Welcome to Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Day!

For more than eight decades, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has stood as a holiday beacon for New Yorkers and visitors alike. While the lights, decorations, and stars have changed through the years, visiting the Tree remains a quintessential New York experience.

December 1931
Workers at Rockefeller Center pooled their money together to buy a Christmas tree. The men decorated the 20-foot high balsam fir with handmade garlands made by their families. This photo, taken on Christmas Eve, shows the men lined up to receive their wages.

A key starter on SU’s offensive line will return for 6th season: 'There is unfinished business' (PS; Mink)

Syracuse offensive lineman Dakota Davis will return for a sixth season in 2022, he said Tuesday night.

“I’ll be back,” Davis wrote on Twitter. “There is unfinished business.”

Davis’s return helps solidify the interior of an offensive line that will be crucial to the Orange’s success next season.

He played in the team’s final nine games after recovering from a preseason injury, mostly at right guard but also stepping in at right tackle for SU’s 21-6 victory against Boston College on Oct. 30.

Over the past five seasons, Davis appeared in 38 games, making him among the Orange’s most experienced linemen heading into next season.

Syracuse relied on several interior linemen over the course of the season, with players in and out of the lineup because of injuries and flu-like symptoms down the stretch. One of those guards, Chris Bleich, posted on Instagram earlier Monday he was “looking forward to getting my hips taken care of and having a better season.”

Matthew Bergeron

Syracuse Orange

Pros:

Ezring: The 2021 Syracuse offensive line led the way for a dynamic running game. A key member of that unit was Matthew Bergeron. The Canadian tackle is a proven, reliable starter on both the right and left sides of the line. The Orange lineman boasts sufficient short-area movement skills and loose hips to hinge. He is capable of pulling to the front side A and B gaps; similarly, he gets to the second level in the run game. He flashes the ability to perform reach blocks. He has above-average straight-line speed to get to space on screens. In pass protection, he has the change of direction ability to mirror and can meet defenders at the bottom of the outside track in his vertical sets. Moreover, Bergeron manufactures power well, using persistent leg drive to create space or close distance against longer defenders. Upon engagement, the Syracuse standout exhibits heavy hands to put opponents off balance and impact their rush timing. He sometimes displays a passable anchor when he plays with sound leverage and a wide base. What’s more, the athletic lineman has the flexibility to roll his hips through blocks. Additionally, Bergeron regularly maintains a wide base into and through engagement. In pass protection, he usually keeps active feet. Bergeron’s initial punch is often accurate. He handles stunts well.

Duce Chestnut (20) caught the third and final interception of his freshman season against Pitt on Saturday

Babers returns for 2022; Syracuse football players honored by ACC (thenewshouse.com; Green)

Babers stays on as head coach

Orange football coach Dino Babers will return in 2022, Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack announced. Wildhack also said that Babers’ contract extends past 2022.

Other staff changes were made, however. Sterlin Gilbert (offensive coordinator), Reno Ferri (tight ends coach) and Vinson Reynolds (defensive line coach) will not be part of the 2022 Syracuse football program.

Next season will be Babers’ seventh at Syracuse. The team improved from 1-10 in 2020 to 5-7 in 2021, but still fell short of making a bowl game. Syracuse’s last winning season came in 2018 when they went 10-3 and won the Camping World Bowl.

Several Orange football players receive ACC honors

Four members of the Syracuse football team earned selections to the three Atlantic Coast Conference teams, with an additional four players receiving honorable mentions.

Running back Sean Tucker made the All-ACC First-Team offense, leading all offensive players with 187 voting points. His 1,496 rushing yards led the conference and placed him fourth nationally.

Tucker also received an honorable mention nod as an all-purpose player. His 1,751 all-purpose yards ranked second in the ACC and sixth in the country. Tucker finished the regular season with 12 rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores.

The Orange had a pair of first-team defensive players, with defensive end Cody Roscoe and linebacker Mikel Jones receiving the honors.

Roscoe finished third in the ACC with 8.5 sacks. Jones was the conference’s second-leading tackler with 110 total. Jones was also picked as the ACC Linebacker of the Week following his career-high, 16-tackle performance against Pitt.

Duce Chestnut made the All-ACC Third-Team defense at cornerback. The freshman had three interceptions, which was tied for second in the ACC. Chestnut’s eight pass breakups tied for third in the conference.

Offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron, center Airon Servais, defensive tackle Josh Black and cornerback Garrett Williams garnered honorable mentions for the Orange.

Men’s cross country runs to a top-20 finish at the NCAAs

The Orange men’s cross country team finished 19th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Tallahassee, Fla.

Joe Dragon was Syracuse’s top runner and crossed the 10k finish line 55th with a time of 29:43. JP Trojan finished 78th (30:00), while Aidan Tooker placed 90th (30:06). Northern Arizona won the overall team championship for the men.

Syracuse Basketball: Blue-bloods will be tough to beat for 5-star target (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches, in mid-September, made a trip to the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., to visit with several players on the powerhouse team.

One of those players is 2023 five-star wing Taylor Bowen, who at the time of this writing was ranked in the top-25 overall, and in the top-10 at small forward, by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Orange coaches have shown interest in Bowen, according to various media reports, although the stellar 2023 prospect does have a long list of impressive suitors, including multiple blue-blood programs and other recruiting heavyweights in collegiate hoops.

Bowen, who is just starting his junior season for the Brewster Academy, recently competed in the 2021 National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.

According to college basketball insider Adam Zagoria, coaches from Kentucky, Duke, Kansas and Connecticut watched Bowen suit up at this event.

Syracuse basketball has displayed interest in five-star wing Taylor Bowen.

Per Zagoria’s article, among the college groups recruiting Bowen the hardest are Duke, UConn, Providence, Kansas and Arkansas. That’s quite a list.

Other schools that have offered Bowen, or are showing interest in him, include Dayton, Marquette, Southern California, Maryland, Penn State, LSU, Rutgers, Iowa, Vermont and George Mason.

Pitt, Wake Forest rise in College Football Playoff rankings ahead of ACC championship (post-gazette; McGonigal)

Pat Narduzzi said Sunday he didn’t believe the ACC was getting enough “respect” nationally. Perhaps Narduzzi’s point was illustrated Tuesday.

Pitt remained the highest-ranked ACC team by the College Football Playoff rankings, rising two spots to 15th. The Panthers were 15th in the AFCA Coaches Poll and 17th in the Associated Press top 25 rankings earlier in the week.

The playoff committee slotted Wake Forest, Pitt’s opponent in the ACC championship, right behind the Panthers at 16th. N.C. State and Clemson rounded out the ACC’s representation at 18th and 20th, respectively.

Notably, Pitt and Wake Forest were the lowest-ranked Power Five teams with 10-2 records. Ohio State was the highest-ranked two-loss team at seventh overall, followed by Ole Miss, Baylor, Oregon at eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. Michigan State and Iowa were 11th and 13th.

Ultimately, the rankings don’t matter for Pitt. It would be a positive for the program if it finishes the season in or around the top 10. But there’s no path for the Panthers to rise into the playoff conversation. The only thing Kenny Pickett and the Panthers are focusing on is Saturday’s ACC title game.

Pitt and Wake Forest kick off at 8 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The game is televised on ABC.

2021 ACC Bowl Projections - Championship Week (bcinterruption.com; Flannery)

Based on current results, we’re going to say Pitt will get the honor of representing the ACC as its champion. They’ll face Wake Forest in the ACC championship game this weekend.

Typically the ACC champion would automatically be sent to the Orange Bowl, but the Orange Bowl is a CFP game this year, so an ACC representative in the NY6 is not guaranteed. Still, I believe Pitt’s ACCCG win will boost them in the rankings and they will be sent to the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix to play against another at-large. The other option would be the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Next, Notre Dame is allied with the ACC for bowl bids, but can also earn an at-large spot themselves in a number of bowls. Being 11-1 at the moment and ranked #6 in the country, it is likely that Notre Dame will be selected for an NY6 bowl (or a CFP slot), and I predict they will be sent to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

The next tier of ACC bowl games is an even selection process between 8 different bowls:

  • The Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando versus Big 12 (last played by Miami)
  • The Gator Bowl in Jacksonville versus SEC (last played by NC State)
  • The Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte versus SEC (last played by Wake Forest)
  • The Sun Bowl in El Paso versus Pac-12 (canceled in 2020, last played by FSU in 2019)
  • The New Era Pinstripe Bowl in NYC versus Big Ten (canceled in 2020, last played by Wake Forest in 2019)
  • The Holiday Bowl in San Diego versus Pac-12 (new to the ACC)
  • The Fenway Bowl in Boston versus the American Athletic (brand new)
  • The Military Bowl in Annapolis versus the East Carolina (canceled in 2020, last played by UNC in 2019)
These bowls likely won’t select the same school two times in a row, and will mostly try to avoid selecting a school that has attended in the past few years.

Turning Stone casino to reopen Exit 33 nightclubs for first time in 20 months (PS; Cazentre)

Nightlife is returning to the nightclub wing of the Turning Stone Resort Casino.

Three clubs in the Exit 33 entertainment complex at the Oneida Indian Nation resort will open on Friday and Saturday nights starting Dec. 10 after being shut since the start of the Covid pandemic in March 2020, the nation announced in a news release. The casino itself reopened in June 2020.

Tin Rooster, The Gig and The Atrium Bar will host live entertainment, including performances by The Beadle Brothers, Gridley Paige, Scars N’ Stripes and Tom Nitti on the reopening weekend.

The exceptions to the openings are Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, which are Friday and Saturday this year, when the clubs will be closed.

Guests visiting Exit 33 venues will be required to provide proof of vaccination, just as they are for the Turning Stone Event Center and The Showroom at Turning Stone. Proof of vaccination includes a vaccine card, a digital photo of a card from a smartphone device, a New York State’s Excelsior Pass or other city, state or national digital health applications. Proof of vaccination is not required elsewhere in the resort.

Two other venues in the Exit 33 wing remain closed for now. Turquoise Tiger, a 1940s ‘film noir” influenced cafe will reopen early in 2022, the nation said. Turning Stone is developing a “new concept” for the LAVA dance club, with plans to reopen it as part of a future phase.
