Welcome to International Chocolate Day!

International Chocolate Day celebrates chocolate, the sweet treat that is made from the cocoa bean. The National Confectioners Association lists the day as being celebrated on September 13, which fittingly happens to be the birthday of Milton S. Hershey, the founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company.

Chocolate comes from a bean called Theobroma cacao. The word "chocolate" itself comes from the Spanish, and it stems from the Aztec word xocolatl, which means "bitter water". The Aztecs pounded the cacao beans and drank them without adding any sugar, and they thought the beans came from the gods. Indeed, Theobroma means "food of the gods". Cocoa beans are about 50% "cocoa butter" and 50% "chocolate liquor". Hernando Cortés brought cocoa beans back to Spain, and a chocolate drink that included sugar became popular right away. The word "chocolate" first appeared in print, in England, in 1604.

What’s college football saying about Syracuse after week 2? (TNIAAM; Wall)

Each week, we’ll take a look at what other college football media sites are saying about the Syracuse Orange. It should be more of those good vibes after the Orange knocked off the UConn Huskies.

Awards

Once again Garrett Shrader makes the PFF Team of the Week and look at why:

Shrader completed eight of his nine throws over 10 yards downfield for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
The dynamic athlete recorded two designed rushing touchdowns, bringing his two-year total with Syracuse to 15.
When free from pressure, he went a perfect 16-of-16 for 237 yards and three scores against the Huskies.
If he can stay anywhere near these performances, Syracuse is going to be tough to stop.

ESPN

In this week’s SP+ rankings Syracuse moves up three to the 54th spot with the offense 60th while the defense ranks 49th. The Orange are ranked between UAB and Louisville. This week’s opponent the Purdue Boilermakers rank 29th with their offense 34th and defense 27th.

Purdue Football Game Notes - Week 3 at Syracuse (PDF) - Purdue Boilermakers (purduesports.com)

Game notes Purdue vs Syracuse Week 3 2022

Takeaways from UConn football’s tough loss vs. Syracuse (theuconnblog.com; Swanson)

UConn football’s 48-14 drubbing at the hands of Syracuse was a sobering reminder that head coach Jim Mora still has a large program-building effort ahead of him.

Syracuse has looked like a confident team bound for a bowl bid in the first two weeks of the season, but the ease with which they moved the ball on the UConn defense and how equally simple it was to disrupt UConn’s offensive gameplan put this one out of the Huskies’ reach from the start.

But despite the lopsided final score, there are still plenty of lessons that UConn football can learn from how the game played out.

Back to old habits

Swanson:
After holding CCSU to just three points in the second week of the season, the UConn defense was porous on Saturday night against Syracuse.

Syracuse had an average rushing performance but took special advantage of an extremely weak UConn secondary. Garrett Schrader averaged 10.9 yards per pass attempt, over a first down per dropback. The defensive backs struggled in both man and zone coverage, and the defensive line failed to generate any meaningful pass rush on the quarterback.

Syracuse Football: Players receive high grades in week-two road triumph (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football totally dominated UConn in virtually every phase of the game as the Orange destroyed the Huskies on the road in week two on Saturday evening.

The ‘Cuse (2-0), in my humble opinion, was never greatly tested by Connecticut (1-2) in a 48-14 blow-out victory for Syracuse football. Granted, UConn doesn’t appear to be a good squad in 2022, at least so far, but any time the Orange can grab a conquest away from the Hill, it’s a positive in my book.

From my perspective, there is a lot to like about what Syracuse football did to the Huskies over the weekend, and we’re going to take a deeper look at all phases of this non-conference clash.

Let’s give out player grades for Syracuse football in the Orange’s beat-down of UConn.

Quarterback: A+
Without question, quarterback Garrett Shrader was the MVP of this win for the ‘Cuse. Against Connecticut, he was highly efficient in connecting on 20-of-23 for 287 yards and three passing touchdowns. He also had two rushing scores. That’s five total TDs. You can’t ask for anything more from the QB position.

The 2022 stanza is in its early stages, but Shrader looks like a completely different quarterback when throwing the ball, and his new assistant coaches from Virginia certainly have something to do with Shrader’s turnaround from a term ago.

What Jeff Brohm Said Ahead of Purdue Football's Upcoming Road Matchup With Syracuse (SI; Fezler)

After a one-sided 56-0 win over Indiana State, Purdue football gears up for its first road matchup of the season. The team will take on Syracuse on Saturday for the second of three straight nonconference games.

Head coach Jeff Brohm met with the media on Monday to give his final thoughts on the Boilermakers' win against the Sycamores and discuss the team's focus heading into another week of practices.

Here's everything he had to say, including the full video from the press conference attached below:

Jeff Brohm Monday Press Conference

Opening Statement

JEFF BROHM:
Well, we've got our first road game. It's going to be a tough opponent in Syracuse, who's playing very, very well. I think that right now, they're playing very good complementary football. Defense is playing at a high level. Offense is being very efficient, scoring points, taking care of the ball, creating big plays, not beating themselves, and that equals wins.

Notre Dame, SU's Week 9 opponent, has lost its starting QB for the season (PS; AP)

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will require surgery.

Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall over the weekend and was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday.

“The expected recovery time is about four months,” Freeman said. “We can all do that math. That probably puts us somewhere in mid-January.”

Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart for this Saturday’s home game against California. Against Marshall, he went 3-for-6 with a touchdown pass and an interception.

Notre Dame and Syracuse are scheduled to play Oct. 29 in the JMA Wireless Dome, the Irish’s first visit to Syracuse since 2003.

In August, Pyne entered training camp competing for the starting quarterback position but lost the job to Buchner after practice No. 7.

“As I said when we addressed the quarterback competition in fall camp, I had the utmost confidence in both of those guys to be able to lead our offense and lead our football team,” Freeman said. “We are still very positive and optimistic about our future moving forward.”

Purdue vs. Syracuse: How to watch Week 3 matchup (hammerandnails.com; Holder)

Purdue travels to the great state of New York to play Syracuse. This will be only the 2nd time the two teams have met, with Purdue winning the only matchup 54 to 0 in 2004.

Cuse looks much improved under 7th year head coach, Dino Babers, who has had up and down seasons during his tenure with Cuse.

Syracuse returns 3rd year back, Sean Tucker who in 2021 had nearly 1,500 yards. Tucker has 210 yards through the first two games, in which both were blowouts. Quarterback Garrett Shrader has been a surprise for the Orange, through two games he is completing 79% of his passes for 524 yards and 5 touchdowns, while also not having any turnovers.

This game in the off season looked like it should be a “win”, but, it will be a dog fight, I assure you that.

As it stands now, Purdue is a 1 point favorite at Syracuse. You can find all the best odds, boosts, same game parlays, etc on DraftKings.com. I would consider putting a bet in early in the week if you like Purdue at -1, before the line changes.

Shrader again earns PFF honors after making ‘NFL’ throws at UConn (PS; Leiker)

Despite all the deserved hype around Syracuse football running back Sean Tucker this preseason, it’s been quarterback Garrett Shrader in the spotlight through the opening two weeks of the season.

Shrader, who led his team to a 48-14 win over Connecticut on Saturday, was named the Pro Football Focus Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. It’s the second-straight week he’s been tabbed as such, and coming out of Week 2 he’s the only ACC player to make the PFF Team of the Week.

Against the Huskies, Shrader threw for a career-high 292 yards and three touchdowns on 20 completions. He’s already up to 528 passing yards and five passing touchdowns this season, meaning he’s well on his way to surpassing last year’s totals of 1,445 yards and nine touchdowns through the air.

Shrader’s PFF overall grade for Week 2 was 94.5. It’s the best of his career and pushes him closer to top-graded James Madison University QB Todd Centeio in all of the FBS.

After receiving the top grade among Power 5 quarterbacks in Week 1, Shrader said he heard the news but didn’t actually see it himself. He quickly attributed his success to his coaches and moved on from talking about the recognition.

Shrader is No. 4 in passing efficiency, according to the NCAA. Just 10 of his 48 passing attempts have fallen incomplete.

Syracuse football: Orange tweak depth chart for matchup with Purdue (TNIAAM; Haller)

It’s always good when you can take care of business. The Syracuse Orange did just that against the Connecticut Huskies this weekend in the first road test of the year, walking away from Storrs with the victory and moving to 2-0 on the season. With the first road game of the year you get the first travel roster of the year and that’s basically what we’re seeing on this week’s depth chart.

Lot of what we saw last week on the depth chart this week. Reflects the travel roster for the OL and Linton jumps into the mix at DE pic.twitter.com/8JBq718vYb
— Steve Haller (@DutchHart) September 12, 2022

From the offensive line standpoint there were a lot of moves in the two-deep, with redshirt frosh Joe Cruz taking the backup left tackle role, moving Enrique Cruz as the backup right tackle. Anthony Red didn’t travel on the week for unknown reasons. With Wes Hoeh becoming a tight end (totally normal and expected), Mark Petry has joined the two deep at backup guard.

ACC Football Power Rankings: Week Three - Sports Illustrated Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets News, Analysis and More (SI; Caudell)

Week two did not see a lot of movement in the ACC. The top teams, Clemson, Miami, and NC State all won, but Pittsburgh went down in overtime to Tennessee in their big matchup of the week.

Sam Hartman returned for Wake Forest and led the Demon Deacons to a win. Malik Cunningham bounced back and got a road win against UCF. Duke looks much improved after beating Northwestern as an underdog this week.

So who moved up and who moved down in the ACC power rankings after week two? Let's find out.

14. Georgia Tech (1-1, W vs Western Carolina 35-17)- Last week: 13

Georgia Tech was able to pull out a win against Western Carolina, but that is not going to keep them from dropping to last in this week's power rankings. With Duke getting a win over Northwestern, the Yellow Jackets will have to occupy the last spot. Ole Miss is on deck for this Saturday at 3:30

13. Boston College (0-2, L vs Virginia Tech 27-10)- Last week: 11

The Eagles take another drop in this week's ranking after losing to Virginia Tech 27-10. The Eagles thought they were going to take a step further this year under Jeff Hafley, but the offense has been a struggle so far through two games and they could not run the ball against the Hokies. BC should get a win over Maine but there is a chance this team is going to miss a bowl game entirely.

12. Virginia (1-1, L vs Illinois 24-3)- Last week: 10

After beating Richmond in week three, Virginia took a loss on the road to Illinois and the team struggled to do anything offensively. Brennan Armstrong was only 13/32 for 180 yards and the running game was terrible. The Cavaliers play Old Dominion this week and that is anything but an easy win.

11. Duke (2-0, W vs Northwestern 31-23)- Last week: 14

Duke moves from last place in the rankings up to 11 and there is a decent chance that this team is 4-0 after games against NC A&T and Kansas. Running back Jordan Waters had 91 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday and the offense did enough to win the game. Head coach Mike Elko has done a solid job and the Blue Devils will look to keep winning in the coming weeks.

10. Virginia Tech- (1-1, W vs Boston College 27-10)- Last week: 12

The Hokies bounced back from their loss to Old Dominion and got a conference win over Boston College. The defense limited the Eagles to 155 total yards and the offense did just enough to win. This team still has a lot of questions, but it is always good to get a conference win at home. Virginia Tech should be 2-1 after playing Wofford this week.

9. Louisville- (1-1, W vs UCF 20-14)- Last week: 9

The Cardinals did get a win over UCF, but don't move up any this week because of the teams in front of them taking care of business. Quarterback Malik Cunningham got the team the win over the Knights and the defense was good enough. Louisville has another big matchup on a Friday night when they face Florida State this week.

8. Syracuse- (2-0, W vs UConn 48-14)- Last week: 8

Syracuse got another win this week against an overmatched UConn team and this team is looking pretty good through two weeks. Quarterback Garrett Shrader is commanding the offense and the defense remains good. A tricky home game against Purdue awaits next week.

Biggest risers: Kentucky up 11; BYU, Tennessee, and UNC all up 9.

Kentucky beat Florida; BYU beat Baylor; Tennessee beat Pitt; UNC managed to get to 3-0 while beating the team that beat Texas A&M last week.

So far this year, when SEC teams win, they've risen an average of 7.88 spots! When ACC teams win, they've only risen an average of 3 spots.

Who has the CFB Belt as of 2022 Sep 12th? (RX; HM)

Who has the CFB Belt as of 2022 Sep 12th?

Where is the belt? That story is more interesting than it's been in quite some time...

Alabama held it (and the national championship) going into the 2021 season, but the Tide lost it to Texas AM on October 9th [LINK]. Since then it has changed hands three more times:

November 13th, 2021 - Texas A&M lost it to Ole Miss
January 1st, 2022 - Ole Miss lost to Baylor (Sugar Bowl)
September 10, 2022 - Baylor lost to Brigham Young

So not only has the belt been separated (a) from the crystal football and (b) from the SEC, but it's even been removed from (c) the power five altogether. Of course, with BYU joining the Big XII next year, Baylor may have a shot at winning it back - IF the Cougars can hang on to it that long, that is. There remain some very challenging games on BYU's 2022 schedule:

2022 BYU Football Schedule

Saturday, Sep. 3rd at USF Bulls (W 50-21)
Saturday, Sep. 10th #9 Baylor Bears (W 26-20,2OT)
Saturday, Sep. 17th at #25 Oregon Ducks

Is Mario Cristobal as Good as the Hype? (RX; HM)

Is Mario Cristobal as Good as the Hype?

From the email of "bill Dooley": is Miami "back"? is Mario Cristobal the Mack Brown 2.0?

Part 1: Does “Any college football team’s success start and ends with recruiting”?
Sounds like a good theory. But when we examine 2 teams - Texas and Miami - we see that they are “poster children” for doing less with more (i.e. 5 or 6 losses despite top-rated recruiting classes).
————————————————
Part 2: But Are They Really “Back?”

Miami... once a juggernaut program in the early 2000's has been a shell since joining the ACC in 2004. They’ve averaged five losses a year from 2004-2021 and have a 3-11 bowl record in that span... a far cry from a program that put an insane amount of talent into the NFL from those early 2000s teams and won 5 national championships in 19 years.

The Marshall Thundering Herd will play at the NC State Wolfpack in 2023, according to a report by the Herald-Dispatch. Marshall had a vacancy after Navy backed out of their game scheduled for Sept. 2nd at Marshall. The NC State Wolfpack had an opening due to the recent cancellation by Cincinnati. Marshall and NC State will play at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC next season, but the exact date for the game was not revealed yet.
I guess the Wolfpack are going to try to accomplish next year what Notre Dame couldn't do this year. Speaking of the Fighting [but so far not winning] Irish...

Northern Lights Plaza has been part of the Syracuse area's retail scene since 1956. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

https://www.syracuse.com/business/2...-hit-hard-times-but-owner-isnt-giving-up.html (PS; $; Moriarty)

An iconic shopping center that’s been part of the Central New York retail scene for almost 70 years has fallen on tough times.

During the past decade, Northern Lights has lost two of its large tenants and, so far, hasn’t been able to fill the vacant spaces. Like the strip center, the marquee advertising its stores has loads of empty spaces, a far cry for a shopping center that was one of the earliest destinations for suburban shoppers in Onondaga County.

The center has held onto a stable of long-time tenants in recent years, including the Christmas Tree Shops, Olum’s Furniture, Petco, Party City, Paladino’s Pizza and Flaming Grill & Buffet, as well as a U.S. Army recruiting office and Syracuse Hemporium.

Yet the shopping center that opened in 1956 remains more than half empty, even though on average 102,000 vehicles pass by it each day on Route 11 and Interstate 81. Many incoming flights to Syracuse pass over it, close enough to read some of the store’s signs.

Barstool’s David Portnoy took a very public shot at the plaza recently when he went there for one of his famous one-bite pizza reviews.

During his instant video review in front of Paladino’s on July 29, Portnoy paused to express his thoughts on the plaza itself.

“I’ve never been upstate like here, so we’re gonna see how it goes,” said the internet celebrity, who has 2.7 million Twitter followers. “This place, by the way, is one of the worst strip malls like I’ve been in a long time. It’s just disgusting.”
