Welcome to National Coaches Day!

Coaches are recognized and honored today for their many contributions. The first National Coaches Day took place in 1972, on the heels of the passage of Title IX, the founding of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, and the 1972 Olympics. On September 19th of that year, President Richard Nixon issued Proclamation 4157, proclaiming the day to take place on October 6th. This followed Senate Joint Resolution 213, adopted on August 29th, which authorized and requested the president to do so. In his proclamation, Nixon said that "a coach can help build that moral fiber on which our future as a Nation depends." He went on to say that "it is appropriate that our Nation join in according them the recognition and honor which they so richly deserve, for they represent the finest elements in the American character."

“The cat’s out of the bag now. People are going to be looking for No. 19.” Oronde Gadsden’s emergence as Syracuse’s top receiver has followed years of waiting his turn in high school and college

Oronde Gadsden II’s 2nd breakout season keyed by patience, adjustments (DO; Smith)

For years, Oronde Gadsden II has waited his turn. First in high school, when his team, littered with future Division I and NFL players, didn’t need him as a freshman or sophomore. Then in college, when his team, led by a generational running back, didn’t need wide receiver depth.

But Gadsden stayed patient. He worked on getting stronger and faster. He played special teams and changed his position. By his junior year of high school, he was a go-to target. Likewise during his sophomore year of college.

Entering the spring of his sophomore year of high school, Gadsden looked like a “totally different guy,” according to then-head coach Patrick Surtain Sr. That fall, Gadsden notched 21 receptions for 428 yards and six touchdowns. In a second-round playoff game against local power Miami Northwestern (Fla.) High School, Gadsden took a slant pass 60 yards, juking several players on the way.

Gadsden’s father, Oronde, who played in the NFL for seven years and won a Super Bowl, thought to himself, “maybe we got something here,” after that play.

The plan has always been for Gadsden to be better than his dad, Oronde said. But Gadsden played on American Heritage (Fla.) High School’s JV team as a freshman and appeared sparingly as a sophomore. He was frustrated going against future NFL defensive backs like Patrick Surtain II in practice. But he slowly developed into the team’s top receiver and a legitimate Power Five recruit.

Evaluating the Syracuse offense through first five games of the season (247sports.com; Finneral)

In 2021, the Syracuse offense was nothing to write home about. Syracuse has flipped the script so far in 2022, averaging 38.4 points per game (over 13 ppg more than 2021). Here is an evaluation of the Orange offense this season.

Becoming multi-dimensional

The biggest difference-maker for the Syracuse offense this season has been the improvement in the passing game. Syracuse was completely reliant on the rush in 2021, finishing first in the ACC in rushing yards per game, but last in passing yards per game.

This season has been a different story so far. Syracuse has had a much more balanced attack. The Orange sit 7th in the ACC with 251.2 passing yards per game, which is just under 100 yards better than last season’s average.

The combination of Garrett Shrader, Robert Anae and Jason Beck deserve a ton of credit for the uptick in passing numbers. Shrader looks significantly more accurate than last season. Anae’s offensive system has been very beneficial for Shrader with many creative ways to get the ball into playmaker’s hands.

This improvement in the passing game has not come at the expense of the rushing game. Syracuse still sits 4th in the conference in rushing yards per game at 190.4.

Teams have clearly game-planned around stopping Sean Tucker. Tucker has been slowed down in a few contests, but he still sits 10th in rush yards per game in the FBS. Tucker has also been featured more as a receiver and is creeping up on his receiving stats from the entire 2021 season. As teams have focussed on Tucker, it has allowed other areas of the offense to flourish.

Syracuse football is 5-0 and now they get a week to rest and recover ahead of a big two-week conference stretch. Meanwhile the Orange Zone podcast team isn't taking any breaks. This week we introduce a new member of the team (00:00-02:20) who, after reacting to a dominant showing against Wagner (03:46-6:15) gives us their opinion on what's made this team so good so far this season (06:16-08:55) as well as the keys to their continued success (10:45-12:47). Add in a look ahead at an ACC gauntlet filled with ranked teams (15:32-19:49) Producer Brendon's over-the-top trivia (25:16-30:50) and the mindset of the Orange as they make their way through the bye week (30:50-33:15) and there's no shortage of talking points to touch on throughout a week without Syracuse football.

SU's on a bye, so who stands to benefit the most from a week off? (cnycentral.com; Hodges)

Raise your hand if you saw this coming. The Syracuse Orange are five games into the 2022 season and they're 5-0 for the first time in forever (or at least since 1987). Now they, and by extension you, the Orange fanbase, get to take a week to kick back, relax and watch the rest of the college football world turn.

WATCH this week's episode of "The Orange Zone Podcast"

It's a perfect time for a bye. Off a big win and having been tested in their two prior tilts the Orange have a chance to both mend physically and reset mentally. It's also just shy of the halfway point of the season and just ahead of the two biggest games the Orange will play all year.

Two ranked opponents. Two conference foes. Two chances to really announce that the Syracuse Orange have arrived on the national scene.

So who stands to benefit the most from a week off when it comes the the Syracuse Orange football program? The easy answer is everyone. We don't live in a world of easy answers though so lets get specific. Here are the three individuals and/or units that stand to gain the most over the course of the next week.

LeQuint Allen Credits Sean Tucker Tutelage, Offensive Line for Breakout Performance (SI; Losito)

Saturday’s game against Wagner had many memorable moments, but one player finally had his moment to shine. True freshman running back LeQuint Allen set his own record by making his first ever collegiate touchdown, only to go on in the same quarter and make a 90-yard run down field. This is the first time a SU football player had a run that long since 1949.

As a freshman running back Allen has spent a lot of time watching Sean Tucker practice, prepare and perform. Tucker, Syracuse’s starting running back, ran for 232 yards last game. Allen said Tucker is someone he really looks up to.

“Just a role model. Someone you look after,” said Allen. “He’s a great person on and off the field. He leads the way in meetings off the field and on the practice field. He’s just a role model.”

Allen praised the O-Line for the way they played against Wagner and said that they were the ones that helped him make huge plays. He said they knew exactly who to block and rarely made any mistakes.

“They played a huge part in my performance,” said Allen.

The coaches have also played a huge part in Allen’s success. Allen said offensive coordinator Robert Anae makes understanding concepts and assignments easier. He spends time breaking everything down and explains what they have to learn and how to execute it on the field.

Syracuse offense flying high in 2022 season (cbssports.com; video)

247Sports James Finneral breaks down why the Syracuse offense is much more efficient in 2022.

Syracuse football has started 5-0, but there are perils ahead - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Last Saturday was a pretty noteworthy day for the ACC, specifically its Atlantic Division. You may not have paid that much mind to it, as you were likely directing the majority of your attention to just one team from the division, specifically Syracuse manhandling Wagner at the Dome.

Several of SU’s divisional mates were displayed on center stage this past weekend, as #22 Wake Forest played at #23 Florida State in the 3:30pm ABC national broadcast window, then, after some studio show highlight time, the primetime 7:30pm ABC slot went to #10 North Carolina State and #5 Clemson. Heady stuff for the conference, which also had #24 Pittsburgh in the ACC Network’s primetime slot, hosting Georgia Tech.

It was also heady stuff for the Orange once all the weekend activity was in the books. The updated AP poll came out on Sunday with SU debuting at #22. Unsurprisingly, the Seminoles and Panthers plummeted from the rankings after their respective losses. The Wolfpack slid to #14, one spot in front of Wake Forest.

Syracuse will probably take a step or two higher next week, pending the outcomes of the teams listed immediately above them, many being involved in big games. #14 NC State faces Florida State, #16 BYU takes on Notre Dame, #17 TCU and #19 Kansas will lock horns, and #18 UCLA battles #11 Utah, among others. When Saturday’s smoke clears, it certainly looks like the Orange will levitate up a couple spots in the polls with the “0” in their loss column lifting them up like a helium balloon.

And then, once the bye week is in the rearview mirror, SU gets acquainted with all of those ACC teams in and around the top 25, starting with the Wolfpack. The one team who was not in the top 25 last week, yet appears in the next six games of Syracuse’s slate, is Notre Dame, who picked up some points in the coaches’ poll this week.

So, business is going to pick up. And SU may not be ready for all of it.

Going into the season, the Orange looked like a young team, carrying the consequence of being thin. The roster has a handful of pro prospects, but still has problems. And that roster keeps losing players.

Syracuse football: first down offense vs Wagner (TNIAAM; Wall)

We didn’t expect the Syracuse Orange to struggle with Wagner but I’m not sure we thought it would be this easy.

Syracuse moved the ball at will against the over-matched Seahawks and as the guys mentioned on this week’s podcast, the scripted pass plays seemed to get some confidence throwing sideline routes.

What’s interesting is that as we talked about with the running plays going to the left, in this game Garrett Shrader was 5-5 throwing to the left and didn’t attempt a pass to the right. Were the Orange trying to bring better balance to the offense, working out an issue the coaches noticed in the first four games, or are they trying to throw off future opponents? Something to watch for in next weekend’s game.

If you take away LeQuint Allen’s 90-yard scamper, the Orange still averaged nearly 8 yards per carry on first-down runs. Syracuse isn’t going to be this efficient the rest of the way but if the offense can continue to be balanced, they will be much harder to defend.

Syracuse Football: Garrett Shrader in top 10 nationally in passing efficiency (itlh; Adler)

What a difference a year makes, along with new coaches, for Syracuse football quarterback Garrett Shrader.

Certainly, last weekend’s performance by Shrader was against an overmatched opponent. And we’ll have to wait and see how the Orange’s starting QB fares against brutal competition lurking on the horizon.

But through five games in the 2022 campaign, Shrader by and large has performed at a surprisingly high clip, from my perspective. Let’s give credit where credit is due to first-year offensive coordinator Robert Anae and first-year quarterbacks coach Jason Beck, who both left Virginia in the off-season for the Hill.

With the likes of N.C. State, Clemson and others coming up, Garrett Shrader will face tough challenges in the near future. However, he has helped lead the ‘Cuse to its first 5-0 start in a season dating back to 1987, with the Orange nationally ranked in both major top-25 polls.

Syracuse football quarterback Garrett Shrader, so far, has proven highly efficient.

According to ESPN statistics, Shrader in 2022 is completing 70.9 percent of his passes. Through the air, he has generated 1,224 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and just one interception.

If those numbers held up over the 12-game regular season, Shrader would collect nearly 3,000 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, while only having two to three picks. I’m more than good with such production.

When Syracuse football crushed FCS team Wagner, 59-0, this past Saturday in Central New York, I fully recognize that the Seahawks were not a formidable foe.

Regardless, Shrader’s passes in that non-conference encounter looked so darn crisp, and he didn’t throw an incompletion. Against Wagner, Garrett Shrader was 17-of-17 for 238 passing yards and two touchdowns in the air. He also had a rushing score.

ACC: Make or break time? NC State hosts Florida State (AP; Kekis)

Some things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 6:

GAME OF THE WEEK

Florida State (4-1, 2-1 ACC) at No. 14 North Carolina State (4-1, 0-1)

The Wolfpack climbed two spots last week in the AP Top 25 to grab their first top 10 ranking since 2002, then lost the first top 10 matchup in program history, 30-20, at No. 5 Clemson. Another loss and forget about capturing the Atlantic Division title, and a visit to No. 22 Syracuse follows with the Orange coming off a bye. The Seminoles lost 31-21 at home to Wake Forest, which moved up seven spots this week to No. 15. The setback dropped the Seminoles from No. 23 out of the AP poll.

BEST MATCHUP

North Carolina (4-1, 1-0) at Miami (2-2, 0-0)

It’s the conference opener and a Coastal Division clash for the Hurricanes, whose losses were to Middle Tennessee and last week to Texas A&M. The Hurricanes defense will have to deal with UNC quarterback Drake Maye, who leads the nation in points responsible for. UNC is tied with Duke for the top spot in the division and is seeking its fourth straight win in the series, which would be a first for the Tar Heels.

LONG SHOT

Army (1-3) at No. 15 Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1). The Black Knights are struggling for one of the few times under Jeff Monken, who’s in his ninth year. Army’s lone win was 49-10 over FCS foe Villanova. Last year’s game at West Point was a barnburner, with the Demon Deacons holding on for a 70-56 victory behind Sam Hartman’s five TD passes. It was Army’s third straight loss and ended its home winning streak at 13.
https://apnews.com/article/college-...alon-daniels-b8b263ff94bd0aabf65aaa54e5da2cef
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

In Georgia Tech’s 26-20 upset win over Pitt last week, place-kicker Gavin Stewart scored the Yellow Jackets’ first 12 points. It was the team’s only scoring until midway through the fourth quarter. He had field goals of 40, 37, 33, and 30 yards and converted both extra points for a 14-point game, a career high.

IMPACT PLAYER

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has thrown 19 touchdown passes and suffered only one interception while completing 115 of 165 (69.7%) passes for 1,594 yards. Hés the only ACC QB averaging over 300 passing yards a game (318.8), his quarterback efficiency is a league-high 187.6, and the Tar Heels lead the ACC inscoring, averaging 45.4 points.

Holliday: Heels, Devils atop chaotic Coastal :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

I think we all had an inkling NC State’s receivers would have a hard time getting open before Clemson’s defensive front got in Devin Leary’s face. But Clemson’s dominance wasn’t limited to the defensive side. The Tigers’ rebuilt offensive line ultimately created space for Will Shipley and DJ Uiagalelei to run. NC State held the lead late in the second quarter but couldn’t hold on.

Meanwhile, in the unpredictable Coastal Division, Pitt’s stunning home loss to winless Georgia Tech, coupled with UNC’s and Duke’s easy wins over their rivals from Virginia, put the Tar Heels and Blue Devils in the early lead in the division standings.

Clemson’s way out front now

With Clemson’s double overtime win at Wake Forest-and the Deacons then scored an impressive 10 point triumph over undefeated Florida State-coupled with the Tigers’ 30-20 win over NC State, Dabo Swinney’s bunch is well on its way to a spot in the ACC Championship Game. Again.

The Tigers visit Boston College and Florida State in the next two weeks, but they get Syracuse at home, not in the Dome. They close out ACC play with Louisville and Miami, both at Death Valley. In between Clemson travels to Notre Dame-maybe the Tigers can snap the Irish 25 game winning streak against ACC teams in the regular season?

Florida State vs. NC State - Game Preview - October 8, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN; AP)

Florida State (4-1, 2-1 ACC) at No. 14 North Carolina State (4-1, 0-1), Saturday, 8 p.m. ET (ACC Network)

Line: N.C. State by 3, according to .

Series record: FSU leads 27-15.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

N.C. State is coming off a loss at No. 5 Clemson that was a hit to its chances of winning the ACC Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack will need to bounce back and keep winning to stay within reach of the Tigers in the standings. The Seminoles are coming off a loss to No. 15 Wake Forest, knocking them out of the AP Top 25 and putting them in similar footing with a date vs. Clemson still ahead.

KEY MATCHUP

N.C. State receivers vs. FSU secondary. Much was expected of Wolfpack quarterback Devin Leary as the preseason pick for league player of the year, though the offense hasn't settled into a rhythm. Some of that has to do with the team losing top receiver Emeka Emezie from last year and the lack of a proven go-to threat downfield, which the team is still seeking. There could be an opportunity to find that against the Seminoles, who have already allowed eight touchdown passes in ACC play and allowed opposing passers to connect on 62.4% of their attempts.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

FSU: QB Jordan Travis. Travis is pushing the ball downfield for the Seminoles. He leads the league and is tied for eighth nationally by averaging 9.7 yards per pass attempt, while his 14.77 yards per completion is an ACC high and 10th in the Bowl Subdivision ranks.

N.C. State: LB Payton Wilson. Wilson had his second big tackling performance since returning from an early season upper-body injury, racking up 11 stops against Clemson for a tough defense.

FACTS & FIGURES

N.C. Sate has won four of the last five meetings. ... The Wolfpack outscored the Seminoles 82-17 in the first quarter of the last eight games in the series. ... The Seminoles are second in the league in total offense at 481.6 yards per game. ... FSU last won in Raleigh in 2016 and has lost the past two trips here. ... N.C. State has won 13 straight home games, the fifth-longest active streak in the country. ... Leary is two touchdown passes away from tying for third in the program's all-time list (63). ... FSU was ranked No. 23 in last week's AP Top 25 poll.

3 Biggest Surprises | ACC Football So Far (youtube; video; ACCDN)

Every season there are surprises to be discovered. Some teams and players will meet, exceed, or fall below expectations. As we enter week 6 of this season, there are some storylines that are sure to raise eyebrows: The 'Canes are looking for answers after a surprising 0-2 start. Duke has become an improbable contender in the Coastal Division. Check out the other surprising developments in the ACC right here!

Boston College Football v. Clemson: A Conversation with Tigers Blog Shakin The Southland (bcinterruption.com; Schestag)

As Boston College honors Welles Crowther with its annual Red Bandana Game, the team prepares for its toughest test yet against #5 Clemson. Our friend Ryan Kantor at Shakin The Southland gave us his thoughts on the matchup.

1. Coming off of back-to-back wins against ranked opponents, there is definitely some momentum behind this Tigers team. Does it feel like CFP or bust for them? How do you feel about the team?

RK: I entered this season hoping to beat our chief rivals (NCSU, FSU, and U of SC) and reclaim our place atop the ACC. I think that has to remain the goal, however with a 5-0 start and the way that Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, and U of SC have struggled, losing more than one remaining game would seem like a bust. A 12-1 Clemson probably makes the playoff so I suppose de facto you could say that it is CFP or bust, but fans’ minds are more focused on the ACC right now.

2. The Clemson offense has been much improved since last season, and of course DJ Uiagalelei’s turnaround has been a huge part of this. Has he proven that his struggles from last year are behind him? Who’s another weapon on this team to watch out for?

RK: Yes, at this point he is second in the ACC in passing yards and has a 19-1 TD-to-INT ratio. He’s also been an extremely effective runner thanks to some weight loss which the TV announcers love to discuss at length. He’s in the best shape of his life and all the other sports clichés you want to use on a great bounce-back player.

Will Shipley at running back is a stud. His numbers aren’t crazy, but Clemson’s O-line is better at pass protection than run blocking so his yardage is well-earned. He is a great talent. The welcomed change for the offense has been the involvement of the tight ends. Davis Allen and Jake Briningstool have been excellent and are getting featured much more heavily in the offense than any tight ends over the past five years.

Virginia football set to take on Louisville in a matchup of winless ACC teams (cavalierdaily.com; Symthe)

Virginia football dug itself out of a 17-point hole to upend Louisville 34-33 on the road last year. In arguably the most thrilling game of the season, the 2021 matchup was chock-full of offense and continued the theme of close contests between the Cardinals and Cavaliers. One year later, both teams have found themselves in the bottom rung of the ACC ladder. Louisville (2-3, 0-3 ACC) nearly defeated Florida State and Boston College yet ultimately fell short, while Virginia (2-3, 0-2 ACC) gave Syracuse a fight before falling flat against Duke Saturday.

Both squads will be eager to capture their first ACC win of the season Saturday afternoon. Victory has narrowly eluded the Cavaliers and Cardinals, both of whom were predicted to finish higher than their record suggests they will at the end of the season. Virginia stands at dead-last in the ACC Coastal, while Louisville possesses the worst conference record in the Atlantic Division. A still-early season, however, will light a fire in each team as they take the field Saturday.

Storylines

Senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong’s struggles

Is it time to scrap the playbook? Armstrong — who set the Virginia single-season record for passing yards in 2021 — has looked unrecognizable throughout the first five games of the year. The departure of offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterback coach Jason Beck are possible reasons for Armstrong’s slump, yet the senior play caller has turned the ball over at an alarming rate while failing to connect with his star wide receiver group. A stat to note is Armstrong’s completion rate this season — 52 percent. A more than 13 percent dip from last season has revealed Armstrong’s unexpected inconsistency even in a new system.

FSU football: NC State’s Dave Doeren scouts Noles and Jordan Travis (chopchat.com; Hunt)

FSU football (4-1) and NC State (4-1) are in the same boat after coming off their first losses in the 2022 season.

Both teams lost to arguably the two top teams in the ACC, Clemson and Wake Forest. NC State didn’t play anyone worth mentioning before the Clemson game and should have lost their first game of the season on the road against ECU.

However, since that narrow escape, they beat the teams they should have beaten. FSU football has had a more difficult schedule, with wins over three power five programs.

However, the Noles have faced major injury issues on both sides of the ball. Nevertheless, they come into the game as only +3.5 betting underdogs.

NC State head coach Dave Doeren isn’t one to hold his tongue but spoke respectfully regarding the Noles before the matchup:

“It’s the most impressive Florida State team we’ve played in a long time,” Doeren said at his weekly news conference. “They seem to be playing really fast. Offensively, it’s what you think when you turn on film of Florida State. They usually have tremendously good skill players, and they do. Their receivers are fast. … They’re very balanced, averaging 200 yards plus in rushing. “On defense they’re fast. They don’t do a lot but they do it well. Their D line is active. They do play a lot of press coverage on the outside and force you to make contact catches.”

Dave Doeren’s sentiments sound similar to what Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson said regarding the Noles last week. FSU didn’t play anywhere near to its potential, had several starters out or playing injured, and was only a few plays away from potentially having a different outcome against Wake Forest. The key to it all is quarterback Jordan Travis, and Doeren spoke about the difference he sees in QB1:

He’s very athletic. He can run, run with the football,” Doeren said. “Comparing him from last year to this year, last year I thought he was an athlete playing quarterback. This year he’s a quarterback. He’s thrown accurate passes. He’s reading coverage. He’s giving receivers chances to make plays. He’s moving around in the pocket. He’s playing really good football.”

ACC power rankings heading into Week 6 (yahoo.com; Turri)

Week 6 ACC Football Power Poll (dailyprogress.com; Barber)

It’s the first week of October but the ACC may have already seen its biggest games play out when Clemson took care of North Carolina State on Saturday, a week after surviving a double-overtime affair at Wake Forest.

The challengers took their shots, but the Tigers are still the king of the ACC jungle. And while the Atlantic Division further entrenched itself as where it’s at in the league, the Coastal descended deeper into its annual chaos, turmoil highlighted by Pittsburgh’s seemingly inexplicable loss to Georgia Tech.

The top five teams in this week’s Lee Enterprises ACC Power Poll all play in the Atlantic, led by Clemson — which still has games later this month against 4-1 Florida State and 5-0 Syracuse — the unanimous choice at No. 1.

Voters: Mike Barber and David Teel (Richmond Times-Dispatch), Greg Madia and John Shifflett (Charlottesville Daily Progress), Aaron McFarling (Roanoke Times) and John Dell (Winston-Salem Journal)

1. Clemson (5-0, No. 1 last week): Their back-to-back wins over Wake Forest and North Carolina State have taken the Tigers off the vulnerable line and vaulted them back into College Football Playoff and even national title contention. Next: at Boston College, Saturday

2. Wake Forest (4-1, No. 4 last week): The Demon Deacons proved their mettle, first in taking Clemson to double overtime, then by bouncing back to beat a strong Florida State team the following week. Next: vs. Army, Saturday

3. North Carolina State (4-1, No. 2 last week): Now it’s the Wolfpack’s turn. Can N.C. State rebound from losing it’s ‘Super Bowl’ game against Clemson and take down visiting Florida State? The Pack needs quarterback Devin Leary to get rolling. Next: vs. Florida State, Saturday
t-4. Florida State (4-1, No. 3 last week): The Seminoles’ season-opening win over LSU keeps looking better and better as the Tigers keep winning. They have a chance to make major statements this week in Raleigh and the following weekend when they host Clemson. Next: at North Carolina State, Saturday
t-4. Syracuse (5-0, No. 6 last week): How much of the Orange’s big start is due to a soft early schedule? That answer should become clear after this week’s open date. Syracuse hosts North Carolina State, visits Clemson and hosts Notre Dame before October ends. Next: vs. North Carolina State, Oct. 15

ACC Football Power Rankings: 2022 Week 6 - Sports Illustrated Louisville Cardinals News, Analysis and More (SI; McGavic)

We haven't even reached the halfway point of the 2022 season, and the ACC's preseason favorite is already in a position to runaway with the title.

A week removed from going toe-to-toe with Wake Forest, Clemson dispatched of their next-greatest threat to the Atlantic Division crown with a victory against NC State.

While the Deacs and Wolfpack are by no means out of the running, and teams like Florida State and Syracuse (!) could still challenge them, Clemson's grip on the division is now extremely tight. Take into account how nutty the Coastal Division has been, and it's hard to envision anyone else but the Tigers winning it all.

Anyways, it was another chaotic week in the ACC, with everyone but Clemson moving either up or down in our power rankings. So where do things currently stand in the conference following week five? Check out our updated ACC power rankings below:

1. Clemson Tigers

Record:
5-0, 3-0
Last Week's Ranking: No. 1
Week Five Result: W, 30-20 vs. NC State

Not like it has been a huge question throughout the season, but at this point, it's safe to say that the ACC is now officially Clemson's to lose. The Tigers put together arguably their best performance of the year against an NC State team who was generally regarded as the second-best team in the ACC heading into the season. QB DJ Uiagalelei led two crucial drives right before and after halftime, and their stout defense set the tone early. Sure, there's still plenty of football left and a lot can happen, but the race for the Atlantic Division crown seems over now that Clemson has taken down their two biggest threats to it.

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Record: 4-1, 1-1
Last Week's Ranking: No. 4
Week Five Result: W, 31-21 at Florida State

That's how you respond to a disappointing loss. Wake Forest was so, so close to knocking off Clemson the week before, but they didn't let that result beat them twice. Instead, the Demon Deacons went out and produced their most impressive win of the year down at Florida State. The offense wasn't just QB Sam Hartman, as the Deacs also got an impressive performance out of RB Justice Ellison, and their struggling defense did a good job at containing a potent Seminoles offense. The Atlantic is very much Clemson's to lose, but as of right now, Wake Forest is the second-best int he division and trending in the right direction.

3. NC State Wolfpack

Record: 4-1, 0-1
Last Week's Ranking: No. 2
Week Five Result: L, 30-20 at Clemson

I don't want to say that NC State completely squandered the opportunity to take command of the ACC, but at the end of the day, they didn't capitalize on it. They seemed rattled around that crucial stretch before and after halftime, and weren't as consistant as the Tigers were on either side of the ball. Not being able to establish the run, even with Clemson DT Bryan Breese still out, proved to be their biggest detriment. Their stout defense wasn't bad, per se, but didn't come through during the two biggest moments of the game.

4. Florida State Seminoles

Record: 4-1, 2-1
Last Week's Ranking: No. 3
Week Five Result: L, 31-21 vs. Wake Forest

I'm trending towards believing Florida State is actually "back," but they definitely have some work to do. It would be easy to blame the defense for their loss to Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons are just that good offensively. Instead, the Noles' offense is to blame here, despite moments of brilliance from QB Jordan Travis and company. Wake's defense is one of the worst in the ACC, and still held FSU to their lowest-scoring output all season simply because they couldn't get out of their own way.

5. Syracuse Orange

Record: 5-0, 2-0
Last Week's Ranking: No. 6
Week Five Result: W, 59-0 vs. Wagner

Syracuse might actually be good, folks. I won't spent much time here since they played an FCS squad, but the Orange definitely did what they had to do in this situation. Sean Tucker continues to show why he is one of the best running backs in the nation, QB Garrett Shrader continues to make strides as a passer, and the defense pitched a shutout.

Bret Bielema speaks on what he saw from Tommy DeVito at Syracuse (sturdaytradition.com; Bricker)

Bret Bielema spoke about his quarterback in a recent interview with Greg McElroy on ‘Always College Football’. Tommy DeVito has been a key part of the Illinois offense this season.

Most Illinois fans know that DeVito came to Champaign after spending some time at Syracuse. While at Syracuse, DeVito had 3,866 yards passing with 28 touchdowns.

As a member of the Fighting Illini, DeVito has 1,121 yards passing with 9 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. What Bielema saw at Syracuse was someone who just needs time to throw the ball, and it’s starting to pay dividends at Illinois.

“I saw a guy that when you gave him time and he wasn’t on his back, he was a very accurate passer,” said Bielema. “He’s got a live arm, understands the game. He’s really adapted very well, and he’s very exciting to watch.”

DeVito will be facing a very formidable offense with Iowa up next. We’ll see if the Illinois QB can keep things going with the Hawkeyes coming to town.

Syracuse BMX pump track officially opens on Sunday with competition and art market (PS; Struck)

Syracuse’s BMX pump track on the Westside will officially open on Sunday with a competition, raffle and art market.

More than 50 local vendors selling art, clothing, antiques and more will set up next to the pump track in Lipe Art Park, across from the Gear Factory on West Fayette Street. There will be a live painting, interactive art, a competition for cash and prizes on the track, and a raffle to fundraise for the park.

The competition will be open to anyone, so bring a bike. There’s no entry fee. Just register at the track when you arrive. The competition runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and prizes will be handed out at 5:30 p.m. Dirt Wolf Bicycle Repair will demonstrate tricks on the track.

The pump track was the brainchild of Near Westside locals and was funded by Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today and crowdfunding. Volunteers offered up construction equipment and helped build the track last year.

A fence required by the city was recently installed, so that means the track is officially open for business, although bikers have been using it for months.

Organizers plan to lay an asphalt cap on the pump track so that scooterers and skaters can use the track, too. Sunday’s raffle proceeds will go towards fundraising for the cap.

Go to the Pump Track SYR Instagram page for more information about the art market. Go to pumptracksyr.com to give feedback on the pump track.

Where: 1003 W. Fayette St., Syracuse
When: Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
How much: Free to attend
