National Voter Registration Day, which was started in 2012, is a holiday celebrating democracy in the United States, in which the goal is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote. Awareness is raised so that tens of thousands of people register to vote who may not be reached otherwise. Volunteers work on the ground and with technology and media to make sure this happens. The day is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State and State Election Directors.

Syracuse football: RB Sean Tucker and OL Matthew Bergeron in Top 5 of Mel Kiper Jr. draft position rankings (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
A 4-0 Syracuse Orange football start is certainly one that warrants at least some attention. National media have started to take attention, with the Orange returning to the coaches poll at 25. Naturally, the players who have played a big part in driving Syracuse to this position are going to get recognition and looks at the next level.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. recently updated his NFL draft big board and position by position rankings, and he’s included two current Orange players in quite high ranks. RB Sean Tucker and OL Matthew Bergeron check in at No. 5 in their respective positions.
While Tucker has struggled over the past couple of games, that has largely been due to factors outside of his control. Bergeron hasn’t been one of those factors either as a steady, consistent and strong starter ever since the middle of 2019.
Tucker is still looking to regain the form that saw him set the record books alight last season but more involvement in the passing game can only improve his prospects of playing on Sundays.
Kiper doesn’t have Mikel Jones, Garrett Williams or Andre Szmyt currently in his top 10 position rankings. All three players elected to return to Syracuse for another season instead of entering last year’s draft.
Syracuse hasn’t had a first or second round draft pick since 2013 when Justin Pugh was selected in the first round, 19th overall. He was also the last Orange offensive lineman to be drafted. The last Syracuse running back to be drafted was Delone Carter who was taken in the 4th round of the 2011 draft. The Orange didn’t have a player selected in the 2022 draft.
Syracuse Football: Here’s why top-25 ranking is so important for Orange (itlh; Adler)
Okay, Syracuse football fans. Your Orange program is now a nationally ranked squad, after the latest iterations of the two major top-25 polls were released on Sunday.
Syracuse football is No. 25 in the Coaches poll, while in the Associated Press poll, the Orange is the No. 30 de facto team, garnering 22 votes that place the ‘Cuse in the No. 5 spot in the other receiving votes category of this ballot.
First of all, a huge shout-out to the Syracuse football players, head coach Dino Babers and his assistants, the rest of the Orange’s staff and the ‘Cuse fan base.
Secondly, can Syracuse football please keep winning and remain in the national rankings for the remainder of the 2022 season? Much appreciated.
Your Syracuse football team is in the top 25 of the Coaches poll this week.
So. A top-25 ranking is a terrific achievement for a ‘Cuse squad that has seen its shares of struggles in recent seasons under Babers. But after getting by Virginia this past Friday night, the Orange’s second nail-biting triumph in a row, Syracuse football sits at 4-0.
That victory versus UVA (2-2), coupled with several top-25 teams losing over the weekend, was enough to propel the Orange into the Coaches poll (or any poll) for the first time since 2019.
The ‘Cuse is also 4-0 to start a campaign for the inaugural occasion dating back to the 2018 term, when Syracuse football went 10-3 overall and finished ranked No. 15 in both major polls.
Next up for the Orange is a home non-conference clash this Saturday against FCS team Wagner (0-3), with the kick-off slated to commence at 5 pm.
I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but I’m confident that Syracuse football will prevail this coming weekend and move to 5-0 so far in 2022.
Certainly, with a grueling stretch of games lurking off in the not-too-distant future, there’s no guarantee that the Orange will stay in the Coaches poll indefinitely, or enter the AP poll.
For now, though, being a nationally rated group is huge for a variety of reasons.
Number one, it builds up a ton of buzz among the fan base, and hopefully, more casual fans will hop on the Syracuse football train and ride out this season by going to games at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Additionally, this top-25 ranking should provide more chatter about the Orange among national and Atlantic Coast Conference journalists, analysts, pundits and the like.
Oh, and can we please stop with the nonsense talk about Babers being on the hot seat? Unless the ‘Cuse is stunned by Wagner and completely falls apart for the rest of the 2022 season, Babers isn’t going anywhere for the time being.
Assuming Syracuse football does get by Wagner, the Orange will be 5-0 heading into a bye week, and it should be ranked in the Coaches poll and, hopefully, the AP poll.

Syracuse football, now 4-0, rises two more spots in ACC Power Rankings - The Juice Online (the juice; Vescovi)
We’re now a full month into the 2022 football season, and as we head into the heart of ACC play, we’ve got a fresh new ACC Power Rankings for you.
1. Clemson
The Tigers had a scare in Winston Salem last week, but they showed why they are in the top spot. DJ Uiagalelei is starting to come in to his own, and the defense did enough when called upon to get the victory on the road against a competitive Wake Forest team. There is no time to pat themselves on the back as the No. 2 team in the conference comes to Death Valley this weekend.
2. NC State
The Wolfpack have rounded in to form over the first four weeks of the season. The team beat a hot Texas Tech team with strong defense. Devin Leary has turned the ball over an uncharacteristic amount this season (two interceptions), and he will need to protect the ball this weekend in a marquee game against Clemson. I have seen growth from this team since Week 1 against ECU, and I can see them being the Atlantic Division representative in Charlotte. Their biggest game in decades is in front of them. Let’s see what this team has in store for the stretch run of the season.
3. Florida State
What a surprise surge for the ‘Noles. I honestly did not see this coming from them when I was looking at their schedule earlier in the year. The teams I thought would be strong have sunk the bottom at the hands of Florida State. The team is exceptional with Jordan Travis under center and have the talent around him to make a serious run in the Atlantic. It is nice to have Florida State back at the top of the rankings after what seems like an eternity of underachievement (it’s all relative) after Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M.
4. Wake Forest
What a heartbreaker for the Demon Deacons this past Saturday. The team is lights out offensively with Sam Hartman back, but they are just lacking ever so slightly on defense, which is keeping them from taking things to the next level. The offense will keep them in every game for the rest of the year, but the Atlantic is stacked. The reward for a close loss at home to Clemson? A road trip to Tallahassee with red hot Florida State.
5. Pittsburgh
This Pitt team has stayed stagnant for two weeks in the AP poll despite winning their games handedly. It’s because they have not played exciting football. The team is banged up at every level but doing enough to win. If the offense can get it together and the defense can return their starters at defensive end, then the Coastal Division could be theirs. But they don’t have a lot of room for error. If they misstep, they could sink like a stone in these rankings.
6. Syracuse
Talk about defying expectations! The Orange is a surprising 4-0 led by Robert Anae’s balanced offense. The team got some help against Purdue two weeks with QB Aidan O’Connell tossing a back pick-6 and two 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalties that helped move the ball to midfield on SU’s game-winning drive. But good teams take advantage of those opportunities and the Orange appears to be a good time. The stretch after Wagner is murderous but don’t be surprised if the Orange shock one of the top dogs in the Atlantic Division. Dino Babers’ seat was warm when the season started but it has definitely cooled as of today.

In this week’s SP+ rankings Syracuse drops ten to the 49th spot with the offense 69th (nice) while the defense ranks 49th. The Orange are ranked between Missouri and Houston.
The Football Power Index has Syracuse down six to 40th between West Virginia and Iowa. The FPI continues to predict that the Orange will reach 8 wins with an expected bowl eligibility of 99.1% now.

It’s official: Syracuse Football is prone to dramatic endings. The Orange (4-0, 2-0 ACC) held off a last minute comeback by their opponent for the second straight week to remain undefeated on the season.
ACC rival Virginia (2-2) was shutout through the first half of Friday night’s contest inside the JMA Wireless Dome, but fought back to take a 20-19 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Thanks to S.U. kicker Andre Szymt’s five field goals, most notably a 31-yard game winner with just over a minute left to play, S.U. escaped with the win.
It’s a season of firsts: the Orange have won their first four for the first time since 2018, leading to their first national ranking since 2019 (try to say that five times fast).
They enter this week sitting at No. 25 in the Coaches Poll, though Head Coach Dino Babers has higher aspirations.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about the Top 25,” Babers said in his press conference Monday. “But, the Top 20that’s what gets me excited.”
The Orange look to continue their win streak against FCS Wagner College (0-3) this Saturday. The Seahawks have lost 23 in a row dating back to 2019; still, Babers refuses to let Syracuse look ahead to their bye week and turn it into a three-week vacation.

Orange Bringing National Attention To Upstate New York Football (1045theteam.com; Voelker)
No matter which college team you root for, no one should deny the benefits to all of New York football when Syracuse University is playing well. 31 New Yorkers are currently on NFL rosters in 2022. Former pro football stars like Ron Jaworski, Boomer Esiason and even fan favorite Rob Gronkowski are all from the Empire State. Top names and the big teams always draw fans attention. That's why it's awesome when the Orange are playing well because upstate New York draws the attention of all of college football.
Syracuse University has a ranked football program once again. The Orange moved up to #25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Syracuse knocked off Virginia 22-20 on Friday night for its second ACC victory of the season. The Orange are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. Head coach Dino Babers has led the Syracuse Orange since 2016. Babers has been faced with rebuilding a once strong and popular program. This season he has told his players to relax a little.
"Try Less Harder" is a motto of his. The 61 year old head coach told Andrea Adelson of ESPN.com, "As you start getting older, if you have the skills, if you have the abilities, if it's going to happen, the best thing that you can do is be relaxed.I think back to all the head-coaching jobs I interviewed for, when I wanted the job so bad, and I never got the job. The very first time I took an interview where I said, 'You know what? If I get the job, I get it. If I don't, I don't. Well, I got the job. I seem to be undefeated when I have that attitude."

A national outlet released its latest college football power rankings on Monday following Week 4 of the season.
Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC) moved up two spots in CBS Sports’ new power rankings following its 51-45, double-overtime win at Wake Forest last Saturday, when DJ Uiagalelei completed 26-of-41 passes for a season-high 371 passing yards and a career-high five touchdown passes.
“D.J. is back!” CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd wrote. “If he wasn’t against Wake Forest, we wouldn’t be sitting here talking about the Tigers being darn close to where they were before 2021. I’ll say it: Clemson is the class of the ACC. Sound familiar?”
NC State, which Clemson is set to face Saturday at Death Valley (7:30 p.m., ABC), is the next-highest-ranked ACC team in CBS Sports’ latest power rankings at No. 13.
Florida State (No. 24) is the only other ACC team in the top-25 power rankings, as Wake Forest fell out, Miami fell out following its upset loss to Middle Tennessee and Pitt dropped out despite beating Rhode Island 45-24.
Overall, the top 10 of CBS Sports’ latest power rankings feature Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Southern Cal, Kentucky, Tennessee, Clemson, Utah and Oklahoma State, in that order.

Four of the nation’s 21 remaining undefeated FBS teams are from the Atlantic Coast Conference – all in the Atlantic Division, which is arguably the most difficult division in the country. Clemson is 4-0 for the seventh time in the last eight years; Florida State is 4-0 for the first time since 2015; NC State is 4-0 for the first time since 2018; Syracuse is 4-0 for the first time since winning 10 games in 2018, and is seeking its first 5-0 start since 1987.
Florida State and Syracuse are the only teams in the country with three wins vs. Power 5 opponents. The Seminoles have wins over LSU in New Orleans, at Louisville and vs. Boston College. The Orange have P5 victories over Louisville, Purdue and Virginia.

Syracuse football is two wins shy of becoming bowl eligible for the first time since the 2018 season.
The Orange (4-0, 2-0 ACC) on Saturday evening hosts FCS Wagner, a team that hasn’t won multiple games in a season since that same 2018 season.
That’s also the last time the two sides met, with Syracuse winning 62-10.
The Orange went on to win 10 games that season, capping the year with a victory against West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

Have Syracuse football fans bought into SU’s 4-0 start? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Simone)
Syracuse is off to its first 4-0 start since 2018, and with Wagner, who hasn’t won a game since 2019, visiting the Dome Saturday, odds are SU is about to be 5-0 for the first time since 1987. Those seasons both ended with double digit wins, so for this team to be in the same conversation as those two is already an accomplishment and not something most people, fans and prognosticators alike, expected.
The question is though, do Syracuse fans feel like this team is different from what they’ve been used?
One way to approach this is to look at attendance numbers. In week one against Louisville, SU drew 37,110 fans. In last year’s home opener, week 2 against Rutgers, the Dome hosted 31,941. There are external factors that could contribute to that disparity, such as a primetime game against the Cardinals compared to a mid-afternoon game against the Scarlet Knights. However, it’s hard to argue that there wasn’t more excitement surrounding this season compared to last, even at the very beginning.
Maybe the best comparison is last year’s Liberty game and Friday’s against Virginia. Both happened in week four on Friday nights in late September. The Orange were 2-1 going into their matchup with the Flames-the game that marked the beginning of the Garrett Shrader era-and drew 29,942 fans. On Friday, with SU 3-0, the attendance number was 34,590. That’s still only 71% of the Dome’s capacity, but is almost 5,000 more than a nearly identical game last year, which featured former Flames’ quarterback Malik Willis who was considered a potential first round pick at the time.

UNC football's growing frustration boils over (fayobserver.com; Batten)
Growing frustration over yet another failed defensive performance boiled over in some rare and glaring ways Saturday for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
UNC (3-1) suffered its first loss of the 2022 season before a sellout home crowd of 50,500 as Notre Dame (2-2) racked up 576 yards of total offense — 289 passing and 287 rushing — in a 45-32 romp. It marked a third straight game the Tar Heels have been run roughshod by an opposing offense, but this time they lacked the offensive support to pull out a win.
The downfall for North Carolina, which also prompted an unusual outburst from head coach Mack Brown, began at the start of the third quarter. Trailing just 24-14 at halftime, the Tar Heels allowed Notre Dame to march the second-half kickoff 75 yards in six plays for a touchdown and a 31-14 lead. UNC quarterback Drake Maye fumbled on the next play from scrimmage to hand the ball right back to the Irish offense.
Notre Dame's offense again moved into scoring position at the Tar Heel 3-yard line where it eventually faced a fourth-and-goal. A pass by quarterback Drew Pyne was knocked down in the end zone by UNC linebacker Cedric Gray, causing a roar of approval from the Kenan Stadium crowd. But those cheers quickly turned to boos when Gray was called for pass interference.
After seeing the replay on the stadium's video board, Brown charged onto the field to question the call and was immediately flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for the first time in his Hall of Fame career.
"I think that's the first,'' Brown said afterward. "We really want to win. And we want to have a fair chance to win. We want to compete as hard as we can and we want to make each other accountable. If I feel like something has been taken away from the kids on a play, it's my responsibility to stand up for them, and that's simply what I'm doing. If somebody throws a flag at me because I'm questioning a call, good for them.''

"It's tough. It's a tough locker room in there. There's guys looking for answers," Virginia head coach Tony Elliott told the media after the game. "And the truth is we can't continue to lose to ourselves. We got 12 penalties; we got some some critical mistakes by some of our older guys. Offensively, we were another situation, little adversity early in the game, and guys started to abandon their technique and go away from the things that we've been teaching them to do, and just trying to play ball. And that's just not who I am, and hat's not who we are as a program, and because of that, we're not playing complimentary football. Defense gave us some short fields, we couldn't capitalize. Soon as we hit a big play, then we have a mental mistake - we have a holding call a false start, something that gets us behind the chains.
"When they turn the ball over four times, and you don't come away with with points off those turnovers like you should, then you haven't earned the right to win the game," added Elliott.

If Syracuse football can defeat FCS team Wagner (0-3) this coming Saturday in Central New York, the Orange will begin a term at 5-0 for the first time since 1987, per SU Athletics.
No disrespect to Wagner, but I would be floored if the ‘Cuse (4-0) lost to this FCS squad on Saturday, Oct. 1, from the JMA Wireless Dome.
In any event, that nugget above from SU Athletics is interesting to me. You all remember the Syracuse football 1987 season, right?
I wasn’t quite 10 years old then, and my passion for Orange sports wouldn’t evolve until a decade or so later when I became a student at Syracuse University, but of course, 1987 was one of the finest campaigns for the ‘Cuse in program history.
Syracuse football is looking to go 5-0 for the first instance in 35 years.
In 1987, the Orange was a national championship contender. Miami would win the ultimate prize, but the ‘Cuse finished that season ranked No. 4 nationally in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls.

No. 23 Florida State Seminoles football is prepping to take on the No. 22 Wake Forest Demon Deacons this Saturday inside Doak Campbell Stadium, just the second time in series history that both teams are ranked.
While both teams are approaching the work week as usual, officials are monitoring the status of Hurricane Ian, which became a Category 1 storm in the last 24 hours. Currently on a trajectory to affect the west coast of Florida (namely the Fort Myers and Tampa area), there also remains a threat in the panhandle with some models having the cone passing through the area.

Tornado confirmed in Upstate NY by National Weather Service (PS; Herbert)
The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado hit Upstate New York on Sunday.
According to WBNG, the National Weather Service in Binghamton said a storm survey revealed a tornado moved through Walton, N.Y., between 6:30 and 6:41 p.m. on Sept. 25. The twister’s winds were measured at EF-0 to EF-1, the two weakest of six categories on the Enhanced Fujita scale used to measure tornado strength; wind gusts peaked at 95 miles per hour, the NWS said.
Walton, located 50 miles east of Binghamton in Delaware County, reportedly saw trees that were uprooted and fell in a convergent pattern. Metal sheeting ripped off a roof at an auto shop on Route 10 and was thrown about 100 yards; other damage in the town included lawn furniture and part of a deck railing blown northwest while trees were blown down facing southwest.
No injuries were reported.
Tornadoes are not as common in New York as they are in Tornado Alley and Dixie Alley, where the strongest tornadoes often hit the southern Plains and Deep South. More than 80% of twisters in the Empire State are categorized as EF-0 or EF-1 on a scale that goes up to EF-5 (incredible damage with wind gusts of 261 to 312 mph).
