Visit the Zoo Day takes place during the holidays, between Christmas and New Year's Day, at a time when children often have off from school. Family members who live out of town are often visiting as well. Given these circumstances, Visit the Zoo Day provides a great way for families to bond during the holidays.
A Zoo—short for a zoological park—is a place that contains animals and exists to entertain, educate, engage in scientific research, and focus on conservation. Early zoos, known as menageries, were private collections of animals held by the wealthy. They existed as early as 2,500 BCE, being found in Egypt and Mesopotamia. They were found soon afterward in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. Aztec Emperor Montezuma II had one of the first collections of animals in the Western Hemisphere.

SU football will hire 2 former Virginia assistants to help lead offense (report) (PS; Mink)
Syracuse football is set to hire two former Virginia assistants to help guide its offense during the 2022 season, ESPN reported Sunday.
Robert Anae is expected to be the Orange’s new offensive coordinator, with Jason Beck coaching quarterbacks, according to the report.
Syracuse has not announced the hirings.
The two names were first linked to Syracuse last week, but Sunday’s report is the strongest indicator yet the two will be joining Dino Babers’ coaching staff.
The timing of the report comes on the same day Virginia’s bowl game was canceled because of Covid issues in its program, ending its season. Beck was expected to call plays in the game.
The pair had worked under head coach Bronco Mendenhall for each of the past nine seasons (six at Virginia and three at Brigham Young), helping guide offenses with dual-threat quarterbacks and showing an ability to field productive offenses while withstanding injuries to the starter.

Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall obviously doesn’t have anything to prove when he brings the Cavaliers to Provo on Saturday to face a BYU football program that he guided for 11 seasons and produced 99 wins and 11 bowl appearances.

But his offensive coordinator probably feels like he does.
That would be Robert Anae, the former Cougars offensive lineman who was Mendenhall’s OC for two stints in Provo. Anae believed he should have been tabbed to replace Bronco after his departure in 2015, but athletic director Tom Holmoe instead went a different direction.
The job went to Kalani Sitake, who has actually been more successful at BYU in terms of wins and losses than Mendenhall has been in Charlottesville, albeit against a lesser string of opponents overall. Sitake is 44-28 at BYU; Mendenhall is 36-34 at Virginia.
Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. MDT Saturday, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

Anae was not made available to non-local media this week, but clearly he has an ax to grind against the school he played at for four years (1981-84) and coached at for 11 — first as a graduate assistant in 1990-91, then as offensive coordinator from 2005-10 and again from 2013-15.
And he’s bringing an offense that is sharp enough to get it done.
Led by sensational junior left-hander Brennan Armstrong, easily the best quarterback the Cougars will face this season, Virginia is at or near the top of many offensive categories in the country.

This afternoon, it was announced that former Virginia offensive coordinator Robert Anae (pictured, above) and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck have been reportedly hired by Syracuse. The hirings have yet to be finalized, but reputable reporting leads us to believe they’re legitimate. The two have been tied to Syracuse for the past week, and they’d be the latest assistant coaches to depart Virginia after head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s resignation and the team’s Fenway Bowl cancellation. Just hope these two don’t welch the same way former defensive coordinator Zach Arnett did.

Syracuse Football: Is the Orange’s Chris Elmore a tight end or a fullback? (itlh; Fiello)
Earlier in the 2021 season, Syracuse football senior Chris Elmore announced he would redshirt and return in 2022. Chris missed multiple games this season due to injury as well as unknown reasons earlier in the season.
Chris Elmore, also known affectionately as The Rhino, was one of the returning 5th-year seniors and a player I felt could be a key player. Unfortunately, we did not see him much but when we did, he did have some impact on the game.
Elmore has played defense, special teams, offensive line, fullback and tight end in his time at Syracuse. His ability to play multiple positions along with his personality has made him a leader on this team which could be very helpful in 2022.
This ability also allows head coach Dino Babers to continue to play chess with opposing coaches as well. Where will they play him in 2022? Will they line him up at fullback and block for a possible Heisman candidate in running back Sean Tucker? Will he line up at tight end where he can help block at the line and also catch passes?
Syracuse football player Chris Elmore will be a pivotal piece next season.
Cuse.com currently lists him at fullback, which does make sense if you think about assisting Sean Tucker possibly having an even better season than he did in 2021. It also could help on short-run situations like 4th and inches or goal line stances needed to just punch it in.

Syracuse loses a legend
The year began with sad news. Floyd Little, a three-time All-American who wore the legendary No. 44 at Syracuse and was enshrined in both the NFL and College Football Hall of Fame, died on Jan. 1 at the age of 78 after being diagnosed with cancer.
The Syracuse football program wore a memorial patch during the 2021 season to honor Little’s legacy.
Little was honored at the Carrier Dome during halftime of the Syracuse-Clemson football game. His widow, DeBorah, said that day that Floyd’s dream was to see their grandson, Blaze Little-Jones, wear the No. 44 at Syracuse.

That makes at least four teams sitting out (Texas A&M, Hawaii, Virginia, and Boston College) and three bowls cancelled (Hawaii, Fenway, and Military). It also leaves three bowl-eligible teams without a bowl or a bowl partner: Memphis, SMU, and East Carolina. Notice a common denominator? All three hail from the American Athletic Conference, which is taking the brunt of the bowl cancellations so far this year.

It seems that the ACC and its member schools recently sent out surveys to a number of supporters and fans. The survey asked a number of questions about programming on the ACC Network, but it also asked them to rate ACC football in a number of categories - and compare the other power five conferences on the same things.Highlights of the Survey Questions

What does all this mean?
Rather than standing by as ESPN molds the ACCN into its "non-revenue sports channel", the ACC is going to the negotiating table armed with statistics on what fans actually want. I think this is great! Let's hope this means NFL draft coverage will never get preempted by a discussion of lacrosse...
I'm not sure what's the ultimate goal of rating the P5 conferences, but it can't hurt to get an honest look at how the fans see things. I hope the folks at headquarters are sitting down when they start reading the results..

NY oks $1M to bring food market, education center to Erie Canal building (PS; Moriarty)
The state is providing $1 million to assist with the transformation of the historic Gere Block building on Syracuse’s Far Westside into a food market, education center and co-working space.
The $978,396 grant is among $81 million in grants announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul to support 97 projects across New York through the state’s Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
Scott Dumas, CEO of Papyrus Business Solutions and a partner in the Gere Block project, said the grant is vital to his ability to obtain private financing for the redevelopment.
“Without it, a project like this can’t get off the ground,” he said. “It simply couldn’t happen.”
Built by the Gere family in 1874 and later expanded, the three-story building sits near the intersection of West Fayette Street and Erie Boulevard West. It is believed to have been used initially as an Erie Canal warehouse. At the time, the canal ran behind the building.
The canal was filled in and paved over in the 1920s, but a portion of the canal wall remains at the rear of the building. Until recently, the wall was hard to see because it was covered by weeds, but workers have cleared away much of the vegetation in preparation for the site’s redevelopment.
Dumas said his goal is to restore the building to its former status as a commerce hub. The building and the surrounding area were the center of what was the village of Geddes, which was annexed by the city in 1886. Adjoining properties held coal yards, salt sheds, a lumber yard and a planing mill.
Sanford Motor Truck Co., a maker of fire trucks, occupied the building from 1913 to 1937. Strathmore Paints, a paint manufacturer, occupied it from 1942 until 2018. Its name still appears on the building’s exterior. The building has been vacant since Strathmore moved out.
Two anchor tenants are lined up for the project. The first floor will be occupied by a food cooperative run by EDEN Fresh Network, whose founders are Cornell University neuroscience professors Adam Anderson and Eve DeRosa.
The co-op plans to operate a grocery store and food wholesale business featuring products grown on local farms. Plans for the first floor also include a cafe, with covered outdoor seating.
