Welcome to National Tourism Day!

Mark Twain once wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Tourism gives people new experiences, enriches their lives in countless ways, helps businesses, and bolsters the economy. National Tourism Day takes place during National Travel and Tourism Week, which occurs during the first full week of May. Congress passed a resolution in 1983, a proclamation was signed by Ronald Reagan the following year, and the week was first celebrated that May. At the time it took place later in the month. During the week, travel and tourism professionals come together to celebrate the benefits of tourism. On National Tourism Day, some tourist sites and municipalities promote their location, and sometimes they hold special events. Those who enjoy travel and tourism may find an event to attend, do some traveling and touring, or plan a place to travel to on the day.

Kendall Long commitment gives Syracuse Football needed WR depth (itlh; Mlodinski)

WR Kendall Long announced his commitment to the Orange on May 5. An important pickup, Long gives Syracuse Football a big time target.

Syracuse Football has been making moves. On May 5, they added two new recruits in WR Kendall Long and TE Derek McDonald, just one day after landing WDE Hayden Nelson. The three pickups showcase an early start on the class of 2021 recruiting trail, as the Orange currently sit in the top 60 of all FBS schools, according to 247sports’ composite rankings.

While that ranking really doesn’t mean much, it does show the Orange’s ability to stay competitive with ACC foes, as the Orange currently rank just one spot behind Louisville, while ahead of Georgia Tech, NC State, and Wake Forest.

Louisville Cardinals — 2020 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its 2020 conference schedule on October 3 against Louisville.

Scott Satterfield exceeded expectations in his first year at Louisville.

After the team went a dreadful 2-10 in 2018, leading to the dismissal of Bobby Petrino, Satterfield took over after going 51-24 at Appalachian State. In his first season, he led the Cardinals to a surprising 8-5 record and second place in the Atlantic Division behind perennial power Clemson.

The Cardinals also ended the season with plenty of momentum, winning three of their last four, culminating in a 38-28 win over Mississippi State in the Music City Bowl. The goals have now shifted for Satterfield in his second season, and getting Louisville back in the top 25 seems within reach.

Here are five storylines for Louisville heading into the 2020 season:

1. CAN THE OFFENSE TAKE ANOTHER STEP FORWARD?

Offensively, the Cardinals return several key positions players, with quarterback Micale Cunningham, running back Javian Hawkins and receiver Tutu Atwell. The trio is as good an offensive group as you’ll find in the ACC, and they’ll look to build on an offense that averaged 33.1 points per game in 2019.

The development of Cunningham will be critical to Louisville’s rise in the Atlantic. If he can build on a season where he threw for 2,065 yards and 22 touchdowns (against only five interceptions), Louisville could be in for a special year.

Don Shula helped John Carroll beat Syracuse on lakefront 70 years ago (morningjournal.com; Podolski)

It could be argued the biggest win in the history of John Carroll football occurred Nov. 12, 2016, when the visiting Blue Streaks stunned No. 1-ranked Mount Union, 31-28.

The win ended the Purple Raiders’ 112-game regular-season winning streak, gave JCU the outright Ohio Athletic Conference championship, and propelled it into the NCAA Division III playoffs, where it advanced to the national semifinal round.

The heroes that day in Alliance — among a cast of others — were quarterback Anthony Moeglin and wide receiver Willie Woods. Moeglin connected with Woods on a 24-yard touchdown throw and catch with 39 seconds left in the game to give the Blue Streaks a pulse-pounding victory over Mount.

That victory is difficult to top in the annals of JCU history, but another — 70 years ago this upcoming season — is in the mix. It’s notable on its own, but now amplified because of the passing of JCU graduate Don Shula on May 4.

Before Shula became a legend as the NFL’s winningest coach, the Harvey High School graduate had a stellar college career as a running back and on a cold November afternoon in downtown Cleveland helped the Blue Streaks to a huge victory that still resonates today.

On Nov. 10, 1950, at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, JCU rallied to defeat Syracuse in a huge upset, 21-16, as it scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The win helped put the program on the national scene.

During that era, Coach Herb Eisele’s team relied on a potent backfield of Carl Taseff and Shula. They were on display against Syracuse in front of 16,724 on a 27-degree day on the lakefront.

Taseff scored on a 1-yard run in the final minute, and then the JCU D held from its own 10 in the final seconds. That defense played big in the second half, as it pitched a shutout after the Blue Streaks trailed at halftime, 16-7.

Games that Changed the Game: Spread Offense (RX; HM)

Games that Changed the Game: Spread Offense

Throughout the history of football, certain teams and certain games have been pivotal in the evolution of the sport. For example, the 1940 NFL Championship - won by the Chicago Bears 73-0 over the Washington Redskins - marked the end of the single wing offense and the beginning of the modern quarterback. When the Miami Hurricanes beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 1983 Orange Bowl, it ushered in an age of "pro style" offenses in college football. However, no trend has completely reshaped the sport like the advent of the spread offense and its derivatives...

From ESPN's "The 25 most important games in college football's spread revolution"
As Bill Connelly of ESPN points out in the linked article, when LSU used the spread offense to win a national championship, that settled the question of pro offense vs. spread offense - the spread has won, hands down. Connelly then lists what he considers "the 25 most important and definitive games" in the history of "the spread revolution".

To be honest, the OP author blurs the distinction between "Spread offense", "West Coast offense" and "Air Raid offense". These are really difference schemes, although they share certain elements (and, in fact, there are multiple flavors of the Spread, too).

I'm not going to list all of his picks here - if you want that, click the link above - but I am going to discuss a few highlights, as well as add a more ACC-centric spin where applicable.

ACC, Pac-12, Big 12 football schools eye return to campus - The Boston Globe (bostonglobe.com; Staff)

Eight of the 14 football-playing members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, a handful of the Pac-12 schools, and all 10 of the Big 12’s schools are making plans for reopening campuses this fall.

Football stands out in particular, both with its preseason camps scheduled for August and its status as a revenue producer when it comes to conference TV deals. The ACC’s first football games are scheduled for Sept. 3, with Clemson visiting Georgia Tech and North Carolina State visiting Louisville.

So far, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia and Virginia Tech have all publicly stated the goal of having campuses open for fall classes, assuming that health officials advise it is safe to do so.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONFERENCES MULLING START OF SEASON (wccsradio.com)

Several major conferences have announced the number of their schools that expect to open their campuses in the fall, which could open the door for the start of the college football season.

In the ACC, eight of the 14 schools plan to open and five of the 12 in the Pac-12 believe they’ll open. Pitt is not one of them. Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said last week that the school would likely share plans with students and their families by early July.

So far, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia and Virginia Tech have all publicly stated the goal of having campuses open for fall classes. Pitt, Duke, Syracuse and Wake Forest are considering their options, while Boston College and Florida State haven’t specifically addressed the topic publicly.

In the Big 12, all 10 schools expect their campuses to be open, while all but Vanderbilt in the SEC will open this fall. In the Big Ten, however, none of the 14 schools will say for certain if they’ll have students back this fall.

ACC Football: Which Team is the Favorite to Win the Coastal Division for 2020? (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

The ACC Coastal is one of college football’s toughest and most unpredictable divisions on a yearly basis. With Virginia winning the 2019 division title, all seven teams have made an appearance in the conference championship game over the last seven years. The 2020 race is shaping up to be unpredictable once again. The Cavaliers must replace star quarterback Bryce Perkins but return one of the ACC’s top defenses. North Carolina and Virginia Tech are on the rise, and the arrival of a handful of transfers, including quarterback D’Eriq King, should help Miami improve in coach Manny Diaz’s second year. Pitt is also a contender behind a strong defense and senior quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Beyond Pizze Frittes: This week it's a drive-thru NY State Fair Food Fest (PS; Cazentre)

What goes with a bag of fried dough? How about an Italian sausage sandwich and a wine slushie?

If that sounds a lot like the New York State Fair, that’s the point.

For the past two weekends, a drive-thru stand offering the perennial State Fair food favorite Pizze Fritte drew mammoth crowds, first to Erie Boulevard and Bridge Street in DeWitt and then to the Orange parking lot near the fairgrounds.

Imagine what the scene will look like this weekend, when the Big Kahuna food stand and the Ashley Lynn Winery are added to the mix.

It’s an offseason State Fair Food Fest, brought to you by three popular fair vendors. The three vendors will set up from noon to 8 p.m. this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, again in the Orange lot across from the fairgrounds.
