Welcome to International Pay It Forward Day!

The concept of "pay it forward" is nothing new. The phrase may first have appeared in print in 1916, in the book In the Garden of Delight, although the concept goes back much further. Since 2007, there has been a yearly event devoted to it. International Pay it Forward Day is a "global initiative that exists to make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness felt across the world." Each year, people in over 80 countries participate by performing over 10 million acts of kindness. When small acts of kindness and giving are performed by millions of people, there is a potential for the world to be changed for the better, which is the ultimate goal of Pay it Forward Day.

Australia's Blake Beattie created the day, being inspired by Catherine Ryan Hyde's book Pay It Forward, which was published in 1999 and adapted into a feature film the following year. Pay it Forward Day was first held in 2007, and by its second year was being marked by people in five countries. By the fifth year, people in 35 countries were celebrating and there had been seven state proclamations and fifteen city proclamations. By 2017, people in over 80 countries were celebrating each year, and over 100 city and state proclamations had been made in honor of the day.

College football: Syracuse’s Black ready for the call, from an NFL team or the WWE (nny360.com; St Croix)

Josh Black grew up with two professional dreams — to play in the NFL or become a WWE superstar — and should soon get the opportunity to make one a reality.

The 6-foot-3 and 290-pound defensive lineman is one of six former Syracuse University football standouts hoping to hear his name called in the NFL Draft from today through Saturday in Las Vegas.

Black and his agent have received contact from five NFL teams in the past week as he hopes to surprise as a late-round selection or sign as a free agent soon afterward. He was also recently approached by a talent recruiter from World Wrestling Entertainment about a potential future in pro wrestling if football doesn’t pan out.

“Hopefully this is not the end of my football journey, I’ve been playing for so long, but whatever happens, happens,” Black said during a Wednesday phone interview. “I’m going to make the best out of it, whether it’s the NFL or if it’s the WWE, I’m going to find a way to make it the best. Whatever happens, we got to go with the flow and keep going.”

Black started training last December with Mercyhealth Top Performers in his hometown of Loves Park, Ill., at the conclusion of the SU season. He shared a trainer that has also worked with Green Bay Packers defensive end Dean Lowry and Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet.

Black also participated in the Tropical Bowl in January where he aimed to show NFL coaches and scouts his on-field intensity, overall athleticism and positive character traits reflective of a quality teammate.

“It would be so awesome to get an opportunity to play in the National Football League just because I played for so long, I put my blood, sweat, tears and everything into this sport,” Black said.

The 24-year-old Black started 48 of 60 games in his SU career, finishing with 155 tackles and 24 for loss, eight sacks, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks while contributing at defensive end, tackle, and special teams. He garnered 2021 All-ACC honorable mention.

Watch: 2022 Syracuse Orange Spring Football Game (yardbarker.com; video)

Coming off a tough 2021 season, the Syracuse Orange looked to turn things around in 2022, starting with a strong Spring Game performance. Redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Lamson and freshman running back LeQuint Allen each performed well with their opportunities. Freshman defensive lineman Francois Nolton Jr. also showed out with a sack and a forced fumble in the game.

BGB: If the P5 Splits (RX; HM)

BGB: If the P5 Splits

We mentioned comments made by Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick to the effect that there will eventually be a reorganizing of the FBS along the lines of "all-in for football" versus "academics first". It didn't take Big Game Boomer long to come up with one of his patented lists...

The Future Of College Football ⌛pic.twitter.com/g0FS45VtBX
— Big Game Boomer (@BigGameBoomer) April 26, 2022
Here's how BGB figures the split will impact the ACC:
Division 1 (all-in): BC, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
Division 2 (opt-out): Duke, Georgia Tech, Syracuse.

COMMENTS:

I'm a bit surprised that he put Wake in the first group, but fundamentally I don't have a problem with it. The Deacs are certainly more committed to football than, say, Duke or Syracuse, and they don't have "The Hill" holding them back like Georgia Tech does.
Notre Dame will also choose this group, although it's not clear if they'd remain affiliated with the ACC or go "all-in" with the Big Ten. More drama to come!

Other P5 teams BGB thinks will opt out:

B1G: Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Northwestern, Rutgers
Big XII: Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, TCU
Pac-12: Colorado
SEC: Mississippi State, Vanderbilt

So 12 more P5 teams, for a total of 15. That leaves 50 which would be all-in, along with a handful of teams currently considered "G5".

BOTTOM LINE:

While I find him entertaining, sometimes even educational, let's be honest: BGB doesn't know anything more than we do on this subject. Jack Swarbrick may know more than we do. At any rate, I think it's safe to say that a "pay for play", unlimited division of college football would definitely shake things up for a lot of schools.
#PLAUSIBLE.

Former ACC, NFL WR says Booth's tape tells you all you need to know (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)

ACC Network analyst and former Virginia Tech and NFL wide receiver Eddie Royal broke down what he saw on tape from Clemson star cornerback Andrew Booth Jr.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Clemson DB Andrew Booth, a versatile defender. Someone who can high point the ball, but also come up and make plays in the run game.

“Andrew Booth Jr. has everything you are looking for in a defensive back.”

UNC football adds 2 Ohio State transfers: CB LeJond Cavazos, DL Jacolbe Cowan - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

With more player movement than ever before, there’s seemingly another window for college football programs to add players via the transfer portal. When the season concludes, around the end of the calendar year, there’s a fair amount of movement. Now, though, more and more players will land to change programs following spring ball.

North Carolina and Mack Brown will benefit from this trend. This week, two former Ohio State Buckeyes committed to North Carolina: cornerback LeJond Cavazos and defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan.

Cavazos, a 4-star recruit in the 2020 class, played his prep ball at the IMG Academy. The 6-foot, 192-pound cornerback took a redshirt in 2020 at Ohio State; he then appeared in 10 games during the 2021 season, recording eight total tackles and breaking up two passes.

The 6-foot-4, 272-pound Cowan was also a 4-star prospect in the 2020 class. Cowan played prep ball for Charlotte (NC) Providence Day; he was a Top 150 prospect, too. Back in 2019, Cowan committed to Ohio State over offers from all of the power programs: Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, you name it. UNC and NC State offered Cowan, too.

Nice to see four ACC teams still on the list, along with our part-time member. Sets up the potential for these ranked-on-ranked match-ups:

#5 Clemson vs #7 Notre Dame
#5 Clemson vs #8 NC State
#5 Clemson vs #15 Wake Forest
#7 Notre Dame vs #2 Ohio State
#7 Notre Dame vs #14 BYU
#7 Notre Dame vs #18 USC
#8 NC State vs #15 Wake Forest
#17 Pitt vs #22 Tennessee

Not bad. The problem for the ACC: only four of these games come under the ACC tv contract. Hopefully another team in the Coastal division will get ranked so we can have another Pitt vs. ranked game (and if that team is Miami, we also get games versus Texas A&M and Clemson; UNC would also be another good one in terms of content multipliers).

Walt Price and his wife, Peg, watch a handful of runners during the year the 10-mile Mountain Goat Run through Syracuse was canceled because of Covid-19. The race usually attracts about 3,000 runners, who must run up and down two of the city's highest points. May 3, 2020Teri Weaver | tweaver@syracuse.com

How Walt Price, now 91, concocted crazy idea of hilly 17-mile race that became Mountain Goat (PS; Ditota)

Forty-four years ago, Walt Price had the audacious idea of organizing a 17-mile run through the city of Syracuse.

It would begin and end near his workplace, the downtown YMCA adjacent to Columbus Circle. It would include some of the students in his popular exercise class and some men who were training for a marathon. It would encompass four city parks, all of which perched atop Syracuse’s hilliest neighborhoods.

Back then, the running movement had entered a nascent stage. Jim Fixx’s 1977 book “The Complete Guide to Running,” would sell more than a million copies and spur an exercise and road running movement. Communities nationwide started planning and executing races.

And Price, who ran the YMCA’s morning fitness class, got to thinking.

Why not stage a race in Syracuse?

“On a Saturday morning, he formed this informal race where you would run out to one of the parks, run back to the start at Columbus Circle, run out to another park and then come back to the circle,” said David Rood, who participated in the 1978 run with his brother Dennis. “We did all four parks.”

“Walt organized it,” said retired judge Joe Fahey, who like the Roods was training for a marathon that year. “I don’t think there were more than 25 or 30 of us that did it.”

That informal run, dubbed the “Super Goat,” would blossom the next year into the mercifully scaled-back 10-mile Mountain Goat Run, a race that now routinely attracts 3,000 runners and has become a mainstay on the local running calendar.

And Price, who recently celebrated his 91st birthday with a stroll around the Woodland Reservoir and a game or two of pickleball, plans to walk the beginning of the 2022 Goat on Sunday morning with his daughter-in-law, Mary, by his side.
