Welcome to National American Teddy Bear Day!

In November 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid hunter, went on a hunting excursion organized by Mississippi's governor, Andrew Longino, in Smedes, Mississippi. Roosevelt was accompanied by some aides, other hunters, and reporters, as well as a hunting guide, Holt Collier, and his hunting dogs. After a few days without success, Roosevelt and the hunting dogs were on the trail of a black bear. Having thought that they had lost the bear, Roosevelt went back to camp, but Collier and his dogs kept searching. Collier and his dogs found the 235 pound bear, and the dogs circled it and began biting and attacking it. The bear killed one of the dogs, and Collier clubbed the bear over the head and tied it to a tree. He bugled for Roosevelt, who found the bear mauled from the the dogs, and refused to shoot it. He also forbade anyone else from shooting it, but as the bear was so injured, he had the bear put out of its misery by having it be killed with a hunting knife.

A few days later, a cartoon titled "Drawing the line in Mississippi", which showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear, was drawn by Clifford Berryman, and appeared in the Washington Post. Rose and Morris Mitchom, store owners in New York City, saw the cartoon and were inspired to create the teddy bear, which they originally called "Teddy's bear". They eventually founded the Ideal Toy Company which produced the bears, and even allegedly wrote to Roosevelt asking his permission to use his name for their bear. About the same time as the Mitchom's debuted their bear, Richard Steiff of Germany created a stuffed teddy bear as well, which also became very popular.

Duke football looking to get right against hapless Syracuse team (dukechronicle.com; Kolin)

Um Evan, isn't Duke hapless as well?

Duke's chance at a bowl game is at the brink of extinction.

After three consecutive losses—most recently a 38-7 home drubbing at the hands of then-No. 15 Notre Dame—the Blue Devils need two wins over their final three games to secure bowl eligibility, with their first chance at a victory coming against Syracuse this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium.
i.gif

But to Blue Devil head coach David Cutcliffe, clinching a bowl bid is the last thing on Duke’s mind right now.

“We've got three games left and we've got to try to go 1-0 this week,” Cutcliffe said. “I’m not worried about three games. So the focus is going to be trying to be the best Duke team we can be this week.”

Luckily for the Blue Devils, they have a good chance of securing that undefeated record for the weekend. Despite entering the 2019 campaign a a member of the preseason AP Top 25, the Orange (3-6, 0-5 in the ACC) have yet to win a game in conference play this year. Duke (4-5, 2-3) currently sits as 9.5-point favorites heading into Saturday's contest.

No matter how much Syracuse has struggled this season, though, Cutcliffe still has immense respect for its program, as well as head coach Dino Babers.

“Babers is not only an outstanding football coach, he is an outstanding man,” Cutcliffe said. “He is a person I like, I respect. There is no accident to why the culture changed at Syracuse. Special team a year ago. We’re all in a little bit of the same boat… You might think, well ‘why the record?’ Well, this is a tough league.”

Wax leads Mount St. Joseph past Tucker’s Calvert Hall: Syracuse football recruiting roundup (PS; Burrows)

This week’s Syracuse football recruiting roundup is led by running back Marlowe Wax and Mount St. Joseph taking down Sean Tucker and Calvert Hall.

Wax led the Gaels with 84 yards and a TD on just 13 carries in a 35-0 playoff win over the Cardinals. Wax is up to 1,187 yards and 17 TDs on the season while averaging 7.7 yards per carry, according to MaxPreps.

The win over Calvert Hall puts Mount St. Joseph in the MIAA Class A championship game against McDonogh on Saturday. McDonogh beat the Gaels, 14-7, earlier this year.

Scroll below to see how some of Syracuse football’s 2020 recruiting class is doing during their senior seasons.

Note: Not all of Syracuse’s 14 commits for 2020 are shown below. Stats are sometimes unavailable for some of SU’s 2020 class, either because they haven’t been provided by the school or because they aren’t always available for offensive linemen or defensive players.

Steve Mahar Jr., TE, Aquinas Institute (NY)
Stats: DNP with lower-body injury
Last game: McQuaid Jesuit, Aquinas Institute 27
Next game: None (end of season)

Sean Tucker, RB, Calvert Hall (MD)

Stats: 19 carries for 51 yards; 1 catch for 9 yards
Last game: Mount St. Joseph 35, Calvert Hall 0
Next game: Calvert Hall vs. Loyola Blakefield

On Saturday we lost our playoff game but I reached a major rushing milestone. I exceeded the 1,000-yard mark and with one more important game coming up in a few weeks my focus is to finish strong!

Syracuse football was one of the remarkable turnaround stories during the 2018 season and the Orange have become one of the more remarkable turnaround stories during the 2019 season… only in the opposite direction many assumed coming into the year.

Despite the program backsliding from their first 10 win season in nearly two decades to their current mark of 3-6 though, athletic director John Wildhack told a local radio station that he’s firmly behind the team and head coach Dino Babers no matter how difficult things have been on the field this year.

“This year is frustrating, no question,” Wildhack said, according to Syracuse.com. “I think this program is in a much better place than it was three or four years ago. I give Coach Babers a lot of credit. We’ll continue to work to analyze what we need to do to make the program better, to make it successful. I’m confident we’ll do that.

“I honestly believe, and I deeply believe, that we are on the right trajectory to where we can be consistently good every year. That’s what we want.”

The Orange being consistently good every year is obviously a great goal to have but something the school has struggled to do for many years on the gridiron. There was hope that Babers was the guy to help raise the floor, so to speak, of the program when hired and he put together a remarkable 2018 season that was a great indication of that — leading to a lucrative contract extension last December designed to keep bigger programs from plucking their head coach.

Louisville football: 3 things to watch vs. North Carolina State (BRL; Reddington)

After a blowout loss to Miami, Louisville football will look to bounce back and get bowl eligible on the road against North Carolina State. Here are three things to watch on Saturday.

For Louisville football, it’s all about moving on.

We know what took place last weekend against Miami last weekend, in what was undoubtedly the hardest loss to stomach this season, but with three games remaining and the chance to go to a bowl, the focus has to be on what’s to come and not what’s happened.

An opportunity to do just that comes this weekend when Louisville travels to Raleigh to take on North Carolina State in a game where they will be favored on the road for the first time under Scott Satterfield. They’ll play a team coming off three straight losses, all by 21 or more trying to figure things out with a young quarterback.

North Carolina State was more than formidable last season. They won nine games and beat Louisville 52-10 at Cardinal Stadium. But the loss of now Bengals quarterback Ryan Findlay and multiple other players have put this team in a position that they haven’t been in for a few years. The Wolfpack have eclipsed the seven-win make in each of the last five seasons, winning nine games in each of the last two.

Things have been very different in 2019. A season that began at a promising 4-2 is now a pressure-filled 4-5. NC State defeated Syracuse, who is winless against power 5 teams on October 10th. Since then, they lost at Boston College 45-24, at Wake Forest 44-10 and at home to Clemson 55-10.

Virginia Tech football: Hokies win over Wake Forest continues impressive turnaround (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

for Hokie Mark

We all remember Friday night, September 27, 2019. The Hokies had a rare Friday night game at Lane Stadium. As usual, the atmosphere was electric for a night game and we were all expecting the Hokies to improve to 3-1 on the season, and evening their mark in the ACC to 1-1.

Well, it didn’t quite work out that way.

After the Hokies took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, things went downhill fast and Tech ended up suffering its worst loss in 45 years, falling to the Blue Devils 45-10. Look, this wasn’t a loss to Clemson, this was Duke....football.

No disrespect to Duke, but Virginia Tech does not get blown out, at home, against Duke. That led many in Hokie Nation saying changes needed to made immediately. And for good reason. The Hokies had/have the worst recruiting class in the ACC for 2020 and fans were left searching the schedule for games this team could win. Another bowl appearance was out of the question.

Quietly, coaches and players weren’t panicking and went back to work. Head coach Justin Fuente apologized to his team and they had his back.

The next week, the Hokies went to Miami and no one expected them to win. Fuente made a change at quarterback, bringing in redshirt sophomore Hendon Hooker and the Hokies won a thriller in Coral Gables, 42-35.

They returned home and looked pedestrian in a 34-17 win over FCS Rhode Island to move to 4-2. North Carolina came to Blacksburg on October 19 and the Hokies won an instant classic, 43-41, that went into six overtimes until redshirt freshman Quincy Patterson won it for the Hokies.

Here’s What Has to Happen for the ‘Canes in Order to Win the ACC Coastal (stateoftheu.com; Sherry)

Per usual, there isn’t a clear favorite in the Coastal division — Miami is right in the mix. Their chances are slim, but a trip to the ACC Championship is still attainable if the stars align.

Coastal ‘chaos’ is in peak form in late-2019 — not a surprise to some. Despite losing to inferior Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech teams, the ‘Canes defeated Virginia during their homestand and pulled together to beat Pittsburgh and Florida State on the road — not to mention their dismantling of Louisville on senior day.

So, what has to happen for Miami in order to reach the ACC Championship?

Virginia and Pittsburgh need to lose once more in conference play, as Miami has the tie-breakers over them. The ‘trickier’ teams to predict are Virginia Tech and North Carolina — both of which are Coastal ‘contenders’ who have the edge over Miami.

Virginia Tech has 3 games remaining on the year — all coming against ACC-opponents — which should bode well for Miami’s chances. However, their opponents in those upcoming games are Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Virginia. It’s doubtful that Georgia Tech will upset the Hokies, but it’s the kind of help that Miami desperately needs.

Virginia has 1 in-conference game remaining — coming against rival Virginia Tech in their regular-season finale. This makes Miami’s path extremely delicate, as they need Virginia Tech to win this game, but will be relying on both Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh to hand the Hokies losses.

Wake-Clemson matchup headlines ACCs 12th week (ESPN; AP)

Here are things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 12:

GAME OF THE WEEK

Wake Forest at No. 3 Clemson. Both teams might be better off if the Tigers (10-0, 7-0, No. 3 CFP) beat the Demon Deacons (7-2, 3-2). A Wake Forest win would almost certainly knock Clemson out of the playoff picture and put the Atlantic Division-champion Tigers on track for the Orange Bowl if they win the league title game. Wake Forest's only shot at the Orange Bowl is for Clemson to make the playoff, leaving the Demon Deacons as league's second-highest-ranked team. Wake Forest was eliminated from the division race with its loss last week at Virginia Tech.

BEST MATCHUP

Georgia Tech offense vs. Virginia Tech defense. Slowly but steadily, the rebuilding Yellow Jackets have shown improvement with the ball, gaining at last 345 total yards in three of their last four games after barely topping 300 in their first five. That progress will be tested by a resurgent Virginia Tech team that has won four of five to vault into Coastal Division contention and held powerful Wake Forest to a season-low -- by far -- 301 total yards last week.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

There's still no clarity in the Coastal Division race, which is led by Virginia (7-3, 5-2) with Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh also at the two-loss mark and three others -- Miami, North Carolina and Duke -- each having three league losses. Ten league games involving at least one Coastal team remain, and according to the league, there remain 1,024 possible permutations for the seven teams in the final standings.

LONG SHOT

Could Syracuse keep it closer than the 10-point spread at Duke? The Orange (3-6, 0-5) are the only ACC team winless in league play and this week's visit to Durham, North Carolina, might give them their best shot at a conference victory. They'll have to find a way to keep the Blue Devils' blitzers away from QB Tommy DeVito. Syracuse ranks last in the Bowl Subdivision, allowing 5 sacks per game.

IMPACT PLAYER

Look for Florida State WR Tamorrion Terry to make some big plays and put up some big numbers this week against Alabama State of the FCS. Terry had career bests with seven catches for 156 yards in a victory over Boston College, and his 74-yard touchdown was his school-record fourth of at least 70 yards in his two-year career. He also has six grabs that have covered at least 60 yards apiece.
...

Under pressure: Defenses thriving in sack-happy ACC (stltoday.com; AP; Graves)

Each week, the Pittsburgh coaching staff jots down a number representing the amount of sacks they’d like the Panthers to have during a given game. Sophomore defensive lineman Jaylen Twyman would prefer to keep the number a secret.

Not because it’s so ambitious it’s almost impossible to reach. Quite the opposite.

“It's too low,” Twyman said. “We aim for the stars. Me, myself, I don't set goals because I'm trying to break the bank.”

No team in the Atlantic Coast Conference cashes in more than the Panthers. Pitt is averaging 4.44 sacks per game, second in the country only to Ohio State. The Panthers are quick, belligerent and relentless. They’re hardly the only ones in the sack-happy ACC, where six teams rank in the top 20 nationally in taking down the quarterback, the most of any Power Five conference.

The defense-oriented Big Ten has four schools in the top 20. The Big 12 and SEC just one a piece. The pass-centric Pac 12? None.

“We throw the ball a lot in this league,” North Carolina coach Mack Brown said. “And I think there’s a lot better teams in this league than perceived because a lot of us are so much alike that so many games are coming down to the end.”

Asked if the common thread in the ACC is great coaching, Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi — who developed a reputation as one of the most aggressive defensive coordinators in the country during his tenure Michigan State before becoming the head coach at Pitt nearly five years ago — shook his head.

Virginia Tech football: Hokies score major commitment in 2021 QB Dematrius Davis (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

Remember watching him play in the state championship game when Dorian Hewett was an SU verbal (or close to it). Really impressive player.

The Virginia Tech Hokies and head coach Justin Fuente picked up a huge commitment on Wednesday night from four-star quarterback Dematrius Davis from North Shore High in Houston, Tx.
COMMITTED!
— Dee (@Dematrius09) November 14, 2019
Davis visited Blacksburg on Saturday for the Hokies’ impressive 36-17 win over Wake Forest. Not only was Lane Stadium an electric atmosphere, Tech also played its most complete game of the season on both sides of the ball. And Davis noticed.

While Davis is a member of the class of 2021 and we have just over a year until the early signing period, quarterbacks who commit early don’t often back out of their pledges unless there are things like a coaching change, etc.

So, yes, the Hokies must keep Davis in the fold, and that will undoubtedly be Fuente’s No. 1 priority over the next year.

What kind of player is Virginia Tech getting in Davis?

At 5’11”, 190 pounds, Davis is a dual threat. He possesses a strong arm who has shown to be accurate to all levels of the field. He is a terrific athlete who has outstanding pocket awareness for such a young player. Davis had a standout sophomore year, racking up numerous honors en route to leading his team to a state title.

ACC vs SEC - 2019 so far (11/12/19)

Any internet fan can tell you that the SEC is strong because of its great non-conference win%, while the ACC is weak for the same reason... but is that really true?

Two things prompted me to do this analysis:
1. The SEC suffered two more G5 losses last weekend, and
2. I noticed the ACC and SEC are tied (2-2) head-to-head

factoids - 2019 Week 12 (RX; HM)

factoids - 2019 Week 12

From the ACC weekly media guide:

Clemson has clinched the ACC Atlantic Division title and will play in the ACC Football Championship Game... The Tigers are the first ACC team to represent either division in five consecutive ACC Championships Games. [In total,] Clemson earned a berth in the title game for the seventh time, passing Virginia Tech (six) for the most total appearances.
In the Coastal Division, Virginia leads with a 5-2 record, but both Virginia Tech and Pitt are lurking at 3-2... Virginia is off this weekend and has just one conference game remaining vs. Virginia Tech [VT still must visit Georgia Tech this weekend, then host Pitt the following weekend before the game at UVA - but if the Hokies win out, they would be the Coastal division champs]... Virginia Tech has won four of its last five... The Hokies' only loss in the last five weeks was a 1-point decision at Notre Dame...
Thursday night’s clash between North Carolina and Pitt (8pm EST on ESPN) could also impact the ACC Coastal division race (in particular, Pitt would be virtually eliminated by a loss).

What if Clemson is selected for the CFP playoffs and there isn't another ranked ACC team to send to the Orange Bowl? VT beat writer Mike Niziolek asked that question... here is the reply he got:

Interesting note from CFP conference call tonight on ACC/Orange Bowl, if Clemson makes it to the playoff, the Orange Bowl is supposed to take "highest ranked ACC team not ranked in the top four", but they won't keep ranking teams even if there isn't another ACC team in top 25 pic.twitter.com/dtotCj7wwo
— michaelniziolek (@michaelniziolek) November 13, 2019

...so it would be up to the bowl itself to select whichever ACC team they would want at that point.

Related: AllSportsDiscussion has on-going coverage of who's in the chase for the Orange Bowl.
__________

From Disney Q4 Earnings Report:

Cable Networks revenues for the quarter increased 20% to $4.2 billion and operating income decreased $19 million to $1.3 billion. Lower operating income was due to a decrease at ESPN... due to increases in programming, production and marketing costs... driven by rate increases for NFL, college sports and MLB programming. Affiliate revenue growth was due to an increase in contractual rates and the launch of the ACC Network...
So there you have it: the ACCN is already profitable for Disney.

Dinner’s in the bag at Liverpool’s Boil It (Dining Out Review) (PS; Paventi)

It took two days of handwashing to get the smell of cayenne pepper off our hands. After an hour of peeling shrimp and cracking crab legs at Boil It in Liverpool, we consider it collateral damage in a quest to consume the treasures of the sea before us.

Syracuse joined a national dining trend rather quickly last fall as two boiled seafood restaurants opened within a matter of weeks. Boil It was the second of the two, debuting in November 2018 in its spot just south of the Liverpool village line. Storming Crab on Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse opened its doors in September 2018. King Seafood, the newcomer of the trio, opened in Mattydale in June.

Boil It uses market pricing to dictate the costs on its menu; a board listing the day’s prices hangs in the back corner of the dining room. Diners can build their own boil from scratch, with the daily prices dictating the final cost, or order a combination boil where you select one premium item — whole lobster ($40.99 during our visit), whole Dungeness crab ($44.95) or king crab legs ($49.95) — and add an additional pound of seafood, choosing one or two additional items from a lineup that includes snow crab legs, headless or head-on shrimp, clams, mussels, blue crab and crawfish (the latter two are seasonal; crawfish were unavailable on our visit).

1. Thanks for the GobblerCountry link, sutomcat! If the Hokies handle GT the way I think they can this weekend, I'll be ready to proclaim that Virginia Tech is BACK!

2. Just a clarification on the "ACC vs SEC" link for ACCFootballRx: your quote here ends with "the SEC beats out the ACC in every category." - but if your readers have ever read anything on the ACCFootballRx blog, they'll know it wouldn't be posted there if it was all gloom-and-doom. You KNOW there must be an angle, a chink in that SEC armor, something... and there IS!!!
