Welcome to National Maple Syrup Day!

Maple syrup is used on breakfast foods such as pancakes, waffles, and French toast, and can be added to many dishes as a sweetener. It can even be poured on top of ice cream for dessert. Today we use a little more of it than usual, as it is National Maple Syrup Day.

Maple syrup is made from sap from sugar maple trees—trees that are also known as rock maples or hard maples. Maple syrup is a North American product; Canada produces most of it, and in the United States most of it comes from Vermont and New York. Native Americans in the northeastern part of the continent were the first to make it, by cutting the bark on trees and letting the sap drip out.

AFCA Names Tucker All-American - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

Syracuse running back Sean Tucker picked up his fourth All-America honor of the five NCAA consensus teams, earning American Football Coaches Association Second Team honors.

Tucker finishes the All-America circuit with a first team selection from the FWAA and second team accolades from the AP, Walter Camp and AFCA among the five consensus teams. He has also picked up a bevy of All-America recognition from other major publications like ESPN, The Athletic, Pro Football Focus, Phil Steele and others.

Tucker returns to the Syracuse as the headliner of a squad that returns 17-of-22 starters on offense/defense next season. The record-breaking running back was the top offensive vote getter on the All-ACC team this year, during a season where he set the program's single-season rushing record that had stood for 42 years (1,496). He was also a unanimous All-ACC selection by the AP.

The Maryland native finished the regular season ranked fourth nationally in rushing, while also sixth nationally in all-purpose yards per game (145.9), despite only collecting his yards via rushing and receiving. He finished the year with 14 total touchdowns, a program record nine 100-yard games and a program record seven consecutive 100-yard games. He also became the first player in program history to have 100+ yards rushing and receiving in the same game vs. UAlbany. A semifinalist for both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Awards, Tucker heads into 2022 as one of the nation's premier players.

Tucker is the fourth Orange player in the last four years to earn All-America status and first on the offensive side of the ball. Andre Cisco (2018), Andre Szmyt (2018) and Sterling Hofrichter (2019) all were named All-Americans by at least two of the five consensus teams.

WATCH: Syracuse football coach, Dino Babers did not go to one local H.S. football in 2021 (cnycentral.com; video; Singh)

Syracuse football head coach, Dino Babers was asked about his “pitch” to players he recruits and why they should come to Syracuse University.

Dino Babers also told CNY Central that he did not make his way to any high school football games in Central New York this football season. Syracuse University played two Friday night games this season, a time when we see most of the Central New York high school team's playing games.

Pitt nets 12 football recruits on early signing day (sharonherald.com; Filipcic-Godsey)

Pitt football announced 12 players in the 2022 recruiting class as the National Letter of Intent Day early signing period began on Wednesday.

Recruits could begin sending in their signed commitments at 7 a.m. local time. Local product Sean FitzSimmons, a three-star defensive lineman from Central Valley High School in Monaca, was the first to send in his signed letter just after 7 a.m. Wednesday. FitzSimmons was the recipient of this year’s Bill Fralic Memorial Award, which is awarded to the top senior lineman in the WPIAL.

“It seems like in the last couple years, western Pennsylvania has been a hotbed for defensive linemen,” Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said.

Pitt has signed four defensive linemen from the WPIAL in its two previous recruiting classes.

Pitt also added defensive end Samuel Okunlola, who announced his commitment live on CBS Sports on Wednesday afternoon. Okunlola is rated a four-star recruit by Rivals and a three-star recruit by 247 Sports. The Massachusetts native held offers from more than 50 schools, including Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Clemson, Penn State and West Virginia. When announcing he would be spending the next three to four years in Pittsburgh, Okunlola said it was the Panthers’ prowess in sacking the quarterback in recent years that led him to choose Pitt. Okunlola is the fifth four-star defensive lineman in Pitt’s three most recent recruiting classes.

Sam Hartman will return; All-ACC QB back in 2022 for Wake Forest - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Sam Hartman is hoping for more of the same in Winston-Salem: a 2022 encore. Following one of the best seasons in program history, Hartman seemed to announced on his Instagram account that he plans to return to Wake Forest for the 2022 season.

Hartman was named Second Team All-ACC this season.

— Conor O'Neill (@ConorONeill_DI) December 16, 2021

During the 2021 campaign, while Hartman led Wake Forest to an Atlantic Division title, the star quarterback threw for 3,924 yards and 36 touchdowns. Hartman completed 58.8 percent of his pass attempts, while averaging 8.4 yards per attempt.

As the point man for one of the most explosive offenses in the FBS, Hartman also ran for 11 touchdowns.

Hartman leads the ACC with 33 pass completions of 30+ yards, which also ranks second among FBS quarterbacks.

Still technically a redshirt sophomore, Hartman is in the midst of his fourth season with Wake Forest. As a true freshman in 2018, he started nine games for the Demon Deacons. Hartman played in four games during the 2019 season, while serving as Jamie Newman’s backup, and took a redshirt.

During his four seasons with the Demon Deacons, Hartman has thrown for 8,962 yards and 69 touchdowns.

Too Bad There’s Not A Mediocrity Bowl. The ACC Might Get Two Teams. (DBR; Jacobs)

Yes, ACC basketball is struggling. Struggled last year too when it came to poll standings, national championship contenders, NCAA tournament representation and success.

And yet ACC football has fared even worse this season, defining mediocrity in 2021.

Tacit recognition of this state of affairs is found in the fact that 4 of 15 head coaches who worked ACC sidelines this year are gone. No league squad finished in the top 15 in the final AP poll, a state of affairs that recalls the ACC’s pre-Florida State days.

The ACC’s prospects have drooped to such an extent, for the first time since the College Football Playoff was instituted in 2014 not even its best team qualified to compete for the national championship.

Football and basketball programs boast of their postseason participation. And while it’s true inclusion in the NIT, or other basketball tournaments not even sponsored by the NCAA (some of them pay-to-play), isn’t much of a recommendation, football bowl inclusion arguably counts for even less.

Break even on the playing field, and you’re in. Teams and those who follow them count wins and losses throughout the year, hoping to win six times regardless of opponents to qualify for a bowl. Rather a modest aspiration.

There are 42 bowl games, meaning 84 berths to fill. And, guess what? This year there are 84 bowl-eligible teams.

Twenty-one of those slots are occupied by squads that were 6-6. Add Hawaii, which got a spot in the Hawaii Bowl despite a 6-7 record, and better than one in four bowl participants finished with a breakeven record or worse.

Of the ACC’s 10 bowl teams, half finished the regular season with minimally adequate 6-6 records: BC, Louisville, UNC, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Despite getting bowl bids, both Virginia squads ended the season in the market for a new coach.

The State of Mike Norvell, 2021-12-16 (RX; HM)

The State of Mike Norvell, 2021-12-16

What can we say about the head coach of the Seminoles? David Hale knows...

2 true things:

1) Mike Norvell lost the No. 1 recruit to an FCS school coached by FSU’s most famous alum while Jimbo Fisher has top-ranked class.

2) Norvell has the No. 17 class - 1 behind Clemson & well ahead of UF & Miami - despite a team that’s had 4 straight losing seasons.
— ️♈️ (@ADavidHaleJoint) December 15, 2021
It's tough to evaluate the job that Mike Norvell has done at Florida State. On the one hand, he's lost a lot of games. Some of those - like the Jacksonville State game this season - he clearly should have won.

On the other hand, he has shown promise in a few games (e.g. UNC in 2020), and he's been able to recruit at a high level despite the losing records. Maybe people shouldn't be upset that he lost the #1 recruit in the nation, but instead be impressed that he had him on the hook as long as he did. Plus, most would have to agree that the talent level when Norvell arrived in Tallahassee was as low as it's been in decades, but he has been improving it.

Still, sooner or later all coaches are judged for one thing: wins and losses. Yes, FSU has faced some of the toughest schedules, not just in the ACC, but the entire country. In 2021, 9 of the 12 teams the Noles faced are now bowl-bound, including four top 25 teams. Besides Clemson and Florida every year, he's also had to deal with a rising NC State and a rising Miami team, plus Notre Dame in back-to-back seasons.

Here she is: Miss America.

Miss Alaska Emma Broyles was crowned Miss America 2022 during the competition’s 100th anniversary event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut Thursday night. The winner, selected out of 51 contestants, receives a $100,000 college scholarship along with a crown, sash and a six-figure Miss America salary.

According to NJ.com, Broyles stood out with her answer during the challenge portion of the competition, in which the Top 3 finalists were asked what they would do in a real-life situation. Broyles shared how she’d respond if she was at an event and a male rep of a Miss America sponsor made inappropriate comments towards her.

“Women should never be treated like objects,” Broyles said.

Two Syracuse University alumnae were in this year’s pageant. Miss Massachusetts Elizabeth Pierre, a 2019 SU graduate, and Miss Pennsylvania Meghan Sinisi, a 2017 grad who was SU’s baton-twirling Orange Girl and won Miss Syracuse in 2015, competed Thursday.

Pierre, who majored in human development and family science at Syracuse University, was second runner-up. She performed a contemporary dance for the talent portion and called for lowering the voting age to 16 on a platform called “We Hear You: Empowering Youth Voices.”

FSU fans are growing impatient with Mike Norvell. I mean, his recruiting class slipped all the way down to 13th!

(Oh, to have such problems!)
