Moes-Southwest-Grill-Celebrates-Cheese-With-Free-Queso-Day-September-20.jpg

Welcome to Free Queso Day!

Salsa and chips are always free at Moe's Southwest Grill, but queso—or "liquid gold," as they call it—is also free today. Why? Because it's Free Queso Day! Each year on the day, Moe's gives out a free six-ounce cup of their queso as a way to thank their loyal customers. In past years, the restaurant—which is a fast-casual franchise that serves southwestern food in around 700 locations—has held contests giving those who enter the opportunity to win free queso for life. (Well, at least one free cup a week for 24 years.) In 2019, the day was expanded to "Queso Season," and queso was celebrated all of September. Not only was free queso available in-store, but also by using the Moe Rewards app, online ordering, and catering. Moe Rewards members also got an extra 100 bonus points for every purchase of queso they made during the month.

SU News

Tony White is Syracuse football’s rising coaching star (PS; Leiker)

Tony White put the first big defensive play of Syracuse’s 2021 home opener against Rutgers in his players’ hands.

In practices leading up to the game, the Orange had struggled with making stops on third-and-long. That’s when White pulled defensive lineman Josh Black aside and asked him to draw up a play.

White, Syracuse football’s defensive coordinator, called that play early in the game when faced with the same situation, resulting in a 9-yard sack.

This is standard practice for White, believed to be the highest-paid assistant football coach SU had ever hired. He’s spent his whole career around coaches who place trust in their players and allow them to use their voice.

“You want to empower the guys to speak, and they spoke and took it in and they proved themselves right,” White said.

Opponent Preview: Everything to know about Purdue (DO; Alandt)

Syracuse, now 2-0 for the first time since 2018, returns home to face Big 10 opponent Purdue. The air-raid offense is working, the run game is as potent as ever, and receivers are going for big-yard catches and breakaway touchdowns. Defensively, Syracuse allowed a combined 21 points to Louisville and UConn.

Purdue enters off of a close loss to Penn State followed by a bludgeoning of Indiana State. Led by quarterback Aidan O’Connell, the Boilermakers look like a tremendous offense of national status through the first two weeks. For the first time since 2004, they’ll face off against Syracuse, looking to flash O’Connell and see if their defense can hold up once again.

Here’s everything you need to know about Purdue (1-1, 0-1 Big 10) prior to its matinee matchup with Syracuse (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast):

All-time series

Purdue leads 1-0.

Last time they played

The best thing that happened to the Orange in the opening weekend of 2004 was that running back Walter Reyes moved into fifth place on Syracuse’s all-time rushing list. He only garnered 31 yards on 12 carries during the 51-0 blowout loss. It wasn’t the most powerful start to a season that ended with a 6-6 record and a Champ Sports Bowl berth.

Syracuse kept Purdue quiet for about eight minutes before running back Jerod Void punched in a one-yard touchdown. Then, future NFL quarterback Kyle Orton tossed a 75-yard bomb to Brian Hare, and the Boilermakers never looked back. Then-No. 25 Purdue ended with 571 yards of total offense, including 25 first downs and 334 passing yards between Orton and backup Brandon Kirsch.

Matthew Bergeron has the chance to be the 1st NFL player from his hometown (DO; Smith)

Matthew Bergeron was a relative nobody when he traveled to Syracuse for a camp with some of his teammates in June 2018. But by midday, a few coaches had noticed him. During the one-on-one period when Bergeron went up against defensive linemen, he didn’t lose. All of the coaches soon surrounded him. People asked his mother, Annie, who had driven her three children down for the camp, if Bergeron was her son. Everybody was surprised about how well he played that day, she said.

Syracuse’s then-offensive coordinator Mike Lynch stayed in touch with Bergeron and came to his school, Cégep de Thetford, that winter. Lynch told Bergeron to be ready, since he could have a chance to start as a freshman, Thetford head coach Kevin Mackey said. Bergeron was in disbelief. He started five games as a first-year player in 2019.

Bergeron was the first player from Thetford to earn a Division-I scholarship. He’d also be the school’s first-ever NFL player if he enters the draft. Football is not the prominent sport in Bergeron’s hometown of Victoriaville, Quebec. NFL prospects don’t come out of Victoriaville — or even Quebec — regularly. That’s why all of Quebec knows about Bergeron, his mother said.

Beat writers predict SU's perfect start to continue against Purdue at home (DO; Staff)

With two statement victories under its belt, Syracuse is set to face its toughest test so far this season on Saturday against Purdue. The Boilermakers find themselves 1-1 heading into their Week 3 matchup after a four-point opening week loss to Penn State. Just like SU, who’s coming off a 34-point win over UConn, Purdue coasted to a 56-point shutout victory over Indiana State in Week 2. The Orange are on the brink of their first 3-0 start since 2018, the last time they were bowl-eligible.

Here’s how our beat writers predict Syracuse will match up against Purdue:

Alex Cirino (1-1)
Time to shine
Syracuse 32, Purdue 24

Like Syracuse, Purdue has scored over 30 points through its first two games this season, but the Orange should have the edge in Saturday’s game. Their offense has looked far more complete than it has at any point in the last two seasons, and against an inconsistent Boilermakers team that haven’t beaten an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since 2018, SU will have the edge offensively and put the ball in the end zone.

Defensively, while Purdue’s defense ranks in the top-20 this season against the rush, its secondary has averaged just over 200 passing yards allowed through its first two games. Syracuse’s passing game is at its peak. Garrett Shrader finished eight passing yards short of 300 against UConn. With the Orange already established in the run game, it’s the passing game that will both run up Saturday’s score and earn SU a 3-0 start to the season.

Connor Smith (1-1)
A barn burner
Syracuse 41, Purdue 35

Both of these teams can put up some points, but I expect SU’s offense to ultimately outduel Purdue and improve to 3-0. Shrader and Sean Tucker have been unstoppable through two games, and Shrader’s completion percentage ranks third in the nation, showing the efficiency the Orange’s passing attack has had so far this year. On the other side of the ball, Syracuse has been getting enough pressure even with a totally new defensive line and without linebacker Stefon Thompson (one of its best pass rushers last season).

'For my brother': King Doerue leads Purdue months after brother's death (DO; Alandt)

At The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Amarillo, Chris Doerue’s brothers took turns speaking about their late brother. King Doerue stepped on stage, seeing walls slick with a light pink shade, a wooden piano stationed to his right and pictures of Jesus performing baptisms scattered around the room. He then began to recall the pair’s relationship.

Doerue thought back to bus rides they spent together, sharing the same seat. During Doerue’s freshman year, Chris would sneak away from the varsity basketball locker room to watch his brother. Steve Jackson, Chris’ former basketball coach, would have to kick the pair out of the gym sometimes an hour or two after regular practice ended, finally allowing the janitors to clean up.

“‘I’m going to do everything from here on out for my brother,’” Jackson remembers Doerue saying. “‘Everything. He would have been with me every step of the way.’”

Shortly before 6 p.m. on May 8, the evening before Mother’s Day, Amarillo (Texas) police responded to a shooting on N. Johnson Street, about 14 minutes from Tascosa High School. They found Doerue’s brother, Chris, lying in a front yard with gunshot wounds. An ambulance rushed Chris to a nearby hospital, where he later died at the age of 25.
Doerue, Purdue’s running back with NFL aspirations, was closest with Chris out of anyone in the family, Jackson said. The pair played basketball together, and Chris tried to attend most of Doerue’s football games with the rest of the family. The two were inseparable, and bonded over their shared love of sports after their family took refuge in the United States during the ethnic and civil conflict in Ivory Coast.

My brother was a Legend, he in heaven now.:hearts:
— King Doerue (@king_doerue) May 9, 2022

“The entire network of the Doerue brothers is very close, but those two in particular were as tight as they come,” Jackson said.

Chris played basketball at nearby Wayland Baptist University, allowing him to attend all his younger brother’s football and basketball games. During Chris’s senior year, Doerue made Tascosa’s freshman team. The brothers stayed after practice to play one-on-one against each other. Jackson said members of the basketball team would stick around and watch the “physical” matchup.

Syracuse football is 2-0 for the first time since 2018, and they face their toughest test yet when they return to the Dome this Saturday. So what is Syracuse football, and where can they go from here? Samantha Croston, Tommy Sladek and Brendon Hodges discuss that and more on this week's edition of the Orange Zone Podcast.

It is the first time this season Syracuse has worn this combination. Purdue has not announced which uniform it will wear, though white jerseys are expected.

Syracuse vs Purdue kicks off at noon on Saturday. Here is how you can watch the game.

Purdue at Syracuse Preview (hammerandnails.com; Miller)

Is it just me, or does this game feel bigger than it should? The loss to Penn State originally dampened my enthusiasm a bit for this season, but it turns out that the Big Ten West kind of sucks. Yes, Minnesota might be good, but they need to play a real opponent first. Iowa cannot move the football. Nebraska has fired its coach. Northwestern just lost to Duke. Illinois is better than Iowa at offense, but not by a ton, plus they lost to Indiana. Wisconsin surprisingly lost to Washington State. The West really is there for the taking even with the Penn State loss.

That loss is still there though, and suddenly Purdue’s road games are more daunting than originally thought. Maryland is better than I thought. Purdue hasn’t won at Minnesota or Wisconsin in a very long time. Then there is Syracuse. The early season’s results show that this one will not be easy.

I still think Purdue is a good team, but it really beat itself with poor tackling and poor clock management against Penn State. Syracuse is another “prove it” game. While it does not count in the Big Ten standings, it feels like the type of game Purdue needs to win if it wants to win the West. A win on the road restores some confidence. A loss opens the door for a spiraling season with a dangerous FAU team coming next followed by a trip to Minneapolis.

Syracuse football: Previewing Purdue with Hammer and Rails (TNIAAM; Haller)

As the Syracuse Orange get ready to face the Purdue Boilermakers we asked the Purdue SBNation site, Hammer and Rails to give us some insight on Jeff Brohm’s squad.

TNIAAM: Purdue got battle-tested week one with Penn State, were there any positive takeaways from that game for you?

H&R: “I think there were quite a few. To me, the game was lost in two spots, and if you reverse either of them it is a win. First, Purdue fumbled deep in Penn State territory late in the first half, then gave up a 60+ yard TD with less than 10 seconds left. That was at least a 10 point shift in the game. Even with the fumble, the TD play was the result of extremely poor tackling. If you get the guy on the ground there Penn State is likely trying a long field goal at best with a few seconds left. Instead, they got 7 points when few expected them to score on that drive. It was a massive shift, especially when Purdue fumbled in field goal range on a play where it had gained a first down.

The second was late in the game when Purdue had two possessions with the lead, but could not move the ball or keep the clock moving. It was maddening that we were not even trying to run the ball. We had a number of incomplete ill-advised passes. Even then, it very nearly worked out when Purdue had a downfield catch with about two minutes left overturned on replay because it just barely hit the turf as he caught it.

There is not a ton of movement here. The starters were healthy after a 56 to 0 win against Indiana State. Chuck Sizzle has made himself option 1A for AOC and Coach Jeff Brohm. The run game had many backs involved last week, Doerue was sparingly used with the starters to keep him healthy.

Syracuse Football: Top-35 cornerback who had SU in top 4 picks Penn St. (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football recently made the top four in the recruiting process of a talented cornerback who had planned to take an official visit to the Hill.

However, one of the other finalists for 2023 three-star cornerback Zion Tracy was getting a ton of buzz from analysts and other recruiting insiders, and that concerned me.

This past weekend, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Tracy took an official visit to Big Ten Conference member Penn State, and then he said on Twitter that he was committing to the Nittany Lions.

While this is a bummer for the Orange, Tracy’s college choice doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Prior to his commitment announcement on social media, I counted nearly 10 predictions in the direction of Penn State for Tracy between the 247Sports Web site, and the On3 Web site.

Syracuse football has missed out on top-flight cornerback Zion Tracy.

A senior at the St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Conn., Tracy received a scholarship offer from Orange coaches this past June. He was eyeing an official visit to the ‘Cuse from October 28 to October 30, which is the same weekend that Syracuse football is hosting Notre Dame.

Line of Scrimmage: How FSU stacks up to Louisville, feat. John Powell of Card Chronicle (tomahawknation.com; Scribble)

Welcome to the Line of Scrimmage, where ahead of each game this football season, we’re giving you insight into Florida State’s opponents from those in the know.

This week, we spoke with John Powell of our SB Nation sister site, Card Chronicle, to get a first-hand look into the Louisville Cardinals as Florida State football gets set to start ACC play. John gives us some analysis on the Cardinals’ season so far, how quarterback Malik Cunnigham has fared through two games, what causes concern in Louisville’s run game and more.

You can read some of his answers here and listen to the full interview below.

Louisville rolls into Friday’s game with a 1-1 record. From a non-Louisville insider perspective, I think most of us thought the Cardinals would be 2-0 at this point. What has been the main problem so far in the early season for Louisville?

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the cinematic masterpiece of Black Sheep, but there’s a scene where Chris Farley is falling down a hill like for a long duration of time and then at the end he’s like, “what the heck was that?” and that was basically watching the Syracuse game.

The staff made it very clear in the offseason that they wanted Malik to focus on improving as a pocket pocket passer — going through his progressions and that kind of stuff — and they were limiting some of his abilities with running. In the spring they came out and flat out said don’t run the ball, and honestly, he came out in the first game and it looked like he hadn’t run the ball in 10 months. Syracuse held him to like 2.6 yards of carry or something like that.

Orange Watch: Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader off to fast start - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: By now all of Orange Nation knows that quarterback Garrett Shrader is just as prolific guiding an airplane in the sky as he is throwing a football in the air. With a low-key and Southern gentleman personality off the field, Shrader is simply getting better by the week on the field. Named Monday as the Davey O’Brien Great 8 winner for Week 2 of the season, automatically placing him on the midseason O’Brien watch list for the award going to the nation’s top quarterback, Shrader is busy preparing Syracuse (2-0) for its ‘next’ biggest game of the season Saturday afternoon (12:00 p.m. ET / ESPN2) in the Dome against Big Ten foe Purdue (1-1).

Perhaps the principal night and day difference of this year’s Syracuse football team compared to last year’s team that missed out on a bowl invitation by one victory, is just how much influence new offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck have had on Shrader, and how his play has created a ‘wow’ factor for those inside and outside the program.

Especially Shrader’s passing touch on short and deep balls, the latter with great fake handoffs. On the ground he’s making the right decisions on run option plays the majority of the time in wins over Louisville and Connecticut by keeping the chains moving.

“That’s one of the biggest things that we’ve put an emphasis on starting with coach Anae and coach Beck is four yards on first down, get half of it on second, convert on third, at the bare minimum,” Shrader said after a career high 292 yards passing with an 87% completion rate (third highest total in the FBS this season) in the rout of UConn last weekend.

“That’s something we keep track of, we put an emphasis on, especially in the red zone,” Shrader added. “Making sure we’re keen to that, not trying to take shots on third and two. Just play within the offense.”

Dino Babers has also been the beneficiary of assembling his best coaching staff over his seven-year tenure, he’s watching the complete evolution of Shrader when it comes to a passing quarterback matching his running skills.

Syracuse Football: It’s early, but Garrett Shrader has put up big numbers (itlh; Adler)

The 2022 season has a long way to go for Syracuse football, so I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but what quarterback Garrett Shrader has done in the Orange’s first two games is really impressive, and really encouraging.

A year ago, when the ‘Cuse dropped its final three games and went 5-7 overall, Shrader struggled in the passing attack, and the Orange’s offense was one-dimensional, relying way too heavily on All-American running back Sean Tucker and Shrader’s running abilities, too.

I get that the ‘Cuse has only competed in a pair of contests to date in 2022, a home trouncing of Louisville and a road domination of a bad UConn squad, but still, one has to feel good about what Shrader is doing so far.

When Syracuse football smoked the Huskies over the weekend, 48-14, two things most stood out to me. One is that the Orange vastly cleaned up its ridiculous number of penalties that it incurred against the Cardinals in week one.

And two, a ‘Cuse offense that was so run-heavy a stanza ago actually collected nearly twice as many passing yards versus UConn as the Orange registered on the ground.

Syracuse football starting QB Garrett Shrader is off to a hot start in 2022.

With the ‘Cuse (2-0) set to face off against Big Ten Conference member Purdue (1-1) this Saturday afternoon in Central New York, Shrader at this juncture in 2022 has completed a whopping 79.2 percent of his passes for 523 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions, per statistics on the ESPN Web site.

Last Win Over Top 25 OOC Team - Update 9/14/22

OOC Top 25 Wins

The ACC is performing better in terms of P5 OOC this season - which simply means they aren't losing all of them, but they are winning about the same percentage as the other power conferences. Now, take that up another notch and let's talk about performance against Top 25 opponents...

"When was the last time each team beat a ranked non-conference opponent?" that question was posed back in 2016, and four teams (Duke, UNC, Wake Forest and Virginia) were found particularly lacking.

Have any of those gotten any better in terms of winning OOC games? Have the other teams kept up the pace? I thought it was high time to update the list - but this time in chronological order:

Heinz, Coca-Cola, more must update packaging after Queen Elizabeth’s death (PS; AP)

Coca-Cola, Cadbury and Heinz are among around 800 companies that will have to reapply for a royal warrant after the prestigious label became void following last week’s death of Queen Elizabeth.

Its website states: “The royal household will review warrant grants upon a change of the reigning sovereign.”

However, it adds that “the company or individual may continue to use the royal arms in connection with the business for up to two years, provided there is no significant change within the company concerned.”

I case I don't get a chance tomorrow, I'd like to wish the Orange all the best and a convincing victory over Purdue this Saturday. The Boilermakers make everyone they play nervous, but this is the best Syracuse team I've seen in a while. The rest of the ACC is rooting for you!
