Third Down Conversions Have Been Key to Syracuse's Offensive Resurgence (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football is averaging nearly 40 points per game and has been one of the more efficient offenses in the ACC through two weeks of action. The improvement of quarterback Garrett Shrader has been a key element to that production, as has the play of the offensive line. All of that has led to improvement in one key area that has allowed the Orange to put up points in the first two games of the season. Third down conversions.

Thus far in 2022, Syracuse is converting 54.6% of its third downs. That is good for 19th in the country and fourth in the ACC. An impressive statistic in its own right that becomes even more impressive when you compare it to the Orange's futility in 2021.

Syracuse converted 32.9% of its third downs last season, which was last in the ACC and outside of the top 100 nationally. The inability to sustain drives directly impacts the ability to score. It sounds simplistic, and it is, but it is also reality.

In the opening drive against UConn, Syracuse converted three third downs on its way to a touchdown. Against Louisville, the Orange had multiple touchdown drives that featured at least one third down conversion.

All Syracuse Q&A: Breaking Down Purdue Football's Week 3 Opponent (SI; Fezler)

Ahead of Purdue football's upcoming matchup with Syracuse, Boilermakers Country caught up with Josh Crawford of All Syracuse to find out more about the Orange.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue football is gearing up for its first road matchup of the season this upcoming week, where the team will play Syracuse inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Saturday.
Ahead of the game, we caught up with FanNation reporter Josh Crawford with All Syracuse for a Q&A to get some insight on the Orange. Here's everything he had to say about the Boilermakers' next opponent:
Q: Syracuse running back Sean Tucker leads the team in both rushing yards and receiving yards through the first two games of the season, what is it about his skillset and the Orange offense that allows him to be such a dynamic, dual-threat player?
Tucker’s ability to make an impact as a receiver has been one of the main storylines in fall camp and throughout the regular season for this Cuse team. Babers and this offensive staff knew that defenses would load the box this year to stop #34, and figured that moving him around would be the most effective to maximize his production.

As for Tucker, he’s a back with elite speed and quickness (he sprinted for Syracuse’s track team last spring) to erase angles and consistently make a man miss in the box, but combines that with a compact and muscular frame at 5’9, 210 pounds that provides him with impressive power and contact balance to break arm tackles and be a problem between the tackles.

Behind Enemy Lines: Purdue Boilermakers (SI; Crawford)

All Syracuse caught up with Boilermakers Country's DJ Fezler to get the inside scoop on Purdue ahead of Saturday's matchup.

Q: Most SU (and Big Ten) fans are familiar with Aidan O’Connell and the exploits of this Purdue passing attack. What are some other areas of strength where Purdue could potentially exploit the Orange?

Fezler: While the offense usually takes the spotlight for Purdue football, the team has a veteran secondary that has fueled a fast start on the defensive side of the ball through two games. The Boilermakers are one of just three teams in the country with multiple interceptions returned for touchdowns this season. Against Penn State, fifth-year safety Chris Jefferson brought back an interception 72 yards for a score in the fourth quarter and senior safety Cam Allen also tallied a pick-six that went for 65 yards this past weekend against Indiana State. So far, the Purdue defense has registered four takeaways while keeping its opponents scoreless in six out of eight quarters.

Q: Garrett Shrader has arguably been the best QB in college football since the season started. Who are some potential Purdue defensive game-wreckers and what type of things will the Boilermakers have to do to slow Shrader down?

Fezler: There's no doubt that Shrader has been exceptional for Syracuse to start the season, and it will be imperative for Purdue to disrupt his timing and create pressure up front with the defensive line. The team has deployed a deep rotation of defensive linemen but is still looking for someone to emerge after losing star pass rusher George Karlaftis to the NFL. Redshirt senior defensive tackle Branson Deen, who was often overlooked for his size at the position, is the leader up front and has a high motor. Deen has a sack and two quarterback hits so far this season and will look to add to those numbers when Shrader drops back to pass. The Boilermakers will need several players to step up and generate pressure, forcing Shrader into rare mistakes in order to get the ball back to Aidan O'Connell and the offense.

Syracuse football: Dino Babers’ Purdue week preview (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2018, and they’re now home for over a month. Coach Babers kicked-off the extended home stand with his weekly press conference. Here’s what he had to say about the first of four straight visiting opponents: the Purdue Boilermakers.

Head-to-Head (Coaching) History

Babers and Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm have faced each other before - back when both were at their previous schools. Babers was coaching at Bowling Green while Brohm led the Western Kentucky football program. Dino’s Falcons split the 2014-2015 matchups with Jeff’s Hilltoppers before the former was hired by SU.

“He’s a fabulous coach,” Babers said. “He’s done some amazing things at Purdue. They have an outstanding defense... and as always, a quarterback that is just through the roof.”

Quarterback Praise

That first quote wasn’t the only complement Babers dished out for Purdue’s sixth-year QB Aidan O’Connell.

“This guy, he just doesn’t make mistakes,” Babers said. “It’s like you’re playing a coach that can actually throw the football.”
“The last time I saw someone accurate like that, he got drafted by the Patriots.
Now before anyone jumps the gun: no, he isn’t talking about Tom Brady. At least probably not. There’s a good chance that Dino was referring to Jimmy Garoppolo, who he coached at Eastern Illinois. You can look at a comparison of the two below, specifically their stance and hand placement.

Jeff Brohm Syracuse Game Week Press Conference (hammerandnails.com; Heroes)

After a beatdown of epic proportions against Indiana State Purdue is now in preparation for their next game against Syracuse. So, Jeff Brohm stepped up to his contractually obligated press conference yesterday and faced the media. Here is just a sampling of what he said. If you’re so inclined you can read the whole transcript.

On the chemistry between AOC and Chuck Sizzle:

Well, I think those two have proven that they can make big plays. They are a big part of the offense. Just being consistent all year is going to be the key for them, and staying healthy.
You know, I think in order for us to continue to improve we got to get more and more guys involved and make sure that numerous guys can step up and make plays in key situations.
You’d love for another receiver to break through in a game and have over 100 yards receiving or something similar to that. I think they’re working hard, so we just got to continue to work through it and get guys as healthy as we can and go out there and try to help them make more plays.

On the D-line getting into the backfield and making plays:

Well, we got to continue to work through that. I think Branson Deen has the most experience. Had a pretty good game the last game, so he’s got to continue to make plays for us.
Jack Sullivan was able to make some plays as well. Kydran Jenkins has been a strong point to our defense. He is solid on the weak side of the defensive line, so any time he can create some big plays will help.
And then I think Scotty Humpich, probably wasn’t his best game the last game, but he has shown signs. He needs to emerge as a playmaker for us.
Then Nic Caraway, a bright young prospect. I think just the more he understands and plays the better he can be.

Injury updates to Broc Thompson and Mershawn Rice:

I think the status of those guys are about the same. Broc is going to be somebody we’ll have to manage all year and hope that he gets healthy.
He did the first game, kind of, you know, reinjured his knee a little bit, and that’s what he worked through. Wasn’t able to really go the last game. Played a few plays and had to take himself out.
Hopefully that can get better this week. You know, Mershawn Rice is getting healthier and he was able to play, and Semisi, we’ll see. Won’t be able to tell that until later in the week.

How does Purdue replace Jalen Graham:

Well, that’s the challenge we have right now. Jalen is a big part of defense. Done a great job for us. Probably our most valuable player on that side of the ball.
You’re able to kind of play a lot of different personnel sets with him in there because he’s a big athletic body that can play the run and the pass.
So right now we don’t quite have that type of body, so we’ve got to have a couple different ways to use that position versus teams that spread it out, versus certain personnels that mostly like we throw the ball.
Which I think we have some okay answers for that that I think will help us and get better that we were able to use in the last game. Now when we face running sets in personnels and have to get bigger, that’s where we have to have a good plan to — whether it’s moving Jacob Wahlberg over to that the Sam position, possibly Ben Kreul, or even Semisi if he’s healthy.
Right now just getting him back healthy will probably eliminate him from at that position.
That’s going to be the key, clogging things up in the run game with a bigger body.

Purdue vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Teams are hitting their passes against the Syracuse secondary.

There might not be a ton of production, but the midrange throws have been there for the taking with Louisville and UConn combining to connect on 79% of their passes.

Welcome to Purdue.

Aidan O’Connell and the Boilermakers tuned-it up last week with a nearly perfect performance in the 56-0 scrimmage against Indiana State. The passing game wasn’t sharp against Penn State, but it went for 365 yards. Now, if O’Connell can be consistent on the short throws and the offense can control third downs, it’ll keep the Orange O on the sidelines.

Time of possession will matter here. Syracuse is dominating the clock so far, and Purdue has no problem playing that game.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Syracuse Will Win

Check out the new look Syracuse offense that’s throwing the ball now.

RB Sean Tucker is still the star, but Garrett Shrader has been terrific hitting 79% of his passes for 529 yards and five scores in easy wins over Louisville and UConn.

Penn State’s Sean Clifford didn’t exactly carve up the Boilermaker secondary, but he came up big when he needed to – he finished with over 300 yards and four scores.

The Orange are balanced now, they have yet to turn the ball over, and they should be able to generate enough of a pass rush to at least bother O’Connell.

What’s Going To Happen

Really, how good is Syracuse?

The Louisville game was a stunner, and UConn is UConn. This is going to be the better indicator.

Purdue will get enough out of the run defense to keep Tucker from going off, and Shrader will be pressured just enough to matter.

Syracuse will be the story after its start, but Purdue will come away with a good win in a fun back-and-forth game that will come down to the final few drives.

Surprising Syracuse takes on Purdue’s dynamic duo - National Football Post (NFP; FLM)

After opening the season with back-to-back blowout victories, Syracuse is off to its best start in four years.

The Orange (2-0) hope their momentum continues Saturday afternoon when Purdue (1-1) pays a visit to the newly named JMA Dome.

Syracuse is beginning to resemble the 2018 squad that won its first four games and went on to post a 10-3 record — the only winning record so far in Dino Babers’ six seasons as Orange coach.

The Orange notched a 31-7 victory over Louisville in their season opener and then pounded UConn 48-14.

Garrett Shrader has completed 79.2 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Eleven different Syracuse players have caught a pass, led by dynamic running back Sean Tucker with 10 catches for 101 yards.

“Shrader does a nice job of picking and choosing his targets,” Babers said. “He’s been extremely accurate this year and his throwing percentages have been extremely high.”

While Shrader has spread the ball around, Boilermakers quarterback Aidan O’Connell has continued to show outstanding chemistry with Charlie Jones, who has a national-best 21 catches covering 286 yards and four TDs.

O’Connell and Jones played youth football together and were reunited when Jones transferred in from Iowa. In the 56-0 rout of Indiana State last week, they hooked up nine times for 133 yards and three scores.

“I think those two have proven that they can make big plays,” Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. “They are a big part of the offense. Just being consistent all year is going to be the key for them — and staying healthy.”

Purdue football: 5 keys for beating Syracuse (saturdaytraditions.com; Charters)

Purdue hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Syracuse while looking to jump above .500.

But the Orange will be a challenge, perhaps a bigger one than anticipated after Syracuse has started the season 2-0.

Let’s take a look at 5 keys for the Boilermakers against the Orange:

Stop the run

Couldn’t be more obvious, right?

But for Purdue, the objective takes on a new challenge in coming weeks, as the Boilermakers are without versatile linebacker/safety Jalen Graham, who is out up to a month with a leg injury suffered in Week 1 vs. Penn State. The Boilermakers got by against Indiana State, but that was an FCS program that was overwhelmed at the line of scrimmage.

Syracuse provides a much bigger test. The Orange have rushed a robust 91 times through 2 games, picking up 421 yards and scoring 5 touchdowns. Two players have more than 100 yards, including running back Sean Tucker’s 212 and quarterback Garrett Shrader’s 118.

Graham is Purdue’s best defensive play-maker, so replacing the 6-3, 220-pounder — who has played linebacker, safety and nickel, depending on the situation — will not be easy. Against Indiana State, Purdue inserted Sanoussi Kane in as a starting safety, moving Chris Jefferson down to nickel. But at Syracuse, it’s likely that the Boilermakers will want to play bigger, meaning putting a reserve linebacker on the field, rather than a safety.

https://purdue./news/syracuse-s-dino-babers-traces-coaching-roots-to-purdue (r1vals.com; Dienhart)

Dino Babers will never forget the 1992 Old Oaken Bucket game.

It’s not because Purdue pulled off an exciting win vs. Indiana. It’s because the then Boilermaker receivers coach had become a father for the second time earlier in the day.

“Had my second child (in West Lafayette), my second daughter there,” said Babers, the head coach at Syracuse. “She was born that morning. I ran through the gates right before the kickoff of the game. So, that's one of those memories. To this day, (my daughter is) like, ‘why is my nickname Old Oaken Bucket Head?’ “

Babers laughs while telling the story. He enjoyed his three seasons as an assistant at Purdue, working on Jim Colletto’s first three staffs from 1991-93. Now, Babers is in his seventh season as Syracuse coach. And he’ll face the Boilermakers on Saturday at noon ET on ESPN2 in Syracuse.

This won’t be the first time Babers and Jeff Brohm have faced each other. In 2014, Bowling Green took on Western Kentucky in Bowling Green in the first game for each coach in their new job. Brohm won that day, taking a 59-31 decision.

“We are familiar with each other,” said Babers. “They beat the crap out of us.”

Syracuse football: Heisman bettors are pleased with Sean Tucker’s early-season performance (TNIAAM; OStrowski)

We’ve known for a while that the Syracuse Orange have a star in running back Sean Tucker. The idea of him being in Heisman consideration has been floated around too. It seems like much of the country is starting to take notice - far more than I could’ve ever imagined.

According to a press release from OddsChecker, 50% of Heisman bets placed through their website since Saturday were for Tucker. The site has partnerships with many major sportsbooks including DraftKings . Tucker is currently +15000 to win the Heisman at DraftKings.

Check out this information from OddsChecker spokesman Kyle Newman,

“Sean Tucker has had an impressive start to the season topping 100 rushing yards and scoring a TD in each game. He’s even shown his worth in the pasing game with 84 yards and a score against Louisville. Still, he’s not even among the top-20 in rushing yards in the country. Tucker isn’t even top-10 in the NCAA in All-Purpose yards. There’s a reason that sportsbooks barely see him as a top-10 RB, let alone a Heisman contender. Yet, bettors see a guy just looking to explode.”

Okay... deep breath. First off, I am just as astounded as you. Sure, Sean has been a dark horse candidate, and with good reason: he’s already shattered the single-season rushing record at a school known for producing some of the best running backs of all time. He’s on the verge of passing Ernie Davis on the SU all-time rushing yards list. But for him garner this kind of attention?

The Great Northern Mall was closed on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, because of a power outage. It's just the latest malady to afflict the mall in Clay. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Great Northern Mall update: Developer in talks with 2 big tenants (PS; $; Doran)

Central New York Developer Guy Hart Jr. has big plans for transforming the Great Northern Mall property, and he’s starting by negotiating with two large tenants.

One is a large big-box retailer not currently in Clay, and the other is what he calls would be an “active entertainment” use.

Hart has a contract to buy the troubled Great Northern Mall and has plans to convert it into a “lifestyle center” with luxury apartments and townhomes, a movie theater and hotel, high-end shops and restaurants.

Hart said he sees Great Northern being redeveloped into a pedestrian-friendly lifestyle center with a village center feel to it. It would have high-end retail and grocery stores, he says.

Hart. told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard this week he’s in talks with a large big-box retailer to possibly locate in a more-isolated spot within the back side of the project., behind the mall. He said he can’t reveal who it is yet. It would be a big user that is not currently in Clay, he said.

“It’s very early in the process,” he said.

At the same time, he’s also talking with a second tenant. This one would be what he calls an “active entertainment” use. That does not include the movie theatre chain, which would also be a part of the project.

The entertainment tenant would be unique to Upstate New York, he said. It would likely be located on the western perimeter of the property, where Dick’s Sporting Goods was located.

Hart said the possibility of a new, massive semiconductor plant at White Pine Commerce Park in Clay is driving interest from these potential tenants. In fact, Hart said one of the tenants had passed on the Central New York area previously, but has since changed its mind.
