Johnny Appleseed Day celebrates the famous apple tree planter, whose real name was John Chapman. It is celebrated on two days—March 11 and September 26. Some sources list Johnny Appleseed's death day as March 11, but some list it as March 18, 1845. Johnny Appleseed Day is either celebrated on March 11 because it is the anniversary of his death, or because it is during planting season. Johnny Appleseed's birthday is September 26, in 1774, so that is why it is also celebrated on that day.
Appleseed did not simply scatter apple seeds on the ground, but planted nurseries, left them in the care of someone else, and returned every few years to check on them. Appleseed planted and introduced apples to the "West", which were areas where few Americans lived at the time. Appleseed planted trees in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and West Virginia, as well as in Ontario. He was against grafting, and most of the apples that he planted were used to make hard apple cider, which was a safe alternative to water on the frontier.
Similar to legend, Johnny Appleseed is known to have worn ragged clothes and many times be barefoot. He also wore a tin hat—not a tin pot—which he used for cooking and eating. This has become such a big part of his legend that there even is a baseball team called the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the city he died. He was a member of the New Church, and also used his travels to do missionary work. He told stories to children and the gospel to adults, many times being given supper and a place to sleep in return. He became a legend when he still was alive, and his legend continued to grow after his death.

Falk College Hosts Inaugural Football Analytics Blitz Competition (syr.edu)
On Feb. 26, students in Falk College’s sport analytics program hosted the inaugural Football Analytics Blitz—a CASE competition for undergraduate college students from around the country. The virtual competition was led by sport analytics students Zak Koeppel ’21 and Ben Ayers ’22, who saw a void in analytical competition opportunities for students interested in football.
“The SABR Diamond Dollars baseball CASE competitions were influential to growing my professional skills, so I wanted to give an opportunity similar to that for students whose primary focus is football,” Koeppel says.
With the help of Assistant Professor Dr. Jeremy Losak and Sport Analytics Academic Advisor Francesco Riverso, the Syracuse University students partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF), the data supplier for all 32 NFL teams. Koeppel and Ayers worked with Eric Eager, PFF’s vice president of research and development, who also served as a judge for the competition. PFF provided competition teams with facet grade and play-by-play data, which the teams were required to use in their analysis. PFF gave members of the overall winning team free memberships to its services.
The competition featured 20 teams from 14 college and universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, Colorado School of Mines, Duke University, Iowa State University, Northwestern University, Syracuse University (four teams), University of Central Florida, University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame (three teams), University of Oklahoma, University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, Wake Forest University (two teams) and Yeshiva University.

Clemson football: DJ Uiagalelei will have the greatest ACC season ever in 2021 (rubbingtherock; Benedict)
for gbo
Clemson football QB, DJ Uiagalelei, is primed for the best year ever for a Tiger signal-caller.
In 2020, Clemson football fans got a glimpse of the future when DJ Uiagalelei had to start against both Boston College and Notre Dame when former quarterback Trevor Lawrence contracted COVID.While the Tigers lost a heart breaker to the Irish, Uiagalelei made history as he threw for more yards against Notre Dame (439) than any previous opponent ever had. Yes, EVER. That performance also vaulted him into the Clemson football record books as those same 439 yards are the third-most in a single game in Tigers history.
From a passing perspective, the best year ever for a Clemson perspective was 2016 when Deshaun Watson threw for 4,593 and 41 touchdowns in 15 games while also leading Clemson to their first national title since 1981.
Most would argue the best overall year from a quarterback perspective was actually 2015 when Deshaun Watson became the first player in college football history to throw for more than 4,000 yards while also rushing for more than 1,000 yards.
While Uiagalelei is capable of running and is extremely mobile, he is a pocket passer and wants to throw the ball, so you won’t see him carry the ball 200 times in a season as Watson did.

Syracuse University aiming for in-person spring 2021 commencement (DO; Alessandrini)
Syracuse University is planning for an in-person commencement in May, though it may not be in the Carrier Dome.
Holding an in-person ceremony ultimately depends on guidance from the state and the public health situation, said Vice Chancellor Mike Haynie at a press briefing Wednesday. But SU’s reopening of the Dome to fans last weekend shows its ability to safely host larger events, which sets the stage for a potential in-person commencement, he said.
SU allowed fans for a men’s lacrosse game, where attendees took two COVID-19 tests prior to entry and sat socially distanced inside.
“What we’re doing right now is setting the conditions for us to be able to have a significant number of guests into that stadium for a commencement in May,” Haynie said. “We have very publicly promised our students a commencement. The university is committed to doing right by those promises.”
