Welcome to Airplane Crop Duster Day!

Crop dusters, agricultural aircraft used for the application of pesticides, are celebrated today with Airplane Crop Duster Day. (A similar aircraft is a top dresser, which drops fertilizer. Agricultural aircraft can also be used for hydroseeding.) The word "crop duster" can also refer to the person flying the aircraft. Crop dusting using insecticides started in the early 1920s in the United States. The first crop dusters were converted surplus biplanes from World War I. During the 1940s, after better insecticides and fungicides were developed, and after aerial topdressing came about, fixed-wing aircraft made specifically for aerial application became the norm. Controversy has swirled around crop dusters since the 1960s when environmental concern about pesticide drift arose. Nowadays, there are crop-dusting restrictions in many locations, and
the practice is banned altogether in others.

4 non-quarterback takeaways heading into Syracuse football preseason camp: 'The key is the offensive line' (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers as well as players Sean Tucker and Garrett Williams addressed the media on Tuesday ahead of the start of fall camp. The Orange will take the field for the first time ahead of Year 7 of the Babers era on Wednesday morning.

Much of the conversation focused on SU's quarterback room, which will be without redshirt freshman Justin Lamson for the season due to a knee injury. His shelving leaves returning starter Garrett Shrader as the clear-cut No. 1 signal-caller with a trio of unproven backups jockeying for opportunities behind him.

But Babers and Co. hit on a handful of other prominent topics. Let's break them down.

THE STATE OF THE OL

The most important position group since Babers took over in Central New York has been the front five. Injuries have decimated the unit most seasons, leaving an offense built to go fast sputtering in November. The lone exception: 2018, when SU kept its six contributing linemen healthy all season long and finished 10-3 with a Camping World Bowl win over West Virginia.
"Regardless of all of the things that we’ve been able to do and not been able to do, we haven’t had a stable offensive line since you know when," Babers said. "I’m not going to bring it up. And it’s frustrating for me. It’s God’s will. It’s not like somebody’s doing something wrong, but if this is the season where it all works out and we can keep our top seven guys there, let’s go. I didn’t say, ‘five.’ If I can just play with seven… I’ll be really happy with what’s going to happen."

Orange Watch: 2022 Syracuse football preseason practice begins - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: There’s nowhere to go but up for Syracuse football after again being the preseason media pick to finish last in the stacked seven team ACC Atlantic Division, following three consecutive losing seasons. The mood is upbeat as preseason workouts get underway Wednesday with new coaches directing a new offensive philosophy (read – passing game) led by quarterback Garett Shrader, a strong defense and likely improved special teams’ units, and of course, a decorated Sean Tucker. The flip side is a tough schedule, questions about establishing the backup QB to Shrader and offensive line cohesiveness, and the timeline for the new faces along the defensive line to become disruptive.

The build up to Dino Babers critical seventh season begins this week with the first of 21 August practices that will take the team up to Louisville game week, and the tough home opener against the Cardinals September 3 (8:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network), the first game played in the building under the name JMA Wireless Dome.

Fine-tuning the schemes, practicing situational football, game and clock management, developing depth, avoiding injuries, and building camaraderie between players and coaches highlight the check list over the next month.

“Where the excitement goes (for me) is looking to see how they can grow the next 30 days before the first game, and then how we can bring it all together as a team. That’s exciting,” Babers said Tuesday at his pre-camp press conference.

“To put the finishing touches on the throwing game. To see where this defense is going to end up,” Babers added. “We keep our offensive line together; we’ll line up and play.”

SU football’s QB room: Shrader is No. 1, but who’s behind him with Lamson out? (PS; $; Leiker)

Quarterback competitions are one of the inevitable storylines for college football programs across the country each year when August rolls around.

But while there is a bit of a QB competition happening for Syracuse football, it’s not for the starting job.

The title of Syracuse starting quarterback firmly belongs to Garrett Shrader.

The second-string spot, though? It’s up for grabs.

“We’re not divvying up anything,” SU coach Dino Babers said during a Tuesday press conference to kick off fall camp, which starts Wednesday. “Shrader’s getting the majority of the reps, and everybody else needs to fight to find a way to get ‘em. All those guys are battling for those reps, to get the No. 2 reps. And when you get the No. 2 reps, then you have an opportunity to make a move, so to speak, or get yourself in position to play.”

Kevon Darton Earns Scholarship (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has added to its scholarship count on the 2022 roster. On Tuesday, the Orange announced that defensive lineman Kevon Darton has earned a scholarship and is no longer a walk-on. Darton is a 5-11, 266 pound defensive lineman out of Worcester Academy in Massachusetts.

In the video below that announced the scholarship, the voice that sounds like head coach Dino Babers says it has to be earned not given. Then asks "what?" multiple times. When Darton replies "nothing" Babers states, "alright. You've earned your scholarship" right before he is mobbed by his teammates in celebratory fashion.

Despite being a redshirt sophomore, this is actually Darton's fourth year with the program. He joined the Orange in 2019 but redshirted that season as a true freshman. In 2020, he appeared in six games a redshirt freshman reserve lineman and recorded five tackles. Last season, Darton played in all 12 games on the defensive line and on special teams. He made nine total tackles in 2021.

Defensive line is one of the biggest question marks on the roster with the season about a month away. Darton was on the two deep during spring ball and has made strides in his development during his time with the program.

Syracuse football schedule: Non-conference openings this decade (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Hi! I’m the (a?) guy that used to run this place. You may know me from hits such as “Which teams are available for SU to schedule in 2024?” and “Creating SU football’s ideal schedules through 2035.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I’m here to talk about Syracuse Orange football non-conference scheduling. For once, there’s limited urgency here aside from the two openings in 2024. But would also note that all of this could wind up being for naught given the conference realignment nonsense swirling around the sport.

So keep all of that in mind as I tour us through the rest of this decade schedule-wise (aside from 2022, since obviously that schedule’s set).

2023 (Done, miraculously)

  • Army
  • Western Michigan
  • at Purdue
  • Colgate
2024 (Two openings)
  • at Army
  • Ohio
The 2024 openings have been covered off on many times before in this space, and at this point, everyone’s accepted the fact that Syracuse is just going to walk right past that mandatory Power Five opponent thing since there aren’t many P5 opponents left to add. The other spot is an FCS opponent. We’ll get to those very briefly below, since they’re easier to schedule on short notice and SU might even have that team locked in already and it’s just unannounced yet.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #10 QB, Justin Lamson (TNIAAM; Wall)

Name:
Justin Lamson
Position: Quarterback
Year: Redshirt Freshman
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 209 lbs
Hometown: El Dorado Hills, Ca.
High School: Oak Ridge

2021 stats: Lamson didn’t play for the Syracuse Orange last season but he emerged as the #2 during Spring practice. He looked good taking reps with the starting offense in the spring game but in true Syracuse football fashion, he suffered a lower body injury later in spring ball.

2022 projections: The injury seems to indicate that Lamson will be once again sitting out but we don’t have any official word as of yet. If he’s not out for the season then we could see him competing for that #2 spot as the season progresses. During the spring game, Lamson showed promise that he can be the dual-threat quarterback that Syracuse has been searching for.

How’d he get here?: Chose the Orange over Louisville, San Jose State, and Wyoming.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars all around and a consensus top-100 player in California.

Money quote: Lamson was pleased to be Syracuse’s main quarterback target during his recruitment.

Top 5 Returning ACC Tight Ends | ACC Football 2022

With many of the top tight ends from 2021 having moved on, 2022 will be a year where several returning tight ends will be given a chance to make a name for themselves. Louisville's Marshon Ford is the leading returning tight end receiver in the ACC, and is coming off a year where his 550 receiving yards led Louisville. Miami's Will Mallory and NC State's Trent Pennix both came on late in 2021 with the overwhelming majority of their yards coming in their team's final six games. Moving into the top tight end spots on their teams, Boston College's Joey Luchetti and Pitt's Gavin Bartholomew should see more production on the field with increased workloads. Take a look at who are the top five returning tight ends in the ACC right here!

From names like Torry Holt and Calvin Johnson to Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins, the ACC is known for producing top-notch wideouts in the NFL. That should be no different this season as the conference is returning some serious playmakers in 2022. Wake Forest's A.T. Perry is as reliable as they come, and Virginia has a slew of formidable threats that include Dontayvion Wicks & Keytaon Thompson. Meanwhile, Boston College's Zay Flowers and UNC's Josh Downs are two more standouts in a conference with a large group of pass-catchers who have proven that they can score whenever they get their hands on the ball. Check out our list for the top 5 returning wide receivers in the ACC right here.

Is it Clemson or bust for ACC College Football Playoff chances? (on3.com; Gillenwater)

Since the College Football Playoff’s inception, the ACC has made the field seven times. All but one of those selections, though, went to the Clemson Tigers. With Dabo Swinney’s program being the ACC’s perennial candidate, some wonder what it would take to get another team in not from Death Valley. ESPN’s Greg McElroy says that the conference is closer to achieving that goal than we think.

McElroy discussed the ACC’s potential in the CFP field during an episode of ‘Always College Football‘. He believes the best four teams get in and, because of some blunders, other ACC programs have removed themselves from consideration in years past.

“A lot of people have said Clemson always gets the benefit…Ultimately, we’ve seen teams ala North Carolina in 2015 that was an onside kick away from beating Clemson and punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff. A couple of years back when Miami was making a run, they were sitting at No. 2 in the country (and) played poorly the last few games of the year,” said McElroy. “I’m not one that says the playoff rewards brands. I think they reward the four best teams and regardless of what those four best teams history is, they will get in.”

Virginia Tech football: Hokies begin fall camp (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

Football is finally here. No, not spring football, real football as the Virginia Tech Hokies opened fall camp on Tuesday.

It’s a new era of Virginia Tech football with head coach Brent Pry entering his first season as head coach. While the expectations are low outside the program, things are much different within the program. The players are excited, the coaches are excited and there is optimism the 2022 Hokies will be much better than many believe.

One of the reasons fans are excited about the Hokies this summer is everything is new. We don’t know what we will see on offense. What type of offense will Tyler Bowen run? Will it include a downfield passing game? Will Bowen, who coached tight ends in the NFL, involve the tight ends more in the offense than the previous regime?

However, not to dwell too much on the previous six seasons, but Pry has everyone excited. He’s a refreshing change. No one knows how successful he will be in Blacksburg, but he brings hope and an understanding of the program.

We will keep you posted with updates from fall camp this month and when you get the chance read our previews on quarterbacks and running backs. Over the next two weeks, we will continue to roll out our positional previews.

2021 ACC football season preview: Predicted order of finish, best players, breakout stars (fansided.com; Wolkenbrod)

Clemson lost a significant amount of talent to the NFL, but will that actually matter towards their placement in the 2021 ACC standings?

ACC football has long been dominated by Clemson, a perennial powerhouse of the college gridiron. Others have tried, including a few Louisville teams in the 2010s, but under head coach Dabo Swinney, the Tigers have been the team to beat.

2021 technically represents a transitional period for the 2019 college football champions, losing top players to the NFL. Theoretically, this creates an opening for the other ACC teams, but the Tigers are still loaded and the other schools are playing catchup. Does anyone pose a real threat?

The ACC has 13 other teams playing through this season. How will they fare in the quest to make this division intriguing? Let’s take a look:

ACC Atlantic predicted order of finish

7. Syracuse

A 1-10 disaster in 2020 has the Orange sunken at the bottom of the ACC ship. There may be nowhere to go but up, but improvement is as little as one win. Granted, this isn’t a deep conference, but even the teams in the middle of the conference are a tier or two above.

6. Louisville

Louisville hasn’t found the magic since Lamar Jackson’s tenure, and 2021 will be no different. Quarterback Malik Cunningham regressed significantly last season. More of that will bring the Cardinals down to the bottom of the ACC Atlantic, especially with a few nonconference challenges that will test their overall record.

5. Florida State

Florida State is far from its National Championship years, and it very well could have a third head coach since Jimbo Fisher’s departure after the 2017 season. Expectations are forever enormous in Tallahassee, so Mike Norvell will feel the pressure after a middling first go-around. He probably needs at least 3-4 seasons to push the program retooling, but landing fifth in the conference may not buy his time.

4. Boston College

Boston College has a chance to surprise again in 2021. Quarterback Phil Jurkovec was effective, and the team will return all five starters on the offensive line, so the foundation is there for a steady group. The defense must improve, though, to push the Eagles higher up the table.

2022 CFB Superlatives (RX; HM)

2022 CFB Superlatives

College Football season begins in less than a month! Here are some "2022 college football schedule superlatives", according to ESPN (just the ACC-related ones; click the link to read them all)...

Easiest overall Power 5 schedule

It's only fair that a couple of first-year coaches draw the easiest schedules. Mike Elko takes over a Duke program that finished 3-9 a year ago and inherits a schedule that includes just two top-25 opponents. But the nod here goes to Virginia, which in Tony Elliott's first season will face just one preseason top-25 foe, and that's No. 15 Pittsburgh at home Nov. 12. The Cavaliers also avoid the ACC's two highest-ranked teams in the preseason (Clemson and NC State) and have a cushy nonconference schedule that features just one road game (at Illinois). Louisville, Miami and North Carolina all have to come to Charlottesville.

Toughest Power 5 nonconference schedule

Brutal nonconference schedules are never ideal for a coach who is on the so-called hot seat, but that's exactly what Georgia Tech's Geoff Collins faces in 2022. The Yellow Jackets, coming off three consecutive three-win seasons under Collins, get No. 21 Ole Miss at home the third week of the season, then turn around and play at UCF the following week. The "fun" part is the annual regular-season finale against No. 3 Georgia, which happens to be in Athens this year.

Toughest Open to the season

See the above section on the toughest Power 5 nonconference schedule, and not much of an explanation is needed. Georgia Tech opens the season on Monday, Sept. 5 against No. 13 Clemson. Sure, the game is in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but that place will be splattered in orange. After a short week to get ready for Western Carolina at home, the Yellow Jackets move on to No. 21 Ole Miss at home and Group of 5 power UCF on the road to close out September. They remain on the road as the calendar flips to October to face No. 15 Pittsburgh.

Opponents to the proposed aquarium voice their concerns Tuesday at an Onondaga County Legislature meeting. Lawmakers voted to approve building an $85 million aquarium. Aug. 2, 2022. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

Onondaga County lawmakers approve $85 million aquarium (PS; Knauss)

Onondaga County legislators today voted 9-8 to approve paying $85 million to build a 600,000-gallon aquarium at the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

The vote is a victory for County Executive Ryan McMahon, who has pushed for the aquarium for the past 10 months, arguing that it will increase tourism and kick-start development at the Inner Harbor.

Legislators cast their votes after nearly two hours of emotional comments and debate. At least eight community members who opposed the project lambasted lawmakers before the vote, accusing them of supporting a costly project that ignores the needs of poor local residents. One resident spoke in favor of the project, saying it would increase tourism.

Money for the project will come from budget surpluses the county accrued over the past two years through belt-tightening during the pandemic and higher-than-expected federal aid and sales tax revenues. Opponents of the aquarium – there were many – argued that the money should be spent on initiatives to reduce poverty.

Many legislators said the majority of constituents they spoke with about the aquarium urged them to vote no.

Citing a feasibility study prepared last year, McMahon estimated the aquarium will draw close to 500,000 visitors a year and generate $50 million in economic activity annually. It will generate about $796,000 a year in new sales and hotel taxes for the county, the study said. McMahon said that income would help the county sustain its programs, including those serving the poor.

Learned to fly and got my pilots license in a yellow J3 Cub, (Ozones film), while in prep school. My instructor was a WWII carrier based pilot with 5000 hours. He used to fly the Wildcat and F4U Corsair. I went on to fly a Piper Tri Pacer, Cessna 172 and Cessna Skyhawk - then it got too expensive to fly.

Too bad there's so much background noise people/players talking - you miss some of the reporters questions and what players the reporters are asking questions about - maybe outside with wind noise you can't do anything about it.
