Welcome to National Hamburger Day!

National Hamburger Day takes place twice a year, and there are other burger-related holidays throughout the year as well. Why more than one day for burgers? Is it because they are so good? Well, that may be part of it. Another reason may be there are so many people who claim to have invented the burger. Some sources say that Louis Lassen did it, at Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, on July 28, 1900. This is the reason why July 28 is one of the National Hamburger Days. The choosing of December 21 for a day devoted to hamburgers seems to be arbitrary and doesn't appear to be connected to anything in particular. No matter who came up with the hamburger, it was created sometime around the turn of the nineteenth century, and its popularity was boosted at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.

Class of 2024 Linebacker Nyreek Clyburn Has Strong Relationship With Syracuse Staff (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has put a concerted effort into recruiting New Jersey in the 2023 cycle, and those efforts have continued in the 2024 class. One of the top players in the state in 2024 is Paterson (NJ) Eastside linebacker Nyreek Clyburn. The Orange offered recently.

"Coach Monroe," Clyburn said. "Well he stopped by along with other coaches at my school and he promised me I will get that offer this summer. So last week he called me right before my seven on seven and offered me. I was excited and humbled at the same time because this year for me is gonna be personal. I was excited because I always talked about their program on TV didn’t expect Syracuse to look at me my junior year, so it’s a blessing."

The 6-5, 225 pound backer says he already has a strong relationship with Syracuse Defensive Passing Game Coordinator Nick Monroe as well as Director of High School Relations Khalil Ahmad.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #13, WR CJ Hayes (TNIAAM; Wall)

Name:
CJ Hayes
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: Redshirt Senior
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 208 lbs
Hometown: Bowling Green, KY
High School: South Warren

2021 stats: Hayes appeared in seven games last season as a safety/special teams player for Michigan State. He played wide receiver back in 2019 and had 13 catches for 141 yards.

2022 projections: Hayes was an interesting addition to the Syracuse Orange as a grad transfer. It seems like Syracuse has the numbers at wide receiver but he brings good size and experience so look for him to get an opportunity in camp to find a path to the two-deep.

How’d he get here?: Back in high school Hayes chose Michigan State over 18 other schools including Purdue. His recruiter at Michigan State was former Syracuse assistant coach Terry Samuel,

What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars all around and a top 10 player in Kentucky during his senior year.

Top 10 returning players at Syracuse feature RB Sean "Track Speed" Tucker (profootballnetwork.com; Mellor)

In what should be considered a make-or-break year for head coach Dino Babers, the top 10 returning players at Syracuse are loaded with talent. On both sides of the ball, the Orange feature players who should vie for All-ACC mentions and maybe even All-American honors when the season is finished. Headlined by their running back Sean Tucker, Syracuse could make some noise in the ACC and college football this season.
For every other conference’s top returning players: AAC | ACC | B1G | Big 12 | Conference USA | Independents | MAC | Mountain West | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

Top 10 returning players at Syracuse

We’re counting down all the top 10 players returning to action on every team — we’ll deal with transfers later — from Air Force to Wyoming, from Miami to Hawaii, and all in between. Here are the top returning players to Syracuse.

10) Dakota Davis, G

The long-standing right guard for the Orange, Dakota Davis enters his fourth year as the starter on the inside. He’s a big man who has been on campus since the 2017 season. It’s safe to say he understands the offense and gives Syracuse clean pockets and wide-open rushing lanes when he’s on his game. Davis was the first-ever Syracuse player to earn ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week when he did so back in 2019.

9) Jason Simmons, CB

The Orange weren’t quite known for their takeaways last season, and the only other defensive back to record an interception was Jason Simmons. Taking to Syracuse’s scheme quickly, Simmons picked things up in his first year with the program after transferring from New Mexico State. He’s got sound coverage ability from the box as he can cover any number of pass-catching options. He’ll once again be counted on to make waves as he’ll likely be heavily targeted given their strength at outside cornerback in 2022.

8) Matthew Bergeron, OT

Matthew Bergeron brings with him a 28-game starting streak into the 2022 season. Bergeron is a big man with fantastic reach in both pass protection and run blocking. He excels at right tackle when he’s allowed to move across the formation on run plays but also showcased an ability to find defenders to block at the second and third level on screens as well. He’s a talented blocker in both facets and clearly the best on the offensive line.

7) Garrett Shrader, QB

Though Garrett Shrader wasn’t quite considered the downfield passer that Tommy DeVito was early on in his Syracuse career, it could be said that Shrader gives this Syracuse offense a much better chance to find their top playmaker (Sean Tucker) with Shrader’s ability to run the ball. Shrader essentially acts as a second ball carrier who can make all the throws and opens up rushing lanes for Tucker. Yet, Shrader displayed an ability to throw the ball downfield last year and should be considered one of the top dual-threats in the conference.

6) Marlowe Wax, LB

Bringing down ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage is an art. Marlowe Wax was a master artist in such a feat, ripping his way through for nine tackles for loss in 2021 and 5.5 back in 2020. Wax plays off the edge brilliantly, rushing the passer with terrific skill and pushing ball carriers back inside all the same. He’s a sure tackler like the rest of the linebackers on the roster and should be a name to watch when he does rush the passer due to his experience bringing down the opposing quarterback.

5) Stefon Thompson, LB

A common theme among Syracuse linebackers is just how talented they are at the point of contact. Stefon Thompson, like his teammates, excels at bringing down ball carriers. Whether it was in coverage or on the ground, no one got by Thompson. He was a stalwart in run defense, stymying rushing lanes on the outside with ease. Thompson was also sound in coverage when he was asked to drop back. But his best attribute certainly was when he rushed the passer as he got home with six sacks and two more tackles for loss.

4) Darian Chestnut, CB

Leading the team with three interceptions last year, Darian Chestnut stepped up his game after opposing offenses stopped targeting Garrett Willams. After a stellar freshman season, Chestnut finished second in the ACC’s race for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He started all 12 games and made eight more pass breakups to boot. Chestnut is special with the ball in his hands, so you better believe offenses are going to have to find other areas to throw to in 2022.

3) Mikel Jones, LB

Instead of entering the 2022 NFL Draft, Mikel Jones returns to once again lead the Orange defense. Jones is quite literally one of the best tacklers in the nation and led the ACC’s regular season in both total and solo tackles. What separates Jones from the rest of the country’s linebackers, however, is the fact that he excels everywhere on the field. If he blitzes, he gets home with pressure. If he covers a tight end or running back, that pass catcher goes nowhere. And if he sees a rushing lane, it’s squeezed off and shut down.

2) Garrett Williams, CB

With high 2023 NFL Draft aspirations, Garrett Williams is back to showcase once again why most in the scouting community think so highly of him. He recorded 10 pass breakups a season ago after breaking up 12 in 2021. Both of those figures led the ACC in consecutive years as he’s a ball hawk who doesn’t allow much in his coverage. He plays with great speed and a terrific burst to the football, but his instincts and sticky cover ability are what jump out about Williams’ game.

1) Sean Tucker, RB

Sean “Track Speed” Tucker returns as arguably the conference’s best running back. In what could only be described as a historic start to his career, Tucker set the Syracuse single-season rushing record at 1,496 yards and already ranks 20th on the program’s all-time rushing list. Considering this is a historic program with names like Jim Brown, Joe Morris, Delone Carter, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little, Dee Brown, and many others ahead of him, Tucker’s place on this list speaks volumes to why he’s not only one of the best returning in the ACC but across the country.

Honorable mention players returning to Syracuse in 2022

  • Damien Alford, WR
  • Christopher Bleich, G
  • Carlos Vettorello, OT
  • Justin Barron, S
  • Ja’Had Carter, S

Andre Szmyt becomes third Syracuse football player named to a preseason award watch list (PS; Leiker)

With one final college football season ahead of him, Andre Szmyt has a chance to become a repeat winner at the Lou Groza Award as he was named to its preseason watch list Wednesday.

Szmyt won the award in 2018 following his redshirt freshman season with Syracuse football. He was the first Orange player to win the award, which is presented annually by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission to the nation’s top placekicker.

The Lou Groza Award is named for NFL Hall of Famer Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 18 seasons and won four championships with the Cleveland Browns. Groza helped establish the role of kicker on NFL rosters. In college, he played for Ohio State.

In the season he earned the award, Szmyt cleared 30 of 34 field goal attempts and set a career-high with a 54-yard field goal against rival Pittsburgh.

Only one other kicker has won the award twice: former Florida State kicker Sebastian Janikowski, who played 18 seasons in the NFL. Janikowski won the award in 1998 and 1999.

Michigan’s Jake Moody, the 2021 Groza recipient, is the only other previous winner named to the preseason watch list. There are also three other former finalists on the list: Ohio State’s Noah Ruggles, BYU’s Jacob Oldroyd and Alabama’s Will Reichard.

Sean Tucker the sole SU football player to make 2022 Preseason All-ACC team (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football had just one player named to the 2022 Preseason All-ACC team.

Running back Sean Tucker was the top vote-grabber at running back and had the third-most overall, earning 125 tallies and a spot on the team. He also earned 11 votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year, which went to N.C. State quarterback Devin Leary.

Clemson led the conference with six players named, followed by N.C. State with five.

The team was voted upon by the 164 media members who were credentialed for last week’s ACC Kickoff event.

Clemson sophomore Will Shipley was the other running back selected for the team with 112 votes.

Tucker was the top offensive vote-getter on the 2021 postseason All-ACC team, earning him a first team selection. He also amassed a number of All-America nods and was a semifinalist for two awards — the Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award, both of which he’s on the 2022 watchlists for. With 1,496 rushing yards, he led the ACC and finished with the sixth-most nationwide.

Bad News for Syracuse, Big Ten is Not Considering the Orange – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

The conference realignment murmurs have grown into flat out paranoia (“a mass exodus”) in many circles, as programs wonder what their future is. At stake, a spot with the “have’s” at the college football table, a place where dishes are passed around with $75M checks under them. Syracuse’s ACC revenue is significant, and many could argue is the reason for any and all advancements athletically on the Hill over the last decade. But it’s not nearly what the SEC and Big Ten could bring.

If the ACC can continue to survive, the Orange are in a fine place. There are schools geographically similar (Boston College, Pitt), and many that are in the same strata of the sports world. Duke and North Carolina are basketball first, like Syracuse. If run correctly, SU football should be able to compete with Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest, and Louisville most years.

But if college football ever becomes just a two-tower sport there’s massive concern. The SEC will never have any interest in Syracuse. And now there’s reason to believe the Big Ten will ignore the Orange as well. Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren did not sidestep the idea of further expansion, and actually confirmed the league’s future “may include” adding even more schools. But there are only a select few that could “add value.”

Big Ten football media days: What Jeff Brohm said (indystar.com; Horner)

Purdue football appears to be on the upswing. The Boilermakers finished 9-4 in 2021, including wins over teams ranked No. 2 (Iowa) and No. 3 (Michigan State) at the time. The season concluded with a thrilling overtime victory over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

Purdue opens the season Sept. 1 at Ross-Ade Stadium vs. Penn State. The Boilers' nonconference games are against Indiana State, Syracuse and Florida Atlantic, and they also host Iowa. The regular-season ends at Indiana for the Old Oaken Bucket game on Nov. 26.

Here's what coach Jeff Brohm had to say during Big Ten football media days. Please refresh for the latest.

Purdue defense improved in 2021

Brohm notes how offense and special teams can help the defense, which lost All-American pass rusher George Karlaftis.

Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell

"It's unfortunate that his coach didn't start him from Day 1 (in 2021)." Brohm has the utmost confidence in O'Connell.

Receivers room undergoes change

Purdue has lost David Bell, Rondale Moore and Milton Wright the past two years. Brohm is confident his current group can compete, noting T.J. Sheffield, Broc Thompson and transfer Tyrone Tracy.

Safety Jammie Robinson the only Florida State Seminole on Preseason All-ACC team (tallahassee.com; Weiler)

Once again, Florida State doesn't have much representation on this year's Preseason All-ACC team.

After no Seminoles were named to last year's preseason team, only one FSU player, redshirt junior safety Jammie Robinson, made the cut this season.

Of the 164 media members who voted for the team at ACC Kickoff, Robinson received 93 votes, the most by a defensive back and the third most by a defensive player behind Clemson defensive linemen Myles Murphy (120) and Bryan Bresee (116).

Robinson returns to FSU after he was a first-team All-ACC safety in 2021. He was tied for the conference lead with four interceptions and had a team-high 85 tackles, second most among ACC defensive backs.

A few other FSU players had cases to make the cut, most notable defensive tackles Fabien Lovett and Robert Cooper. However, Clemson and Pitt denied them, each landing two players on the preseason all-conference defensive line.

Were Cavaliers screwed by media in All-ACC preseason vote? (jerryratcliffe.com)

If Virginia’s football team needed any added motivation for this season, it came wrapped in a bow on Wednesday when the 2022 Preseason All-ACC Football Team was released by the conference office.

The Cavaliers, who were picked to finish fourth in the Coastal Division by ACC media in a release on Tuesday, were practically non-existent in the minds of voters when it came to the preseason team.

Virginia had one lone representative on the entire preseason squad. Keytaon Thompson, arguably the hardest player to stop on Virginia’s team last season, was the only Cavalier to make the ACC team, voted the best All-Purpose back in the league.

If you’re a Wahoo fan and you’re looking for any other bread crumbs, forget it. No Brennan Armstrong, no Dontayvion Wicks, no Nick Jackson. Nobody.

Hey, at least Virginia had one player compared to none for Virginia Tech. When was the last time the Hokies didn’t have a single player on the All-ACC preseason team?

In a league loaded with quarterback talent, we get it. NC State’s Devin Leary made the team with 56 votes, meaning that that about 75 other votes were cast for an array of other QBs in the league.

Voters tended to overlook last year’s stats when Leary was fifth in total yards per game among returning ACC QBs, and third in total TDs, behind both Armstrong and Wake’s Sam Hartman.

NC State quarterback Devin Leary picked as ACC Preseason Player of Year :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com)

NC State quarterback Devin Leary has been selected as the ACC Preseason Player of the Year.

Leary threw for 35 touchdowns and only had five interceptions in a breakout season in 2021, leading the Wolfpack to a 9-3 campaign with marquee wins against Clemson and rival North Carolina.

NCSU finished the season ranked 20th in the final AP poll after their scheduled Holiday Bowl appearance against UCLA was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

The 35 touchdown passes broke a school record previously set by Philip Rivers in 2003.

College football realignment: Big Ten reportedly considering 7 different schools for further expansion (saturdaydownsouth.com; Long)

The Big Ten has identified several schools that could be part of future expansion with Notre Dame, Miami and Florida State among the potential fits.

According to a story from Action Network, league commissioner Kevin Warren is looking at the aforementioned schools along with Pac-12 schools Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Cal.

Miami and Florida State are currently in the ACC. Notre Dame is an independent in football and in the ACC for other sports.

According to a report from CBS Sports, Notre Dame is looking for at least $75 million in annual media rights from NBC when the current contract expires in 2025

Warren reiterated his opening statements from Big Ten Media Days by saying the conference will only consider expansion if it’s the right situation and the right fit.

“We will not expand just to expand,” Warren said. “It will be strategic. It will add additional value to our conference, and it will provide a platform to even have our student-athletes be put on a larger platform so they can build their careers but also that they have an opportunity to grow and learn from an education and from an athletic standpoint.”

The Big Ten will be expanding in 2024 when USC and UCLA are expected to join.

Can ACC benefit from ND independence? (RX; HM)

Pretty sure the RSN contract runs until 2026-27...

Can ACC benefit from ND independence?

Obviously, the Fighting Irish would rather cling onto independence as long as they can. Could that fact itself play out to the ACC's advantage? Here are my thoughts...

What Notre Dame wants.

Sources: Notre Dame would stay independent if it gets $75M in next NBC deal

7.19.2022: Notre Dame would "remain independent" if it can earn at least $75M annually in "media rights revenue from current broadcast partner NBC," according to sources cited by Dennis Dodd of CBSSPORTS.com. Notre Dame's deal with the network is set to expire in 2025. For NBC to "feel comfortable raising Notre Dame's valuation to such a level," it is "seeking 'shoulder programming' (in this case, games played before and/or after Notre Dame's contests) from a Power Five conference to enhance its college football coverage." A source said that NBC's negotiations are "expected to extend across the next 2-3 weeks." The network has been the rightsholder for Notre Dame home football games since 1991. The current deal averages $15M per year, but Notre Dame is earning $22M annually due to the "backloaded nature of the contract." The Big 12 has "emerged as a strong option to fill NBC's shoulder programming needs," as the conference may be "one of the few leagues with inventory available as its media rights deal also expires in 2025" (CBSSPORTS.com, 7/18).

That's nice for the Fighting Irish, but how does any of that help the ACC, you ask? Actually, it could be a very good thing for the league. Let me suggest a couple of ways it might help...

How This Could Help the ACC.

1. By keeping Notre Dame independent, there's no reason for them to leave the ACC; quite the contrary, the Irish would be motivated to stick with its current deal as long as possible to ensure a non-football home and a handful of filler-type games for the middle of the season (oh, and a list of minor bowls in case they lose too many games). For the ACC, that means being able to continue counting on Notre Dame for tv ratings, ticket sales, bowl negotiations, and away game exposure on NBC.
It could also mean something else to the ACC - a reason for ESPN to reopen the tv contract. If Disney Corp. knows that Notre Dame is likely to join the Big Ten without a safe ACC home, would that fact alone be enough to move ESPN to get out the checkbook once again? I think it just might.
2. That "shoulder programming" clause is interesting, isn't it? Basically NBC is saying that, if they are going to invest that heavily in college football, they want more than one game each week. Now, they could accomplish that with a piece of the Big Ten contract, or they could scoop up some inexpensive Big XII or Pac-12 content, but is there any way NBC could get some ACC content? Well, as a matter or fact, there are two ways:

a) The RSN games. Best as I can tell, the RSN contract ends in 2023. Do those games revert back to the ACC, or does ESPN automatically get them? I assume the latter, but if there's wiggle room (or if ESPN doesn't need/want them), could they be sub-leased to NBC, much like they were to Fox Sports?
b) Pac-10 expansion teams. Suppose the ACC adds four teams from the Pac-10 but decides not to add all of that inventory to their ESPN tv contract... they could then sell the excess to NBC (it sounds like the Peacock is only looking for one or two games per week anyway).

Pac-12 vs Big XII TV Potential (RX; HM)

Pac-12 vs Big XII TV Potential

The question out West lately has been "who can poach whom?" between the Big XII and the Pac-12. To best answer that question, we first need to answer another: which of those two leagues has the highest TV potential post-realignment? With the Big XII losing Texas and Oklahoma, and with the Pac-12 losing USC and UCLA, there's no doubt both conferences will be taking a hit, but which one has the most power remaining?

Analysis:

The Mercury News did some analysis of games with tv ratings over 1.0. Both conferences enjoyed similar numbers in recent years, but one was more dependent on the departing teams than the other one...

Non-Conference: ACC vs SEC (RX; HM)

Non-Conference: ACC vs SEC

Enough about realignment and revenue - let's talk football! Specifically, non-conference scheduling...

How does the ACC compare to the SEC in non-conference strength of schedule? A few SEC fans has suggested that their teams play a tougher OOC slate, but is there any merit to that claim?
First, let's talk quantity. Hardly ever does an SEC team play two P5 opponents out of conference. In 2021, Georgia played both Clemson and Georgia Tech. No other SEC school played 2 P5 OOC teams.
By contrast, in the ACC:

  • Clemson played Georgia and South Carolina.
  • Florida State played Notre Dame and Florida.
  • Louisville played Ole Miss and Kentucky (and tossed in UCF for good measure).
  • Georgia Tech ended the season with Notre Dame and Georgia.
  • Miami took on both Alabama and Michigan State.
  • Virginia played Illinois and Notre Dame, and
  • Virginia Tech played West Virginia and Notre Dame.
  • Every other ACC team played at least one P5 OOC.*

Schumer: Build computer chip plants in Syracuse, not Shanghai (PS; $; Weiner)

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says he’ll step up his push for a computer chip plant in Syracuse’s suburbs after the Senate passed a bill Wednesday offering $52 billion in incentives for manufacturers to open new plants in the United States.

Schumer, D-N.Y., said he’ll use his clout as Senate majority leader to help lure a semiconductor chip fabricating plant to Central New York and convince federal officials to approve an incentive package.

“We need these chips fabs in Syracuse, not Shanghai,” Schumer told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard in an interview after Wednesday’s vote.

Schumer said he’s optimistic that at least one large manufacturer will bring thousands of jobs to the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay, a 1,250-acre property that Onondaga County has marketed to semiconductor chip makers.

“While there’s no guarantee, we’re in a really good position to land thousands of jobs in Central New York,” Schumer said in the interview. “It’s not hyperbole to say White Pine is one of the best sites in the country for semiconductor manufacturing.”

Schumer has talked with the chief executives of several chip makers to tout the White Pine site over the past two years.

The senator has said the undeveloped land off Route 31 in Clay is “one of only a few locations in the world” with access to the large amounts of power, water and sewage treatment capacity required for chip production.

When asked Wednesday, Schumer declined to say which executives or companies he has spoken with in recent weeks about White Pine.

But the senator said he plans to start calling some of the executives to remind them that he got the bill passed, breaking a months-long impasse over the legislation in Congress.
