Hale: Ceiling for Syracuse football could be nine wins - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)
At the start of the 2022 football season, if someone had told you Syracuse was going to go 6-6 and head to the postseason, most of you would’ve taken that proposition in a heartbeat. After all, Syracuse was a combined 11-24 in the past three seasons and head coach Dino Babers was getting close to being on the hot seat.
Of course, the expectations have shifted since September. The Orange is now 5-0 and ranked in both the AP (22) and Coach’s (21) polls. But can Syracuse stay in the rankings? After its upcoming bye, the Orange plays six consecutive games against teams that are either ranked, or were recently ranked. It will provide a test into how good the Orange is after beating five teams that have been unranked.
And that’s exactly what we chatted about with ESPN ACC reporter David Hale in this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv. Hale sees a path for the Orange to get to as many as nine regular season wins if they can win one of its next three against No. 14 NC State, No. 5 Clemson and currently unranked Notre Dame. Those three games will prove to be a barometer for Syracuse’s final win total, Hale says. Hale adds that Syracuse should be in every one of these three games, even if its talent doesn’t quick stack up. That’s because this is one of Syracuse’s deepest teams in years.

Axe: John Wildhack’s bet on Dino Babers is paying off (so far) in 2022 (PS; $; Axe)
Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack didn’t wake up feeling dangerous on Thursday.
At a press conference in the Iocolano-Petty Football Wing Auditorium, Wildhack kept his answers close to the vest and milquetoast on a variety of topics, including the status of his head football coach.
It was a different tone than the strong backing Wildhack gave Dino Babers, unprompted, in a press conference back in June when he proclaimed that his head football coach was not on the hot seat.
A 5-0 start tends to cool off such talk.
Wildhack wasn’t in the mood to brag about that on Thursday. It was time to spread out the credit as far as it could go.
“The offseason was really good,” Wildhack said on Thursday. “Winter conditioning, spring ball, camp. That’s carried over into the fall. It’s a credit to the entire staff. Not just the coaching staff. It’s the support staff. It’s strength and conditioning. It’s sports medicine. Our athletic training staff. Academic advising. Across the board. They all deserve credit for being 5-0.”
After Syracuse’s electric 10-3 season in 2018, Babers only winning season at Syracuse to date, he was rewarded with a contract extension.
Asked on Thursday if the topic of another extension has been broached, Wildhack swiped one right out of the football coach cliche playbook.

Syracuse Football: Orange’s defense, aka the Mob, is all kinds of nasty (itlh; Adler)
A season ago, when Syracuse football went 5-7 overall and missed out on a bowl-game invite by dropping its final three games, the Orange defense forced seven turnovers, while the ‘Cuse committed a dozen turnovers of its own.
Fast-forward to the present, and the Orange (5-0) has already matched its victory total from 2021. The team’s defense, known as the Mob, has forced nine turnovers in the 2022 campaign, with seven games left in the regular season, while Syracuse football has committed just four turnovers of its own.
That kind of marked improvement is huge for a couple of reasons. Number one, when the Orange defense makes an interception or recovers a fumble, that is likely giving the squad’s offense a short field, thereby increasing scoring opportunities for Syracuse football.
And, not to state the obvious, but when the ‘Cuse is faring well in the takeaways department, that probably means the Orange defense is doing its part to prevent opponents from scoring. All in all, a win-win for the ‘Cuse.
The Syracuse football Mob defense is balling out these days.
Speaking of winning, the Orange’s Mob defense (a moniker that should get trademarked!) is playing at a really high level so far in 2022.Yes, the competition will get tougher moving forward, but ‘Cuse fans should absolutely be pleased with what the team’s defense is doing at this point in the season.

Orange Watch: Syracuse should add two more to Ring of Honor - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: Syracuse athletics announced last week that three of the five inaugural members of the school’s Ring of Honor within the JMA Wireless Dome, will be officially saluted at intermission of the North Carolina State football game on October 15 (3:30 p.m. ET / ACC Network). The trio of Number 44 legends Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little will be honored by family representatives, school administrators, and hopefully a large turnout of spectators during the halftime festivities. Those three join Jim Boeheim, Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, and Roy Simmons Jr. with their names emblazoned on the façade just below the suite seating on the north side of the building. We have a nomination for the next two deserving names to join that exclusive group.
As per the university release announcing the October 15 ceremony, “the Ring of Honor (established in pandemic-plagued 2020) is an honor bestowed upon individuals named as one of Syracuse University’s most outstanding student-athletes or coaches to compete and/or coach their associated collegiate sport.”
When you look at the Ring of Honor names listed inside the Dome you see the current six-members’ names beginning above seating Section 114 and extending left-to-right to Section 118. There’s a blank orange-painted facing that contains space to add a couple of more names over to Section 119.
Here’s a look at the careers of the two names we think should next appear on that facing as certified trailblazers of Syracuse athletics:
Floyd “Ben” Schwartzwalder
Like Boeheim did in building ‘Cuse basketball from a regional to national name, Coach Ben was the architect of the football program’s rise to national prominence between 1949-1973, and, of course, was the coach of Ring of Honor members Brown, Davis, and Little.
Syracuse football was down and out when Schwartzwalder, who grew up in West Virginia and graduated from WVU, took over the program in 1949, having won only 11 games in the previous five years at the tail end of World War II.
During the war, Schwartzwalder was a military hero, a paratrooper, part of the D-Day invasion in June 1944 fighting behind enemy lines. He earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Presidential Unit Citation.
Following a 4-5 campaign in ’49, Syracuse football would not have a losing season for the next 22 years, up to Schwartzwalder’s final two campaigns in 1972 and 1973.
In between, he led the Orangemen to their most glorious season in 1959, voted the national champions and capped off by a Cotton Bowl win over Texas, one of seven bowl games during his tenure as the school’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 153-91-3 (.626).

Brahim Wynn on Syracuse Visit: 'The Fan Support Was Great' (SI; McAllister)
One of the best prospects in New Jersey in the 2024 recruiting class is Sicklerville (NJ) Timber Creek athlete Brahim Wynn. Wynn is being looked at as an edge prospect by most schools, and already holds an offer from Temple. The 6-3, 215 pounder returned to the Syracuse campus over the weekend to watch the Orange face Wagner.
"It was great," Wynn said. "Being in the Dome in general was great. Something not a lot a people will ever get to experience. It was great. The Cuse played great and dominated on both sides of the ball. The fan support was great. You heard them roar every play and even showed me love even though I’m just a recruit."
During the visit, Wynn spoke to members of the Syracuse staff.
"I talked to coach MJ, the wide receivers coach because he recruits my area," Wynn said. "We were just catching up and he was letting me know that he was coming down to see me when they have the bye week. Coach Ahmad was fired up before the game. Love that guy."
Watching former New Jersey high school prospects flourish with the Orange only enhanced Wynn's interest in Syracuse.

Syracuse Football: Throwback to 1987 when Orange defeated Missouri (itlh; Nutting)
We open the vault to the Orange’s special 1987 season, when Syracuse football took on the Missouri Tigers and eyed a 5-0 start to that campaign.
On October 3rd, 1987, the Syracuse football team took on the Missouri Tigers, as the Orange were looking to go 5-0 after getting a 35-21 win against Virginia Tech the previous week.
This Orange team was being led by head coach Dick MacPherson and quarterback Don McPherson, who was having a season to remember up to this point.
PAST
The Orange would get a dominating win over the Missouri Tigers in a 24-13 win in Missouri. They would force five turnovers and would finish with five sacks on Tigers starting quarterback John Stollenwerck. The combination of Don McPherson and Rob Moore would connect on a 71-yard touchdown pass and Robert Drummond would score a one-yard rushing touchdown to secure the win for the Orange.
This win would add to the Syracuse football season as they would go 11-0-1 on the season, with the only tie coming in the 1987 Sugar Bowl when they would tie with the Auburn Tigers, 16-16. McPherson would finish second in the Heisman voting and would be selected in the 6th round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
FUTURE
The 2022 Syracuse football team is currently sitting at 5-0 for the first time in 35 years. This team is being led by head coach Dino Babers, quarterback Garrett Shrader, and running back Sean Tucker. The Orange would defeat the Louisville Cardinals, Connecticut Huskies, Purdue Boilermakers, Virginia Cavaliers, and Wager Seahawks.

Throughout the first five weeks of Syracuse football, the Orange have been through many highs, and a few lows. The 5-0 record is a great accomplishment, and the high-flying SU passing offense has been the antithesis of last year’s Sterlin Gilbert slog. However, there have been nail-biting moments, head-scratchers and injuries. Not everything has been hunky-dory. Let’s check out the largest rise and fall of the first portion of the ‘Cuse season.
TO THE MOON
Oronde Gadsden IIThe sophomore has 23 receptions for 366 yards and three touchdowns, after just two catches last year. His transition to “flex-wide” (aka big guy playing in the slot) has been a massive success for Robert Anae. Gadsden is too big for safeties to cover over the middle, and too fast for linebackers to chase down the field. With defenses starting to key in on the 6-foot-5 wideout, expect Anae to find new ways to get Gadsden involved.

DepthThe Orange need a M*A*S*H unit, stat. Four starters (Elmore, Isaiah Jones, Lockett, Thompson) are out for the year with injuries, and Thompson’s replacement Derek McDonald has missed the past two weeks with an undisclosed injury. An apparent illness swept through the team before the Purdue game, Trebor Peña missed the Purdue contest as well and Ja’Had Carter and Alijah Clark missed parts of the Virginia game. Unfortunately, SU is not a program which can replace starters with skilled, veteran backups. Health will be key down the stretch against bigger, faster teams.
OTHER RISERS
Alijah ClarkThe Rutgers transfer has quietly been one of the best defensive backs on the SU unit. Coming in as a corner, Clark made the switch to safety and was a day one starter. He’s got 17 total tackles through five games, and has shown a tendency to lay the big hit now and then. As long as he can stay healthy, Clark should be a major contributor for the next two years.

1997 Syracuse football rewind: Orange rout East Carolina 56-0 (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange entered week six with an unexpected record of 2-3. The hopes of a special season seemed to be gone but the Orange still had time to right the ship. Up next were the East Carolina Pirates.
Donovan McNabb made sure that the Orange got off to a fast start in this game. McNabb ran for two first-half touchdowns and hit Quinton Spotwood for a 94-yard touchdown pass. Syracuse went into the half with a 21-0 lead and never let up in the final thirty minutes.
Donovin Darius got an interception to start the second half and the Orange cashed in with a 26-yard Rob Konrad touchdown run. The Syracuse defense got another stop and Spotwood brought back the ECU punt 80 yards for his 3rd punt return touchdown on the season.
McNabb finished the day 5-7 and left the game in third quarter. His backup Keith Downing threw a touchdown pass and ran for another before Jason Poles’ fumble return capped the scoring.

Wildhack: Over 40,000 tickets have been sold for N.C. State game (PS; $; Leiker)
Syracuse football’s next home game could be its largest turnout of the season thus far.
SU athletic director John Wildhack said Thursday there are already “over 40,000″ tickets sold for No. 22 Syracuse’s game against No. 14 N.C. State at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the JMA Wireless Dome.
“We have an opportunity to have incredible home-field advantage,” Wildhack said. “Our fans, they could have a direct impact on the game. There’s no question. We want this to be one of the more difficult environments to play in.”
Wildhack also said Syracuse’s second-to-last home game of the season against Notre Dame on Oct. 29 is selling “really well.”
Attendance at SU games has declined ever since 37,110 people watched the Orange beat Louisville 31-7 in its season opener. Last weekend, only 33,373 were in attendance for Syracuse’s shutout win over Wagner on Orange Central weekend.
SU was ranked for the first time since 2019 in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll for Week 6 at No. 22 and No. 21, respectively. Should both the Orange and N.C. State remain ranked for Week 7, it will be the first time in 21 years that two ranked football programs face off in the Dome.
The back half of Syracuse’s season is decidedly more difficult than its first half.
SU travels to No. 5 Clemson after hosting N.C. State and No. 15 Wake Forest later in the season. It also hosts a previously ranked Florida State and hits the road for its annual divisional crossover against Pittsburgh.

Week 5 of the college football season brought out the true identities of many ACC programs. We saw teams move up and down the top 25 rankings while having an unexpected newcomer.
Syracuse Has Best Start Since 1987
The Syracuse Orange have had a tremendous start to this college football season. The Orange are 5-0 for the first time since 1987. They sit at the 22nd spot in the rankings and have a much-deserved bye week. When they return in Week 7, they will be met with their toughest challenge of the season so far. The Orange will be hosting the 14th-ranked NC State Wolfpack who just went down to the wire with Clemson. Syracuses’ key so far has been their star running back Sean Tucker. Tucker is leading the ACC in rushing, averaging 109 rushing yards per game.3 Other ACC Teams Are Ranked
Clemson, NC State, and Wake Forest all remain ranked in the top 25. Clemson kept the fifth spot after their incredible performance against the NC State Wolfpack. The Tigers are putting up great quarterback play by DJ Uiagalelei and their defensive front seven is dominant.NC State only fell four spots after their loss to Clemson. The AP voters took into account the difficulty of playing at Death Valley. They did recognize that the Wolfpack fought for the entirety of the game and gave Clemson a run for their money.
Wake Forest moved up seven spots after defeating, at the time, the 23rd-ranked Florida State Seminoles. The Demon Deacons took a commanding lead from the get-go and never looked back. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns in a great performance.
FSU and Pitt Drop From Rankings
After starting the season 4-0, Florida State made its way into the top 25. There was some pushback on their placement in the rankings because they hadn’t beaten any good teams. In week 5, they faced their first true test, Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons controlled the game from the get-go and exploited the Seminoles’ defense. After suffering a 10mpoint loss at home, FSU would be dropped from the rankings.Pitt had a solid start to the season, winning three games and losing to a talented Tennesse team. However, in week 5, the Panthers were upset by a one-win Georgia Tech team at home. Pitt’s offense made a last-minute effort in the fourth quarter, but Georgia Tech was able to put more points on the board to secure the victory. The Panthers are now unranked and have yet to win against an ACC opponent.

The North Carolina Tar Heels get their shot at the preseason pick to win the ACC Coastal Division on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium (4 p.m., ESPN2).
UNC (4-1, 1-0) heads to the Sunshine State for a meeting with Miami (2-2, 0-0), which was tabbed the Coastal favorite over defending champion Pittsburgh in August. The voting reflected a strong finish to 2021 in which the Hurricanes won five of their last six and the excitement about new head coach Mario Cristobal.
A former Miami offensive lineman, Cristobal is regarded as one of the best young coaches in the college game. But the Hurricanes haven't exactly had the best of starts under Cristobal, and a 45-31 loss in their last outing Sept. 24 against Middle Tennessee State was considered an epic failure.
North Carolina, picked to finish third in the Coastal, owns a three-game winning streak against Miami. An interception by UNC linebacker Cedric Gray in the final minute last season helped the Tar Heels win 45-42 in Chapel Hill.

Six conference games highlight week six of the ACC schedule, including five divisional games. In Atlantic Division action, Clemson plays at Boston College and Florida State travels to NC State. In Coastal Division games, Virginia Tech plays at Pitt, Georgia Tech hosts Duke and North Carolina travels to Miami. The lone cross-division game is Louisville at Virginia.No. 5 Clemson and No. 22 Syracuse are two of the 16 remaining FBS undefeated teams in the country. Clemson is 5-0 for the seventh time in the last eight years, after a 30-20 win Saturday over No. 10 NC State. Louisville at Virginia (Noon/ACCN) kicks off the weekend. Virginia’s one-point win at Louisville last season was the Cavaliers’ second straight versus the Cardinals and tied the series at 5-5. Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong, who led a comeback from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit in last year’s game, is just one TD pass shy of tying Matt Schaub for the school career record of 56. Louisville’s Malik Cunningham is just three TDs shy of tying Lamar Jackson for the ACC record of rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

I'm getting comments from Big XII fans calling foul because my previous post included non-conference games - and the ACC had better OOC games than the Big XII. If we ignore the fact that this isn't the ACC's fault for a moment, it leaves the question: what would it look like if we only considered in-conference games?
Here are the TV viewership numbers (in millions of viewers) for the top conference games involving two teams from either the ACC, the "new" Big XII, or the "new" Pac-10:

The promise of chip fab prosperity is real. Micron Technology’s plan to build a mammoth semiconductor fabrication campus near Syracuse should create thousands and thousands of high-paying tech jobs and lift the region’s fortunes in a way not seen for decades, national experts say.
But there is one major stumbling block that could slow that progress: Who will fill all those jobs?
The work of a chip fab – etching 8 billion tiny transistors onto a silicon memory chip the size of a fingernail – is specialized, to put it mildly. That doesn’t mean it requires a Ph.D. – some of the jobs do, but many can be done without a college degree – but every position requires some level of specialized training.
Even the construction jobs to build the facilities require special training.
Now that Micron has committed to build as many as four of the nation’s largest cleanroom facilities in the town of Clay – each the size of 10 football fields – job No. 1 for Central New York leaders is to develop a training ecosystem to supply the chip fabs with workers.
That means high schools, community colleges and universities working in unison to prepare students for careers at Micron and related businesses, said Mike Russo, president and CEO at the National Institute for Innovation and Technology, a government-funded nonprofit that facilitates work force development for semiconductor companies.
“They should look at it as a generational change for that region, and really bring together a concerted effort to develop that talent pipeline,’’ Russo said.
Micron announced Tuesday that over the next 20 years it plans to spend up to $100 billion – with a B – and build as many as four huge chip fabs at Onondaga County’s 1,400-acre business park in Clay. If fully built, the fabs could employ up to 9,000 people making an average of $100,000 each. They would create some 40,000 other jobs among suppliers, construction firms and other businesses.
