Today we honor culinarians! They are cooks or chefs who are experts in cooking, preparing, presenting, and serving food. Today we celebrate and thank them for the many ways they use food to satisfy us!
While professional culinarians tend to work in restaurants or commercial kitchens, the culinary arts have a much humbler beginning. It is believed that the roots of culinary arts sprouted when someone either threw a piece of meat on a fire or found an animal that had been cooked by a forest fire. From there, advancements in agriculture, the expansion of culinary techniques, the domestication of livestock, and the introduction of earthenware and stoneware all helped with culinary development.

High school football: Mountain View's Daniels announces verbal commitment to Syracuse (fredericksburg.com; Staff)
Mountain View junior running back Ike Daniels, The Free Lance–Star’s All-Area football player of the year in 2021, has verbally committed to play his college ball at Syracuse University, the school’s website announced Friday. He is the ninth commit in the Orange’s 2023 class.
Daniels had paired down his college choices to Syracuse and Hawaii by mid-July, taking trips to both schools prior to making his choice, the website said.
Daniels had offers from several other Division I schools, include in-state ACC schools Virginia and Virginia Tech. He was also courted by ACC schools Boston College, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest. Arizona State, Michigan State, South Carolina and West Virginia were among the other candidates.
He is the No. 17 prospect in Virginia and No. 44 running back in the country, according to 247sports.com

The 5–10, 185-pound Daniels amassed 1,560 total yards and 18 touchdowns during the 2021 season for the Wildcats, who posted their best record (11–2) in school history and reached the Region 5D championship game. He led the team with 1,029 rushing yards—averaging 7.3 yards per carry—and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes for 531 yards and four scores.
Daniels told The Free Lance–Star last December that once he committed to a program, his plans were to play out his senior season, graduate from Mountain View early and enroll in college in January 2023 so he’ll be able to participate in spring practice.

SU football RB target Ike Daniels announces commitment (PS; Leiker)
Syracuse football has now secured six commitments from players who’ve made official visits this summer.
Three-star running back Ike Daniels announced his verbal commitment Friday, becoming the latest player to join the Orange’s 2023 recruiting class.
Daniels attends Mountain View High School in Stafford, Virginia. He announced his final two schools on July 13 — Syracuse and Hawaii.
Daniels made visits to both schools prior to his decision. He made a trip to Hawaii in April before even receiving his offer from Syracuse. He then visited SU on June 24 alongside other Orange commits LaNorris Sellers, Rashard Perry and others.
“First I would like to thank God for giving me the ability and blessing me to play the game I love,” Daniels wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “I would like to thank ALL my coaches that have been apart of my football career and helping me to become the student athlete I am today.”
Daniels is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. He also had offers from Virginia Tech, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wake Forest, among others. He is the No. 17 prospect in Virginia and No. 44 running back in the country.

Class of 2023 running back Ike Daniels announced his commitment to Syracuse football on Friday. A standout junior at Mountain View High School in Stafford, Va., he chose the Orange over other finalist Hawaii.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Daniels is rated three stars and the No. 44 running back this cycle by the 247Sports Composite. He took official visits to both Central New York and Honolulu last month and also holds scholarship opportunities from Arizona State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Boston College, UConn, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Virginia and Wake Forest.
SU cornerbacks coach Chip West extended Daniels a scholarship offer in late April.
Now Daniels becomes the ninth pledge in SU’s 2023 class, joining New Jersey speedster Muwaffaq Parkman as running backs in the group.
All verbal commitments are non-binding until the player signs a national letter of intent. That can be done during the early signing period in December or after National Signing Day in February.

Class of 2023 Stafford (VA) Mountain View running back Ike Daniels has committed to Syracuse, he announced on Friday. He picked the Orange over offers from Arizona State, Boston College, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia, as well as other finalist Hawaii.
"It was great," Daniels said after his official. "I loved the visit. We were able to see where the hosts were living, where we'd be staying if we were to commit there. It was fun meeting the coaches and being able to hang out with all of the coaches. Able to see the whole campus and football facilities."
Daniels had previously released a top two of Syracuse and Hawaii. He took official visits to both schools in June, but ultimately decided on the Orange.
The Mountain View High standout is the first player from Virginia, second running back and ninth player overall in Syracuse football's 2023 recruiting class. He joins quarterback LaNorris Sellers, running back Muwaffaq Parkman, wide receiver Bryce Cohoon, tight end David Clement, offensive lineman Jayden Bass, defensive lineman Rashard Perry, defensive lineman Jalil Smith and linebacker Zyian Moultrie-Goddard.
Daniels is the second commitment this week as Bass announced on Tuesday. The Orange is hoping to keep that hot streak going on July 30th when offensive line target Naquil Betrand will announce his decision. Syracuse is in the top six for Betrand along with Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Penn State and Texas A&M.

History vs. Syracuse: Despite being in the same conference, the Cavs haven’t played the Orange since 2015. Eric Dungey threw for two touchdowns and rushed for a third in that game, but it wasn’t enough as UVA won 44-38 in Triple OT. Overall, Virginia holds a 3-2 series lead, having won the last three matchups. They haven’t played in Syracuse since 2005.
Coach: Tony Elliott, first season. Bronco Mendenhall departed the program after leading it for six years, opening the door for Elliott. He’s spent the last 10 seasons coaching in some capacity with Clemson, but this is his first head coaching gig anywhere. He walked on for the Tigers in college and was eventually named a team captain in 2003. Before returning to Clemson, Elliot was a WR coach for FCS schools South Carolina State and Furman.
2021 Record: (6-6) (4-4)
Recapping Last Season:
The Cavs won the first two games of the year at home, then lost back-to-back contests at North Carolina and against Wake Forest. From there, they went on a long winning streak. After beating both Miami and Louisville by a combined three points, Virginia returned home for two more wins. That’s where the good times ended. First, a gauntlet of tough teams (BYU, Notre Dame, and Pitt) all got the better of this bunch before VT put the nail in the coffin by issuing UVA a fourth straight loss. Then, even though their 6-6 record got them a spot in the Fenway Bowl, the Cavs later withdrew due to COVID cases on their roster. It was the second straight year that they qualified for a bowl game but did not end up playing in it.
The pass-heavy offense was led by electric lefty quarterback Brennan Armstrong, whose transformation into one of the most successful arms in college was attributed to new Syracuse OC Robert Anae and QB Coach Josh Beck. His 4,449 passing yards were the 4th-most in the FBS - and that’s with only playing 11 games. He also had 31 touchdowns in the air, along with nine more on the ground, to 10 interceptions. Dontayvion Wicks hauled in 57 catches for 1,203 yards and 9 TDs as the top wideout, and TE Jelani Woods had 8 TDs as a prime redzone target. The team averaged the 2nd-most passing yards and 3rd-most total yards per game. I think that’s enough stats to demonstrate just how good this group was.

2022 Syracuse Football Preview: Offensive Line (waer.org; Barach)
The Syracuse offensive line was tricky to assess last season. On one hand, the Orange ranked top 20 in the nation in both yards per rush (5.22) and rushing yards per game (213.5). On the other hand, the unit gave up over 2.8 sacks per game. In fact, the ‘Cuse ranked 120th in sack rate, suffering a sack on one out of every ten pass attempts, per Football Outsiders. The offensive line created lanes for star running back Sean Tucker (1,496 rush yards), but also forced quarterback Garrett Schrader to escape collapsing pockets.
The advanced rushing numbers tell a complicated story as well. Syracuse ranked top 35 in opportunity rate at nearly 52%, per Football Outsiders. This stat measures “the percentage of carries (when four yards are available) that gain at least four yards.” Essentially, the line functioned at least sufficiently on 52% of normal run plays. The unit also ranked in the top 35 in "power success" at nearly 75%. This stat measures the percent of runs on 3rd or 4th down that are two yards or less that get converted for a first down or touchdown. But the Orange ranked 90th in "stuff rate," at just under 20%; on nearly one out of five rush plays, the running back was tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage.
Fans should expect SU to pass the ball more this season. In 2021 Syracuse ran the ball on over 60% of their offensive plays, ranking 15th in the nation. New offensive coordinator Robert Anae (hired from Virginia this offseason) plans to incorporate a higher percentage of passing plays. With that said, let’s introduce the guys on the offensive line.
Likely Starters
Since Fall Camp has not begun yet, the coaches have not designated official starting positions.Matthew Bergeron, Junior
Bergeron will start at left tackle this season. He played in all 12 games last year, the only member of the returning offensive line who can say that. He’s played in 28 games in his career at Syracuse, and is considered one of the top tackles in the ACC. In 2021, Bergeron led all left tackles in the conference in yards per rush going off the left tackle, per ESPN. This offseason, the 6-foot-5, 327-pounder has taken on a leadership role amongst the offensive lineman. He has the best chance of anyone on the Orange o-line to get selected in the 2023 NFL draft. Fans should expect another good season from the Canadian.
Dakota Davis, Redshirt Senior
Davis, should he get a starting job, will probably slot in at left guard. Bergeron noted that given their collective experience dating back to 2019, saying it feels like “[the two have] been playing together forever.” The 6’5” 336-pounder played in 10 games for the Orange last year, the second most of the returners.
In Competition for a Starting Spot
Enrique Cruz Jr., Redshirt FreshmanCruz, despite a lack of experience playing at the collegiate level, has a good shot at grabbing the starting right tackle spot or backing up Bergeron at left tackle. In the span of a year, the 6-foot-6, 303-pounder has shown lots of improvement. Bergeron has high praise for the youngster. Bergeron notes that Cruz Jr. “has lots of talent,” and added, “I think he’s definitely going to be an NFL type dude down the stretch.” Watch out for the Cruz, the Chicago native, becoming an impact player this season for the Orange.
Christopher Bleich, Redshirt Junior
Bleich began his career at the University of Florida, but transferred after making 13 appearances in the 2019 season. The NCAA denied his waiver claim in 2020 so he had to sit out that season. He returned to the field last year and played in eight games for S-U. The 6-foot-6, 335-pounder is described as a “real talented guard” by Bergeron. Bleich’s most likely position will be right guard. It’s also worth mentioning that he underwent hip surgery in the spring, but is good to go entering this season.
Carlos Vettorello, Redshirt Junior
About to begin his 5th collegiate season, Vettorello appeared in eight games last year. It was in the 8th game, at Virginia Tech, when he injured his lower body on a roll-up type of play. He missed the last four games of the season, and he presence was missed. He’s back now and in good shape for the 2022 season. The 6-foot-4, 299-pounder can play either center or tackle (two games at center, six games at tackle in 2021), but Bergeron notes that he’s actually more comfortable at tackle. It’ll be interesting to see where the coaches assign him, but along with Cruz Jr., Vettorello has been a guy that has impressed this summer.
Darius Tisdale, Redshirt Senior
In 2021, Tisdale’s role was to come in “relief duty” when a starter went down with an injury. He was a plug-in type of guy, and appeared in eight games. However, this season, he is expected to compete for a starting role, either at tackle or guard, two positions that he played last year.
Kalan Ellis, Sophomore
The Hawaii native appeared in nine games last season for the ‘Cuse. However, Ellis got in trouble in spots last year due to lack of quickness. Bergeron said that he’s lost some weight this offseason and is working on his agility and footwork. Should he win a starting spot, he’d probably play a guard position.
Josh Ilaoa, Sophomore
The 6’3” 302-pounder might have a chance to be the starter at the center position. Bergeron noted that the Orange will need the younger guys like Ilaoa to step up this season. The Charlotte native appeared in 11 games last season but made just one start.
Tyler Manguson, Redshirt Freshman
The Minnesota native, standing at 6’6” 286 pounds will also be competing for a spot. If anything, he’ll provide depth at the tackle position.
Conclusion
The Syracuse offensive line is not among the top units in the country, but it also isn’t horrible. Notable Twitter presence “Big Game Boomer” did not have the Orange o-line in his top 50 nationally, but that’s just one opinion. With a running back line Sean Tucker to block for, the 2022 Orange o-line could be a net positive for the team.

Enthusiasm surrounding new offensive coaches and the two key players charged with operating their game plan dominated discussion during Syracuse University's press conference at Atlantic Coast Conference Football Media Days.
Syracuse head coach Dino Babers and three player representatives — quarterback Garrett Shrader, linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron — spoke Wednesday before the two-day event wrapped at the Westin Charlotte Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
They each expressed excitement to unveil their revamped system under new offensive coordinator, Robert Anae, among a slew of topics covered in the 30-minute session.
ANAE, BECK WELCOMED ADDITIONS
Babers was instantly asked for insight on working with Anae and new quarterbacks coach Jason Back and offered praise for their impact in the spring and voluntary summer workouts.
The SU head coach entering his seventh season spoke of "walking the same path," as Anae with each having roots in the Western Athletic Conference through both BYU and Hawaii.
"He was one of those guys who I always felt like, if he became available, that he would be a good fit because we do really see things the exact same way," Babers said. "Him brining coach Beck along was just icing on the cake and he has done a fabulous job. I think he's one of the bright minds in college football, one of the up and comers."
Players also reacted favorably to the new environment on offense and believe they can quickly turn around a passing unit that ranked bottom 10 nationally last year.
Shrader spoke of keeping the facets that led SU to a prolific campaign on the ground, finishing 16th nationally in rushing, while incorporating elements of the imaginative passing game that Anae and Beck have produced in recent years together at Virginia.
"I think we'll be more explosive, run game and the pass game," Bergeron said. "You saw the way last year we were running the ball, and I think we'll be a little bit more balanced next year."

Syracuse Football: SU projected to face one of nation’s toughest schedules (itlh; Adler)
If Syracuse football is going to reach at least six victories this coming season and qualify for a post-season bowl game, the Orange will have to navigate a 2022 schedule that, at least on paper, is among the most challenging dockets across the country.
Brad Crawford, a national analyst with 247Sports, recently put out an interesting piece that detailed the projected 25 toughest schedules in 2022, according to well-respected expert Phil Steele.
By my count, there are four Atlantic Coast Conference squads included in Steele’s rankings of the 25 most brutal 2022 schedules nationwide.
Georgia Tech is No. 3, Louisville is No. 9, the ‘Cuse is No. 12 and Florida State is No. 18, per Steele. In a nutshell, if Syracuse football attains a half-dozen or more triumphs in the upcoming stanza, the Orange will certainly have earned it.
Syracuse football, on paper, has a rough, rough 2022 docket.
I’d like to point out that the ‘Cuse checks in at No. 12 in Steele’s ratings, while perennial College Football Playoff contender and Big Ten Conference heavyweight Ohio State is situated at No. 14.
The top 10, by the way, starts with Auburn at No. 1, followed by Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, LSU, Stanford, Indiana, Louisville and Rutgers.
The Orange, which lost its final three battles in 2021 to wrap things up at 5-7, will welcome seven foes to Central New York in 2022 while heading on the road five times.
During its first eight affairs this fall, six are at home, but then over the team’s last quartet of encounters, Syracuse football has a brutal stretch where it heads away from the Hill on three occasions.

FOX Sports Has Reportedly Made A Major Hire For College Football (thespun.com; Hodies)
Fox has taken away one of ESPN's best college football announcers.
Per Brett McMurphy of Action Network, Jason Benetti is leaving ESPN to join Fox Sports' No. 2 college football broadcast team.
Benetti is set to be partnered with Brock Huard.
Jeff Agrest of the Chicago Sun-Times first reported on Friday that the two sides were engaged in negotiations.
Even though Benetti is set to take on this big task, he's still going to call White Sox games on NBC Sports Chicago, per Agrest.
Benetti has also called the Winter Olympics for NBC and college basketball games for ESPN throughout his career.
Benetti and Huard will call the second-biggest game on the network each Saturday. The biggest game will be reserved for Fox's top broadcasting duo, which consists of Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt.

My 2022 ACC Preseason Football All-ACC Ballot, Order of Finish (247sports.com; Lemons Debro)
We are ever so close to football being played again, which also means we're really close to arguing over arguing over pointless preseason ballots and rankings.
This year... it was hard for the ACC. For a league constantly battered for being lesser than the other, the talent jumps out at you. Before diving in, I'll leave you with a couple of reminders:
- *Anyone* credentialed for ACC Kickoff can submit a vote. Some people will do extensive research while others... well we just saw Vanderbilt get a first place SEC East vote.
- We get to yell about the projected order of finish on July 26th while the All-ACC team and player of the year will be announce on July 27th.

Alright let's just get this out of the way, Sam Hartman was only topped by Kenny Pickett last year in the ACC player of the year race. So it would take something monumental to displace him. I also don't have a ton of issues with people picking any of the other five names
Devin Leary doesn't throw the ball away and was one of the best deep ball passers in the NCAA last year. Tyler Van Dyke makes NFL level throws and is on the hype machine that is Miami. Malik Cunningham isn't Lamar Jackson, but he's one hell of a quarterback and arguably the best athlete in the ACC. Brennan Armstrong's video game stats from last year can't be ignored.
If we look at last year, Sam Hartman was better than all of those quarterbacks, and if you look at #QBWinz he beat all but TVD because they didn't play. If we're trying to base this on projecting forward.. the RB/WR/OL groups that Hartman has set him up to improve on a season that was only matched/beaten by Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson.This one was an easy choice for me

Few college football coaches promote and defend their program and conference more resolutely than Pittsburgh’s Narduzzi. And this preseason he has a platform and a cause.
First, the Panthers are fresh off an ACC championship year in which they produced a Heisman Trophy finalist in quarterback Kenny Pickett and the nation’s top receiver in Jordan Addison.
Second, with the revelation of Southern California and UCLA bolting the Pac-12 for the Big Ten still fresh, never has chatter about the Big Ten and SEC lording over college football resonated louder.

Here Narduzzi cited his experience as a Big Ten defensive coordinator at Michigan State and Pitt’s 31-21 Peach Bowl loss to the Spartans in December, a game Pickett and Michigan State All-America running back Kenneth Walker skipped in favor of NFL Draft preparation. Further hamstringing the Panthers: Pickett’s backup, Nick Patti, was shelved by a first-half shoulder injury.
“I feel very confident, and again, it’s not being arrogant,” Narduzzi said. “It’s just kind of knowing the landscape and knowing what we played against in the Peach Bowl. Just would have liked to have our backup quarterback play the whole game. That’s just confidence. That’s no disrespect to the Big Ten or Michigan State. It’s just about Pitt and about the ACC.”

There was not a scoreboard Wednesday at the Westin Charlotte for the opening half of ACC Football Media Days, no statistics kept.
But there were some winners and losers.
Winners: Quarterbacks
The lineup included all the teams from the Atlantic Division and they each brought a returning starting quarterback.Yes, the Atlantic is loaded with signal-callers.
Quarterbacks in attendance were D.J. Uiagalelei of Clemson, Malik Cunningham of Louisville, Devin Leary of N.C. State, Sam Hartman of Wake Forest, Phil Jurkovek of Boston College, Jordan Travis of Florida State and Garrett Schrader of Syracuse.

"In the ACC, there are lot of great quarterbacks," Uiagalelei said. "We play in a conference with such great quarterbacks. I feel like every single team has a great quarterback. It's exciting."
"I think you're going to see a slugfest," N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said.
Loser: Commissioner
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips didn't sound much like a man who was working to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the fast lane of conference realignment.He sounded more like a man who might get left at a rest area.
As the Big Ten and the SEC work toward building two super conferences, poaching some of the top schools from other leagues, Phillips didn't exactly provide much comfort about the future of the ACC.

His message seemed to be: Please leave us alone.
"All neighborhoods (in college athletics) need to be healthy," Phillips said. "I love our 15 schools and I'm confident in us staying together."
Winner: Suit game
Cunningham said he went into a Men's Warehouse store two weeks ago to find something to wear at ACC Media Day.It took only a few seconds to find the right suit.
"It spoke to me," Cunningham said.
Loudly.
Cunningham walked to the stage wearing a red suit that would make Santa Claus jealous. From there, Cunningham added some red Prada shoes that sell for about $850 per pair. He didn't say how much he paid for the suit. No socks. Maybe he didn't have any money left.
"I think I look good," Cunningham said. "I know y'all do, too."
Loser: Birthdays
Syracuse coach Dino Babers had to spend his birthday away from family and friends. He turned 60 on Tuesday."Where else would you want to spend you birthday," Babers said, "but in North Carolina with the media."
There seemed to be a hint of sarcasm.

Commissioner Phillips has publicly encouraged all 14 ACC football programs to do their best at that sport, but is that really the best strategy? Some programs simply seem to have very low ceilings, but their success is not without cost: every win those schools earn in conference is a loss for someone else.The 2021 season was a bit unusual for the ACC because the teams with the largest fanbases were down, while the two division winners - Wake Forest and Pitt - both have relatively small fan followings. The championship game drew the worst ratings and fewest viewers ever at 1.5 and 2.661 million [LINK]. That wasn't because of the quality of the game or the quality of the teams - it was all about lack of fan support, plain and simple.
ANALYSIS:
So I dug a little further. Here are all of the rated ACC football tv games for 2021 after week #3 involving either Duke or Wake Forest. Why those restrictions? Because:I also tossed in a few other games for comparison purposes. The Duke and Wake games are marked in bold, and the "viewers" column is color-coded: games with less than 1 million viewers are in pink, while those over 2 million are in green:

CNY is in the midst of a hot streak so rare it’s happened only 10 times in 120 years (PS; $; Coin)
Central New York appears to be headed for a six-day stretch of 90-degree days, something so rare it happens less than once a decade.
Friday was the fourth consecutive day of 90 or greater, and today and Sunday are each expected to reach 93 degrees.
Syracuse has had six consecutive days of 90 degrees just 10 times since official National Weather Service records began in 1902.
The record for most consecutive days of at least 90 is eight, set in 1973. That was extraordinary because it happened in late August through early September, and Syracuse’s hottest month is July.
Eight of the 10 longest stretches of 90 and above occurred in the month of July. The most recent was 2020, when Syracuse sweltered under seven consecutive days that hot.
Central New York joins much of the U.S. that has been baking under high, sometimes record-breaking heat for days. Extreme heat affected more than 100 million Americans this week, from the Southwest to the Northeast.
President Joe Biden cited the heat wave when laying out a new plan this week to tackle climate change.
Syracuse, after a relatively cool June, has endured a hot, dry July. The average temperature this month so far is 2 degrees above normal, and rainfall is barely half of normal.
Since Tuesday, Syracuse has hit 90 every day. The peak was 95, on Wednesday, the hottest day of the year so far. That was just a degree shy of the record for July 20.
The record-high for today, July 23, is 98 degrees. Sunday’s high-temperature record is 93, which is also the weather service forecast for July 24.
A cold front is expected to pass through late Sunday, triggering thunderstorms and bringing high temperatures early next week into the low 80s, about normal for late July.
