Welcome to National Roller Coaster Day!

National Roller Coaster Day is dedicated to roller coasters, and has been celebrated since 1986. In the 17th century, "Russian Mountains", which were constructed hills of ice used as slides, were near what would become St. Petersburg. These were precursors to modern day roller coasters, which were first patented and built in the late 19th century in America. John G. Taylor was issued a patent in 1872 for a roller coaster in Rhode Island, and LaMarcus Adna Thompson built one in Coney Island in 1884. Early roller coasters were wooden, but now steel is mainly used in making them.

How to Observe National Roller Coaster Day

National Roller Coaster Day should be celebrated by riding on a roller coaster. Here are some amusement parks across the United States that have roller coasters. If you don't have the courage to ride in a roller coaster, make a trip to the National Roller Coaster Museum.

What Needs to Break Right for SU to Make a Bowl? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

Syracuse’s football opener is now less than a month away, and that means we’re now in the nitty-gritty of schedule gymnastics. How can SU sneak its way into a bowl? It’s certainly possible, but hinges on a few key factors. Last year, a similar article we wrote nailed some predictions for the ‘21 squad.

Ready or not, the Orange are about to set off on their course. If a bowl awaits at the end, it’ll mean the team ticked off at least some of the following conditions.

GARRETT SHRADER HAS TO THROW FOR AT LEAST 2,000 YARDS

Last year, Syracuse entered the season with questions at quarterback. Tommy DeVito needed to figure things out in ‘21, and he’s now grabbing hold of Illinois’ QB1 job because he couldn’t. Instead, Mississippi State transfer Garrett Shrader came from nowhere to jumpstart a rigor mortis-riddled Orange attack.

Shrader’s 23 total touchdowns on the season belie a mediocre first season throwing the football. Shrader wasn’t efficient (52.6% completion rate) nor aggressive (only 6.2 yards per attempt), and the Orange were eventually mauled late in the season by better teams who exploited those weaknesses.

Shrader is firmly cemented as SU’s starting signal-caller this year, but an increase in production is necessary to give the Orange O another dimension. Nine different ACC quarterbacks hit the 2,000 yard mark last season, and that short list includes names like Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei in a down year and Duke’s Gunnar Holmberg, who toiled for a 3-9 squad. A Top 10 in-conference yardage season at minimum from Shrader would suggest that he’s taken another step, used offensive coordinator Robert Anae’s system to great effect, and brought out the talent of the receiving room. Consider the passing game the 2022 SU squad’s largest X-factor.

Syracuse football ACC road trip recap (TNIAAM; Wall)

One of the best things the ACC Network does is a road trip to pre-season camp for all the conference schools. Last week the crew of Jordan Cornette, Eddie Royal and Wes Durham were in Syracuse to shine the spotlight on the Syracuse Orange. If you missed it, you can check out the replay online or keep reading.

First up on the sideline set was Dino Babers who gave a lot of generic coach speak about camp setting the tone for the season but the best soundbite was Dino hitting Jordan Cornette with a dig about Melo going for 30 on him. As Cornette cringed, somewhere Danny Miller gave a sigh of relief that he’s not calling football games these days.

Some clips on the importance of 44 at Syracuse featuring alums Beth Mowins and Sean McDonough. It leads into discussion on Sean Tucker.... who wasn’t given the number.

Virginia Football Opponent Preview: Syracuse Orange (streakingthelawn.com; Siegel)

To open conference play, new head coach Tony Elliott and the Virginia Cavaliers will take a trip up north to Syracuse. Although the ‘Hoos have not played the Orange since 2015, an element of familiarity will be there. The Syracuse staff recently brought in two assistant coaches who previously served under Bronco Mendenhall — offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck.

Syracuse looks to build off of the moderate success they’ve previously experienced under head coach Dino Babers. Recently the Orange have not been able to get the gears going but they did show some encouraging signs in 2021.

2021 Recap Record: 5-7

Postseason: none

At first glance, a 5-7 overall record does not appear to be daunting. However, the 2020 season saw Syracuse going an abysmal 1-10, while being outscored by opponents by double digits in eight of their losses.

Last year, the Orange showed a lot more, winning home games against Liberty and Boston College, while also taking down the Hokies in Blacksburg. Perhaps more importantly, they were not heavily outplayed in most of their losses. Syracuse started 0-3 in the ACC, but only lost their games to Florida State, Wake Forest, and Clemson by a combined nine points. The issue was no longer a major talent discrepancy but rather the inability to close out wins.

2022 Preview

Key Returners: RB Sean Tucker, CB Garrett Williams, CB Darian “Duce” Chestnut

Key Departures: WR Taj Harris, DL Cody Roscoe

Key New Faces: RB Juwan Price, CB Alijah Clark, OC Robert Anae, QB Coach Jason Beck

The one player that many fans know nationally on the Syracuse roster is running back Sean Tucker. After showing sparks in his freshman season, Tucker exploded onto the scene last season, accounting for 1,515 rushing yards, 249 receiving yards, and 66 missed tackles forced (6th among the power five).

This offseason, Babers added another productive piece to the running back room in New Mexico State transfer, Juwan Price. Especially with quarterback Garrett Shrader being a rushing threat himself, keeping the ball on the ground should be the pinnacle of Syracuse’s offense. It will be up to Anae to adjust his scheme to the new personnel.

On the other side of the ball, Tony White returns for a third season as the Orange’s defensive coordinator. Last year his group was improved but inconsistent. Now, all the pieces are there for this group to be a force in the ACC.

White loves to use deceptive blitzes with his linebackers to confuse opposing quarterbacks. This was put on display in 2021 against Liberty, where the Orange sacked star signal caller Malik Willis six times in a 24-21 victory.

Of course, blitz heavy teams require rangy, athletic defensive backs. Look no further than two of the most highly regarded corner backs in the ACC, in Garrett Williams and Duce Chestnut.

They did struggling particularly with yards after the catch and on the defensive line, the departure of Cody Roscoe, who was second in the ACC with 12 sacks, will loom large.

2022 College Football Preview – ACC - Atlantic Coast Conference (youtube.com; video; Our Lads)

2022 College Football Preview – ACC - Atlantic Coast Conference

ACC college football preview: Breaking down the conference's best players, games and more (ESPN; Hale & Adelson)

The ACC did not exactly have a banner campaign in 2021, missing the College Football Playoff for the first time while failing to finish with a team ranked in the top 10 after Clemson posted its most losses since 2014.

All eyes will be on the Tigers once again to see whether they regroup to carry the flag for the conference. But beyond Clemson, this should be a much stronger conference top to bottom than in years past. Ten of 14 teams return their starting quarterbacks -- although Wake Forest, the defending Atlantic Division champion, was dealt a tough blow when it announced Sam Hartman will be out indefinitely with a non-football-related medical issue. In the Coastal Division, optimism is high at Miami under first-year coach Mario Cristobal, who returned home to the Hurricanes to revitalize a program that has never won an ACC championship.

No matter what happens, this will be a year for the record books -- as the final season of the conference having divisions.

Storylines to watch

1. Does Clemson return to form?

Despite missing the playoff last season, Clemson still won 10 games for the 11th straight year -- only the third program in history to accomplish such a feat. While that is an incredible achievement, the bar has been raised in Clemson after six straight playoff appearances. But more than that, the bar for offensive performance has been raised, and what happened in 2021 simply failed to meet expectations. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei was not consistent enough, and neither were the receivers or the offensive line. Uiagalelei returns as the starting QB -- and the largest focus both on the Tigers and in the conference should be on him and whether he can fulfill his potential. If he doesn't, what should be one of the best defenses in the nation might not be enough to get Clemson back into the playoff.

2. What does Miami do in Year 1 under Cristobal?

There is one storyline that is undefeated year after year in the ACC: Is this the year Miami will compete for a championship? Media voters seem to think so, as they selected the Hurricanes as the preseason choice to win the Coastal Division and advance to the ACC championship game. Of course, this is the sixth time Miami has been the preseason choice; the Hurricanes have one division title in their history. This year, the expectations are high thanks to Cristobal and the return of quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who emerged last season after going through camp competing for the backup job. Cristobal has hired himself an elite staff, adding to the expectation level outside the program. But Cristobal wants nothing to do with where people think his program should be right now. He just wants his players focused on getting better.

3. Who emerges as the top quarterback in the league?

You have to go back to 2016 to find a quarterback group as deep, talented and experienced as the one in the ACC. Hands down, this is the best collective group of talent in the country, although losing Hartman from the mix right from the start is tough. He finished second in ACC preseason player of the year voting to NC State quarterback Devin Leary, the top choice after throwing for 3,433 yards, 35 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2021. Brennan Armstrong at Virginia ranked No. 2 in the nation in total offense (4,700 total yards), Hartman ranked No. 9 (4,591) and Louisville's Malik Cunningham ranked No. 14 (3,971). Then there are Uiagalelei, Van Dyke, Phil Jurkovec at Boston College and Jordan Travis at Florida State to keep an eye on, as well. No matter who ends up as the top quarterback, this group is going to make it fun to watch.

Power Rankings

The 2021 season represented a seismic shift in power in the ACC, with Pitt and Wake Forest playing for the league's title -- just the third ACC championship game in league history that didn't include Clemson, Florida State or Virginia Techand the first since 2006. So, does that mean an official changing of the guard for our 2022 Power Rankings? Ah, not so fast. Clemson remains the most talented team in the conference, but what's clear from last season is that the Tigers have some real question marks, and the rest of the league has some genuine threats too.

1. Clemson
2. NC State
3. Pitt
4. Miami
5. Louisville
6. North Carolina
7. Wake Forest
8. Florida State
9. Virginia
10. Syracuse
11. Boston College
12. Virginia Tech
13. Georgia Tech

ACC football: Top 10 biggest questions facing the conference for 2022 season (247sports.com; Backus)

College football season is just around the corner. Even though spring practice and fall camp clarify some things, there are still plenty of questions to be answered before Aug. 27, when the first games of the 2022 season officially kick off.

The ACC is no exception to that. Out of all the Power Five conferences, perhaps it is the ACC that faces the most uncertainty. For one, the conference welcomed four new head coaches to its ranks during the most recent coaching carousel. Each inherits a wildly different situation and it will be interesting to watch how their careers unfold.

But that is just one mystery facing the ACC entering the 2022 season. Elsewhere, there are plenty of programs that are trying to break in new quarterbacks, or replace production lost in the transfer portal. The future of the conference itself is in question, with realignment threatening every league outside of the Big Ten and SEC.

With all that in mind, here are 10 pressing questions facing the ACC for the 2022 season:

1. CAN THE ACC MAKE IT BACK TO THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF?

With Clemson’s “down year” last season, the ACC missed out on the College Football Playoff for the first time since its inception. Of course, it was Clemson carrying that burden every year. The Tigers are built to make it back to the proverbial Final Four and are the favorite out of the ACC to do so. NC State is a potential dark horse with its veteran roster and Pitt might be a lot better than some expect.

2. HOW WILL CLEMSON’S QB SITUATION SHAKE OUT?

But the ACC’s College Football Playoff hopes run through the Palmetto State. Clemson has a loaded defense — particularly along the line of scrimmage — and some very talented skill position players. The offensive line is a huge question mark but the biggest question facing the Tigers is the play of quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. He threw nine touchdowns to 10 interceptions last season. Dabo Swinney is adamant that Uiagalelei has looked like a different player, for the better, during fall camp. If Uiagalelei cannot get it going again, five-star true freshman Cade Klubnik might have to be ready to go.

3. WHEN WILL SAM HARTMAN RETURN?

Wake Forest received some shocking and devastating news when coach Dave Clawson revealed that star quarterback Sam Hartman is out indefinitely due to a non-football related medical condition. Clawson did provide a glimmer of hope in saying that Hartman should be back at some point, but it seems the Demon Deacons will have to make due without him for a significant amount of time. New starter Mitch Griffis has just 15 pass attempts to his name over three years with the program.

ACC Panic Room: Expectations set for NC State :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; video; ACC Panic Room)

Worst CFB Underachievers going into 2022 (ESPN) (RX; HM)

Worst CFB Underachievers going into 2022 (ESPN)

From ESPN's "annual underachiever tiers of college football", here's the list, along with some ACC-related comments by Adam Rittenberg:

Tier I: Angst in Aggieland

Texas A&M
"...zero national championships since 1939. Since then, plenty of programs with fewer resources and natural luxuries [including Syracuse and Pitt] have achieved what continues to elude the Aggies."

Tier II: L.A. and the Longhorns

UCLA, USC, Texas

Tier III: Fading dynasties

Nebraska, Miami
Those of us drawn to college football in the 1980s and 1990s would never have predicted a time when Nebraska and Miami would largely vanish from the national radar... The Canes and Huskers were the sport's defining programs for a generation. Miami won three national titles in the 1980s, Nebraska followed with three in the 1990s and Miami tacked on another in 2001 with arguably the most talented college team ever. From 1983 to 2003, the two teams combined for 27 AP top-10 finishes... Miami's stretch of seven consecutive AP top-three finishes from 1986 to 1992 remains one of the most notable achievements in college football history.
...the Canes [have not] won a national title since 2001, [not even] a conference championship since 2003... despite favorable division placement in the ACC Coastal... Miami has only one division championship (2017) in the ACC and boasts only four AP Top 25 finishes since 2005... Miami finds itself in one of the nation's best recruiting hubs. Miami's lukewarm institutional investment in football shifted dramatically late last year, as the program hired alum Mario Cristobal from Oregon and has sunk money into the program and its NIL appeal. The expectation in Coral Gables is conference titles and CFP appearances soon...

Tier IV: League title lulls

NC State, North Carolina, Minnesota, Ohio

Clemson football's Xavier Thomas could be back for critical ACC games (greenvilleonline.com; Shanesy)

Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas could be back in time for critical back-to-back early season ACC games.

Thomas suffered a foot injury during Saturday morning's closed scrimmage at Memorial Stadium and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said after the team's practice Monday. The expected length of absence was first reported by Tiger Illustrated.

"It's an unfortunate setback, but he'll respond," Goodwin said.

If there are no setbacks, that would mean Thomas has a chance to play in the Sept. 24 game at No. 19 Wake Forest and in the Oct. 1 home game against No. 13 N.C. State. The Tigers open the season Sept. 5 at Georgia Tech and the next two games are at home against Furman and Louisiana Tech, respectively.

Mandel's Mailbag: No Big Ten on ESPN. Does that bode well for Big 12, Pac-12? (theathletic.com; $; Mandel)

For years and years, it was a weekly rite of passage. Lee Corso would don the head gear and wave good bye from the College GameDay set, at which point ESPN would take us to a crowd shot in Evanston or West Lafayette for whatever C-list Big Ten game they’d stuck in the early window.

It will be the end of an era starting next season, as the Big Ten and Disney families wave their goodbyes. And by the season after that, we may hear Rece Davis say something like, “Coming up next, it’s Tennessee at Texas.”

But that won’t be remotely as jarring as turning on CBS in the middle of the day and hearing that familiar SEC on CBS theme music playing over a crowd shot of … Beaver Stadium?

And don’t even get me started on trying to find an Indiana-Minnesota game on Peacock.

(Note: Submitted questions have been lightly edited for length and clarity.)

What is the real impact of the Big Ten not being on ESPN in 2024? While the Big Ten possibly loses prominence on the most important media outlet in the sport, it’s not like GameDay is going to ignore the Midwest and L.A. markets. The College Football Playoff show has to cover the rankings, so it’s not like Ohio State is going to be ignored. However, while no one cares, I’d imagine sports like basketball lose viewers if games are parked on FS1 instead of ESPN. — Dan K., Minneapolis

If ESPN isn’t a part of the Big Ten’s new deal, that has to bode well for the Big 12 and Pac-12, right? How much space will ESPN have left to fill if it isn’t broadcasting any B1G games? In that same vein, how much space will Fox have left to fill, given that it’ll be giving up a couple of key games to CBS and NBC? — Andrew G., Fort Worth, TX

I agree with Dan that for football at least, the significance of ESPN losing the Big Ten is largely symbolic. I don’t buy the conspiracy theories that ESPN will start treating the Big Ten the way it did the NHL. It’s not going to suddenly ignore huge brands like Ohio State and Michigan. Maybe GameDay comes to town less often, but turning that show into a glorified SEC Nation is only going to alienate a huge chunk of the viewership.

Swarbrick: Big Ten-NBC deal 'perfect' for Notre Dame (theathletic.com; $; Sampson)

Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick expressed comfort with his program’s position amid a time of radical change in college athletics during a virtual chat Wednesday with vice president for university relations Lou Nanni.

“When I started this job … I don’t say that to take any credit for it … all the commentary was were we relevant anymore. This year, no one is asking that question,” Swarbrick said. “A lot of this dynamic has just reinforced the decisions made over a lot of years that have placed Notre Dame in a very good position. That’s my biggest takeaway.”

In a wide-ranging conversation that touched on the Big Ten’s imminent media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC, how Notre Dame fits into the NIL space and what would trigger the Irish to turn their back on independence, Swarbrick spoke like a veteran athletics director with leverage and an awareness of the power in holding on to it.

Swarbrick reiterated any situation in which Notre Dame football joined a conference — he didn’t suggest one league over another — would likely come from the school losing a broadcast partner, losing access to the College Football Playoff or losing a home for its Olympic sports. Notre Dame is a member of the ACC for its Olympic sports except for hockey, which competes in the Big Ten.

With Tyler Buchner starting, Notre Dame 'full steam ahead' into new era (theathletic.com; $; Sampson)

Tyler Buchner sat patiently to the side while the coach who selected him as Notre Dame’s next starting quarterback explained a three-year process that led to this moment.

Tommy Rees was just a quarterbacks coach, Marcus Freeman was just a defensive coordinator (at Cincinnati) and Buchner had started just one high school game (but didn’t finish it) when the Irish coaching staff first identified him as the future. Back then, Brian Kelly was Notre Dame’s head coach and Chip Long was its offensive coordinator. And on a hot day inside Notre Dame Stadium during the summer of 2019, the quarterback from The Bishop’s School in La Jolla put up a 4.68 40-yard dash before spraying the ball all over the field. That was after he’d done the same at Alabama and Georgia.

Notre Dame offered Buchner before he could get out of the stadium, never mind off campus. Buchner had some loose connections to Rees, with roots in the northern suburbs of Chicago through both their fathers. And like his future position coach and eventual offensive coordinator, Buchner understood the game at a high level. But he had more natural ability than the guy who will ultimately call plays for him.

“The more time I got to spend around him, ‘OK, this is the type of personality that can be the quarterback at Notre Dame,’” Rees said. “So it started with talent. Obviously, evaluation. And then as we dug into the character, that was something that we knew, he could lead this program.”

Now Buchner will. The sophomore will make his first career start at Ohio State in exactly three weeks.

Pro football: Clayton’s Van Deusen sees plea for safety realized in NFL’s Guardian Caps (nny360.com; St Croix)

While football fans around the country watch NFL training camp highlights this summer, many are looking on in confusion or debating the fashion sense of the now-mandated Guardian Cap for helmets.

But Clayton resident Roland Van Deusen was overjoyed while witnessing his advocacy for the equipment that he believes will save the sport receive its long-awaited approval.

The NFL is requiring all offensive and defensive linemen, tight ends, and linebackers to wear the protective soft-shell helmet covering, known as the “Guardian Cap,” for every practice up to the second preseason game this year with the aim of reducing the impact of head contact to limit concussions.

The resolution was passed at the annual owner’s meeting this past May and unanimously approved by the Competition Committee, Healthy and Safety Committee, and all 32 NFL owners.

“This thing has been coming along and coming along, and now it’s showtime for a big study that I think will maybe save football,” Van Deusen said.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association conducted a peer-reviewed laboratory study last year that stated the Guardian Cap results in at least a 10-percent reduction in severity of impact force if one player is wearing the helmet add-on, and at least a 20 percent reduction in impact force if two players in a collision are wearing them.

The NFL Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Allen Sills, cited the study in a press release to announce the new mandate earlier this spring.

Pop singer/songwriter and Syracuse University alum Claud to make New York State Fair debut (Photo: New York State Fair)

Pop singer, Syracuse University alum Claud to make New York State Fair debut on Pride Day (PS; Moodee Lockman)

Pop singer-songwriter and Syracuse University alum Claud will make their Great New York State Fair debut on the Chevy Park stage on August 26.

Claud is best known for coming-of-age lyrics that explore the various stages of relationships delivered through melancholic, bubblegum pop music that leaves listeners feeling good.

Claud’s journey as an artist began during their second semester at SU in 2018 they released an EP under the pseudonym Toast with their best friend Joshua Mehling.

As the EP gained momentum, Claud made the decision to pursue music full-time.

In 2020, Claud became the first artist to sign with Pheobe Bridgers’ record label, Saddest Factory Records.

Their debut album “Super Monster” was released in early 2021, featuring a compilation that blends 90s alt-rock and 2000s bubblegum pop with the energy of modern, online life through songs including “Gold,” “Wish You Were Gay,” and “Soft Spot” - which Vogue ranked among the top songs of 2021.

Claud, who hails from the suburbs of Chicago, identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns.

“We are delighted to welcome Claud, a former Syracuse University student, to our concert repertoire at the Great New York State Fair,” said New York State Fair Interim Director Sean Hennessey. “Claud’s style, which fuses nostalgia with innovative energy to create ‘dream pop’ is generating a buzz in the music industry, and they’re setting a great example for young adults who might feel like they don’t quite fit into a specific mold.”
