Welcome to Buttered Corn Day!

There are six different kinds of maize, or corn, and one of them is sweet corn, the kind that is most often celebrated on National Buttered Corn Day. Corn was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico thousands of years ago, and more corn is now produced around the world than wheat or rice, although not all of it is used for human consumption. Sweet corn is picked when the kernels are still soft, and it is cooked in many different ways. Most commonly it is boiled or steamed on a stove, roasted or grilled on a grill or in an oven, or microwaved. Many times skewers are put on both ends of the cob after the husk is removed so it can can more easily be held, and butter, salt, and pepper are common seasonings used on the corn. It also can be cut off the cob and eaten with a fork. It can be a pretty healthy snack if it is not overloaded with butter and salt, as an ear of corn usually isn't much more than 100 calories, and is high in fiber. But, being that today is National Buttered Corn Day, you probably shouldn't worry too much about your health just this once.

Projecting Syracuse football's Week 1 depth chart, contributors as preseason camp comes to close (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Coming out of Syracuse football's penultimate fall camp practice, let's dig into a projected depth chart. In lieu of a daily observations and takeaways post, we'll mix those into a two-deep while breaking down how the rotations are shaking out among deeper position battles.

QUARTERBACK

Starter: Garrett Shrader

Dino Babers
wasn't blowing hot air when he said Shrader was the locked-and-loaded QB1 going into fall camp. The dual-threat playmaker has looked the part, consistently throwing the best balls in practice and showing growth in terms of both accuracy and decision-making. Now he needs to solidify that progression against a live defense by taking advantage of SU's expanded passing game without succumbing to the increased risk opportunity.

Backup: Carlos Del Rio-Wilson

The Florida transfer has worked with the 2s about a dozen times in front of media this month. No other quarterback has even stepped on the field.
Del Rio-Wilson has the mobility to keep the scope of the offense intact should he need to come on for Shrader. Decision-making, particularly beyond the first progression, is expected to continue improving as he stacks reps in the system.

RUNNING BACK

Starter: Sean Tucker

Look for Tucker to show off a more well-rounded skill set this year. He's been actively involved in the passing game, lining up out wide and in the slot. Protection, though, could end up being the more important team-oriented facet of his game.
As a runner, SU's All-American will look to re-break the single-season yardage record he set in 2021.

Backup:

The backup QB competition looks like it’s over (depth chart projection) (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football’s backup quarterback competition didn’t turn out to be much of a dogfight.

From the first day of fall camp, Florida transfer QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was the one taking snaps behind starting quarterback Garrett Shrader in the drills that mattered most. Rio-Wilson came in after Shrader for reps at the goal line. Rio-Wilson then led the second-team offense during 11-on-11 periods that media was able to view.

While coach Dino Babers had said other guys were getting second-string reps during parts of practice not open to media, it hasn’t felt like a coincidence Rio-Wilson is the only one getting that time in front of the cameras.

And earlier this week, Michigan-transfer Dan Villari was practicing at another position for a potential role on special teams.

Ultimately, the Orange is still gearing its offense toward Shrader. Rio-Wilson will likely only see the field out of necessity, and maybe once or twice if SU feels it has a solid lead over its opponent.

No one’s challenging Shrader for the starting job.

As for the offensive line, Babers said Monday he had solidified a top seven for the group. As for who the other two in that seven are besides the five predicted as starters below, Anthony Red and Enrique Cruz Jr. are strong bets.

A former SU football player and this year’s Zunic Award winner dies at 78 (PS; Leiker)

Former Syracuse University football tailback and kicker Richard C. Murphy died Sunday at Upstate University Hospital. He was 78 years old.

The family did not list a cause of death, though Murphy had been diagnosed with cancer later in his life.

A lifelong resident of Syracuse, Murphy graduated from Nottingham High School and joined the Orange football program in 1963, playing for the freshman team.

He played on the varsity squad the next season through the 1966 season, before graduating the following spring with a Bachelor’s degree in history.

In that stretch, Murphy played in the 1965 Sugar Bowl and 1966 Gator Bowl under coach Ben Schwartzwalder. The Orange finished with a winning record all three seasons that Murphy played varsity.

Best ACC Football Stadiums To Visit By Pregame Experience (bookies.com; Kilbridge)

From upstate New York, through the Appalachian Mountains, and down to the shores of South Beach, the ACC covers a vast variety of geographical expanse with a common thread – fans gathering up and down the coast every Saturday for some college football action.

While Clemson and Florida State have dominated on the field, combining to win 10 of the last 11 conference titles, the rest of the ACC still brings it strong with the pregame festivities and tailgates hoping this will be the year – just as it was for Pitt in 2021, with the Panthers beating Wake Forest in the title game for its first-ever ACC championship.

Others haven’t been so fortunate in the top-heavy conference, but that never slows down the party on game day.

Bookies.com has complied a rankings list for every ACC school in terms of college football pregame experience. The rankings were assigned from an algorithm based on multiple factors, including:
  • Location: Close to the action, accessible to fans
  • Tailgating: The ability to park and enjoy a crisp fall day with a beverage and grill
  • Entertainment Around Stadium: A vibrant bar and restaurant scene within walking distance to your seat
  • Family Sentiment: Is the area safe and entertaining for kids and those with kids?
Here are all 14 ACC pregame destinations, ranked.

Teel: TV ratings database shows value of top ACC football brands and need for them to perform (richmond.com; Teel)

Boasting a combined 11 national championships, Miami, Clemson and Florida State are the ACC’s premier football brands. And given its seven conference titles from 1995-2011 — three Big East and four ACC — Virginia Tech makes a strong case for the league’s No. 4 perch.

A television ratings database compiled by Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis affirms those top four and how much the conference needs the Hokies, Seminoles and Hurricanes to reverse their current funks.

Lewis’ archives include games aired on the most accessible platforms — ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and FS1 — and reveal several other truths:

  • Pandemic-ravaged schedules duly noted, Notre Dame’s one-time appearance as an ACC football member in 2020 was further evidence why every conference pines for the Fighting Irish.
  • Big Ten and SEC games tower over college football, popularity that explains their television revenue dominance.
  • The Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry has been central to five consecutive years of Black Friday ratings success for the ACC on ABC and ESPN.
  • The exclusive Labor Day night college football telecast has been even more valuable to the conference.
We’ll hit those points momentarily, but first, back to the ACC’s leading brands.
From 2013, the league’s first with 14 football members, through last year, 74 conference games drew TV audiences of at least 2.0 million. That number does not include 2020, when pandemic concerns prompted scores of cancellations and postponements.

Among those 74 games, Clemson was involved in 33, Florida State 29, Miami 15, and Virginia Tech 12.

N.C. State was next with 10, followed by Syracuse nine, Louisville seven, North Carolina and Georgia Tech six, Virginia, Pitt and Wake Forest five, Boston College four, Duke and Maryland one.

Mandel's ACC predictions: A QB-heavy league could be entertaining (theathletic.com; $; Mandel)

Forget SEC West vs. SEC East or Big Ten West vs. Big Ten East. The disparity this year between the ACC’s Atlantic and Coastal divisions could be staggering.

Clemson has long tipped the scale toward the Atlantic, but NC State is a possible top-10 team and all seven could reach a bowl. (Wake Forest is a top-20 team with quarterback Sam Hartman, but it’s unclear when he’ll return). Meanwhile, I could see a 9-3 or 8-4 team winning the Coastal, and I could definitely see Duke and Georgia Tech failing to beat any conference opponent besides each other.

Syracuse football 2022 opponent preview: Florida State Seminoles (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

We’ve reached the final home game of our Syracuse Orange football previews. After traveling to the Steel City of Pittsburgh, SU faces another ACC foe who will remain an annual affair thanks to the new schedule model. For the first time since the bye, their opponent won’t be a team that entered the season ranked.

Florida State Seminoles

School: Florida State University
Mascot: Seminoles
#BRAND Slogans: #NoleFamily, #OneTribe, #KeepCLIMBing
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: #KeepCLINGing, #FrequentScandalsUniversity, or “Offcial Top 20 Public Institution
Recommended Blog: Tomahawk Nation
Conference: ACC

History vs. Syracuse: The Seminoles are 12-2 against the Orange and have never lost to them at home. The two SU wins came in 1966, the schools’ first meeting, and 2018, their last matchup in the Dome. The ‘Noles rode a ten-game winning streak between those two contests and were ranked in nine of them. Syracuse has played FSU every season since it joined the ACC, with the exception of 2020 due to COVID rescheduling.

Coach: Mike Norvell, third season. Norvell was a wide receiver at Central Arkansas and subsequently became a grad assistant. He would then work in several different offensive coaching positions with Tulsa, Pitt, and Arizona State. He was promoted to associate head coach halfway through his ASU tenure, and in 2016, he started his first head coaching gig at Memphis. After four seasons there, FSU signed Norvell to a six-year contract. His 38-15 record with the Tigers has not translated well with the Seminoles: they’re only 8-13 since he took over.

Orange Watch: Part III, 2022 Syracuse football game-by-game predictions - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

We had to do a double-take when researching the Syracuse-Pittsburgh series dating back to the Paul Pasqualoni years. First off, Syracuse has only won once (2001) on the road since the Panthers moved off-campus to Heinz Field (now Acrisure Stadium) that same year, and in the last 20 games against its longtime Eastern rivals, SU is just 3-17. 3-17!

Even the strong 2018 bowl-winning Orange team lost 44-37 in OT on the road, one of only two ACC defeats that season.

This year will likely result in the same tough challenge because Pitt (17th AP preseason poll) figures to be fighting for the Coastal Division title (with Miami and North Carolina) for the second straight year, and the road game concludes a brutal stretch of four straight matchups against AP preseason ranked teams.

Gone are the explosive duo of quarterback Kenny Pickett (drafted in the first round by the crosstown NFL Steelers) and wideout Jordan Addison (transferred to USC), but back the other way is USC transfer QB Kedon Slovis to run the offense. In a shootout with Garrett Shrader, the Panthers score last and keep the hex on the ‘Cuse with a 41-38 win. (5-4, 2-3)

It seems incomprehensible with the resources that the program has, the fanbase, the talent in the state, and the legacy of winning under Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher, that Florida State would have fallen so far so fast since Fisher left for Texas A&M in December 2017.

The plummet actually started in Fisher’s final season when he departed after the 11th game (5-6 under Fisher with a 7-6 final record), continued through the disastrous 21-game tenure under Willie Taggart in 2018-19, and has produced two losing seasons so far in the Mike Norvell era. So, there’s no place to go but up.

The ‘Noles are primed to take a step forward this year, but it’s relative to four straight losing seasons. Like SU, FSU is eyeing six wins and bowl eligibility against a tough schedule.

Syracuse lost a winnable game in Tallahassee last season on a final play field goal, and this year will dominate in the home Dome finale. Sean Tucker will run for three scores and Shrader will pass for two more in a 42-28 victory clinching bowl eligibility, prompting a sideline liquid soaking of Dino Babers as the final seconds tick down. (6-4, 3-3)

The news on August 10 that Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman is out indefinitely with “a non-football related medical condition” was stunning. The redshirt junior and two-time captain is the Demon Deacons all-time leader with 72 touchdowns passes, coming off a season in which he led the team to an 11-3 record, threw for 4,228 yards and 39 of those 72 career touchdowns, and ran for another 11 TDs as a second-team all-conference selection.

Wake coach Dave Clawson expects Hartman to return this season, but the Syracuse game is second-to-last on the schedule November 19, so it’s unknown if Hartman will indeed be back by then or not.

Syracuse Football’s Most Important Players: #9 Marlowe Wax – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Frank)

It’s day two of analyzing Syracuse’s most important players for the 2022 season. Yesterday, Carter focused on Courtney Jackson on the offensive side of the ball, but it’s time to shift over to Tony White’s 3-3-5 defense. The middle three of that formation have some of the Orange’s best, and most important players this season.

Let’s go with third-year linebacker Marlowe Wax at number nine. Wax, a Baltimore native, has played in all 23 games of his career so far, and the results have been strong. His numbers have improved each season, as has his playing time. After making 33 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks as a freshman in 2020, those numbers bumped up to 60 tackles, seven for a loss, and four sacks in 2021.

WHY SYRACUSE NEEDS HIM

Working alongside Mikel Jones, the unquestioned leader of the SU defense, has allowed Wax to play freely next to him and rush the passer. As has been highlighted throughout the spring, summer, and now into training camp, the defensive line is arguably the weakest unit on Syracuse’s roster, which puts more pressure on the linebackers to make plays behind them.

The Orange’s run defense has been a weakness over Tony White’s couple of years on staff as defensive coordinator, while the pass defense has been stellar. Wax is going to be tasked with playing a big role in stepping up behind the defensive line to make plays in the hole and stifle opposing running backs.

Not only that, with Jones commanding the defense in the middle of the field, Wax will have pass rush responsibilities as well. The Orange’s lack of depth and experience along the defensive line puts an onus on the linebackers, guys like Wax and others to help in pass rush situations either via blitzing or rushing on the outside.

ACC 2023 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (PFN; Pauline)

...
Syracuse Orange

Time is running out for Dino Babers at Syracuse. During his six seasons as head coach, the Orange have had just one winning season and no more than two players selected in any single draft. The upcoming season holds hope for Syracuse fans, as five players on the depth chart hold draftable grades.

Matthew Bergeron, OT | Grade: 3.62 | Projected Round: 3

During my Syracuse writeup last summer, offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron was mentioned as the top next-level prospect on the roster and held a sixth-round grade. Twelve months later, he’s still the top SU prospect but has improved three rounds based off his play last season.

Bergeron is a long (6’5″), mobile left tackle who displays excellent footwork, lateral range, and the ability to handle speed rushers. Fundamentally sound, he does a terrific job with his hands and blocks with proper pad level. I’d like to see Bergeron get stronger, especially in his base, as he’s often pushed into the pocket. Yet, he comes with growth potential and would be a good fit for a zone-blocking system.

Marlowe Wax, LB | Grade: 3.48 | Projected Round: 5

Junior Marlowe Wax is a tremendous run-stuffing linebacker who also shows skill in coverage. Wax is powerful and more times than not holds his ground against offensive linemen or defeats them to make the tackle. He presently holds an early-fifth-round grade on my board, though I do see Day 2 potential.

Mikel Jones, LB | Grade: 3.38 | Projected Round: 6

Mikel Jones is another solid run-defending LB who’s slightly better in pursuit than his teammate but is smaller. Jones is graded a round later than Wax, as he may not hit six feet when officially measured by scouts.

Stefon Thompson, LB | Grade: 3.35 | Projected Round: 6

Stefon Thompson — the third LB of the group — is probably my favorite. He’s a terrific athlete who gets tremendous depth on drops and shows a ton of force on the blitz. Thompson is also undersized with limited growth potential, which will push him deep into the draft.

Syracuse Football: An August preview of the Orange’s October games (itlh; Fiello)

So last month, I posted a quick preview and predictions about the September portion of the Syracuse football schedule. I don’t normally do predictions but you the readers who are amazing deserve what you ask for and you asked for something different than poems.

Unfortunately, life has been interesting since so I wasn’t able to finish October and November but I’m here now and I’m going to give you my honest opinion as a diehard Orange fan about what to expect.

Without further ado, here are the October games as scheduled right now via cuse.com and some fun information that I hope will help us all enjoy amping up for the season to start together.

Here’s how I think that the October games will play out for Syracuse football.

Wagner Seahawks at Syracuse Orange
Saturday, October 1st at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, NY
Time & TV TBD Radio-TK99

Syracuse football should win this game (especially if I’m basing this off last season and Wagner was 0-11 last season). This is a “trap game” of sorts though because if you win, some fans will say “duh, they were supposed to win” and if they lose or it’s close, those fans will turn their backs on the season and the program. In reality, this game should be Syracuse’s first game of the season and deemed an exhibition just like the NFL or Syracuse basketball has to start their year & work on lineups. But television networks own the soul of college sports so it’s more important to spread these games out so that the first week is more appealing for the same reason Syracuse football left the Big East (well more money but also a more appealing schedule to sports network overlords and fans who don’t want to see “lesser games”).

Prediction: Syracuse 44 – Wagner 9

NC State Wolfpack at Syracuse Orange
Saturday, October 15th at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, NY
Time & TV TBD Radio-TK99

Okay, so this will sound odd to some possibly if you look at the schedule, but this is the game I fear the most (Notre Dame is a VERY close second). The good news is that it’s at home in the JMA Wireless Dome. The bad news is that NC State’s quarterback is Devin Leary, who last season beat Philip Rivers’ record for most touchdowns in a season and only threw 5 interceptions the whole season. I’ve seen many ACC insiders saying they’re expecting a big season and that’s saying a lot as they’re coming off a 9-win season last year. However, I feel it’s worth noting that they were 2-3 playing away from home in the ACC last season and if Syracuse football can win those first 5 games, maybe a big home crowd can help give the Orange the advantage.

Prediction: Syracuse 37 – NC State 34 in overtime

Syracuse Orange at Clemson Tigers
Saturday, October 22 at “Death Valley” aka Memorial Stadium in Clemson, SC
Time & TV TBD Radio-TK99

Okay so let’s talk about Clemson. This game is at Clemson, and Syracuse football has proven they can play well there only faltering in the last 41 seconds of the game in Death Valley in 2018. Writing this in August makes it hard to say how this Clemson team will be but their offense wasn’t as effective last season as they were in the past and their offensive coordinator is now coaching Virginia so will they be better or will they “fall off” again (they still won 10 games)? Clemson is looking to prove they belong back in the national championship conversation and Syracuse is out to prove this program deserves more respect.

Prediction: Syracuse 24 – Clemson 23

ACC expert picks 2022: Most overrated and underrated teams, projected order of finish, bold predictions (cbssports.com; Patterson)

Spanning six seasons from 2015-20, the ACC came and went each year with little drama. It was simply understood that Clemson was likely going to cruise to the conference title and secure its spot in the College Football Playoff, which it did winning two national championships along the way.

The Tigers stumbled last season despite preseason hype surrounding star quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, opening the door for Pittsburgh to win the ACC crown behind the arm of Heisman finalist Kenny Pickett. The unfamiliar parity in the league, though, led to the ACC being left without a chance at the national championship for the first time in the CFP era.

Entering this season, the expectation is that Clemson will bounce back and reclaim its stronghold on the league; the Tigers are the betting favorite to win the ACC at -140, according to Caesars . But the Tigers may be staring down a formidable challenger -- not just this season but for years to come -- if a Miami program optimistic about a return to prominence actually succeeds with one of its own, Mario Cristobal, leading the charge. There may even be a few dark horse teams waiting in the wings, salivating at their chance to surprisingly earn top-dog status in the conference, much as Pitt did last season.

The Tigers may be favored to return to their perch, but the ACC is still rife with storylines to follow this season. Our CBS Sports college football experts have provided their picks and predictions for the ACC ahead of the 2021 season below.

Most overrated team

Clemson: The Tigers may indeed win the ACC. Maybe last year was a speed bump, but I really need to see it first. As well as the defense may perform -- and it's good -- Uiagalelei will have to live up to his expectations. If not, well, the ACC is too strong now for the Tigers to be able to slog through mediocrity. Watch out for Wake Forest, NC State, Florida State and Miami. It is unwise to grandfather Clemson into the title game just yet. -- Dennis Dodd

Pitt: The Panthers had as outstanding a season as can be expected last year while winning the ACC and sending Pickett to the Heisman ceremony. An encore will be difficult to replicate, but I don't see the Panthers finishing the season as high in the polls as they've started. It's too much to ask considering the loss of Pickett, Jordan Addison and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. Plus, Pat Narduzzi complaining that the team threw the ball too much last season isn't an encouraging sign. -- Tom Fornelli (also Shehan Jeyarajah)

Miami: There is a scenario where the combination of young talent from last year's squad and the influx of transfer talent gel immediately with the arrival of Cristobal. But I'm much more concerned about the returning production at wide receiver and the potential of that aforementioned gelling. The Hurricanes could likely play down to the competition and still compete for an ACC Coastal title, but I still think Cristobal is two recruiting cycles away from closing the gap with Clemson. -- Chip Patterson

Wake Forest: I love coach Dave Clawson and can't wait to see what quarterback Sam Hartman does with another year in the system. We don't know when that will actually happen, though, with an illness keeping him out of action. In a quarterback-driven conference where points will be aplenty, it's hard to imagine Wake navigating through the schedule with ease in Hartman's absence. Even when he returns, the defense is still a massive liability that will prevent the Demon Deacons from consistently competing in the ACC Atlantic. -- Barrett Sallee

NC State: The assumption that NC State will break through for 10 wins this season discounts the impact of what it lost in the backfield. Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person Jr. comprised an elite duo, combining for nearly 1,400 yards rushing and 49 receptions last season. Without them, the Wolfpack risk becoming entirely one-dimensional as they also have bid farewell to the NFL Draft's No. 6 overall pick, Ikem Ekwonu, on the offensive line. NC State is a clear bowl team, but it gives off 2021 Iowa State and North Carolina vibes. The dreams of a league title and dark horse CFP contention are overblown. -- David Cobb

North Carolina: When Mack Brown took over, the expectation was that the Tar Heels would be competing for division titles, at least, if not surpassing Clemson by now. Three years in, UNC has only one regular season above .500 -- the 8-3 mark posted in the pandemic year. This season may be another that floats around the .500 mark. Meanwhile, Miami has made big strides and looks like the program to beat in the Coastal. Things are certainly better than at the end of the Larry Fedora era, but they have not yet reached the level that many expected. -- Jerry Palm

Most underrated team

Wake Forest: You know it, and I know it. Clawson will simply out-scheme you. The Slow Mesh Spread confuses, and it's proven productive. Hartman is out, which does add some concern. The Demon Deacons get Clemson at home on Sept. 24, which should be, well, interesting. -- Dodd (also Palm)

Boston College: The commitment of Phil Jurkovec and Zay Flowers to the program speaks to what Boston College has built, and is continuing to build, on the Heights. Jeff Hafley should field his best defense since since he arrived after serving as Ohio State defensive coordinator, and the experienced QB-WR combo of Jurkovec and Flowers is good enough for the Eagles to exceed expectations in a tough Atlantic. -- Patterson

Clemson: I get it. Uiagalelei did not live up to expectations, and last year's 10-win season was a "down year." This is a much different setting, though. DJ-U has rededicated himself, gotten in shape and knows that freshman Cade Klubnik is there should he stumble. That's a healthy quarterback situation, not a shaky one. When you combine it with the best defensive front four in the country and one of the best running backs in the nation in Will Shipley, you have a recipe for national success, not just ACC dominance. -- Sallee

Louisville: Have the Cardinals turned a corner? After a handful of recruiting wins, it's hard not to feel the rare good vibes around Scott Satterfield and his program. The Cardinals lost four games by one score last year with two of the other losses coming against 10-win SEC squads. Now, Louisville returns top-15 national production, including highly underrated quarterback Malik Cunningham. With a manageable first half of the season, Louisville could quickly find themselves on a roll. -- Jeyarajah (also Fornelli, Cobb)

Locked On Pitt: Can Pitt Win the ACC Coastal Again? (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Farabaugh)

With the NCAA Football season coming up in a mere number of days, Pitt and Miami will both be taking the field sooner rather than later. ACC Network analyst Jordan Cornette flipped his ACC Coastal prediction from Miami to Pitt. But why did he do so? And does it make sense?

Miami is undoubtedly talented, but they are still a young team that could be a year away. ACC Network analyst and former NFL analyst Eddie Royal was extremely impressed by Pitt’s experience that he called them an ‘NFL team’. Could Pitt’s experience push Pitt over the edge for the division win?

Then, we talk about Kedon Slovis’ importance in the puzzle. Can he elevate Pitt’s offense like Tyler Van Dyke can elevate Miami’s offense? It could be a close battle down to the end, but Nick Farabaugh gives his ACC Coastal prediction.

How Tony Elliott's long, winding path led him to Virginia (ESPN; Adelson)

When Virginia coach Tony Elliott walked into ACC media day last month, his shoes commanded immediate attention.

On one side of his personalized Nikes, Elliott has the names of his wife, Tamika, and their children, A.J. and Ace. On the other side, he has a Clemson jersey, where he played from 1999 to 2003. His left shoe has the date he was hired as head coach of the Cavaliers, Dec. 10, 2021, written inside the Nike swoosh -- a day he had been waiting for since starting his coaching career in 2006.

Next to the swoosh, there is a phrase written in orange capital letters, save for the final word, written in blue: "A man will be defined by the condition of his heart."

The shoes, and particularly that phrase, encapsulate Elliott's path to Charlottesville: That of a biracial man who grew up in a Black household, graduating college with an engineering degree, switching paths to coaching, becoming the highest paid offensive coordinator in the country and now one of 14 Black FBS head coaches.

The shoes are a vehicle for expression, allowing him to show who he is and what he represents. He calls them an "important part of Black culture," while simultaneously wanting to be viewed as more than what some see first.

"I know that I am a minority," Elliott said. "I just don't want it to be solely about that."

If you’ll just take a deep breath and go along with us on this series you might find a bit of dark humor as we build towards the jubilation of bowl eligibility. I am willing to carry the flag of the brutal season to start off so let’s go.

Louisville Cardinals- Loss (0-1, 0-1)

Syracuse shows off an explosive offense but the young defensive line fails to keep Malik Cunningham in the pocket. Cunningham’s running cause the Orange to devote more attention to him through zone coverage and the Cardinals take advantage. Louisville escapes with a 48-45 win.

at UConn Huskies- Win (1-1, 0-1)

The Orange offense gets rolling on the ground in this one. Robert Anae tries to keep things vanilla and after Sean Tucker heads to the sidelines in the third quarter to rest, LeQuint Allen takes over and records his first 100 yard effort in a blowout win.

Purdue Boilermakers- Loss (1-2, 0-1)

It’s another shootout in the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse looks to be in good position to hold on but a 4th-quarter punt is shanked and Purdue takes advantage of a short field to score late and win 41-37.

Virginia Cavaliers- Loss (1-3, 0-2)

Brennan Armstrong shows the world that he doesn’t need the Anae/Beck combination to succeed. He connects with Dontayvion Wicks against Syracuse safeties as fans scream for Garrett Williams to shadow Wicks all over the field. The only positive is that the 53-49 score is higher than the Syracuse-Virginia basketball game.

Wagner Seahawks - Win (2-3, 0-2)

Fans get their wish and we see Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and while he’s dominating the FCS Seahawks we start to see more #SitShrader comments in the game thread and Twitter mentions.

Bye U- No Contest

Tucker among those named to AP preseason All-America team (PS; AP)

Alabama stars Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. are among four players from the top-ranked Crimson Tide selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team.

Joining Young, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, and Anderson, the star pass rusher, were Alabama defensive backs Jordan Battle and Eli Ricks as first-team selections.

Syracuse running back Sean Tucker was named to the second team.

The AP preseason All-America team was selected by a panel of Top 25 poll voters and released Monday. Syracuse.com’s Nate Mink was among the voters who cast a ballot for the All-America team.

Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs made the second team as an all-purpose player and Crimson Tide guard Emil Ekiyor was also a second-team selection.

Alabama’s four first-teamers and six players on the two teams overall were the most for any school.

Ohio State was second behind Alabama, just like in the AP Top 25, with three first-team selections and five players overall.

Offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., running back TreVeyon Henderson and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba were all selected to the first team. C.J. Stroud, who finished fourth in the Heisman voting last year, is the second-team quarterback. Tackle Dawand Jones made the second-team offensive line.

Syracuse football: What are the biggest questions facing the Orange as the season approaches? (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange football team held another scrimmage on Saturday but we can only speculate on what happened behind closed doors. With the final week of camp starting let’s look at some of the biggest questions remaining for the Orange

Can the “pups” guard the house?

Dino Babers said his defensive line might “run around like young puppies” and after missing out on any transfers, these young players will have to deliver. The 3-3-5 doesn’t require them to compile big numbers of tackles but the group must stay disciplined against dual-threat quarterbacks. If this group can play assignment football and leave the Syracuse linebackers free to make plays, the Syracuse defense can improve on last year’s numbers.

Back to #PunterU?

Last year the Syracuse special teams was pretty bad. One of the biggest issues was the punting unit as James Williams, Ian Hawkins and Colby Barker averaged under 40 yards a kick. A team that plays inside a Dome cannot afford to trot out an unreliable unit when they need to flip the field. Max von Marburg has been added from Australia and we’ll see if it’s him or one of the returners who win the job. Syracuse’s depth should allow for better kick coverage but the punters need to flip the field when called upon.

One stat that can’t be overlooked in Syracuse’s 5-7 season was the difference in red-zone efficiency. The Orange offense converted on 26 of 34 attempts (76.47%) while their opponents were 40 for 46 (86.96%) in the red zone. One way to turn those close losses into wins is to convert when given those opportunities and find a way to stop your opponent. If Syracuse can’t improve in this area in 2022, they are going to find it hard to get back to the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

What are some areas your concerned about heading into the season?

A 3-star DE recruit from Maryland includes SU football in his Top 6 (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football is in the Top 6 for Maryland three-star defensive lineman Nnamdi Udeogu, the player announced Saturday via his Twitter.

The Orange offered Udeogu on Aug. 18. His other top programs are Penn, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Princeton and Yale. He currently has 28 total offers and made official visits with the Commodores and Scarlet Knights in June.

As of Monday afternoon, Udeogu had not announced a date for his commitment.

Since playing football the last year of my life, I have been blessed with opportunities on opportunities. I will be focusing on these 6 schools leading up to my commitment‼️ pic.twitter.com/PTqFNelOez
— Nnamdi Udeogu (@nnamdi_udeogu) August 20, 2022

The 6-foot-5, 228-pounder is the No. 15 player in Maryland and the No. 75 edge rusher in the nation, according to 247Sports. He plays for Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland. Udeogu lists himself as both a defensive end and tight end in his Twitter bio.

He had 21.5 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2021, according to his Hudl highlights. Georgetown finished 6-3 overall and went undefeated in conference play last season.

ACC Football: Preview and Predictions for 2022 Season (bleacherreport.com; Escarpio)
  • The ACC is headlined by exceptional quarterbacks and stars on the defensive line, making the conference one of the most unpredictable in college football.
There's been a recent cloud over the ACC with rumors surrounding conference realignment, so 2022 should give the college football world a sense of where they stand.
The Clemson Tigers may be the favorite to win the ACC, but teams like the North Carolina State Wolfpack and Miami Hurricanes aren't too far behind. The conference will come down to consistent quarterback play and dominance in the trenches.
The Coastal Division spotlights the possible revival of Miami and the questions surrounding Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Meanwhile, the Atlantic Division seems to be a crowded party, with the Tigers and Wolfpack leading the way

    Biggest Stars

    Devin Leary
Devin Leary should be considered the best quarterback in the conference. The redshirt junior had a monster season for NC State in 2021, quickly becoming one of the nation's top quarterbacks in 2021.
In his third year with the program, Leary completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 35 touchdowns and 3,433 yards. He rarely makes mistakes, throwing just five picks last season and holding a career 51-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
With a team of seasoned veterans and the addition of wide receiver Darryl Jones, NC State's offense should be exceptional yet again. Leary has only gotten smarter, stronger and more efficient in his time with the Wolfpack, so 2022 seems to be another monumental step in his growing career.
    Myles Murphy
One of the ACC's most intriguing names is Clemson Tigers defensive end Myles Murphy. The projected first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft has been bombarded with preseason watch lists and hype throughout the offseason from nearly every analyst and major news site.
Murphy finished the 2021 season with two forced fumbles, two passes defended, eight sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. With the help of a dominant interior line, Murphy can quickly help his draft stock rise and push his team toward competing for an ACC championship.
There's been uncertainty surrounding Clemson's offense throughout the offseason, so a top-tier defense will be vital for the Tigers to climb back on top of the conference.
    Josh Downs
UNC wide receiver Josh Downs is a player you cancel plans and start heating up the popcorn for. The former 4-star prospect has cemented his name as one of the best receivers in the ACC after recording eight touchdowns and 1,335 yards on 101 receptions last season.
Although Wake Forest receiver A.T. Perry could have gotten the nod here with a healthy Sam Hartman, Downs is an explosive playmaker ready for the bright lights.
The 5'10" athlete will be playing with a different quarterback in 2022, but the Tar Heels offense seems to hinge on the success of Downs and wide receiver Antoine Green. Downs should be in the Biletnikoff Award discussion by season's end.
Honorable Mentions: Bryan Bresee, Sean Tucker

2022 Syracuse FB Preview (RX; HM)

2022 Syracuse FB Preview
In some important ways, it feels like a new beginning in Syracuse:
ome, with a new name.

  • New offensive coordinator.
  • The JMA Wireless Dome is fixin' to get LIT!

Good News: Syracuse has one of the best running backs in the ACC, if not the country. They are also the only P5 team that plays in a dome, which you figure has to come into play at some point, right?
Bad News: Dino Babers was brought in after "hard-nosed" Scott Schafer to fix the offense. Other than the 2018 season (in which Eric Dungey played a lot of "chuck & duck"), can you really say the offense was ever fixed?

The 2022 Season Prognosis:

Louisville at Syracuse is a virtual toss-up that both teams really want and need to win. After that, the Orange travel to UConn to play the Huskies before returning home for an a tough match-up with Purdue. After the Boilermakers, the Orange stay home to host the Virginia Cavaliers and the Wagner Seahawks before taking their bye week. The problem is, I don't see any easy games after Wagner. So my prognosis for Syracuse is to start looking for a new head football coach now, to avoid the rush!

2022 Free TV Games (RX; HM)

2022 Free TV Games

A few years ago we looked at which games you could watch for free in "The $0 TV Option". That was before the ACC Network - which is definitely not free. So the question is, in 2022, which games are still free to watch? Not as many, but some (and thank goodness for that ACC/Notre Dame contract, which ensures at least 2 games each year end up on NBC!).

Here's a list of all known over-the-air (ad-supported) broadcast games for the 2022 season (more will be added as the season progresses), with ACC games in bold blue and Notre Dame games in bold gold:

What Makes a Brand - Weeks in Top 25 (RX; HM)

What Makes a Brand - Weeks in Top 25

What makes a college football program a "brand"?

This was posted on CSNBBS by 'NoQuarterBrigade' back in July:

Other than winning championships, I think another good statistic to look at would be total weeks ranked in the top 25. The AP poll would be good to look at here since it has been used for so long. It would clearly show who the top brands are in college football. The more a school gets ranked, the more it gets recognized. It goes a long way in my opinion.

2022 ACC Hot Seat Coaches (RX; HM)

2022 ACC Hot Seat Coaches

From Sporting News' "College football hot seats 2022: Six coaches who are under pressure to win this season", here are the ACC coaches (click the link to read about the rest), along with a few comments of my own...

Mike Norvell, Florida State

State of the program:
Florida State has been in decline since Jimbo Fisher had one foot out the door in 2017. Four straight losing seasons — two with Willie Taggart, two with Norvell — have veteran college football fans struggling to believe the state of affairs in Tallahassee. The Seminoles aren’t projected to be much better than a middle-of-the-pack ACC team this year.
Season-opener: vs. Duquense, Saturday, Aug. 27
A Week Zero tune-up for a big showdown against LSU should give the Seminoles an advantage before their standalone game on Labor Day weekend. It will be hard to gauge much from this game. The Dukes went 7-3 out of the FCS Northeast Conference last season and lost to TCU 45-3, their only FBS opponent.
How the seat can cool: Beat LSU in Game 2. A big, national spotlight win would do wonders for a program looking for momentum. A loss, coupled with Jackson State and Deion Sanders winning big on national TV in the lead-up to the game, would ignite even more “Deion-to-FSU” talk. Florida State is a 3-point underdog, then doesn’t play another ranked opponent until Oct. 8. If FSU can get off to a hot start, 8-4 should be enough for Norvell to return for Year 4.
A new coach will be in place if: LSU wins comfortably, and the team never finds its footing against the bigger name teams on its schedule — N.C. State, Clemson, Miami, Florida. A bowl bid at 6-6 will likely not be enough.
COMMENT: I whole-heartedly agree that the best thing Mike Norvell can do for his job security would be to beat LSU in New Orleans. The worst thing he could do would be to lose to Duquesne (do that and he might not get to coach against LSU). - Hokie Mark

Geoff Collins, Georgia Tech

State of the program:
The transition from the triple-option offense was never going to be easy, and critics seemed to understand that when Tech went 3-9 in Collins’ first season. Year 2 was the pandemic season, which again was going to delay progress. But when the Jackets limped to a 3-9 season last year, suddenly Collins’ three-year record was consistently trotted out despite the early obstacles. Unfortunately, this year’s roster has holes, and the schedule has two ranked non-conference opponents from the SEC and three ranked teams in the ACC.
Season-opener: vs. No. 4 Clemson at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Monday, Sep. 5
Georgia Tech lost 14-8 last season at Clemson, as the Tigers denied GT twice inside the 10-yard line in the final two minutes. The biggest concern for Georgia Tech will be its offensive line handling what figures to be a dominating defensive front. The Tigers are 21-point favorites.
How the seat can cool: A similar effort to last year’s close call against Clemson would at least give hope to the fan base. Collins praised new quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke for his work with Jeff Sims, who will need a big season in Chip Long’s new offense after the transfer of star running back Jahmyr Gibbs to Alabama.
A new coach will be in place if: Georgia Tech wins fewer than five games and is non-competitive against heavyweights Clemson and Georgia.
COMMENT: Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Collins must start turning some of those good "effort" games into wins, or he's toast. I disagree about how his seat can cool; beat Ole Miss and that alone might buy another season. - Hokie Mark

Dino Babers, Syracuse

State of the program:
Syracuse has won more than seven regular-season games once in 20 years and is coming off three straight losing seasons. Babers has one shining season — a 10-3 mark in 2018, but his overall record in orange is 29-42. This year’s team is experienced and includes an All-ACC back in Sean Tucker, but includes non-conference challenges against Notre Dame and Purdue.

Equitable is cutting its office space in half at its namesake Equitable Towers in downtown Syracuse. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Downtown Syracuse employer gets tax break for office upgrade (PS; $; Moriarty)

The Syracuse Industrial Development Agency has approved a $366,608 tax break for a major downtown employer’s office upgrades.

The agency voted last Aug. 16 to exempt from sales taxes $4.7 million in furniture and fixtures and equipment related to Equitable’s office upgrades at the twin towers that bear its name on Madison Street. The break will save the life insurance company $366,608.

Equitable is planning to consolidate its offices in the towers onto two floors and return space it formerly occupied on six other floors to the building’s owner.

The move will reduce Equitable’s footprint in the towers from about 300,000 square feet to 143,564 square feet, according to city officials.

However, the company has at the same time pledged to the state that it will keep at least 740 jobs at its Syracuse office. It made that pledge in exchange for a $9 million state grant toward $65 million in upgrades to its offices in Equitable Towers. They are the same upgrades for which the city’s development agency granted the sales tax exemption.
