ACC Football Road Trip Airs Wednesday from Syracuse - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)
ACC Road Show is making their trip to Syracuse on Wednesday, providing exclusive access to the Orange as they prepare for the 2022 season.
ACC Network personalities Wes Durham, Jordan Cornette and Eddie Royal will be on site, as the show tapes live during Wednesday's practice. The show will air on ACC Network at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
There are several inside looks into the program planned, but here are a few of the highlights:
- Head Coach Dino Babers will be live on set to open the practice.
- At various points during practice, Sean Tucker, Mikel Jones and Garrett Shrader will stop over to the ACC Network set.
- Eddie Royal will have an on-field demonstration with the stellar cornerback duo of Garrett Williams and Duce Chestnut to talk coverage.
- Coach Babers will be miced up for a portion of the show.
- Wes Durham got a tour of the John A. Lally Athletics Complex construction site from Associate AD Michael Paulus to give fans a look at the future infrastructure planned for Orange student-athletes.
The show will air Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Observations from Day 6 of Syracuse football camp: 1st open team period, injury replacements, position battles (247sports; $; Bailey)
Syracuse football's sixth day of preseason camp was a busy one. During the time media were allowed to watch the session, key safety Ja'Had Carter suffered an upper-body injury that led him to be sent to a hospital on a stretcher -- a precaution, according to Dino Babers -- the offense flashed a new front five grouping during goal line, and SU ran its first open team period of the fall.
Here are a series of observations and takeaways from the day:
CARTER'S INJURY MEANS CLARK GETS EXTRA REPS
While the nature and severity of Carter's injury are currently unclear -- and likely require additional testing -- in the short term, his absence means Rutgers transfer Alijah Clark will be getting more reps at safety. Carter opened the goal-line period...
Babers: ‘Defense definitely won’ SU football’s first full-pad practice (PS; $; Leiker)
Syracuse football’s defense picked off Garrett Shrader twice during a short period of 11-on-11 work at Tuesday’s practice.
The first interception came when sophomore cornerback Duce Chestnut snatched the ball on an approximately 30-yard throw down the left sideline. The second was grabbed by redshirt freshman defensive back Bralyn Oliver on a similar play about 50 yards down the same side of the field.
Both throws were some of the longest attempted during the open period of practice. So far the focus has seemed to be on shorter and mid-length routes, though a number of longer throws were heaved by some of the backup QBs during an earlier 1-on-1 drill.
Defensive coordinator Tony White’s squad played well that part of practice, too. All around, the defense had a strong showing at Syracuse’s first fully padded practice of the fall, highlighted by grabs like Chestnut’s and Oliver’s.
“The defense definitely won the day today,” coach Dino Babers said. “They rallied and they really bounced back from the first part of practice. They really dominated the second, the third and the fourth part of practice.”

Where are the four stars? A look at football recruiting for Syracuse, BC and Pittsburgh (TNIAAM; Wall)
Recruiting is a topic that we discuss frequently. Syracuse Orange fans feel as though Dino Babers’ recruiting does not measure up to where it needs to be and while that certainly is correct in some ways, there’s also history and other factors working against Syracuse. With a recent story on college football in the Northeast and a prompt from commenters it does make sense to compare Syracuse with ACC peers Boston College and Pittsburgh.
We decided to go back to recruits signed since 2000 using 247 composite ratings and here’s the totals of four-and five-stars for the three schools. To try and give a current snapshot we broke down how many of those four-stars and higher were signed after Syracuse and Pitt joined the ACC.

Former Syracuse LB predicts bowl game for in 2022 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)
Former Syracuse linebacker Jake Flaherty is predicting at least six wins for SU in 2022, he said on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv.
Flaherty, who played at Syracuse from 2005-08, was captain his senior year and appeared in 47 games throughout his career, starting 21 of them. He points to the experience at linebacker as one of the biggest reasons why the Orange will finish at .500 or better this year.
The Orange has one of the top linebacking cores in the ACC, featuring All-ACC linebacker Mikel Jones, Stefon Thompson and Marlowe Wax.
“They’re all carbon copies of each other,” Flaherty said. “They’re stout guys that can really run and are super explosive. It’s clear they can make plays in the open field, but they can rush the quarterback.”
And while SU also returns an experienced secondary, the main question revolves around the defensive line. Syracuse lost three starters from last year’s team.
“It’s going to be really critical to see how quickly they can mature,” Flaherty said. “By October, November, I think you see some great things from them.”
On the other side of the ball, Flaherty expressed excitement about new offensive coordinator Robert Anae, and pointed to key returning players at the skill positions as other reasons for SU’s return to the postseason in 2022.
“With Garrett (Shrader) having some experience under his belt, he’s going to be coming in really confident,” Flaherty said. “I think he’s going to surprise some people. The defense is going to be on point. We’ve got some good people in the secondary and maturity in the linebacking position. And oh, by the way we have one of the best running backs in the country (Sean Tucker).”

Syracuse Football: 8 foes are ranked or receiving votes in pre-season poll (itlh; Adler)
As we’ve documented a couple of times lately, if Syracuse football wants to reach a bowl game in 2022, it will have to navigate a potentially brutal upcoming schedule this fall.
Phil Steele, for one, recently projected that the Orange’s 2022 docket is No. 12 nationally as it pertains to the most-challenging schedules across the country.
On Monday, the pre-season top-25 Coaches poll was released, and I’m counting eight squads on the ‘Cuse 2022 calendar that are either ranked or receiving votes at this juncture.
That leaves four Syracuse football foes that aren’t nationally ranked or receiving votes ahead of the 2022 stanza, and they are UConn, Virginia, Wagner and Boston College.
Let’s see where Syracuse football opponents are placed in the pre-season Coaches poll.

Former Football Player David Tate Inspires Fellow Alumni With $1M Gift Commitment (syr.edu; Staff)
One of David Tate’s first memories of Syracuse football is what has endeared the team to him the most. Entering into the program as a freshman in 1972, Tate says coach Ben Schwartzwalder’s first direction to the newcomers wasn’t on how they played, but rather how they looked.
“During a time when everyone wore long hair, [Schwartzwalder] decided to cut all our hair off on the first day,” Tate says. “We were buzzed to the scalp. We all looked odd, but we all looked the same.”
The uniformity that Schwartzwalder imposed upon the freshman class instilled the importance of unity within Tate, both on and off the field. Tate, who played for the Orange from 1972 to 1976, now aims to grow that unity within the Syracuse football alumni and make its brotherhood stronger than ever.
Tate, the founder and CEO of Healthgram, has pledged $1 million to the first phase of transforming Manley Field House into the John A. Lally Athletics Complex, a state-of-the-art academic and athletics village that will benefit all student-athletes.
“David’s generosity and commitment to our football program is inspiring and motivating,” says Athletics Director John Wildhack. “It also reflects his deep commitment to unite our football alumni from all eras to support Head Football Coach Dino Babers and our current program.”
The project’s first phase began in April and includes a new and expanded entryway into the John A. Lally Athletics Complex. Additional renovations of phase 1 include an expanded Football Operations Center and a renovated Olympics Sports Center, which will feature new sport medicine, training, cafeteria and lounge spaces. These renovations are contingent on philanthropy being secured.
Tate’s donation is his first to Syracuse University, and he believes it is important to give back after all the University has given him.

Syracuse football: DB Ja’Had Cater sent to hospital with upper body injury, has feeling in limbs (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
Syracuse Orange defensive back Ja’Had Carter was sent to the hospital as a precaution today. Dino Babers confirmed that the sophomore suffered an upper body injury during practice but was speaking with him and he has feelings in all of his limbs and extremities.
Stephen Bailey reported that the injury occurred during the open practice portion to media in a goal-line drill, which isn’t allowed to be filmed by those in attendance. He was taken out on a stretcher.

Rob Konrad, the last member of the Syracuse Orange football program to don the university's legendary jersey number 44, enjoyed a standout career that positioned the fullback to be selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Konrad hit the ground running, catching a touchdown pass from Dan Marino in his very first professional game, and went on to play six seasons in Miami, starting 57 games, and blocking for Ricky Williams during his dominant 2002-03 run. Since hanging up his cleats, Konrad has enjoyed a successful career in the finance industry, however a 2015 boating mishap left him fighting for his life in the Atlantic Ocean in an extraordinary act of survival that he has not spoken about publicly in years.
Joining OJ and Seth in The Fish Tank, Rob discusses his hometown of Danvers, Massachusetts and its connection to the Salem witch trials (3:56) and fondly reflects upon his relationship with Syracuse's storied 44, as well as his bond with the legends, like Jim Brown, who wore the number before him (6:14). FOOTBALL: What You Need to Know About Day 7 - University of Louisville Athletics (gocards.com)
The University of Louisville football team returned to the practice field for Day 7 of fall camp. Here are some developments from Tuesday's practice.
- With the offense trailing by two points in the last 31 seconds, the Cardinals drove the football into field goal range where James Turner ended the game with a field goal in the final seconds.
- Head coach Scott Satterfield is putting his team through various late game scenarios to attempt to be better at winning the close games.
- Running back Tiyon Evans put on a show this morning with a number of long runs. He's shown the ability to burst through holes and is one of the toughest runners inside the hole. He was third on the Tennessee team in rushing last season with 525 yards and six scores.
- The Cardinals are better in the secondary with the additions of Jarvis Brownlee, Nicario Harper and Quincy Riley. Brownlee has made a number of athletic plays by knocking down a pair of slant passes in the closing periods.
- The offensive line had a good day Tuesday opening holes for the running game and giving time to Malik Cunningham.
- The Cardinals are much more improved at the wide receiver position with the addition of Dee Wiggins and Tyler Hudson.
- Offensive line coach Nic Cardwell stated after practice that he has seven or eight guys they can go out there and execute at a high level. He stated that the thing that makes his group good is the older guys teaching the young guys, even though they're just as talented and they know that they're out there sharing time. The older guys are pulling the younger players aside.
- Senior offensive lineman Adonis Boone feels like he's improved on what he wanted to get better at, like reading defenses better and spent more time working on his flexibility.
- The ACC Network will be at practice on Friday with their show airing at 7 p.m. on the ACC Network.

We shouldn't see a change during the 2022 season, as some elite talent will be displayed on football fields around the ACC. Wake Forest's Rondell Bothroyd is as disruptive as they come, and Clemson has a slew of formidable threats that include Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy. As usual, the Pitt Panthers will be causing headaches for opposing offensive coordinators as Calijah Kancey and Habakkuk Baldonado look to build on their impressive 2021 campaigns. With names like Dre Bly, Antrel Rolle, and Jalen Ramsey football history is littered with great defensive backs who came from ACC schools. Looks like that tradition is sure to continue as the conference once again can boast a slew of dangerous defenders lurking in secondaries as we head into the 2022 college football season.
Garrett Williams turned lots of heads in Syracuse last season and with his running mate Duce Chestnut beside him, the Orange secondary is stout. Clemson's Andrew Mukuba looks to build on his 2021 Rookie of the Year campaign, while Kei'Trel Clark, Jammie Robinson and Josh Deberry all are poised to make noise and wreak havoc on opposing teams' passing games.

B1G to NBC good for ND, too?
Everything that happens has side effects.
Yes, NBC ramping up its college football definitely helps Notre Dame in a couple of ways:
1. It allows NBC to pay Notre Dame's asking price.
Sports Business Journal reported awhile back that Notre Dame would remain independent if it can earn at least $75M annually in media rights revenue [see "Can ACC benefit from ND independence?"]. Why does it matter that NBC has something to show besides Irish football? Because they specifically mentioned that they needed "shoulder programming" in order to justify paying Notre Dame that much. Consider it done.Oh, just in case CBS should win the Irish Football TV contract, they also have the necessary "shoulder programming".
2. It opens up more TV time slots for the Irish - and everybody.
The worst-case scenario was probably ABC/ESPN having media rights for all major college sports. Having them split 50/50 between Disney and Fox would only be a little better. However, now we'll have a situation where CBS and NBC rejoin ABC and Fox in the college sports game - virtually doubling the potential television time slots. This greatly increases the number of national broadcasts - something very valuable to the Irish....

Renfrow's mother and brother attended Clemson and the dream of following in their footsteps was deeply sought after. With offers from Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Wofford, he declined the only football and baseball offers he had, which were of FCS affiliation, and walked on at Clemson. His 5-foot-10 and 155-pound frame deterred other suitors, but by redshirting his freshman season, he gained 26 pounds and earned the scholarship he so desired....

Historic Auburn restaurant, closed since Covid began, to reopen under new owner (PS; $; Cazentre)
Joe Smith admits that he was once a regular patron at Curley’s, the landmark restaurant and bar just north of downtown Auburn.
“Back in the day, pretty much every Friday night I’d be there,” Smith said. “It was pretty much a big reunion every time we walked in.”
Now Smith will get to host his own reunions: He is the new owner of Curley’s, which opened in 1933 but has been closed since the start of the Covid pandemic in March 2020.
Smith, who lives in the town of Throop and owns Lakeside Construction in Auburn, hopes to have Curley’s back open by the end of the year.
Curley’s, at 96 State St. overlooking the Owasco Outlet, was founded by Angelo “Curley” Dello Stritto in the same year that Prohibition ended. The Dello Stritto family operated it until Covid hit, and put it up for sale late last year.
Smith’s goal is to restore the exterior of the building back to something closer to its original look, while keeping the interior layout essentially the same as its was. His company does mostly residential construction, but he said he has crews now working on the project.
Much of the work will be on the exterior, where Smith plans to install red bricks kilned locally 100 or so years ago and which were salvaged from a now demolished Elbridge church. Smith also plans to restore the large deck overlooking the river. Smith is also reopening the Red Suspender Room in the basement.
Smith said neither he or his wife, Jessica, have experience in the restaurant business, but he does plain to offer a “tavern” menu, with a few of the old Curley’s favorites, like the “JoJo fries,” breaded chicken wings and pizzas.
He bought those recipes from the Dello Stritto family, along with the property, building, and restaurant furnishings. He is currently seeking experienced restaurant staff, and is also planning to bring back some of the former Curley’s employees.
