Welcome to Garlic Lovers Day!

Garlic Lovers Day is dedicated to lovers of garlic. Garlic is an onionlike plant that is highly aromatic and has a distinct flavor. It is native to Central Asia and Northeastern Iran, and has long been used as a seasoning and for medicine in Asia, Africa, and in Europe around the Mediterranean Sea. It was used in ancient China, Rome, and Greece, and in the Americas wild garlic was eaten before Europeans arrived. In the United States it was only popular near the Gulf of Mexico and in ethnic neighborhoods in large cities, until the mid-20th century, when its popularity spread.

Garlic is used on breads, and infused in oils that season vegetables, meats, and pastas. It is also used in making things such as bruschetta and pesto. It was used to treat gangrene during World War I and II, and studies have been done to see how it affects cardiovascular health, cancer, and the common cold, but results have been inconclusive. Most garlic is grown overseas, and 90% of the domestic crop is grown in California. There are many types of garlic, most of which are varieties of hardneck or softneck garlic.

SU News

After breakout performance, Robert Hanna is ready to lift SU secondary (DO; Emerman)

Robert Hanna parked in his newly-appointed spot in the deep middle third of the field, watching Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims’ eyes. Hanna just waited. For his first career interception, in his first-ever start, all Hanna had to do was drop to one knee and let Sims’ overthrown pass fall into his arms.

An airborne chest bump followed with his hometown friend and defensive back Neil Nunn Jr., then a bear hug from linebacker Mikel Jones. Hours earlier, Hanna, a true freshman, was thrust into the rover position — a role coach Dino Babers has likened to baseball’s center fielder — when preseason All-American safety Andre Cisco got injured in warmups. Now Hanna was delivering.

Back home in South Florida, no one who’s seen Hanna play growing up was surprised, his high school coach Mike Manasco said. They’ve all seen this before: Hanna reads the quarterback’s eyes, puts himself in the right position and comes away with the ball. They weren’t surprised when they saw him do it earlier in the game either, diving for an interception which was negated by a pass interference penalty. Even his final statline — a team-high nine tackles and a pick — felt almost routine.

“From day one, I knew he was going to be a Division I difference-maker,” Manasco said.

Coach Cutcliffe Talks About Virginia Tech, Syracuse, And What Duke Needs To Do Now (DBR; Sumner)

Duke’s struggling football team goes north this weekend to take on Syracuse. The Orange are 1-2, losses to North Carolina and Pittsburgh and a victory over Georgia Tech.

They were off last week.

Not the ‘72 Dolphins. But not a pushover, either. In fact, they’re probably looking at Duke as a pushover, especially after last year’s meeting when they came into Wallace Wade and handed Duke a 49-6 defeat. Syracuse “spanked us pretty badly” David Cutcliffe summed that game up today.

Cutcliffe said he won’t have to work very hard to remind his team of that spanking.

“They have it on their I-pads. They certainly will look at it. I think a year ago that was a unique game in itself, a real low point for our team. . . . There were things we needed to address and we did. Any football player is embarrassed by poor performance and they want to respond. They’re well aware of what occurred a year ago.”

What does Duke have to do to reverse that result?

Buckle up their chin-straps for a starter.

“The have a new defensive co-ordinator (Tony White) with a complex system. They play fast, spread the field. Syracuse is a physical, very aggressive football program. If you want to mix it up, they’re the ones you want to mix it up with. You have to step your game up . . . . when it comes to physicality and effort.”

Syracuse runs a 3-3-5 defense.

What Georgia Tech is saying about Louisville football ahead of Saturday's game (C-J; Yates)

Louisville football travels to Atlanta, Georgia Friday to face a Georgia Tech team in a similar spot as the Cardinals.

Both programs have lost two straight games after opening 2020 with a victory. The Cardinals are coming off a road loss to Pittsburgh, while the Yellow Jackets fell to Syracuse 37-20.

There's also some history between U of L coach Scott Satterfield and Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins. Both coaches spent 2010 together at Florida International as assistants. Satterfield was the offensive coordinator and Collins was the defensive coordinator under then-head coach Mario Cristobal, who's now the head coach at Oregon.

More:Quarterback Malik Cunningham will have no limitations against Georgia Tech

Here's what Collins and his coaching staff had to say before facing U of L:

Overall thoughts on Satterfield:

Collins: I've got really good history with Scott Satterfield. He's a dear friend. Throughout the course of your career there are seasons that at the end of it really stands out as being something special to you. 2010, Scott Satterfield and I went to FIU. They were coming off a poor season. It was the second worst defense in college football and Scott and I went — he was the offensive coordinator and I was the defensive coordinator and in one season went from the bottom of the Sun Belt to actually winning a championship, winning a ring as the Sun Belt conference championships, winning a bowl game (Little Caesar's Bowl) and didn't have a single slice of pizza that entire week, but we ended up getting the dub.

Comparing P5 Parity (RX; HM)

Comparing P5 Parity

Balance. Sometimes college football fans like to ridicule the very thought, making a parody of parity. On the other hand, the SEC has made a living on the notion of the conference schedule gauntlet, with slogans like "it just means more". SEC fans love to point to the number of ranked teams that league has... the thing is, when it comes to ranked teams, one conference can boast something over the last six seasons that none of the others can:

#FunFactFriday
The ACC is the only conference to have every team ranked at least once in the CFP rankings:
- 2014: FSU, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Duke
- 2015: UNC
- 2016: Virginia Tech, Pitt
- 2017: Miami, NC State
- 2018: Syracuse, UVA, BC
- 2019: Wake Forest
(1/2)
— CFB Home (@CFBHome) October 2, 2020
Other conferences are close.
- The PAC-12 just needs Oregon State and Cal
- The SEC just needs Vanderbilt
- The Big 12 just needs Kansas and Texas Tech

The Big Ten is not close. They need 5 (Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, and Illinois).

2020 Transfers Contributing at 3 ACC Schools (RX; HM)

2020 Transfers Contributing at 3 ACC Schools

Some teams, like the Clemson Tigers, sign the cream of the high school football crop year after year. However, that isn't realistic for every school. At some places, you need to add to the recruiting baseline with a few well-chosen transfer players...

2020 Impact Transfer Players at Three ACC Schools:

Let's take a look at transfer players who are making an impact at three ACC schools this year...

Boston College
Phil Jurkovec, 4* QB from Notre Dame
Chibueza Onwuka, 3* DT from Buffalo
Deon Jones, 4* S from Maryland
Aarom Boumerhi, K from Temple
Jaelen Gill, 4* RB from Ohio State

The Eagles are breaking in a new head coach this season and weren't supposed to be all that good, but thanks in large part to the contributions of these transfer players BC was a 2-point conversion away from taking UNC into overtime and maybe remaining undefeated.

Miami
Bubba Bolden, 4* S from USC
Jaelan Phillips, 5* OLB from UCLA
D'Eriq King, 3* QB from Houston
Quincy Roche, 3* WDE from Temple
Jose Borregales, 3* K from FIU
Jarrid Williams, 2* OT from Houston

D'Eriq King has obviously breathed life into what was a pretty lifeless Hurricanes offense last year, but Miami's defense is also benefitting from the additions through the transfer portal.

Virginia Tech
Khalil Herbert, 3* RB from Kansas
Raheem Blackshear, 3* RB from Rutgers

BEAT DUKE! Syracuse football has their biggest game of the year this week (itlh; Mlodzinski)

It’s officially Duke week and although it’s not basketball, a win for Syracuse football would be monumental going forward.

Syracuse football sits at 1-2 with the Duke Blue Devils coming to town this Saturday. A win for the Orange would put them at .500 on the season. This could set the trend going forward for the Orange.

After SU lost their second straight game to open to 2020 season, many Orange fans began to blame Tommy DeVito, Dino Babers, and pretty much anyone else in the public eye of ‘Cuse football. However, DeVito played exceedingly better in week three against Georgia Tech, as the Orange beat the Yellow Jackets, 37-20.

Syracuse football has golden opportunity to win versus struggling Duke (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football may not prove the betting favorite against Duke this Saturday, but the Orange can absolutely prevail.

Syracuse football moved into the victory column within its 2020 campaign on Sept. 26, notching a 37-20 conquering of Georgia Tech inside the newly renovated Carrier Dome.

Now the Orange, at 1-2 after its first bye week of the 2020 stanza, has a prime chance to level its record at .500 when the ‘Cuse hosts a winless Duke crew this coming Saturday afternoon on the Hill.

Let’s dive into how the Blue Devils (0-4) have fared to date in the fall term. This past Saturday, Duke admirably attempted a fourth-quarter comeback against Virginia Tech in Durham, N.C., however, the Hokies ultimately prevailed, 38-31.

Georgia Tech trying to clean up unforced errors (AJC; Sugiura)

A little more than five minutes into the third quarter of Georgia Tech’s Sept. 26 loss at Syracuse, the Yellow Jackets appeared to have a problem. As Orange kicker Andre Szmyt readied to attempt a 53-yard field goal, Tech cornerback Jordan Huff hurried off the field to avoid a penalty for 12 men on the field.

But then, linebacker David Curry alertly counted his teammates and realized there were only 10 Jackets on the field and signaled to the sideline. Juanyeh Thomas sprinted out onto the field just in time to take his spot behind the left side of the line.

On an afternoon when the Jackets continually tripped themselves up with unforced errors, Tech on this play wasn’t made to pay for trying to solve a problem it didn’t actually have. Szmyt, the 2018 Lou Groza Award winner as the nation’s best kicker, missed his attempt to keep the score at 23-13 in Syracuse’s favor. Perhaps the Jackets might want to keep that one in the playbook.

However, there were other mistakes that weren’t as benign in the 37-20 loss that coach Geoff Collins vowed to fix after the game. As he met virtually with media Monday for the first time since the Syracuse game, Collins revisited the topic in advance of the Jackets' Friday home game against Louisville.

Upstate NY couple re-opens classic Sherwood Hotel (PS; D'Imperio)

There has been a Sherwood Hotel in the Chenango County village of Greene since 1803.

“Yes, unfortunately the original building was destroyed by fire. So the owners built it bigger and even grander and it re-opened in 1913,” said Hunter Stevens. Stevens is the hotel’s newest owner and manager, with her fiancée Mike LaCroce.

“A few years ago it went out of business and has been empty just waiting for new owners. Mike has always been in the food business as has my mother, Jeanette, and my grandparents, Antoinette and Alex Donenko. Mike and I were looking for a new adventure, so we bought it and re-opened it in June of this year.”

The Sherwood is a classic old-style hotel from the early 20th century. It has a long sweeping porch across the front and an equally sweeping veranda on the top floor. The gracious grand lobby welcomes you to the old world, yet decidedly modern, charm of this venerable Chenango County inn.

Is Duke the anti-Syracuse?
Not sure about that but I don't think it is a good thing when Cutcliffe says before a game, "We’re going to have some match-up opportunities.”

It sounds like Duke will be highly motivated to play well, especially after that awful effort against an under manned and injury riddled VT team.

the interesting thing about the new defense is that you dont really know where the shots against us will be except on the corners. Its not easy to identify which person is covering who.. Now maybe they have seen some deep shot chances with some formations they have seen. You take our best Safety out and there will be issues, hopefully a couple weeks of practice have also cleaned up a few more things as the kids learn.

I have read some interesting things about this flavor of the 3-3-5.

It looks like you should be able to run against it...but you can’t.

Someone, maybe Rocky, said that it does a really good job protecting against deep passes. It is pretty striking how few deep balls have been completed, or even attempted against this defense. It was a constant problem last year, and most of the previous seasons as well.

OCs are focusing on short and midrange routes against us right now. I hope it continues.

A couple of Deep in throws that led to TDs is really all thats been tried. I dont expect that to continue all yr but its good while it lasts,

Man if Thompson, Carter or Hanna can find themselves as ACC FOY’s or all american freshmen...

our recruiting’s going to continue improving.
