Welcome to Christmas Card Day!

Christmas cards, and the man who is credited with coming up with the concept for a commercial Christmas card, Sir Henry Cole, are celebrated today. Because he didn't have time to write all his family and friends at Christmas time, Cole, a worker at the Public Records Office in London, commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card for him, which Horsley did while living at Orestone Manor, near Torquay, in the United Kingdom. This first card, created in 1843, had a picture of a family celebrating Christmas together while drinking, flanked by images of people giving food and clothing to the needy. Below, the phrase "A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU" was inscribed. As the cards worked well for Cole, he had a thousand of them printed, which were sold for a shilling each, making them the first mass produced Christmas cards. In 2001, one of the original cards, which was signed by Cole himself, fetched over $30,000 at auction. It is believed that about a dozen of the original cards survive today. One of them can be viewed at the National Art Library inside of the Victoria and Albert Museum, a museum where Henry Cole was the first director.

Louis Prang, who was a print shop owner near Boston, is known as the father of the American Christmas card. His original card, created in 1875, was much more simplistic than Cole's; it consisted of a flower and the words "Merry Christmas." Many of the first generation American Christmas cards consisted of pictures of animals, nature, and scenes from the winter months, and by the 1880s Christmas cards were an important part of the holiday season. This was spurred by advances in technology and the mail service, industrialization and a move away from family farms, and a desire to keep in touch with family members across the country.

Syracuse football recruiting: 3-star New Jersey DB Avery Powell taking official visit this weekend (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football will host Class of 2022 defensive back Avery Powell on an official visit this weekend, he announced Wednesday. He's a senior at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, N.J.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Powell is rated three stars and the No. 88 cornerback this cycle by the 247Sports Composite. He's being recruited to SU by safeties/nickelbacks coach Nick Monroe and received his scholarship opportunity last May.

Powell's offer sheet also includes Nebraska, where he took an official visit in June, as well as Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.

As a senior at St. Peters, Powell recorded 67 tackles, including four for loss, to go with 11 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, an interception, 1.5 sacks and a blocked field goal, per MaxPreps.com.

Powell joins Utah offensive lineman Tapuvae Amaama as high school seniors expected to be on campus this weekend.

SU currently has 10 players committed to its 2022 class, including four defensive backs in Dom Foster, Jeremiah Wilson, Quan Peterson and Cornell Perry. The pledge class also includes one Garden State product in Millville High School running back LeQuint Allen, who was recently named Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year.

Avery Powell Officially Visiting Syracuse Football (SI; McAllister)

One of the top defensive backs in New Jersey in the 2022 cycle is officially visiting Syracuse this weekend. Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep cornerback Avery Powell will visit the Orange. Powell also has offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others. He officially visited Nebraska in June.

Powell will join offensive lineman Tapuvae Amaama and commits Dom Foster, Joe Cruz and Donovan Brown on campus for official visits.

Syracuse football currently has 10 players committed to its 2022 recruiting class. The Orange is looking to add to that group before National Signing Day, which takes place on Wednesday, December 15th. The early signing period ends on Friday, December 17th. Prospects can sign at any point during that timeframe.

The Orange hosted four prospects during the previous weekend. They included transfer defensive end Jared Verse, linebacker Garrison Madden, linebacker Kalin Bailey and offensive lineman Noah McKinney.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football's retention of Dino Babers bucks trend - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: In the ever-changing landscape of college football coaching, and in a “what have you done lately” societal environment, the only consistent element is change, especially in the ACC.

Tuesday (Dec. 7) marked the sixth anniversary of Dino Babers introductory press conference, his hiring replacing Scott Shafer announced at the podium by both the late great Floyd Little, and former athletic director Mark Coyle.

The accompanying speech came with a lot of fire and brimstone, Babers insisting that the media and attendees on hand close their collective eyes and visual to these words:

“You’re in the Carrier Dome. The house is filled. The feeling is electric. The noise is deafening. You have a defense that is relentless. You have a special teams that has been well coached. You have an offense that will not huddle. And you have a game that’s faster than you’ve ever seen on turf. Open your eyes. That’s going to be a reality. That’s going to be Syracuse football.”

Forward to this past season and the program still struggled to get fans to turn out, averaging an announced 32,460 for seven home games, or a figure that could turn out to be less than the Duke basketball game crowd on February 26.

The defense was at times relentless, finishing sixth overall in the ACC. Special teams were a disaster, dead last in field goals and punting (third in kickoffs). The offense huddled plenty, remember the unit couldn’t get the right players on the field to attempt a potential winning two-point conversion attempt against Wake Forest.

Other than and the swiftness of first team all-conference selection Sean Tucker, there was not a lot of speed, especially in the passing game under Garrett Shrader and his receivers, the offense finishing 10th overall in league play.

The reality was the fifth non-bowl season in Babers six years.

In doing some research from Babers first season, we found a fascinating article that Athlon Sports wrote ranking the ACC coaches heading into the 2016 campaign. It is eye opening for how much change there has been in that five-year period, with only six league coaches still occupying that same job. Duke still needs to name a new head coach, and on Monday Miami named Oregon’s Mario Cristobal to replace Manny Diaz as its new coach after Diaz lasted just three seasons.

There’s also the huge ironic twist that the 2016 coach ranked 14 of 14, Dave Clawson, was just named the ACC coach of the year leading Wake Forest to the ACC title game, and signing a lucrative, long term contract extension. Same for the No. 9 coach Pat Narduzzi, having taken Pitt to the league championship in building the program back up in seven years.

It looks like Clemson will lose 2 more of its dynasty-builders:
  • Athletic Director Dan Radakovich has accepted the same job at "The U" of Miami.
  • It's not official yet, but it looks like Clemson OC Tony Elliott is going to be the next Head Coach of the Virginia Cavaliers, too.
Former Pitt OC Mark Whipple didn't stay unemployed very long... Nebraska has already hired him to be their OC/QB coach. Whipple turns 65 next April.

From "Comcast" on CSNBBS:

Comcast revealed where and when ACCN will be found: The sports channel, which carries Pitt athletics, will debut on Comcast Xfinity systems in the greater Pittsburgh region by Dec. 22 on expanded basic, sports + news and Latino starter levels of service as Channel 1325 in HD. The easiest way to access the channel is by speaking the channel name into the X1 voice remote. ACCN will be available in standard definition on Channel 263 in Pittsburgh and many suburbs.

2021 ACC Bowls, Ranked (CBS) (RX; HM)

2021 ACC Bowls, Ranked (CBS)

From CBS Sports article "Ranking 2021 college football bowl games, 42-1...", here are the ACC-related bowl matchups (along with some comments from yours truly):

37. Pinstripe Bowl: Maryland vs. Virginia Tech

Dec. 29, 2:15 p.m. -- It's an ACC reunion nine seasons in the making! The Hokies and Terrapins spent some time together in the ACC but have not met since a 27-24 Maryland win during the 2013 season. Of course, anybody who has ever gone to a high school reunion knows that they're sometimes a lot more fun in theory than they are in practice.
I don't have high hopes for this game. Virginia Tech fired Justin Fuente after a 6-6 season, and even though they've replaced him with Brent Pry, you can never be sure how teams under interim coaches will approach bowl games. As for Maryland, the Terps began the season 4-0 before collapsing down the stretch. This team does not lose well as its six defeats came by an average of 30.2 points.

[Maybe it'll be a defensive masterpiece? - HM]

34. Duke's Mayo Bowl: North Carolina vs. South Carolina

Dec. 30, 11:30 a.m. -- During the months leading up to the 2021 season, I watched so many of my colleagues celebrating all the free swag they got from the Duke's Mayo Bowl. I did not receive anything. I did not get a free T-shirt (the best kind of T-shirt), nor did I get a sweet miniature helmet. I got nothing. Is that impacting the Mayo Bowl's ranking? Possibly.
More seriously, I'm just not excited by this matchup. Sure, it's a classic ACC-SEC game, and there's the regional aspect to it, but North Carolina began the year ranked in the top 10 and finished 6-6. I don't know how excited the Tar Heels will be to play in this game. On the other side, South Carolina is thrilled to be in this game as nobody expected it to win six games in Shane Beamer's debut season, but the Gamecocks aren't great. They were outscored by their opponents 291-256.
All that said, there's a non-zero chance the winning coach will have a bucket of mayonnaise dumped on them in celebration. The Duke's Mayo Bowl could be a big riser in the post-bowl rankings if it happens.

[Yes, let's all pull for a mayonnaise dump! - HM]

33. Military Bowl: Boston College vs. East Carolina

Dec. 27, 2:30 p.m. -- This is a matchup of two coaches I'm high on who a lot of the country doesn't seem to know about. Jeff Hafley took over Boston College last season, coming from Ohio State, and I don't think it's a coincidence the Buckeyes defense hasn't been quite the same since. Then there's Mike Houston at East Carolina, who I'm surprised was [not] a bigger factor in the coaching searches at places like Virginia Tech. Though Virginia is open now, so I suppose there is still a chance the Pirates could have an interim coach by the time this game begins.
Anyway, this is an interesting clash of quarterbacks. Phil Jurkovec missed a lot of the season due to injury, but the Boston College offense is a lot more explosive when he's healthy. Then there's East Carolina's Holton Ahlers, who could be playing in his final game. Ahlers has thrown for 3,129 yards this season, giving him 10,228 passing yards in his ECU career to move him past former Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard. If Ahlers is somehow able to throw for 1,764 yards in this game, he'll pass Shane Carden to become the school's all-time leader in passing yards.

[Will be a de facto home game for ECU - HM]

25. Fenway Bowl: SMU vs. Virginia

Dec. 29, 11 a.m. -- I won't lie: The venue plays a prominent role in this game's ranking. I'm a sucker for football games in baseball stadiums because it makes no sense, and this one has the added value of The Green Monster looming over the field. Seriously, each team should have the option of kicking a super field goal worth 10 points over the Green Monster from the logo at midfield. Just think of the added value and strategy behind such a move.
Unfortunately, this game will feature two teams under interim coaches. Sonny Dykes left SMU for TCU, making him an unpopular figure in many parts of the Dallas Metroplex. Then there's Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, who unexpectedly stepped down from his role. And it stinks for us (and I guess the players, too) because these were two of the more enjoyable offenses to watch in the country! SMU runs the same kind of Air Raid offense you've seen a lot of, but it's good at it. Virginia runs an offense unlike many I've ever seen before, and I'm not sure what to call it, but it feels like you just chugged a liter of Mountain Dew when you watch it. There's a chance this game could get nuts, but there's just as much of a shot at it being a bust.

2021 Classroom Resource Projects

In all the excitement, I somehow missed this; better late than never!
From the official ACC release of Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021...

ACC and CFP Foundation to Fund $75,000 in Classroom Resource Projects,

Award $47,500 in Scholarships to League’s Future Educators
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In conjunction with Saturday’s 2021 Subway ACC Football Championship Game, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation have announced they are funding $75,000 in classroom resource projects in three local markets; Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home of Wake Forest University; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the University of Pittsburgh; and Charlotte, North Carolina, host city of the title game. The projects are designed to meet teachers' needs in area schools, including classroom supplies and technology upgrades.
“The ACC is a proud supporter of teachers - who are everyday heroes - for their tireless work in enhancing the lives of others through education,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “The experiences and lessons learned by student-athletes translate particularly well to careers within education and coaching. It’s an honor to work with the College Football Playoff Foundation to recognize educators through its Extra Yard for Teachers initiative.”
“Championship games are always cause for celebration on college campuses, and it’s important to extend our work as part of that celebration to the communities these institutions call home,” said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. “The Foundation is proud to go the extra yard for teachers and schools, and our hope is that these projects will have a meaningful impact on classrooms for years to come.”
In addition to the classroom resource projects, the ACC has named 15 student-athletes as recipients of the 2021 Go Teach Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway. Each will receive $2,500 on behalf of the CFP Foundation and Dr Pepper to assist in their continued pursuit of a degree or career in education. And in the coming weeks, one recipient will win the Grand Prize of an additional $10,000 in tuition support. The 15 student-athletes were chosen by campus representatives, and the Grand Prize winner will be selected by the ACC’s award committee.

Duke football’s coaching search has progressed to a final handful of candidates with the school’s goal of hiring its new head coach by the end of this week within reach.

After showing initial interest in current head coaches like East Carolina’s Mike Houston and Army’s Jeff Monken, Duke’s focus is trained on assistants, led by Clemson’s Tony Elliott and Texas A&M’s Mike Elko.

The school is looking for a new coach after parting ways with David Cutcliffe, Duke’s coach since 2008, on Nov. 28. While Elko and Elliott are among the final candidates being considered, the search process remains ongoing.

A sitting head coach, like Monken or Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, remains attractive to the school. Elliott is Clemson’s offensive coordinator while Elko coordinates Texas A&M’s defense. Both earn salaries in the $2 million range that put them among the highest paid assistant coaches in college football.

Though Duke is a private school that doesn’t release contract details, the IRS 990 form the school is required to annually file with the federal government showed Cutcliffe’s salary at $2,848,237. But with the changing landscape of college athletics finances, Duke will be certainly increasing that salary package for its next coach.

Tony Elliott nearing deal to become Virginia's next head coach - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Tony Elliott will become the next head coach of Virginia Football. Or so it seems.

Virginia, led by athletic director Carla Williams, moved quickly; less than a week ago, Bronco Mendenhall was still the team’s coach. However, this searched progressed rapidly, as Virginia worked to land one of the top coordinators and offensive minds in the country.

Per @LarryWilliamsTI, Clemson OC Tony Elliott and his family are on the plane bound for Charlottesville.
— Brad Franklin (@Cavs_Corner) December 8, 2021

Elliott, 42, played football at Clemson (2000-03); a few years after his college career ended, Elliott joined the coaching ranks. First, he was a wide receivers coach at South Carolina State (2006-07). Elliott quickly moved up to Furman, where he was the receivers coach for three seasons (2008-10).

After his time with Furman, Elliott moved to join Dabo Swinney’s staff at Clemson — just as the rocket ship was getting ready for takeoff.

During his first four seasons with the Tigers (2011-14), Elliott served as the program’s running backs coach. When Chad Morris left for SMU after the 2014 season, Elliott was promoted to co-offensive coordinator.

Elliott served as the running backs coach and co-offensive coordinator for five seasons (2015-19), which included two national titles for Clemson.

Ahead of the 2020 season, Elliott was named the team’s sole offensive coordinator, following the departure of Jeff Scott (USF). Prior to the 2021 season, Elliott received another bump: he was named an associate head coach.

Elliott was also a candidate for the Duke head job, too, following the departure of David Cutcliffe. That search remains ongoing — now without Elliott.

Initially, Virginia search seemed likely to land on Penn State assistant coach Anthony Poindexter, who played at Virginia in the 1990s and then was a part of the program as an assistant for a decade (2003-13). That, however, changed and Elliott seemingly became The Guy in Charlottesville.

Sources: #Virginia’s coaching search, which had been focused on #PennState assistant Anthony Poindexter, could be pivoting. #Clemson OC Tony Elliott and possibly others still involved here, as @ByPatForde reported. Duke has already spoken with Elliott about its job, per sources.

Tucker named an All-American by ESPN and The Athletic (localsyr.com)

Turns out, national college football writers were pleased with Sean Tucker’s performance too.

The star running back for the Orange picked up two All-American honors from ESPN and The Athletic.

Tucker was tabbed as a first teamer by the World Wide Leader and named to The Athletic’s second team.

During his sophomore season, Tucker set the program single-season rushing record with 1,496 yards. That was good enough to finish fourth nationally. He also scored 14 touchdowns and had a program-record nine 100-yard rushing games, including seven straight – also a program record.

Along with becoming a semifinalist for the Maxwell and Doak Walker Awards, Tucker is expected to earn more All-American honors when NCAA’s teams are named Thursday, December 9.

Transfer portal wish list for Syracuse football (TNIAAM; Wall)

This is the time of year where you make a list of all the gifts you hope to receive. The Syracuse Orange football program should be preparing their list of preferred players from the transfer portal. Even if Dino Babers claims he’s not going to be doing a lot of shopping in the portal, he should be re-considering.

After a 5-7 season and the departure of several key contributors the Orange need to find players who can step in and fill those roles in 2022. We can’t count on the current high school commits and there is a lot of uncertainty from the 2021 class since we haven’t seen them in action. So we’re here to make some suggestions to Dino as he hopes to make the holidays full of merriment and cheer.

Let’s start right at the top and say that a big addition to the Orange would be Virginia Cavaliers center Olesgun Oluwatimi. A Rimington Award finalist, Oluwatimi was 2nd-team All-ACC and according to Pro Football Focus the 2nd-best run blocker among centers in the nation. With the focus on the run game likely to continue no matter who gets hired as Offensive Coordinator, adding a talented and experienced center would be a great plan. Syracuse likely has only one more season with Sean Tucker so Dino should be exploring all options of maximizing that time.

An offer was already extended to three transfer offensive lineman including former Orange commit Willie Tyler who was at Louisiana-Monroe last year. The other offers were to Florida International’s Miles Frazier and Cornell graduate Hunter Nourzad.

Miami hires AD Dan Radakovich from Clemson: Canes make another splash by poaching ACC rival, per reports (cbssports.com; Jeyarajah)

Miami has hired Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich to the same position, according to multiple reports. The hire of Radakovich, 63, is the latest in a series of big swings aimed at rebuilding Miami's athletic department back to prominence.

Radakovich, who was named Sports Business Daily's Athletic Director of the Year in 2017, has served as athletic director at Clemson since 2012, which coincides with the Tigers transforming into a national football power. The athletic department has grown to unprecedented levels under Radakovich's watch as Dabo Swinney led the program to national championships in 2016 and 2018 among six straight College Football Playoff appearances from 2015-20.

Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger reports that Miami plans to make Radakovich one of the highest-paid athletic directors in the sport with a deal that could near $3 million annually. His current deal at Clemson paid him closer to $800,000 per year. The big swing is a massive indicator that university president Julio Frenk and other movers and shakers in the university are serious about investing significantly into the football program.

ACC commissioner comments on Notre Dame potentially joining league full-time (saturdaytradition.com; Hodies)

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips isn’t closing the door on having Notre Dame join the league permanently.

Phillips spoke Wednesday about the Irish, per Brandon Marcello of 247Sports, and said he liked the relationship with the Fighting Irish, whose football program competed with the rest of the ACC for the 2020 season, but seems to be leaving the ball in Notre Dame’s court with regards to permanent membership going forward.

“Notre Dame got a chance to see what the ACC was all about last year,” Phillips said. “I’ll leave it at that. I think it was a mutually beneficial relationship.”

#ACC commissioner Jim Phillips on Notre Dame and the possibility of #GoIrish joining the conference in the future: "Notre Dame got a chance to see what the ACC was all about last year. … I'll leave it at that. I think it was a mutually beneficial relationship."
— Brandon Marcello (@bmarcello) December 8, 2021

The Fighting Irish were part of the ACC for the 2020 season due to COVID-19 and went 10-0 overall before playing the Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship Game.

Notre Dame lost, 34-10 before losing in one of the CFP semifinals to Alabama, 31-14.

ND has always been an independent for football, which means the school doesn’t belong to a conference. That said, the school does play five ACC teams each year, as part of an agreement.

State to give Syracuse $10M to improve area south and west of downtown (PS; Moriarty)

The city of Syracuse will receive $10 million from the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative to help develop the area south and west of the Central Business District into an urban, walkable part of the city.

Under the terms of the grant announced Wednesday by Gov. Kathy Hochul, the city will receive up to $300,000 in planning funds from the $10 million grant to begin the process of developing a revitalization plan for the area. A local planning committee made up of municipal representatives, community leaders and other stakeholders will lead the effort, supported by a team of private sector experts and state planners.

Mayor Ben Walsh said the money will be used to invest in vacant or underutilized properties, improve building facades and storefronts, add affordable housing and enhance public infrastructure and green spaces to attract new businesses and visitors to this area.

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative began in 2016 as part of the state’s efforts to revitalization downtowns and neighborhoods in all ten regions of the state.

In the first four years of the program, the state committed $400 million to invest in downtowns that it says are ripe for revitalization and have the potential to become magnets for redevelopment, business, job creation, greater economic and housing diversity, and opportunity.
