Welcome to Flag Day!
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress, which was signed by Harry Truman. However, Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Before the government recognized Flag Day, citizens had been celebrating it and working to bring it to prominence for many years. Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisconsin, held the first formal observance of "Flag Day", or "Flag Birthday", at Stony Hill School in 1885. Cigrand continued to advocate for Flag Day and became the president of the American Flag Day Association and the National Flag Day Society. Cigrand is usually described as the "Father of Flag Day". On June 14, 1894, over 300,000 public school students celebrated Flag Day in parks across Chicago. In the 1890's, observances took place in other cities such as New York City and Philadelphia. Currently, the week of June 14th is known as "National Flag Week", and the president makes a proclamation urging people to fly flags for its duration. Flags are flown on government buildings as well.

Projecting Syracuse's depth chart after the spring: Who will emerge as perimeter playmakers under new OC? (247sports.com $; Bailey)
Syracuse football completed one of its most interesting springs of the Dino Babers era in April. The seventh-year head coach saw his new offensive coordinator install a pro-style scheme. He watched the defensive staff work to prepare its young linemen, tasked with paving the way for a bevy of veteran playmakers behind them. He monitored a special teams unit that's looking to bounce back, also under a new coordinator.
Now, as players shift to summer conditioning, it's time to take a look ahead. How did those 15 spring practices shape what the 2022 Orange will look like in the fall? Let's go position-by-position to project the team's two-deep depth chart.
We've already hit on quarterbacks, running backs and the offensive line. Now let's round out the offense with wide receivers, slot receivers and tight ends.

Official Visit Preview: Jalil Smith (SI; McAllister)
Class of 2023 Brooklyn (NY) Lincoln defensive lineman Jalil Smith is set to officially visit Syracuse this coming weekend. The 6-5, 230 pounder has been a priority target for the Orange for a while. Here is a look back at his recruitment.
First Offer
Smith's first offer came back in August of 2021 when Syracuse extended a scholarship opportunity. While Syracuse was the first offer, other power fives were expressing interest including Indiana, Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Boston College. His primary recruiter with the Orange is Nick Monroe.
"Yeah we speak almost daily," Smith said. "It's (the relationship) really good. He tells me about everything."
Recruitment Since
Despite the early power five offer, no other power five school has extended one to date. Others have jumped in the mix over the past 10 months including Stony Brook, Temple, UConn, Kent State and Bowling Green.

Official Visit Preview: Zyian Moultrie-Goddard (SI; McAllister)
Class of 2023 New Rochelle (NY) Iona Prep linebacker Zyian Moultrie-Goddard is one of several of Syracuse football's top targets that will be on campus for official visits over the next two weekends. Standing at 6-2, 240 pounds, Moultrie-Goddard has been one of the most sought after prospects in New York this cycle. Here is a look back at his recruitment to date heading into the June 17th visit.
The First Offer
Syracuse was the first to offer back in January 2020. The Orange sparked a bit of an offer run, as Arizona State and Tennessee both extended scholarship opportunities over the following six days.
Other Power Fives Enter The Fold
West Virginia offered in May 2021. The Mountaineers continued to pursue Moultrie-Goddard, staying in constant contact. Duke and Rutgers would later extend offers as well.
Visits And Camps
Moultrie-Goddard has taken a bunch of visits throughout his recruitment as well as participated in various camps. He attended the Under Armour Elite Underclassmen Camp in the summer of 2020. The following fall, he participated in the Elite V New York City Camp.
The spring of 2021 was when things got really busy for Moultrie-Goddard. He participated in the Rivals Camp Series, the All New York Showcase and other camps during the spring/summer.
During the fall, Moultrie-Goddard visited Notre Dame for the game against USC and West Virginia for the game against Oklahoma State. After his season concluded, Moultrie-Goddard visited West Virginia in December, Syracuse in February 2022 and a return trip to Central New York in March 2022. A trip to North Carolina to check out Wake Forest and Duke occurred in mid-March.

Here’s what the Phil Steele preview magazine said about Syracuse football, ACC (PS; Leiker)
Phil Steele’s annual college football preview magazine was released Friday, a reminder that the 2022 season is less than three months away from its first kickoff.
The magazine covers everything from the top players this season to each individual conference and team. The Syracuse football section specifically notes the program’s 17 returning starters, including running back Sean Tucker and quarterback Garrett Shrader, and the work done by coach Dino Babers to solidify the defense last season.
Shrader is Steele’s forecasted starting quarterback, with Florida transfer Carlos Del Rio-Wilson in the second position and Michigan transfer Dan Villari in the third. That could change, though, especially with new offensive coordinator Robert Anae at the helm. Steele notes that Anae could be the key to unlocking a new level of offense that pushes the Orange to their first winning season since 2018.
But despite having one of the most experienced returning rosters in the FBS, the Orange is still projected to finish last in the Atlantic Division.
Just like last season, Steele predicts Syracuse to be favored in four of its first five games – against Louisville, Connecticut, Purdue, Virginia and Wagner – and then struggle in the back half of the schedule. The Orange have the 12th-toughest schedule in football this fall, second in the ACC to Louisville, which is ninth. The two programs kick off their seasons against each other at 8 p.m. Sept. 3 at the JMA Wireless Dome.

2023 wide receiver, cornerback Zion Tracy receives Syracuse offer (PS; Leiker)
Syracuse football is looking to expand its 2023 recruiting class and extended an offer to an in-state player Monday.
Zion Tracy, a multi-position athlete from Long Island, announced he had received an offer from the Orange via a phone call with defensive coordinator Tony White. Tracy attended the Dino Babers Football Camp at Syracuse and made an unofficial visit on June 4.
Tracy plays both wide receiver and cornerback. He attended Long Island Lutheran for high school.
Originally a class of 2022 prospect, Tracy opted to extend his recruitment by playing a season at St. Thomas More School, a college prep school in Oakdale, Connecticut. Since that announcement, he’s received offers from Connecticut, Temple and Rutgers among others. Tracy had briefly been committed to Temple before re-opening his recruitment on Dec. 1. His announcement that he would play an additional season at STM and become a 2023 prospect was made Feb. 9.
Anthony Red, one of Syracuse’s currently-rostered offensive lineman, is a product of St. Thomas More. He appeared in two games last season.

We’re hitting the 70s and that means the focus goes to some of the bigger players on the Syracuse Orange roster

2021 stats: Steve won his bet that Tyler would redshirt his first season in Syracuse.
2022 projections: After spring practice it appears that Tyler is firmly in the mix to be a backup at tackle. He’ll probably be on the special teams blocking units and could see time in short-yardage situations. Talk form the spring focused around Tyler’s skills so as he gets stronger he could find himself emerging as a starter in 2023.
How’d he get here?: He had an offer from Duke and Arizona as well as Army and Air Force so obviously academics were a strong suit in high school.

Name: Isaiah Jones
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: Redshirt Sophomore
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 203 lbs.
Hometown: Cocoa, Fla.
High School: Cocoa (via El Camino College)
2021 stats: Jones was active in four games last season which was down from 2020.
2022 projections: It’s hard to see him jumping over a number of receivers but as we’ve said before this is a new staff and a new opportunity for everyone to make their case for playing time. Maybe we see Jones used in red zone packages and contributing on special teams.
How’d he get here?: Played one year at El Camino College where he caught 19 passes for 238 yards and a score and then transferred to Syracuse.

College Football Fantasy Five: ACC Analytics, Systems and Trends (rotowire.com; Grays)
Even though there are no official college football games being played, it doesn't mean that we can't start preparing for the 2022 fantasy college football season. I've already revealed my top five new head coach landing spots with significant college fantasy football (CFF) implications.
Now I'm going to dig into each conference to find some interesting offensive trends with an emphasis on Offensive Yards Per Play data over the last five seasons. Offensive YPP is a great indicator for a team's true efficiency and is extremely relevant for CFF purposes. I'll also sprinkle in some team passing and rushing percentages which help us understand whether a team has a tendency towards a certain play style on offense. Please be aware that 2020 was an odd season with the COVID-19 protocols and a smaller sample size of games.
Here are five interesting trends and patterns that popped off the paper at me:

For 2022, Clemson has promoted Brandon Streeter, who has been with the team since 2015, to offensive coordinator. He inherits nine returning starters with loads of talent, so I believe there's some value to be had here as there will be some understandable recency bias for CFF drafts this upcoming fall. The fact remains that Clemson is the favorite to win the conference and RB Will Shipley is one of the most talented running backs in the country.

This has been the coolest the Miami Hurricanes head coach’s seat has been in a few years. The Athletic Director is in place, the head coach, and Miami is already working on facilities upgrades to boot. But how does the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference match up?

Mario Cristobal, Miami- Let’s get The U’s Cristobal out of the way first. Mario Cristobal could have a disastrous first season in Coral Gables and he’s 100% secure as the head man.Dabo Swinney, Clemson- Dabo ain’t goin’ no where. I don’t care if Clemson has another ‘down’ year of only 10 wins and no College Football Playoff appearance. Swinney has earned the patience at Clemson and has two new coordinators and a potential QB controversy on his hands.
Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh- Kenny Pickett is a Pittsburgh Steeler and Mark Whipple will be a Grumpy Gus in Lincoln this year. Narduzzi’s offense might take a step back without Pickett and Jordan Addison but the Panthers won’t slip below .500. Narduzzi is safe after a recent contract extension.
Dave Clawson, Wake Forest- The Clawfence has won 10+ games at four schools in a row now and their staff continues to innovate and do more with less. An 11-3 season bought Clawson even more time to continue to build.

ACC football: 10 biggest storylines heading into 2022 season (247sports.com; Kosko)
2022 should reveal plenty of contenders or more dominance by Dabo Swinney’s squad. Either way, it’s going to be a fun ride to watch ACC football in a few short months.
But there’s more than just the Tigers, as other teams could make a run for the title and even a College Football Playoff appearance. New coaches also headline a few programs, making them must-watches throughout the season.
Here are the 10 biggest storylines in the ACC going into the 2022 season.
1. CLEMSON BACK TO NORMAL?
The Clemson Tigers winning 10 games last year was actually a down year. So now, what happens in 2022? Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei needs to be better, but that has questions in itself. 247Sports Composite five-star freshman Cade Klubnik is lurking behind him, and it wouldn’t shock anyone if he saw some snaps this season. But at their peak, the Tigers can win the ACC and get things back to normal, at least in their eyes. The defensive line should carry that side of the ball, so it’s up to Dabo Swinney whispering to Uiagalelei to be better than 2021 and possibly make a run to the College Football Playoff.2. MIAMI HURRICANES A CONTENDER RIGHT AWAY UNDER MARIO CRISTOBAL?
There are a lot of expectations for Miami once again. The Hurricanes hired Cristobal away from Oregon to become a contender. Perhaps they can contend right away with quarterback Tyler Van Dyke under center. The ACC is considered open once again, and it’s pretty much a “why not us” mentality for Miami. While winning the conference is a lot of pressure, at the very least Miami can serve as a dark horse based on Cristobal’s success with the Ducks. The head coach did win two Pac-12 titles after all. The playoff might be out of reach, and it might take a recruiting class or two to become the class of the ACC, but Miami is a team to watch out for.3. CAN PITTSBURGH STUN ACC AND REPEAT WITH KEDON SLOVIS AT QB?
Pittsburgh had a loaded offense in 2021 led by Kenny Pickett and Jordan Addison. Now that they are both off to the NFL and USC, respectively, the team replaced Pickett with former USC quarterback Kedon Slovis. Slovis was pretty good at USC before injuries derailed his time out west. Now that he’s in a new system, who’s to say he can’t be productive in a new place and lead the Panthers back to the title game? Of course, a lot of it is dependent upon Clemson’s rise back to the top, potentially. But, Pittsburgh shouldn’t be underestimated if head coach Pat Narduzzi has proven anything throughout his coaching tenure....

‘We could be Armory Square on steroids’: What’s next for Syracuse’s Inner Harbor? (PS; $; Moriarty)
When Ed and Danielle Neubauer thought about how to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, they opted for something they had never done before — a stroll along Syracuse’s Onondaga Creekwalk.
The Cicero couple parked at the Destiny USA mall, then walked along a landscaped waterfront path to the Syracuse Inner Harbor, a former state Barge Canal terminal between the mall and Franklin Square. There, they stopped for a drink at the new Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. taproom.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much else for them to do at the harbor. “Literally, there’s nothing else here,” Ed said.
But there could be so much more on the largest chunk of undeveloped and little-used land in Syracuse, which connects the Onondaga Lake area with the edges of downtown.
After three decades of talk, interest in the Inner Harbor is renewed. Local officials are looking for inspiration about how the community should use this valuable and mostly empty waterfront land.
So far, some of the ideas are ones we’ve heard before. Bars and restaurants. Public art and bicycle trails. Playgrounds and picnic areas. More festivals, like the Battle of the Wings, which drew thousands of people in May. More celebrations, like the annual CNY Pride Festival & Parade.
