that is the message from the Pittsburgh loss for Syracuse football. Every fan is well versed in the woulda, coulda, shoulda mentality and generally speaking it serves little use. In search of positives let’s dip our toe into it just this once.
Football generally comes down to a few plays, for the Orange last week it came down to two plays that would have swayed the balance. A missed field goal and another back-breaking trick play.
It is hard to fault our Lou Groza award-winning kicker (maybe the best kicker in college football) but a miss is a miss.
The trick play goes to a gap in coaching philosophy. Dino Babers pretty much said that he would give them that when referring to NC State trick play.
Well apprarently they did not spend a lot of time focusing on ‘Do you Job’ as the defensive breakdown on this play was of epic proportions. Dino’s laissez-faire attitude may have actually encouraged Pitt to run the play.
Both of the plays go the other way Cuse wins this game 23-20. A game of inches.

Syracuse Football: Orange fans are split on Tommy DeVito, Clayton Welch (itlh; Esden Jr)
Syracuse football fans aren’t sure what the Orange should do at quarterback. Here are the fan’s reactions to Tommy DeVito or Clayton Welch.
Tommy DeVito or Clayton Welch?
It’s a question Syracuse football fans would’ve never imagined they’d be asking themselves after the first seven games of the 2019 season.
Yet that’s the dire situation the Orange find themselves in.
If the decision was between two healthy bodies, the answer to the question is simple says head coach Dino Babers: it’s Tommy DeVito.
Although DeVito’s health is no guarantee. He’s been banged up probably all season, but specifically, we know he got hurt in the Holy Cross game on September 28. Since his injury, he’s played every game but hasn’t looked like himself.
Since the game vs the Crusaders, DeVito 401 passing yards, one touchdown, with a 61.1 percent completion percentage. On top of his paltry stats, the Orange are also in the midst of a two-game losing streak.

Eagles Face Difficult Path to Bowl Eligibility in Final Five Games - The Heights (bcheights.com; Smart)
Through two weeks, Boston College football seemed well on its way to another bowl. The Eagles took care of business against a Virginia Tech team that was favored in the season opener, then rolled past Richmond. With Kansas and Rutgers on tap next, BC had a not-so-slim chance of starting the year 4-0, which would place head coach Steve Addazio’s team two-thirds of the way to bowl eligibility.
Then the Kansas disaster happened, and the Eagles saw their projected win total, per ESPN’s FPI, slip to just four wins (4.4). Now, six weeks later, we find Addazio’s team at 4-3 after a bounce-back victory over North Carolina State, in which BC used a dominant rushing attack and a stifling defensive effort to come away with a 45-24 win. The Eagles now have five games left to find two wins, and unfortunately for Addazio, the schedule isn’t particularly forgiving.
Per ESPN, the Eagles have the sixth-hardest remaining strength of schedule in Division I football, and it’s 24 spots higher than any other ACC team (Duke is 30th). Not only does BC play a pair of College Football Playoff participants from last year, four of its final five games are also on the road. The Eagles’ inability to beat the Jayhawks and back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and Louisville by a combined five points are haunting Addazio and Co., but while FPI projects them to finish 5-7, it seems that there are at least two—if not three—potential wins left on the schedule. Here’s a look at who BC has left to play, and what it’ll take for the Eagles to go bowling for the sixth time in seven years under Addazio.
Oct. 26 at Clemson (FPI Chance to Win: 2 percent)
For all the hubbub around the Tigers (7-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast) dropping to No. 4 in the national polls despite starting the year 7-0, Clemson is still a force to be reckoned with and it’ll be awfully hard for BC to stay in this game. The Tigers have won 40 of their last 41 games at home, and bring in both the conference’s top-ranked offense and defense into this matchup.
Dabo Swinney is 10-1 as a head coach against the Eagles, and his team has won the last eight matchups, with the lone loss coming back in 2010. Last year’s meeting was highly anticipated, as BC was No. 17 at the time, but once Anthony Brown went down, all hope was basically lost en route to a 27-7 loss, where the Eagles managed just 113 yards of offense. As 34.5-point underdogs, BC will hope to keep it close for at least a few quarters, but it’ll likely drop back to .500 and hope to avoid any injuries.
Nov. 2 at Syracuse (41.1 percent)

What Virginia is saying about Louisville football ahead of Saturday's game (C-J; Yates)
Louisville football was simply overpowered by Clemson this past Saturday in Cardinal Stadium, and now turned its attention to Virginia.
The Cavaliers are arguably the second best team in the ACC behind the Tigers and a team that takes pride in playing tough, defensive football.
Outside of the Clemson game, the Cardinals have had no issues scoring points this year and the 45 points the Tigers scored doesn't fully show the improved play of the defense.
Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall and the staff are keeping a close eye on several things heading into Saturday's game.
What You Need To Know: How to watch Louisville football host Virginia on Saturday for homecoming
What were your impressions of Louisville and the up and down they’ve had the last couple of weeks, was Clemson that overwhelming defensively or did they just have an off day?
Mendenhall: "I think Clemson is that overwhelming defensively just by personnel. I had a nice talk with David Cutcliffe before the game and we were talking about his game against Alabama early in the year, and there are some programs right now that have amazing talent or more of it. Those are two things that could be players that are better while they’re playing and then it could be the volume of players that are better.
Clemson has both very good players and they have great depth. I was actually impressed with Louisville’s game especially defensively 17-3 going late through the third quarter and they did a nice job taking the ball away and holding Clemson in relative check offensively. And then things kind of slipped away from them as sometimes it does if there’s a talent or execution differential as the game goes on and it wasn’t until late until that happened.
So the score didn’t necessarily reflect how three quarters of that game went. Louisville is certainly not struggling offensively. The Clemson game or barring the Clemson game, if you just looked at points, their quarterback got hurt yet the scheme and what Scott has already done there is, I think, really impressive, how hard they’re playing, their culture. And so they’re certainly capable of scoring on anyone at any time at any quarter at any minute no matter where they play in the country. So very dynamic offensively, and I would certainly capable and active defensively, and right now they’re probably more known for their offense explosion and firepower and that side seems to be performing a little in their first year at a higher level. That doesn’t mean their defense isn’t capable and won’t catch up....
Tar Heels' freshman Sam Howell moving to top of ACC's QBs (apnews.com; Odum)
Sam Howell has moved well past freshman-level studies at North Carolina.
He is playing his way to the top of the class of Atlantic Coast Conference’s quarterbacks.
Howell leads the ACC with 20 touchdown passes after tying the North Carolina record with five in last week’s 43-41, six-overtime loss to Virginia Tech. He passed for 348 yards with no interceptions and was named the conference’s top quarterback of the week for the third time this season.
For North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo, it’s more proof that Howell is no ordinary first-year quarterback. He said Howell is “beyond the 101 stage” of lessons.
“I mean, Sam, he studies the game, he cares, he’s passionate about it,” Longo said Monday. “That’s all part of what makes him as good as he is right now, and we still have things we need to get better at. But I really like where the process is and I like the fact that he accepts just about every challenge I give him.”
Howell was a unanimous selection for the ACC’s top freshman of the first half of the season in balloting by The Associated Press writers covering the conference. It was the only unanimous vote of nine categories.
He has set a school record for touchdown passes by a freshman while throwing only three interceptions. He is a key to coach Mack Brown’s rebuilding effort at North Carolina (3-4, 2-2 ACC) entering Saturday’s game against Duke (4-3, 2-2).
In addition to Howell’s sweep of the top freshman vote, here are some of the ACC’s best — and worst — of the season so far in voting by AP writers:

Against the Odds: Pitt favored against Miami (cardiachill.com; Whaley)
Fresh off a win against Syracuse this past weekend, Pitt takes the field against Miami this weekend. The Panthers get the game at home and are considered a small favorite.
Pitt opened as a three-point favorite and that spread is, as of now, up to five in most places.
This game is not viewed by fans as an easy one, despite the fact that Miami is 3-4 and fresh off a loss to formerly last place Georgia Tech this weekend. It seems like a difficult game to predict just because we know Miami has speed and enough talent to win. That was evidenced in the team’s 17-9 upset win over Virginia a few weeks ago.
Both teams bring pretty good defenses into the game and this has the look of a low-scoring contest. Pitt certainly comes in with the better resume here but that’s not enough to make me feel too comfortable just yet.
What’s your take on the line?

Louisville football: How the Cards can take down Virginia (bigredlouie.com; Reddington)
Louisville football goes head-to-head with ACC Coastal leading Virginia on Saturday. How can the Cards pick up their fifth win of the season?
The Louisville football season has already arguably been a success. They have doubled last season’s win total, fans are back to feeling good about where this program is headed, and there are players on this Cardinal team that have you excited for college football every single week.
But things could go get so much better. Louisville now has five games left, all against beatable opponents and are just two games away from becoming bowl eligible. The thing is, all of those teams can likely beat them as well.
Louisville’s next five in order: Virginia, Miami, North Carolina State, Syracuse, and Kentucky. All of these teams have bowl chances but none of them are ranked. Which puts Louisville in a position to control their own destiny. The team that comes into Cardinal Stadium this weekend is arguably the best left on the schedule.

2019 Week 9 Factoids
From the Weekly ACC Media Release:
Drama:
So enjoy another dramatic finish to an ACC football game this weekend!Through eight weeks of the season, the ACC is the most competitive conference in the country. The average margin of victory in ACC games is 13.9 points, the fewest of any Power 5 conference. More than half (14) of the ACC's 27 conference games have been decided by eight points or less, the highest percentage (.519) of any Power 5 conference. Eight ACC games have been decided by three points or fewer, the most of any Power 5.
Including non-conference games, Miami and North Carolina have each played six games decided by one possession. Pitt and Wake Forest have played five games decided by eight points or fewer and Florida State and Virginia Tech have played four. North Carolina's four losses have come against teams that are a combined 24-3.
FPI:
Of course, there are only two other P5 conferences that even have more than 13 teams - the Big Ten and the SEC. So really, what we're saying here is that both of those leagues have at least one team below 75th - but the ACC doesn't.In ESPN's Football Power Index, 13 of the ACC’s 14 teams are ranked in the top 75 of FPI, the most of any conference. FPI is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season.

ABC News Anchor David Muir buys $7 million house on Skaneateles Lake (PS; Breidenbach)
ABC News Anchor David Muir has purchased a home on Skaneateles Lake, according to records filed with the Onondaga County Clerk’s office.
A deed filed Oct. 9 shows a $7 million purchase price for 3406 West Lake Road, in Skaneateles. The property was sold from one limited liability company to another – Cinquee LLC to 3406 WLR, LLC.
Muir signed a $3.5 million mortgage document as manager of 3406 WLR, LLC. The mortgage documents say it is a second home.
Muir said that he bought the house because it was a rare opportunity to save an historic home. Muir answered questions by email because he is busy editing an upcoming story.
“This job takes me all over the world, and I can’t think of a better place to catch my breath," Muir said.
The house is a 4,300-square foot, one-family house on about 6 acres on Skaneateles Lake.
The house has six bedrooms, two kitchens, three bathrooms and one fireplace. It was built in 1890, records show.
It is assessed at a full market value of about $2.5 million, records show.
