Welcome to National Bundt Day!

The simple and elegant Bundt cakes were developed when the company Nordic Ware decided to introduce a new type of cake pan based on a type of European cake.

Rose Joshua and Fanni Schanfield, members of the Hadassah Society, approached the founders of Nordic Ware H. Davey Dalquist and Mark S. Dalquist. They were hoping that Nordic Ware could produce a pan for the traditional Gugelhupf cake. The founders agreed and produced a small run of these brand new ‘Bundt’ pans with the ‘t’ added for marketing.

The first run sold very poorly and the company considered discontinuing the range. Eventually, it was mentioned in ‘The New Good Housekeeping’ and started picking up in popularity.

The Bundt pan shot to popularity after Ella Helfrich won the Pillsbury bake-off with her ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ baked in a Bundt pan. When Ella won the bake-off, Pillsbury ended up with more than 200,000 requests for Bundt pans. Eventually, the pans surpassed the Jello-O molds to become the most sold molds in the country.

National Bundt Day was designated to celebrate 60 years of the popularity of Bundt pans. Pillsbury even licensed the name so they could sell special Bundt pancake mixes.

The Morning After: Louisville upends Syracuse 41-3 (thenewshouse.com; Zulkofske)

Syracuse football played its worst game of the season at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday. Garrett Shrader only completed 10 passes for 46 yards and Sean Tucker was limited to under 100 yards rushing for just the second time this fall.

Maybe the worst part? Lamar Jackson, who famously hurdled an Orange defender at the Dome during his 2016 Heisman season, saw the whole thing. The Cardinals retired Jackson’s No. 8 before the game.

The Orange failed to reach the endzone for the first time this season and allowed 40 or more points in regulation for the first time as well. Still one win away from bowl eligibility, if Syracuse plays anything as it did on Saturday, they will not make the postseason.

“I think Louisville played a fantastic game and I thought they had a good game plan,” head coach Dino Babers said. “They were motivated, they were stimulated and they came out and played well.”

The bye week hurt the team:

The team was confident about coming off a week of needed rest and Louisville’s last game being a tough loss against Clemson. Syracuse lost to the Tigers, too, and played them closer than they played the Cardinals on Saturday.

Babers said after the 41-3 loss that Louisville ran the scoreboard and put the game out of reach early, which was “extremely disappointing.” The Cardinals outscored Syracuse 35-3 in the first half. Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham scored all five of his touchdowns in the first two quarters.

The offense needs to be competitive:

Saturday was the first game in 2021 where Syracuse’s offense could not keep up with its competition: a list that includes offenses quarterbacked by Malik Willis, Sam Hartman and DJ Uiagalelei. They couldn’t keep up with Cunningham and U of L running back Jalen Mitchell, who rushed for 103 yards.

The Orange offense mustered just 184 yards of offense. Tucker was held to 95 yards and Shrader had the lowest output of his career as a starter with SU. Only five players moved the ball for positive yardage compared to Louisville’s 10.

Syracuse must score points against NC State and Pittsburgh over the next two weeks. Both teams’ offenses average 32 and 44 points respectively, well over Syracuse’s average of 27 points per contest.

No more mistakes, at all, from here on out:

Syracuse’s season has been defined by losing games they could’ve won, but they made mistakes that put them out of contention early against Louisville.

Mikel Jones, SU’s defensive captain as voted by the players, committed a targeting penalty and was ejected in the second quarter. Jones bagged two tackles and a sack on Cunningham before being disqualified from the game.

“Mikel Jones is the quarterback of our defense,” Babers said. “Losing Mikel Jones in a football game is like us losing Garrett Shrader. Regardless of that, you train people to be backups and you find a way to not only improvise but find a way to give guys a chance when you lose a captain. We need to do a better job of that.”

If Syracuse’s goal is to make the postseason, they need to find ways to expose the Wolfpack and the Panthers. Every winning scenario involves Jones and SU’s other key players on the field, contributing to those potential wins.

N.C. State came into Saturday’s contest against Wake Forest with one of the best defenses in the ACC. The Demon Deacons, the best offense in the league, torched them.

The Wolfpack couldn’t slow down Wake Forest, couldn’t get off the field and ultimately couldn’t overcome the loss of one defender after another. The result was a 45-42 win by the Demon Deacons.

With the win, Wake Forest (9-1, 6-0) remained in the driver’s seat for the Atlantic Division crown. If N.C. State (7-3, 4-2) hopes to somehow get into the title game they will need some help.

The Wolfpack can’t afford many more slip ups. When Wake Forest needed a big drive, they got it. Ahead by three after a Devin Leary to Emeka Emezie score, the Demon Deacons went on a 75-yard, 13 play drive that took 6:20 off the clock. Wake Forest was 3-3 on the drive on third down, getting a pass interference call on Chris Ingram to help out on one of those.

The Demon Deacons got what they wanted on offense most of the night anyway. Coming into the game, Wake Forest was the only team in college football to score at least 35 points each game. They scored 24 in the first half, the most N.C. State has given up in a half all season.

The Wolfpack defense, which only gave up two rushing touchdowns before Saturday, surrendered three on the ground versus Wake Forest.

N.C. State’s offense played well at times, but couldn’t keep up with the Demon Deacons, who scored on two straight drives in the final quarter. Don’t let the high score fool you, there was some defense played. There were six total turnovers, including a season-high three interceptions by the Wolfpack. N.C. State was undefeated this season when they forced at least one turnover, but couldn’t take advantage every time Wake Forest gifted them the ball.

Despite another 400-yard day from Leary, N.C. State didn’t score an offensive touchdown in the third quarter. Leary’s fourth touchdown made it a three-point game with 45 seconds remaining, but Ricky Person was called for illegal touching on the onside kick attempt, all but sealing the win.

The Wolfpack defense came into the game having only surrendered two rushing touchdowns, but the Demon Deacons got two on the ground in the first half. The second came after Wake Forest took advantage of N.C. State’s second turnover of the half. Traveon Reed returned a Devin Carter fumble 47-yards to the 5-yard line.

On the next play Hartman took it in himself, putting the Demon Deacons up 20-6.

N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren took longer than usual to get to the podium for his postgame press conference.

Some of his players hung around on the field, watching the Wake Forest players and fans celebrate after their 45-42 home win. It was the final home game at Truist Field for the Demon Deacons, and they went out in style.

Two more wins and Wake Forest is going to Charlotte to play for the ACC championship. N.C. State no longer controls its own destiny and will need to win out and get help from Clemson and Boston College in the final two weeks.

The Wolfpack (7-3, 4-2), winners of two in a row before Saturday, doesn’t have room for much error and needed to play almost perfect to knock off a disciplined Wake Forest team. N.C. State was out of character, committing a season-high 14 penalties and three turnovers.

They also couldn’t get off the field on third down (10-19 by Wake Forest) or convert on third down (3-14). The things they’ve done well in wins this season were MIA in the biggest game of the Doeren era.

As positively as it can be said, it wasn’t supposed to end this way for Syracuse football. By that, we mean the team that was picked to go winless in the ACC and finish with around three wins has exceeded all expectations. The Orange are now 5-5 and better than anyone thought they would be, but the season is still headed for a disappointing finish. For SU fans, it’s time for another mid-November attention shift to basketball season. Syracuse hoops vs. Drexel this evening, anyone?

Firstly, yesterday’s 41-3 whitewashing at the hands of Louisville showed us all just how far Syracuse is from truly competing with explosive, well-rounded teams. It’s another scar on Dino Babers’ growing record of blowout losses and yet another time the Cardinals have taken the Orange to the woodshed. Since 2014, Louisville is 7-1 against SU and has outscored Syracuse 337-152. All seven of those SU losses against the Cards have been by at least 22 points.

It’s also becoming increasingly apparent that quarterback Garrett Shrader has limitations. Outside of a great game against an uncharacteristically poor Virginia Tech defense, Shrader hasn’t been electrifying through the air. It’s clear Shrader is better than Tommy DeVito was, but the former has yet to complete more than 17 passes in a game and has finished with a completion percentage under 50% in four of his seven starts. In this day and age, it’s hard to win games if you can’t throw no matter how good your transcendent freshman running back is.

For most SU fans, I’d wager they were likely hoping against hope that this team could pull off a win against the Cardinals. If you check the Fizz’s game predictions, most of our writers were. Now, it’s clear that the team is a little too inconsistent for comfort and has an obvious ceiling set by its one-dimensional offense. A persistently grounded aerial attack and questionable game-to-game readiness have made for an also-ran.

‘Cuse football is now staring a 5-7 finish right in the face. A 4-5 Louisville team was regarded as Dino Babers’ last great opportunity to secure a bowl season. Now the Orange are 5-5 and looking at two straight ranked conference opponents: a road trip No. 21 NC State on November 20th, and a Dome matchup with No. 25 Pitt on November 27th. The Wolfpack have the 14th best scoring defense in the FBS, and the Panthers have cruised along to the tune of 3,517 passing yards from senior quarterback Kenny Pickett. We’ve underestimated the Orange a few times this year, but save your money if you’re a bettor. These games do not look promising.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2021...-bowl-berth-takes-huge-hit-embarrassing-loss/ (itlh; Adler)

I will always bleed Orange, and I love my Syracuse football team, but what transpired on Saturday afternoon from Cardinal Stadium was truly abysmal.

In no way, shape or form will I say that the ‘Cuse players weren’t playing hard or trying their best, because I believe that they always are.

However, to come off a bye week, with all that extra rest, and still get blown out by a solid, but not spectacular, opponent is perplexing to me.

For a Syracuse football squad that has suited up in numerous close games during the 2021 campaign, both in wins and losses, the ‘Cuse (5-5, 2-4) came out flat, and stayed flat, throughout the entirety of a 41-3 demolition at the hands of Louisville (5-5, 3-4).

Syracuse football was awful in a 38-point defeat to Louisville.

Against the Cardinals, the Orange couldn’t get anything going on offense, and the defense was absolutely shredded by Louisville’s dual-threat quarterback, Malik Cunningham.

Cunningham is really, really good, and he showed it versus Syracuse football. Wildly efficient, Cunningham only threw 18 passes, completing 13 of them, yet he tallied four passing touchdowns and no interceptions, according to a cuse.com press release and statistics on the ESPN Web site.

By comparison, the Orange’s dual-threat QB, Garrett Shrader, also didn’t throw a pick, yet he managed only 46 yards through the air, which is dreadful, and he rushed 20 times for just 43 yards.

In front of a crowd of a packed crowd, the Cardinals took the field against the Syracuse Orange on a day that was highlighted by the return of one of the city’s beloved sons, Lamar Jackson. This was a day that was meant to retire his number eight jersey in spectacular fashion. The energy was heartfelt because the Louisville Cardinals played spectacular from the opening kickoff!

Louisville’s offense shines to end it early

Louisville pummeled Syracuse 41-3 in front of the former Heisman Trophy winner. Malik Cunningham was set to full throttle in the first half connecting for four touchdown passes through the air. He started the game off with a six yard scamper on the ground to put the cards up 7-0. Syracuse drove down on it’s second drive and kicked a field goal for what ended up as their only score of the day.

Cunningham went bombs away for the rest of the way spreading the ball around the field for strikes to three different receivers. Tyler Harrell and Jordan Watkins each had a touchdown reception, while Ahmari Huggins-Bruce tacked on a pair of his own. The offense once again put together a balanced performance and was able to coast for the rest of the way.

The defense would have much more preferred a shutout, however giving a total of 3 points on the day is like a golden feather in their Kangol hat. The passing game has hurt the Louisville defense in recent weeks, but conceding only 46 yards through the air isn’t anything to sniff at.

The University of Louisville played as close to a perfect football Saturday afternoon as it has in a long, long while. Perhaps ever.

Cardinals 41. Syracuse 3.

Cliché Alert. As we wags are wont to say for ironic emphasis, the game wasn’t that close.

And, of course, I’ll get to some highlights. But, as is my tic, let’s take the long and winding road.

Besides, as a charter member of NAVCFWUS (National Association of Verbose College Football Wags of the United States), by club rules, I must start peripherally and work toward the actual subject matter.

(Oh, how easy to ease joke around, big victory in the books.)

* * * * *

There have been a number of astounding successes for the two major men’s sports at U of L that were frankly impossible to imagine decades ago for those who have been fans since mid 20th C.

Three national basketball championships.

Membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

But none quite as dumbfounding to conjure a vision of than a University of Louisville Cardinal raising the Heisman Trophy.

Lamar Jackson was honored Saturday.

Incredibly talented. Legitimately humble and grateful. Truly decent. Absolutely deserving of every accolade for his play and life here in Louisville, and in Baltimore.

But, for all of those feats he performed on the Cardinal Stadium turf, I’m not sure he ever threw TD aerials as perfect as some tossed by Malik Cunningham against the Orange.

After the 41 yarder to Jordan Watkins, I wrote in my notes, “Great Pass.” After watching a replay on the screen, I added, “Perfect Pass.”

The scoring throw to Tyler Harrell was similarly beauteous.

Joel Klatt on 12-Team CFP Expansion

How do industry experts view CFP expansion? Here's one man's opinion...

Joel Klatt on 12-Team CFP Expansion

I have long been critical of the CFB Playoff and its issues...Here is a plan to fix it moving forward...a 12 or 14 team model would be best for the sport overallpic.twitter.com/QNhLEfbAgN
— Joel Klatt (@joelklatt) November 11, 2021

Summary of Klatt's Playoff Changes

- Remove divisions from every conference (2 best teams in CCG)
- Dilute the CFP Committee Rankings (maybe add computer component)
- Diversity TV Partnership (not 100% on ESPN)
- Establish more objective criteria (not just "eye test")

What this all would mean for the ACC:

- Getting rid of divisions would vastly improve the ACC schedule, both for television ratings and for stadium attendance.
- More computers, less committee means less human bias (e.g. #SECBias)
- More TV partners means better exposure and more money; it also makes the ACC more valuable to ESPN since those games are (currently) 100% under contract to "The Mouse".
- More objective criteria (e.g. conference championship) means ACC teams can earn a playoff spot, rather than audition for one.

https://247sports.com/college/duke/...ball-virginia-tech-2021-game-recap-175231657/ (247sports.com; Rowe)

Duke Football came in to today's game against Virginia Tech on a ten game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak. With their starting quarterback, Gunnar Holmberg, out with an upper body injury, backup Riley Leonard was under center to try and turn around yet another losing season for David Cutcliffe's group.

But despite the team's best efforts, the Blue Devils went in to halftime with a 17-3 deficit to a Hokies' team that had lost four of its last five games. The offense mustered just 135 yards in the first half to Virginia Tech's 333, while Duke's defense gave up 20 points in addition to 30.3 yards per completion through the air.

After a half of football, Mataeo Durant had rushed for 28 yards, putting his season total up to 1,091 yards. Last week, he became the first running back under Cutcliffe to run for over 1,000 yards in a season and the first one since Chris Douglas' 1,138 in 2003.

It was yet another deflating performance for Duke under Cutcliffe in recent years, as the program has spiraled to depths not seen since before the long time head coach took over the program in 2008. There are two games remaining on the season, both home contests, with Louisville coming to Wallace Wade next week and then Miami in town for senior night.

In the last eleven losses, the team has lost by double digits in ten of them and have lost by 21 points or more in nine of the last eleven. During the eleven game ACC losing streak, they have suffered an average margin of defeat of 28.4 points per game (511-199).

The Blue Devils will need to find a win against one of those teams to stop a conference slide not seen in over a decade. Even if they can, it's no guarantee that it would be enough to enact a contract extension with a new Athletics Director, Nina King, taking over in September. Cutcliffe's contract is up in 2023, and it's nearly impossible for a coaching staff to recruit with a lame duck head coach heading in to the final year of a contract. King will need to either declare a statement of confidence in Cutcliffe heading in to the 2022 season and renew his contract or start the process of looking for the program's next head coach.

A wall covered with graffiti art, including Vacant's notorious eye, near downtown Syracuse in April 2021. Katrina Tulloch

https://www.syracuse.com/entertainm...racuses-notorious-graffiti-artist-photos.html (PS; $; Tulloch)

The eyes have watched over Syracuse for a decade.

You’ve seen them. The vibrant, bulbous eyeballs are painted across empty buildings, bridges, underpasses, abandoned trucks and trains in Central New York.

They’re arguably the most recognizable graffiti in Syracuse.

The eye itself is distinctively lidded, unblinking, often shaped like a balloon. Some eyes are colorful like rainbow sherbet, or patterned with dots and lines like Morse code. Sometimes the artist paints them like Cyclopean creatures with devil horns or tentacles.

Syracuse has hundreds of these eyes. The artist says there are thousands, though that’s difficult to prove. Many have been covered over time.

The artist goes by “Vacant” and they won’t go public with their identity. Making graffiti is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail.

The artist contacted a reporter on Instagram after noticing graffiti photos published on Syracuse.com. Vacant shared details about their work via Instagram messages, which have been confirmed by other interviews.

Syracuse is Vacant’s home base, but their eyes can be found in Cortland, Binghamton, Geneva, Canandaigua, and even in the Adirondacks.
