Welcome to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!

A simple combination of bread, cheese, and a little butter has become one of the greatest comfort foods ever created: the grilled cheese sandwich! Cheese and bread have been being combined since the ancient Romans, but it wasn't until the twentieth century that the grilled cheese sandwich began to take shape.

Two factors set the stage for the rise of grilled cheese: inexpensive processed cheese and sliced bread. James L. Kraft opened his first cheese plant in 1914 in Illinois. The following year he invented pasteurized cheese—cheap processed cheese that wouldn't spoil when it was being transported long distances. Shortly thereafter, in the late 1920s, sliced bread came on the market. The sandwiches made at this time often had names like "toasted cheese" and "melted cheese." Recipes had grated cheese with a binder such as salad dressing, white sauce, or mustard.

During World War II, Navy cooks made "American cheese filling sandwiches" in the kitchens of ships. From the 1920s through the 1950s, most cooked cheese and bread sandwiches were served open-faced with grated cheese. Kraft Singles were introduced in 1949, changing the way grilled cheese sandwiches were made forever. By the 1960s, a second piece of bread was added on top, and "grilled cheese" became the most commonly used name for the sandwich. They became popular in cafes, diners, and cafeterias. In school cafeterias, tomato soup began being served with the sandwiches, so that Vitamin C requirements would be met. This pair has stood the test of time. Gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches are becoming more popular in restaurants today, and consumers are exploring international varieties such as France's croque monsieur, which is a version of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich that has been around since the early twentieth century.

Monday Musings: What's Left for Syracuse Basketball & Football's Offseasons? (SI; McAllister)

...
3. AFTER WILLIE TYLER'S COMMITMENT, IS SYRACUSE FOOTBALL DONE THIS OFFSEASON?

Syracuse still has one scholarship available for this offseason. That is likely to come via the transfer portal. Generally high caliber high school recruits are not available at this point, though there are always exceptions to that rule. The point is Syracuse has one more scholarship available that could add talent and depth to the roster.

4. WHAT POSITIONS COULD SYRACUSE TARGET?

There are a few positions that Syracuse could target to add to the roster. Offensive line is never off the table if a difference maker becomes available. Specifically at guard or center. That may not be the favorite for which position will get the final spot, but it is certainly an option. Others include wide receiver, defensive back and defensive line. There is no position off the table, theoretically. The position I think would be best served is defensive line. Adding another experienced player, especially at tackle, would be beneficial.

Chris Bleich Will Have Significant Impact on Syracuse Offensive Line (SI; McAllister)

The struggles of Syracuse's offensive line over the last two seasons have been well documented. The offensive line failed to consistently generate holes in the running game, gave up almost instant pressure on passing plays and that severely hampered the effectiveness of the offense as well as play calling from the staff.

With the commitment of Texas transfer Willie Tyler, Airon Servais announcing his return, a junior college prospect coming in and five incoming true freshmen as well, there is a forgotten man that should play a critical role in the offensive line next season. Chris Bleich.

Bleich was a highly coveted recruit out of high school with offers from Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Central Florida, Virginia Tech and UCLA among others. He signed with Florida, redshirted for one season and then started eight of nine games as a redshirt freshman. A player who had offers from the SEC, Big-10, Pac-12 and ACC, who started for a really good SEC program as a freshman. Those types do not grow on trees.

Yet Syracuse has that guy on its roster. While he should have been eligible last season (but that failure by the NCAA will not be discussed here), he is now ready to contribute. He is expected to earn one of the starting guard spots and help solidify the interior of the offensive line. The interior was so hit by the injury bug that fullback/h-back Chris Elmore had to move to guard. While he was better than most expected there, his move underscored the need.

Dave Doeren, NC State agree on contract extension; Doeren will sign through 2025 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Dave Doeren has been at NC State since Dec. 2012. As it appears, Doeren won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. According to multiple media reports, Doeren and NC State have agreed to a new contract. The new deal tacks on a two-year extension — through the 2025 season. Doeren will also receive a salary increase, starting with the 2021 season.

The deal still needs approval from the Board of Trustees.

Sources: NC State and Coach Dave Doeren gave agreed to a new contract that includes a two-year extension. The deal will take him through 2025 and bump his salary to $3.5 million from $3.25 million starting this season. Still needs BOT approval, which is expected this week.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) April 11, 2021

NC State will also raise the salaries for nine returning assistant coach, including offensive coordinator Tim Beck.

The first to report the news was R. Cory Smith of Pack Pride. In the past, Doeren and NC State have agreed on multiple previous extensions, including in 2017 and 2019.

ACC FB fan unhappy with ACCN choices

I saw these comments by user "YouPeople" on CSNBBS about yesterday's coverage of the NC State and Florida State Spring football games...

Here is an example of what Jim Phillips is talking about...and it needs to change.
NCSU and FSU [had] their spring games on the ACCN[Saturday].
NCSU starts at 1pm but doesn't air on time thanks to Cuse vs UVa women's lacrosse. Instead of moving the lacrosse game to ACCNX, they instead move football there. To make matters worse, those that go to ACCNX can't find the game BECAUSE IT ISN'T LISTED. This is an idiotic decision on behalf of the ACCN.
Oh but it gets better. At 3pm, the ACCN announces it will move the spring game back to ACCNX in order to air UNC vs Notre Dame women's lacrosse... that just so happened to be in a rain delay!
So they couldn't move the UVa/Cuse game to ACCNX... but they could move the football... TWICE.

Florida State and Georgia Tech always have tough schedules, and 2021 is no different. Why is that? It's because of their annual opponents. Every year the Seminoles and Jackets both place the Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes. Florida State also plays the Florida Gators, while Georgia Tech plays the Georgia Bulldogs every season. Now, add to that the fact that both programs also must face Notre Dame, UNC, and an improving Boston College in 2021, and you've got a solid 6-game core schedule.

Links, news and rumors - 2021 April 12th

From CBS Sports: Ranking the top 10 college football coaches under age 45 entering the 2021 season

8. Mike Norvell (39), Florida State

3-6 (.333) in one season: There were some tangible advances in Norvell's first season at FSU. The offensive line solidified. There is depth at quarterback now with the addition of McKenzie Milton. It's going to be a heavy lift. The Noles were 3-6 in Norvell's first season. Clemson isn't going anywhere in the ACC. But Norvell was hired because of what he did at Memphis, winning 38 games in four seasons and taking the Tigers to the Cotton Bowl. 2020 ranking: 9

Also from CBS Sports: Players ready to emerge as breakout superstars in the 2021 season

UNC

David Cobb: North Carolina WR Khafre Brown

With star junior quarterback Sam Howell back behind a veteran offensive line, you can bet the Tar Heels will want to sling the football around this season. The only problem is that the top-four pass catchers from last season's prolific offense have departed. That leaves a massive void, and Khafre Brown looks capable of helping to fill it.
Brown made 15 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns last season as a freshman while playing behind his draft-bound older brother, Dyami Brown, and fellow standout Dazz Newsome. That duo combined for 109 receptions last season, and there will be a great opportunity for Khafre to catch 60 or more passes in 2021 as he helps replace their production. The former four-star prospect has been missing from spring practice due to a lower body injury, but provided that he is healthy for preseason practice, he's ready to be a breakout star in the ACC this season.

FSU football: Former players impressed at 2021 spring game (chopchat.com; Hunt)FSU football spring came will conclude with a final practice Sunday after hosting its annual spring game Saturday.
The game saw over 100 recruits and a few thousand fans in attendance who braved the threat of nasty weather to watch an improved product on the field. How smart is it to hold one final practice Sunday knowing most or all of those recruits are still in town?
The game featured explosive offensive plays involving some young players, organization on both sides of the ball, physicality, fewer penalties, and impact plays made by the defense. There was an excitement in the air after the spring game and I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt it. There were a host of former players at the game. Peter Warrick, Snoop Minnis, Chris Weike, Vince Williams, Karlos Williams Sr., and others were there.
Here are a couple of statements I found on social media from former players giving their thoughts on the game.

I’m happy with what I saw today at the FSU spring game. It’s obvious that @Coach_Norvell is building something special.
— Vince Williams (@VinnyVidiVici98) April 11, 2021

They looked good. Young players really taking advantage of the playing time. Still things to clean up but @Coach_Norvell knows what he is doings and the players are buying in and playing to a new standard.
— Karlos Williams Sr. (@karlos_sr) April 11, 2021

Peter Warrick gave some insight during the game when he was interviewed on the ACC Network. I thought the folks on the ACC Network saw many positives from the game, and felt like progress has been made compared to the product we’ve seen on the field.

Why some Syracuse-area residents will see more planes flying over their homes this summer (PS: $; Moriarty)

Reconstruction of the main runway at Syracuse Hancock International Airport will mean more planes flying low over homes southeast and northwest of the airport this summer.

The work on runway 10-28 is scheduled to start Wednesday, April 28, 2021 and last through Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021.

The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority said the work will “enhance the safety and reliability of the asphalt, thus improving the life of the existing runway.”

“Additionally, new lighting and signage will be installed to further enhance safety upgrades to the runway,” the authority said.

The work will have no impact on flight capacity at the airport. But the airport’s secondary runway (15-33) will be used exclusively during the project. And that means people who live southeast and northwest of the airport will notice more planes than usual flying over their homes.
