Welcome to Accounting Day!

While accounting may seem like a boring profession, it’s vital to every business out there. Without accountants, people won’t get paid promptly nor be able to understand their debits and credits. Even with an accountant, these can still be hard to understand. Accounting is work that isn’t something many people enjoy.

Accountants enjoy the prospects of so much that they form their whole career around managing numbers and company finances. That’s why, for those mathematicians out there in the industry, there is International Accounting Day to celebrate!

Dino Babers hires 2 new members among revamped recruiting staff (DO; Cirino)

Syracuse head coach Dino Babers made three changes to his recruiting staff this offseason. In March, Gino Gigliotti was promoted to Director of Recruiting while Babers hired Khalil Ahmad and McKenzie Bostic to serve as the team’s Director of High School Relations.

Gigliotti has been a member of Syracuse’s recruiting staff since 2019. He spent two years as a recruiting analyst at Coastal Carolina and was a defensive quality control coach at SUNY Cortland — his alma mater — in 2016.

“Gino has worked his way up and done an outstanding job in his time at Syracuse,” Babers said in a release. “I’m excited about the direction of our recruiting department with the addition of Khalil and McKenzie under Gino’s leadership.”

Ahmad spent the past season working in player development at Rutgers, previously coaching at Patterson East Side (N.J) High School.

Bostic was previously a Player Care Coordinator with Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew, where she worked for two seasons. Beforehand, she worked in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ events and entertainment department. A 2019 graduate of Ohio State, Bostic also helped out with the Buckeyes’ football program as a recruiting and administrative assistant.

“Khalil and McKenzie bring great energy to our recruiting efforts and have made an immediate impact in their short time at Syracuse,” Babers said.

Syracuse’s prior Director of High School Relations, Deon Maddox, will now become the team’s Director of Player Development/Alumni Relations, a role he assumed in March.

Syracuse Football: Pitt, BC as permanent ‘Cuse foes makes perfect sense (itlh; Adler)

If Atlantic Coast Conference officials move forward with their new 3-5-5 scheduling model under consideration, two permanent foes on the yearly calendar for Syracuse football could likely be Boston College and Pittsburgh, according to the ‘Cuse athletic director.

Chris Carlson of Syracuse.com published a piece in which he detailed recent comments made by ‘Cuse athletic director John Wildhack on the fabulous Orange Nation program, which airs on ESPN Radio Syracuse.

In his interview on Orange Nation, Wildhack said that Syracuse football annually playing Boston College and Pittsburgh, should that end up occurring, would “make a tremendous amount of sense. We’ve played them frequently. They are geographic rivals. That third opponent, it gives the conference a little more flexibility where teams might want to be in certain markets, certain matchups might be more attractive for ESPN or the ACC Network. We’ve tried to create some flexibility for that third spot.”
When Wildhack refers to that third foe, this is where the proposed 3-5-5 scheduling model within the ACC comes into play. The conference’s two divisions would get eliminated, and here’s how this scheduling model would work.

Every league member would have three permanent foes on their schedule season after season. The remaining ACC teams would get paired into two groups of five squads that would rotate in and out every other campaign.

Syracuse football and its peers are waiting to see if the ACC changes its scheduling model.

Wildhack said he’s hopeful that this new scheduling model in the conference “can get … over the finish line and potentially it could be in place in 2023.”

I’ve said more than once that I’m fine with the two ACC divisions, the Atlantic and the Coastal, getting the boot. The 3-5-5 model would also nix these sometimes long timespans in between when certain ACC squads compete against one another.

Given that Syracuse football has lengthy historical series with Boston College and Pittsburgh, and the geographic proximity as well, it’s completely logical if the Eagles and the Panthers end up as permanent opponents for the ‘Cuse.

Blue-chip WR Tyler Williams breaks down top 10 with two officials set (247sports.com; Irvins)

Lakeland (Fla.) four-star wide receiver Tyler Williams used Mother’s Day and his mother’s birthday to officially narrow down his evergrowing list of suitors to 10 schools: Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Syracuse, USC and USF.

Williams is one of the more unique soon-to-be seniors in the Sunshine State for the 2023 recruiting cycle as he grew up primarily playing quarterback in the local youth football leagues and at one point thought that basketball might be his future. After all, he picked up a hoops offer from Florida Gulf Coast as a sophomore. But after transferring into Lakeland last year, and changing positions, Williams quickly figured out that some of college football’s best want him to catch passes on Saturdays.

Syracuse: “They are also going to let me play basketball. They think I’m an athlete. Not too many schools give a football player the opportunity to play basketball because it’s a lot of work, but they feel like I can handle it.”

Is 2022 the Toughest Schedule Louisville Football Will Have Faced Since Joining ACC? (cardchronicle.com; Shea)

Yesterday virtually every sports book under the sun published their ACC win total projections for 2022, which is normally one of my favorite days of the year. However, what fans saw for Louisville wasn’t exactly inspiring as the majority of casinos have the Cardinals’ win totals set at 5.5 or 6.

Just one ACC team has a win total in the double digits: Clemson (10.5)

Check out the regular season win totals for every ACC team ⬇️
— Caesars (@CaesarsSports) May 17, 2022
Needless to say, 5 or 6 wins will likely have a majority of the fanbase calling for Scott Satterfield to be fired. And so with this news the big conversation of the day was once again “how many games does Satterfield need to win to keep his job?” It’s a valid one, especially with the new recruiting wrinkles thrown on top of everything, that I expect every local radio show and website to discuss endlessly this summer.

But what I’m more interested in is the why.

Many fans may already be groaning, “of course we’re only projected to win 6 games when Satterfield’s our coach.” Maybe there’s some truth to that, but let’s look at the numbers. It’s truly bizarre to see any college team who ranks 14th* in the country in returning production and is projected 29th overall* in the country projected to win only half of their games.

*Now, to be fair these numbers were published months ago, so I expect to see some movement once they get updated and all transfers have been accounted for. But nothing drastic.

The usual and easy answer is the schedule. But for a fringe Top-25 team, their schedule would have to be historically difficult for them to go .500, right?

Welp. Turns out, it might actually be.

Florida State Football: Will the Seminoles Make a Bowl in 2022? (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

Florida State has just one bowl appearance over the last four seasons and hasn't recorded a winning record since 2017. Coach Mike Norvell went 3-6 in '20 but improved to 5-7, with four of those losses coming by one score last season. The Seminoles seem to be heading in the right direction under the third-year coach, but it's crucial for this program to show more on-field progress this fall. Quarterback Jordan Travis returns after recording 207.4 total yards a game last season, and the defense brings back seven starters after limiting teams to 26.5 points a contest.

Is Florida State on the right path and poised to show marked improvement in the win column this fall? The Seminoles have an early test in New Orleans against LSU on Sept. 4, followed by games versus Louisville (road), Wake Forest (home), NC State (road) and Clemson (home) before mid-October. Although Norvell isn't atop the hot seat list for '22, progress in the on-field product and win column is a must to keep this program trending up going into '23 and beyond:

NC State aims for elusive ACC title with the 'best' quarterback in college football - stuartabsolon (stuartabsolon.com; Absolon)

For all of the broken records and breakthrough moments NC State celebrated during a nine-win season in 2021, Dave Doeren is still upset and unsatisfied.

“We still didn’t win the ACC last year,” the NC State coach said.

Doeren enters his 10th year leading NC State still disrupted the Wolfpack’s bowl game in December was canceled just hours before kickoff. The opportunity to secure the Wolfpack’s first 10-win season since 2002 — and a top-15 national ranking — vanished in an instant because of UCLA’s depleted roster numbers stemming from COVID-19 protocols and injuries.

The end of the season was a resounding thud to an otherwise successful year. The Wolfpack traveled across the country to San Diego to celebrate, not stew in disappointment, after a miraculous comeback victory against North Carolina in the regular-season finale. The Holiday Bowl was the setting for NC State to show the country why it’s on track to soon win the school’s first ACC championship since 1979.

“I told the players we had a great year,” Doeren told 247Sports last week at the ACC’s spring meetings in Florida last week. “Our goal was to win the ACC and it didn’t happen, so that’s where we have to live right now. We have to carry that chip around that we got better. We beat Clemson, which we hadn’t done. We went undefeated at home, which we hadn’t done. There are a lot of things we did well, but we didn’t win the league. And so that to me, is the goal.”

NC State has been knocking on the door for far too long to not be considered a threat, but the oh-so-close calls and road blocks also explain why so many fans and their coach are so frustrated after the 2021 season. They finished the season No. 20 in the AP poll, but have only ended the season in the top 25 three other times this century. Doeren has led NC State to six or more wins in the ACC in three of the last five seasons, with two second-place finishes in the Atlantic Division. Following Clemson up the standings every season is an old habit, but defeating the Tigers in double overtime last season knocked a substantial amount of dirt off the Wolfpack. There’s good reason to believe 2022 could be the breakthrough year for Doeren, who was hired away from Northern Illinois in 2013. No ACC team returns as many starters as the Wolfpack (17) and Doeren believes Devin Leary — not Ohio State’s CJ Stroud gold Alabama’s Bryce Young — is the best quarterback in college football.

“He’s the best in the country,” Doeren asserted. “I’ve said that already publicly. The way he performs under pressure, how he handles two-minute drives, the way he is at the end of the game, the way he is in the red zone, the way he is week to week, how tough he is, how he’s willing to take a hit.

“You know, a good quarterback.”

The Fighting Irish say they want to play a national schedule. How are they doing with that?

Ask any Notre Dame fan and they'll tell you: the Irish love independence because (among other things) it allows them to play a more "national" (as opposed to regional) schedule. Just how national? Links, News and Rumors 2022 May 19

It's getting closer, folks!
The Atlantic Coast Conference will hold its annual ACC Football Kickoff event July 20-21st in Charlotte, NC at The Westin Charlotte.
__________

It's official: divisions are no longer required. From ESPN: "Pac-12 scraps divisions after NCAA Division I Council votes to eliminate requirements for FBS conference title games"

The NCAA Division I Council announced Wednesday that it will relax restrictions on college football's conference championship games, allowing conferences to determine the teams that would participate in their respective title game. The decision paves the way for conferences to avoid having title-game matchups determined by division winners as well as possibly eliminating divisions altogether.
It didn't take long for a Power 5 conference to change things up. Minutes after the NCAA announcement, the Pac-12 announced that starting in 2022, the conference's title game would feature the teams with the two highest winning percentages.

Here's an interesting video where the author outlines sound reasons for his picks of 3 annual opponents for each conference (ACC first):

Harry’s, the fast-growing razor biz with the first name, teams up with CNY manufacturer (PS; $; Moriarty)

Harry’s has been making its razors exclusively in a century-old German factory since the company’s founding by two Boston guys 10 years ago.

But now the $1.7 billion razor company with the first name is hooking up with a Syracuse-area manufacturer.

Tessy Plastics began making razor cartridges for Harry’s Inc. at its plant on State Fair Boulevard in Van Buren, near Baldwinsville, earlier this month.

Under the agreement with Tessy, up to 2 million razor cartridges a month will be assembled in Van Buren, according to Harry’s. The new business will mean more jobs at Tessy, though exact numbers are not yet known, according to the manufacturer.

Jeff Raider, who founded Harry’s with Andy Katz-Mayfield, said the company will continue to make all its blades and many of the cartridges they go into in its factory in Eisfeld, Germany. However, he said the deal with Tessy will help diversify its supply chain.

“It’s good to have manufacturing in multiple locations,” he said. “God forbid something happens to that region in Germany, it would be helpful to have redundancy.”

Why Tessy?

Raider said the company, which is headquartered in New York City, chose Tessy to be its manufacturing partner for several reasons.

“One, it’s close to our customers,” he said. “Two, we care a lot about the U.S. economy and having jobs here. And three, it’s close to us, so we can go see it and our engineers, who are in New York, can go see it.”

Prior to choosing Tessy, the company evaluated the capabilities of multiple suppliers to ensure consistent quality with its German factory, and concluded Tessy could provide that quality, he said.

“Our team really connected with them and was just really impressed with their capabilities,” he said.

Raider and Katz-Mayfield met while college interns at a management consulting company in Boston and always dreamed of starting their own business. In 2010, while still a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Raider helped to found Warby Parker, a direct-to-consumer eyeglasses company that has also become a billion-dollar enterprise.
