Welcome to Punch the Clock Day!

Today celebrates the punch clock, which is also known as a time clock, time recorder, or clock card machine. Mechanical time clocks often use heavy paper cards called time cards, that are put into a time slot and "punched" by a worker before they start work. The first time clock is seen as being invented by Willard Le Grand Bundy, a jeweler, from Auburn, New York. He invented it in 1888, and filed a patent in 1890. The patent suggests time recorders probably already existed, but that he just improved on them. His brother, Harlow Bundy, started the Bundy Manufacturing Company and began mass-producing them shortly thereafter. In the late twentieth century there was a move away from mechanical time clocks, to more computer-based ones. There are now time clocks that use the technology of smartphones and tablets.
How to Observe

Celebrate the day by punching the clock at work—not literally—but to record your work time. If you are a boss you should have lots of treats in the break room or by the punch clock, so that everyone can relax for a moment and celebrate the clock. If you don't have to go to work today, celebrate the fact that you are not punching a clock.

Syracuse football lands 2020 QB Jacobian Morgan (PS; Bailey)

Class of 2020 quarterback Jacobian Morgan has committed to Dino Babers and Syracuse football.

A 6-foot-4 pro-style QB, Morgan plays for Canton High School in Canton, MS. He announced his commitment to the Orange on Sunday night.

— Jacobian Morgan ‘20 (@jacobian_morgan) January 27, 2020
Morgan told The Post-Standard that picking the Orange was “kinda a no-brainer” and that Syracuse “felt like home.”

Morgan is currently unranked by 247 Sports, but his head coach Calvin Bolton says the Orange found a special player.

“Jacobian is a born leader,” Bolton said. “Outstanding QB with a strong arm. He’s very knowledgeable at this position. Syracuse found a diamond in the rough.”

Morgan fills a critical need as the only QB for the Orange in the 2020 cycle. Syracuse had previously missed out on several quarterbacks, like Tyler Van Dyke and transfer Cade Fortin, and lack depth on the roster after the graduation of backup QB Clayton Welch.

Syracuse also recently offered 2020 QB Dillon Markiewicz from Texas’ McKinney North High School.

Syracuse Football: Alton Robinson salvages week with dominant Senior Bowl (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football star Alton Robinson salvaged a so-so week with a dominant Senior Bowl performance. Here are all the details.

This week Alton Robinson got the opportunity to lace up his Syracuse football pads one final time at the Senior Bowl.

According to scouts, Robinson had an extremely uneven week during practice. In those opportunities Alton got smacked around by some of the best seniors in all of college football.

On Saturday he salvaged a golden opportunity with a dominant performance in the Senior Bowl.

Early in the second quarter of the Senior Bowl, Alton Robinson was lined up over the left tackle for the first time in this game and showed a beautiful inside swim move and brought down Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts for his first sack of the game.

Robinson followed that up a quarter later in the third with an impressive burst off the line of scrimmage throwing the Oregon offensive tackle like a rag doll as he secured his second sack of the day.

On top of his splash plays that’ll show up in the box score, he also had a ton of good reps overall.

Alton Robinson gets his 2nd sack of the @seniorbowl. Great explosiveness off the line & then he finishes the job. #Orange #SeniorBowl
— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) January 25, 2020
Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia and former Syracuse football graduate assistant lined Alton up all over the defensive formation: outside on the right tackle, outside on the left tackle, and even a few times inside as well.

Robinson would’ve added at least one more sack to his total, but he was held on the play.

Ultimately this wasn’t a perfect Senior Bowl week for Alton, but he accomplished what he wanted to. He cleared his name among NFL teams by explaining his side of the story in his own words (full details here).

In addition, Robinson raised his NFL draft stock with a superstar performance on gameday in the Senior Bowl. Heading into Senior Bowl week, Robinson was considered a mid to late day two pick (second to third-rounder) after this game he likely locked that in.

Weekend Links - 1/26/20

In college football news...

One ACC player shined brighter than the rest in this weekend's Reese's Senior Bowl...

Syracuse edge rusher Alton Robinson
Robinson was one of three players with at least 1.5 sacks Saturday. He was strong around the edge in addition to giving the offensive guards some work. His dominance was a bit unexpected considering he had a total of 4.5 sacks this season. The Texas native is best suited as a 4-3 defensive end.

2020 Schedule Q+A

note: this is a transcript from the official ACC website. To jump directly to my "key takeaways", click here.

Behind The Scenes Q&A: The 2020 Football Schedule
The 2020 ACC Football schedule, which was released Wednesday, Jan. 22, includes 56 regular-season league matchups (eight per team) and 56 non-conference games. As is the case every season, each ACC team plays six division games, one permanent crossover opponent and one rotating opponent from the opposite division. This season, the Atlantic Division plays host to the Coastal Division in the rotating crossover games.

In this exclusive Q&A, Senior Associate Commissioner of Football Michael Strickland discusses the complexities of building the league’s slate.

Q. Last year there were two open dates due to the way the calendar fell, and this year there is only one. What differences are there when dealing with a traditional 13-week schedule rather than one where there are multiple open dates?
A: One open date rather than two makes it much simpler to build the schedule due to our conference scheduling parameters. One of our parameters ensures that no conference team plays more than one conference opponent with an unequal open date placement prior to that matchup.
Since there are only 14 open dates, as opposed to 28, that presented fewer obstacles to navigate while building the schedule. Consequently, we were better able to accommodate schools’ requests, which is important to our schools and always our goal. Last year, the 28 open dates greatly impacted our ability to accommodate requests which resulted in fewer school requests being fulfilled. This year, we were able to meet 22 of 26 school requests (85 percent), which is the best we’ve ever done.

__________
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
1. The ACC is committed to playing a minimum of 40 football games on the ACC Network each year, which averages to just over 3 games per week in a 13-week season.

2. The #1 most common request from the schools is to avoid playing a home game during fall break. Avoiding a home game due to venue conflicts is second.

3. The ACC is obligated to play a minimum of 4 games every Saturday.

4. The breakdown of non-Saturday obligations is: 5 Thursdays and 5 Fridays, plus Labor Day Monday. The way it's worded makes it sound like that's for ESPN only, and that the ACCN requires even more - but that's not clear from either the schedule as release (5 Thu, 8 Fri) or last season's tv schedule (4 ESPN Fri + 3 Thu games, but only 3 non-Saturday games total on ACCN) if that's really separate or combined with ACCN. (In 2018, before the ACC Network, there were 5 Friday and 4 Thursday night games on ESPN+ABC).

5. It's confirmed: the reason the ACC waits to release its football schedule is to try to maximize television exposure

Football, basketball worlds collide with Brey's post-game frustration (ndinsider.com; Noie)

It was the shortest post-game press conference for Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey during his 20 seasons on the Irish sideline.

And it wasn’t even close.

It was the strangest post-game press conference for Brey.

Also, not even close.

Brey settled into a seat in a Donald L. Tucker Center conference room in Tallahassee, Fla., late Saturday night, where he figured to follow the typical protocol of making an opening statement before answering questions following his team’s 85-84 loss to No. 5 Florida State.

Noticeably frustrated by another near-miss in league play — Notre Dame (11-7; 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost its two league games last week by a combined three points and its last three by six — Brey never made it beyond the opening statement, which lasted 64 seconds.

Twenty-one seconds in, after mentioning his team and the other team, he veered in a direction he’s never gone — at least publicly — during his time at Notre Dame.

“Sometimes we’re treated by the officials like we haven’t brought football as a full member, but yet we get a full share of the ACC Network TV (revenue),” Brey said. “Are you kidding me?”

A text message to Brey early Sunday afternoon asking him to expand on/clarify his feelings about football and Notre Dame in the ACC was not returned. Brey is scheduled to speak Monday afternoon on the ACC head coaches’ teleconference.

An email early Sunday evening from ACC assistant commissioner for communications Andy Fledderjohn said he had not received any information regarding a possible reprimand of Brey by the league for his comments.

No Tribune reporter was at Saturday’s game in Tallahassee.

During his press conference, Brey was bothered by three specific situations — a layup by Juwan Durham in the closing seconds where it looked like he was fouled and should have shot a free throw to possibly tie the game, a turnover by Rex Pflueger where it looked like he didn’t travel and a technical foul call on the Irish bench after the Pflueger walk.

“I’m frustrated man,” Brey said late Saturday in his presser. “Come on, man.”

Do you see your family name on this 1852 Onondaga County map? (PS; Lohmann)

Researcher James Farrell’s hobby is to restore old maps, and he gave the treatment to an 1852 map of Onondaga County.

Farrell, a postdoc at Syracuse University studying earth sciences, said the 1852 map is likely the first map ever published of Onondaga County. It shows the locations and names of homesteads and businesses of that era.

The original map was created by E.H. Babcock & Co., of Providence, R.I., in 1852. Farrell restored the map from a version digitized in the Library of Congress.

To restore the map, Farrell knit the original map, which was printed into four pieces, together to make a single image. Then he tweaked the color, removed blemishes and made a “series of aesthetic liberties” to make the map ready for high-quality printing, Farrell said.

Farrell posted his restored map on Reddit earlier this month, where users found old family names and hints into why some roads or neighborhoods are named what they are today.

Some familiar names on the map include Alvord, Colvin, Tallman, Kinne, Fowler and Knapp.

Another early company that help form IBM was Dey Time Register Company of Syracuse. It was founded by the Dey Brothers, who would also found a dry goods store, which evolved into Dey Brothers, a department store chain based in Syracuse...
