Welcome to Pinot Grigio Day!

Ah Pinot Grigio, a zesty white wine that is as refreshing as a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer’s day. The second most popular white wine in America, Pinot Grigio (aka Pinot Gris) is a dry white wine that has a punchy acidity with flavors of lemons, limes, green apples and honeysuckle.

While most believe Pinot Grigio originated in Italy, it was actually born, like many of the most popular grapes of the world, in France, where it is known as Pinot Gris. Thought to be a mutation of the red grape Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris’ skins are not green like other white grapes, but instead have a greyish blue hue, which is what gives them their name.

Orange Watch: How Syracuse football schedules could look in the reconfigured ACC - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Last week we wrote about the challenging Power 5 non-conference opponents Syracuse has scheduled in the future. Now that the ACC is likely to remove the two division format as soon as next season, and move to a 3-5-5 scheduling rotation, we take a mock up look at what the Orange schedule could resemble the next couple of years.

An instant bonus of ACC football scrapping the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions is that Syracuse would no longer face perennial national title contender Clemson every season, but switch to every other season.

Instead, we would like to see Syracuse face former perennial national title contender Miami each season.

Under the 3-5-5 format every team would have three permanent league opponents on the schedule each year, plus five other conference foes alternating every other year, both home and away.

That means Syracuse would be guaranteed to face the other 13 ACC teams home and away over a four-year period, giving the players and coaching staff a true feel of playing a conference schedule.

For the Orange, Boston College and Pittsburgh are obvious geographical choices as annual opponents. For the third team, we’d like another former Big East rival not named Louisville. Instead, we would like that opponent to be Miami which would do a lot more for exposure in the fertile Florida recruiting region, than playing in Kentucky every other season.

It’s disturbing that SU and the ‘Canes have only met once in ACC play (27-19 defeat in 2017 at Miami), and UM hasn’t been inside the Dome in 20 long years (2002). The time to rectify that is beginning next season, instantly rekindling a sweet rivalry from a different era.

Plugging in BC, Miami, and Pitt as annual foes, here’s our take on the football schedule through one full cycle of the 3-5-5 format:

FSU football post-spring depth chart projection: Offense (tomahawknation.com; Mire & Meyerson)

Spring is coming to an end and after months of spring ball, the depth chart has loosely been brought together giving a glimpse into what the rotation may look like this fall.

The folks at Tomahawk Nation have put their heads together to come up with what we think the roster will be heading into fall camp:

FSU Spring Football Offensive Depth Chart

Quarterback

This was a pretty obvious choice with Jordan Travis as QB1. His accuracy continues to improve, and his mobility has never really been a question after rattling off that 66-yard touchdown run in 2019 against Boston College. The question is, who does the number two spot go to? As of now, Tate Rodemaker should get that nod, however, as the rest of camp develops pre-season, AJ Duffy could pull ahead. With Rodemaker’s experience in the season and in games, he should be a safe bet.

Running Back
The departure of starting running back Jashaun Corbin last season to the New York Giants will be felt. but there was (and is) still plenty of talent in that room. Add Oregon transfer Trey Benson to the mix and you’ve got a pretty decent battle for the number one spot. With not much film to go on, Benson showed in the spring game that he was more than capable of being that solid and explosive back that the ‘Noles had in Corbin. Only needing to play in one quarter of the spring game he managed 77-yards on seven carries and three 15+ yard runs.

Sharing the number one spot will be both Trey Benson and Treshaun Ward followed closely by Lawrence Toafili.

Tight-end

Camren McDonald
has the number one spot and has ever since Tre’ McKitty transferred to UGA. The redshirt senior started in 11 games last season but don’t be surprised if you see Wyatt Rector cutting across the endzone in enemy territory for a touchdown as the number two guy. He’s a capable ball catcher and will continue to transition from QB to TE. Beyond Preston Daniel as third in the rotation, you have a toss-up between Jackson West and Markeston Douglas, both with completely different skillsets who should see playing time throughout the season.

College football news: Paul Finebaum blasts "diminished" ACC - College Football HQ SI; Parks)

The future of college football is anything but certain. The new transfer portal, NIL rules, potential playoff expansion, and ever-bigger media deals all spell major change coming for the sport in years to come.

With all that change in mind, Paul Finebaum doesn't see the ACC catching up with the process anytime soon the way the SEC and Big Ten are.

ACC is a "diminished conference"

“I put very little weight into any of it because the ACC has become such a diminished conference,” Finebaum told WJOX-FM.

“I say that because it wasn’t long ago when they were nipping, pretty far back, but they were still nipping at the heels of the SEC and the Big Ten, especially because of Clemson. But now, it’s been marginalized."

Clemson was one of the two early dynasties of the College Football Playoff era, making six straight CFP bids and winning two national championships.

From FBSchedules: Tennessee, Virginia to open 2023 season in Nashville
By Kevin Kelley - May 16, 2022

The Tennessee Volunteers and the Virginia Cavaliers will open the 2023 season... at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023. The game will mark the fifth time that the Volunteers and the Cavaliers have met on the gridiron...
The Volunteers were previously scheduled to open the 2023 season on the road against the BYU Cougars, which was the second game of a home-and-home series. Per a copy of the Virginia contract obtained by Outkick, the first $2 million in ticket sales for the Tennessee-Virginia game will be paid to BYU as a buyout...
Virginia was previously scheduled to open the 2023 season at home in Charlottesville, Va., against the William & Mary Tribe. A new date for that contest was not announced.
There's even a nice hype video:

UNC RB Ethan Horton was picked right before Jerry Rice. Bad move.
There are plenty more examples where that comes from.

2022 Transfer Portal Winners and Losers (RX; HM)

2022 Transfer Portal Winners and Losers

Here's an interesting way to view transfer players: career snaps. After all, if you rode the bench at your previous school, that's a different situation from when a starter jumps ship.

Biggest Winner: LSU
Biggest Loser: UVA
ACC Teams on the Winning* Side of Transfers: Louisville, Miami, UNC, GT, Duke, FSU, Wake, VT, Notre Dame, BC
ACC Teams on the Losing* Side of Transfers: Clemson, UVA
It's interesting to me that the majority of players who transferred into or out of ACC programs fell on the "winning" side of the ledger (i.e. the ACC team gained more experience than it lost). I think this is due to losing young players while acquiring more experienced starters from other programs.

Honestly, I expected more of the "high-potential bench players", but apparently those players are not coming to ACC teams (although it's not clear if ACC teams are losing such players - maybe they are?)

Take this analysis for what it's worth.

* Remember, this is winning and losing according to number of snaps lost/gained. It's much harder to measure the actual quality of players. How good was the guy who left, and is the in-coming transfer player better or worse?

Looking Back to 1994: The Free Shoes U Scandal (RX; HM)

Looking Back to 1994: The Free Shoes U Scandal

From the [SI] Vault: May 16, 1994

If you want to understand how much college sports have changed in the past 30 years, you don’t have to look much further than this cover.

The tone it takes makes you think that Florida State committed far graver sins than what is alleged in Sonja Steptoe’s article. The “scandal” referenced in the headline is that at least seven FSU football players went to a Foot Locker and bought, cumulatively, about $6,000 worth of shoes and clothing. Players also allegedly received a total of $10,000 in cash payments—peanuts compared to what their contemporaries are earning under name, image and likeness deals...

My, how times have changed. Today, if you offered this to a star CFB player, he might laugh at you!

How a family of Syracuse entrepreneurs used a doomed church to save the city symphony (PS; Struck)

Dan Feng had the old St. Peter Church building on James Street to himself on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. He fiddled with the switchboard behind the stage to bring up the house lights in the cavernous hall, then walked past rows of empty pews towards the front of the building.

“The acoustics were terrible in here,” he said, disappearing up a winding staircase to the second floor balcony.

Not so bad now, though, after his family added sound treatments to the old building. The stage is also much bigger than it used to be, lengthened at the request of Syracuse’s local orchestra.

The Fengs partly own the old church, now named Inspiration Hall, and donated the space to Syracuse’s Symphoria orchestra when the pandemic forced live music into an extended intermission.

The Fengs have supported Symphoria financially and otherwise for years, since Dan’s parents emigrated to the city in the 1960s from Taiwan and eventually started their tech business downtown in the late ‘80s.

“We don’t want to think, especially after the past two and a half years, where we would be without them,” said Pam Murcheson, Symphoria’s executive director.

I could care less about not having a men's hockey team. However, we eliminated wrestling and baseball decades ago. The reason was $$$$$, about the same time when we started having women sports. Syracuse has never been a university short of money and you have to wonder sometimes what is more important with a first class institution of higher learning, the students or money? The Ivy League isn't much different these days either.
