Welcome to Carl Sagan Day!

Carl Sagan Day celebrates the life, teachings, and legacy of Carl Sagan, who was born on this day in 1934, and who is known for his many contributions to science. The day was created in 2009 by the Center For Inquiry in Fort Lauderdale, as well Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists (FLASH), and other groups. Events have been held in Florida, but also have spread around the world. Some examples of events that have taken place are star parties—where people come together and view the sky, astronomy lectures, science fairs, and workshops.

Film review: Weak rush defense leads to loss against Pitt (DO; Cirino)

Syracuse didn’t score a touchdown for the first time this season, dropping its third straight game in a 19-9 loss to unranked Pittsburgh. On top of their lowest of total offensive yards this season, the Orange allowed 161 yards on the ground.

The Panthers averaged 3.4 yards per carry and finished the game with 136 more rushing yards than Syracuse. All Pittsburgh needed were two touchdowns to defeat the Orange, which came on the ground by Rodney Hammond Jr. and C’Bo Flemister, who recorded 124 and 42 yards, respectively — both career highs.

“If a team runs the ball that much, something’s gonna give. Yards are gonna happen,” Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax said.

Here’s how Pittsburgh dismantled Syracuse’s rushing defense on Saturday:

Pitt opens the gap, Hammond delivers

Hammond’s knack for taking advantage of gaps within Syracuse’s defense began in the second quarter. Prior to the snap on 2nd-and-5, Pitt’s Karter Johnson and Trey Andersen simultaneously swung over to the right side of the Panthers’ line, forcing Wax to step up to the line of scrimmage while Derek McDonald fell back to the second level.

McDonald was in the perfect position to make the play after moving back, but he shot up to fill the gap. This allowed for Pitt offensive lineman Marcus Minor to easily flush out McDonald. Meanwhile Hammond reached the first down plus another five yards before Duce Chestnut brought him down just shy of midfield.

The Orange’s 3-3-5 defensive lineup in this situation was obsolete as the Panthers had seven players on the line. Bringing Wax up to the line helped with the pressure, but Syracuse is going to lose this battle every time.

Syracuse football: Week 10 grades vs Pitt (TNIAAM; De Guzman)

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Syracuse Orange are in the middle of its toughest stretch on the schedule, and that led to their third straight loss of the season. That came at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers, who read the scouting report and proceeded to run the ball all day long. That was just enough to edge out a win over a banged up Orange team.

Let’s dive into the grades.

Quarterbacks: D

There’s a lot of blind optimism here, because I like Carlos Del Rio-Wilson’s game a lot. He shows a lot of potential to his game which, in theory, could allow future Syracuse teams to diversify the offense at many levels. However, he is still a quarterback making his first collegiate start after sparse action over the past two years. Those struggles appeared against an aggressive defense whose aim was to make him uncomfortable.

Tucker has looked less explosive this season. The numbers back that up (Tucker Tracker) (PS; $; Leiker)

Anyone watching Syracuse football this season will tell you something has seemed off about Sean Tucker.

The running back says he’s healthy. SU coach Dino Babers backed that up again Monday, stating Tucker is “full speed, and he’s our starting tailback.”

Despite that, there haven’t been many memorable Tucker moments from the player the school touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate before the season.

It’s felt like weeks since Tucker has had a large impact on the outcome of a game, and besides popping off in easy wins against Connecticut and Wagner, he’s only had one other 100-yard performance.

The numbers back that feeling up. Tucker hasn’t been as explosive in 2022 as he was during a record-setting season in 2021.

“I would say just overall (I’m) not where I wanna be,” Tucker said Tuesday.

Syracuse’s offense in general, believe it or not, hasn’t been as explosive, either.

A “big play,” as defined by StatBroadcast, one of several live stats websites for sporting events, is any gain of 10 yards or more on the ground and 15 yards or more through the air. What counts as a big or explosive play varies slightly by which site is being referenced.

FSU Football Practice Clips | Syracuse Week | Jared Verse | Trey Benson | Jordan Travis (youtube; video; 247)

Florida State held their Tuesday practice of Syracuse week this morning and Noles247 was on-site to capture the first few periods of action on video. Head coach Mike Norvell was full of energy as practice kicked off. Jared Verse looked ready to get after it after an impressive performance against Miami. All things seem fine on the Sam McCall front as he was seen returning kicks for the Seminoles in practice today

Florida State football to maintain focus on matchup with Syracuse (wtxl.com; Staff)

The Florida State football team is enjoying the start to this new week, now back inside the top 25 and bowl eligible following their 42-point win over Miami.

It was a big weekend for a team hoping to win out, but you ask Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell, his guys have no plans of looking too far ahead, as they will see a tough Syracuse squad this weekend and the Orange have their full attention.

"I can't talk to you about two weeks from now, or three weeks from now or any of that, but I know that we can control this week," said Norvell. "That is what I want to see, and that is what this team knows we need to do because this is a great challenge that is ahead on Saturday and for us it is about being our best when we get to that point, but we have to capitalize on every day this week."

And that matchup with the Orange is set for Saturday night up in New York, with kickoff set for 8 p.m.

Syracuse football: what are they saying about the Orange after week 10? (TNIAAM; Wall)

Each week, we’ll take a look at what other college football media sites are saying about the Syracuse Orange. After three straight losses, probably not a lot of good things.

AP and Coaches Poll

Syracuse dropped out of both polls this week. The Florida State Seminoles are 25th in the AP Poll so if the Orange can defend home field, maybe they sneak back in?

ESPN

In this week’s SP+ rankings Syracuse drops ten spots to 58th with the offense 77th while the defense moves up to 36th. The Orange are ranked between East Carolina and James Madison. This week’s opponent, Florida State ranks 27th with their offense 38th and defense 26th.

The Football Power Index has Syracuse down four spots to 35th between NC State and Wake Forest. The FPI now predicts that the Orange will reach 7 wins this season. Florida State is 17th in FPI this week.

Syracuse.com

This week the Orange drop two to 6th in the weekly ACC rankings in between Florida State and Louisville.

CBS Sports

In the CBS Sports power rankings Syracuse is down twelve spots this week and now sits 34th between Kentucky and Oklahoma State. Florida State is 23rd this week.

As Syracuse drops out of the CFP Top 25, its Week 11 opponent moves in (PS; Leiker)

The last number has fallen off Syracuse football’s title.

The Orange are no longer ranked in any college football polls following a 19-9 loss to Pittsburgh, its third straight of the season after starting 6-0.

SU dropped out of the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll on Sunday. It also fell out of the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday after sitting in the No. 20 spot last week.

The top four teams in the poll are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU, in that order. Tennessee and Oregon were the first two teams out. The Top 10 was rounding out by LSU, University of Southern California, Alabama and Clemson.

Four ACC teams remain ranked. Wake Forest also dropped out of the poll following a 30-21 loss against N.C. State.

After a 35-14 loss to Notre Dame, now No. 20 in the rankings, Clemson dropped six spots to No. 10. The Tigers held a playoff spot at No. 4 in the first week of the rankings but will now likely be the ACC’s contender in the Orange Bowl.

UNC moved up two spots into No. 15, and N.C. State rose six spots to No. 16 after its win over Wake Forest with freshman quarterback MJ Morris.

Florida State, fresh off its second 40-point win over an ACC foe, made its debut in the CFP rankings at No. 22. That’s three spots higher than it is currently ranked in the AP poll.

Jake Crouthamel (left) Nelson Rockefeller (right; I think)

A tribute to former Syracuse athletics director Jake Crouthamel - The Juice Online (the juice; Salamone)

Former Syracuse athletics director Jake Crouthamel passed away at the age of 84 on Monday. He was Syracuse’s AD from 1978 through 2005, and oversaw several milestones for the athletics program, including the opening of the Carrier Dome in 1980, and golden eras in Syracuse basketball, football and lacrosse.

I first met Jake back in 1992 when we started The Big Orange (later The Juice), an independent publication devoted to the coverage of Syracuse University athletics. We sat in his office surrounded by a plume of smoke (Jake loved his cigarettes) to discuss our new endeavor.

He didn’t say much, nodded his head and wished us luck. I wasn’t sure what to think of our initial meeting, but looking back, he truly wanted us to succeed and was always supportive. Through the years, I got to know Jake.

Two memories come to mind that embodied his personality—intense—and dry sense of humor.

During football games, Jake sat in the first row of the pressbox next to Joe Szombathy, Director of the Orange Pack.

I was always in the second row to his left. Every game, Jake would have a cup of coffee (at least that’s what I think it was) and he would stir it feverishly—maybe a nervous type of energy.

A bad play by the Orange, and Jake would pound his fist on the table. Joe’s expressions were sometimes better than watching the game.

One game, Jake was so upset, he picked up his chair and threw it. It didn’t hit anyone, and really didn’t go far, but it was enough that people took notice.

Said Joe after the game:”Next game I’m sitting next to you, Judy.”

A second anecdote came to mind when I heard the news.

Opining on the man who saved Syracuse sports, a familiar face at Oak Hill & Josh Allen’s scary injury | Rochester Business Journal (rbj.net; Pitoniak)

Jake Crouthamel died Monday at age 84, and to fully appreciate his impact on Syracuse University athletics, one must journey back to his arrival on campus in March 1978.

At that time, the sports landscape at SU was desolate by today’s standards. The obstacles Crouthamel faced were the equivalent of fourth-and-forever. A standout football player and coach at Dartmouth College who played professionally for the Boston Patriots, Crouthamel realized from the get-go that the future success of Orange athletics would depend on his ability to upgrade deteriorating facilities and resuscitate a football program that was on life support.

Archbold Stadium, the concrete bowl that had been home to Syracuse football for nearly seven decades, had become such an eyesore that coaches stopped showing it to recruits visiting campus. The stadium’s antiquated locker rooms, which occasionally were visited by football-sized rats, was also off-limits to prospective student athletes.

Crouthamel, along with then-football coach Frank Maloney, bluntly told SU’s administration the program could not survive without a new stadium, and, fortunately, then-Chancellor Melvin Eggers and local and state officials listened. The instant the Carrier Dome opened on the same site as “Old Archie” in 1980, Crouthamel realized the building’s potential as a catalyst for an athletic renaissance, and he acted on it.

By the time Crouthamel retired in 2005 after 27 years, his imprint could be seen throughout campus – from the Dome to the additions and renovations at Manley Field House and beyond. But he did more than build buildings. He built a winning tradition. He hired superb coaches like Dick MacPherson, Paul Pasqualoni and John Desko and stuck with them. He was a powerful advocate for the formation of the immensely successful Big East Conference.

Under Crouthamel’s leadership the Orange won 10 national championships (nine in men’s lacrosse and the 2003 NCAA men’s basketball title) and 22 conference crowns. The once moribund football program went to 14 bowl games, winning nine of them. He was a driving force in moving home basketball games from Manley to the Dome, and Syracuse wound up becoming the national attendance leader, with crowds of 30,000 commonplace.

“His fingerprints are on just about everything sports-wise here,’’ basketball coach Jim Boeheim told me at the time of Crouthamel’s retirement. “He has been about as loyal and significant a figure as any athlete or coach in school history. Jake has done a fantastic job of putting not only our athletic programs but the entire university on the map.”

Around the Northeast CFB: Penn State bounces back; Syracuse plummeting (dailycampus.com; Calhoun)

It was a crazy Week 10 in college football. Even though the whole article could talk about games all across the country, we’ll once again focus on the Northeast teams.

Duke bowl eligible for first time since 2018 with win over Boston College, 38-31

The Blue Devils are bowl eligible. Duke has not been known as a strong football team in the ACC for many years, but they are bowl eligible, edging the 2-7 Eagles on the road. Blue Devils quarterback Riley Leonard led the team in passing and rushing, with 254 total yards (including 96 rushing yards) and two total touchdowns. Running back Jaquez Moore had 105 all-purpose yards and two rushing trips to the end zone. Linebacker Shaka Hayward recorded his first sack of the season, along with 11 total tackles and eight solo tackles. Darius Joiner and DeWayne Carter each had two sacks in the win. Due to an injury, Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovic sat while freshman Emmett Morehead started. Morehead had a phenomenal game, passing for 330 yards and four touchdowns. That includes two scores to both Joseph Griffin and Zay Flowers, with Griffin recording 103 receiving yards. The Eagles look to put that four-game skid to an end, but that could be tough with a battle against NC State looming this weekend.

No. 5 Michigan dominates second half, defeats Rutgers to stay undefeated, 52-17

The question everyone is asking is: “who is the best team in the Big Ten, Ohio State or Michigan?” If you watched the second half of the Michigan-Rutgers game, you would have to say the Wolverines. At the break, Rutgers led 17-14, but Michigan scored five touchdowns and a field goal with no answer from the Scarlet Knights in the second half. Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy passed for 151 yards and found the end zone either in the air or on the ground a combined three times. Heisman Trophy candidate Blake Corum rushed for 109 yards and two scores, while Isaiah Gash rushed in for a three-yard touchdown. Donovan Edwards was the top receiver with 52 yards and a touchdown, while Cornelius Johnson scored on the receiving end as well. Michael Barrett had two interceptions, including a pick-six. Will Johnson picked off Gavin Wimsatt as well. Wimsatt had three interceptions, passing for 166 yards and a touchdown. Timmy Ward returned a punt seven yards for the other touchdown. Rutgers will now fly to Michigan, but this time in East Lansing, where Michigan State awaits them on Saturday.

GAME NINE: PENN STATE 45, INDIANA 14 PIC.TWITTER.COM/ZIFEED8XJU
— Penn State Football (@PennStateFball) November 8, 2022

No. 15 Penn State stomps Indiana in Bloomington, 45-14

After a tough loss at home against Ohio State, the Nittany Lions sought to get back in the win column against Indiana. Together, running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton looked as dominant as former Nittany Lion Saquon Barkley did alone, rushing for 159 yards and four touchdowns. Allen had 158 total yards, as he led Penn State in receiving on two catches. Theo Johnson and Harrison Wallace III caught each of Drew Allar’s passing touchdowns. Sean Clifford did play, passing for 229 yards and one interception. Allar had 75 yards on 9-for-12 passing. The defense had a school-record 16 tackles for loss, with six sacks. Linebacker Kobe King had 2.5 tackles for loss, with eight total tackles and five solo tackles. That’s not all Penn State’s defense did, picking off Dexter Williams II twice and Brendan Sorsby once. The Hoosiers used those two as quarterback, but mainly Jack Tuttle, who passed for 82 yards and a touchdown. Jaylin Lucas rushed for a one-yard score late in the game, but the damage was already done. Penn State returns to Happy Valley, where they host Maryland mid-afternoon Saturday.

No. 20 Syracuse on three-game losing streak, falling to Pittsburgh, 19-9

Syracuse has not won a game since Oct. 15. That’s nearly a month ago. In that span, they’ve lost to Clemson, Notre Dame and now Pittsburgh. The Orange were without Garrett Shrader, so Carlos Del Rio-Wilson started at quarterback. He had more rushing attempts than Sean Tucker, who was certainly not pleased with his performance. That just shows how poorly Syracuse’s offense played, as all of their nine points came from kicker Andre Szmyt. They had an interception off Kedon Slovis and Jared Wayne each. Slovis passed for 176 yards and did not find the end zone. Wayne, who led the team in receiving with 102 yards, will most likely not be passing on a trick play in the near future, as his only attempt was a pick. Rodney Hammond Jr. rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown, showing how good the Panthers are on the ground with Israel Abanikanda out. Syracuse will look to put their skid to an end at home against Florida State, while Pitt travels to Charlottesville to take on Virginia.

Wake Forest season projections updated by ESPN's FPI - Nov. 9 (SI; Remis)

When Wake Forest was winning, these were a lot more fun to write. Once again, the Football Power Index (FPI) has correctly predicted a loss when the sportsbooks had the Deacs as favorites. After predicting Louisville's home upset a week ago, FPI correctly forecasted a home victory for NC State against the higher-ranked Demon Deacons on Saturday.

After a chaotic weekend of college football, FPI has updated their rankings and predictions for the rest of the season. Surprisingly, Wake Forest stays put at 36 in the country, with no change from their ranking last week. This reflects the closeness of the game in Raleigh, FPI’s high valuation of NC State (up three spots to 34), and FPI’s successful prediction of the outcome of the game. While Wake Forest fans have reacted quite negatively to the disappointing loss, the metrics are holding constant.

The one big change, however, is how Wake Forest projects to finish the season. FPI’s predicted record for the Deacs has dropped from 8.1-3.9 all the way down to 7.7-4.3. FPI only gives Wake Forest a 17.2% chance of winning each of their remaining games.

FPI’s ACC rankings are quite fascinating to look at. Clemson remains number one (eighth in the country), but Florida State has jumped up to the number two spot (17 overall). The 6-3 Louisville Cardinals sit third (23), followed by UNC, NC State, and Syracuse. At the other end, it’s no surprise to see Boston College last (98 in the country), barely behind Virginia Tech (94), Georgia Tech, (88), and Virginia (76). The ACC now has the least teams in the top 25 of any Power Five conference and the most teams outside the top 50.

Even so, the schedule for Wake Forest does not get any easier going forward. As the Demon Deacons get set to face yet another tough opponent, let's take a look at how the FPI model has shifted for the last few weeks of the 2022 season.

Saturday Nov. 12 - No. 15 NORTH CAROLINA (8-1)

FPI Breakdown:

ACC rank: 4 (5)
National rank: 28 (32)
Projected Record: 10.2-2.8 (9.9-3.1)

Wake Forest Win Probability: 54.2%
Last week: 53.9%
Change: +0.3%

Saturday Nov. 19 - SYRACUSE (6-3)

ACC rank: 6 (4)
National rank: 35 (31)
Projected Record: 7.7-4.3 (8.4-3.6)

Wake Forest Win Probability: 57.6%
Last week: 55.2%
Change: +2.4%

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Orange. After losing a close battle against Clemson, Syracuse failed to rebound against Notre Dame.” That’s what I wrote last week about Dino Babers and his Syracuse football team– this week, it’s only gotten worse. The Orange were dominated 19-9 at Pitt over the weekend, recording only 145 total yards on offense. After a 6-0 start, the wheels have completely come off the wagon for Syracuse– with a matchup against Florida State this weekend before traveling to Winston-Salem for an evening matchup on Senior Night, it’s likely the losing streak continues.

Is there Hope for the Hokies? What's wrong?

This turkey ain't goin' nowhere after Thanksgiving...

Virginia Tech is currently 2-7 and already eliminated from bowl eligibility for the 2022 season. This is shaping up to be possibly the worst season since 1992 for the Hokies (They went 2-8-1 that year).

It would be easy to say that new Head Coach Brent Pry and his staff have been a complete bust - or, at the very least, that there are "concerning warning signs". I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned myself! However, fellow blogger "Treadmill Horse" tweeted a little sanity-check for the rest of us:

FSU football earns College Football Playoff ranking (tomahawknation.com; Kostidakis)

After dominating rival Miami 45-3, securing bowl eligibility and reappearing in the AP Top 25, Florida State Seminoles football (6-3, 4-3 ACC) has found its way into the College Football Playoff rankings.

FSU has had an up-and-down year, mostly highlighted by success — starting off 4-0, faltering to three straight-ranked opponents in the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-3, 2-3 ACC), NC State Wolfpack (7-2, 3-2 ACC), and the Clemson Tigers (8-1, 6-1 ACC), then blowing out the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (4-5, 3-3 ACC) and Miami Hurricanes (4-5, 2-3 ACC) in consecutive weeks.

In the second edition of the 2022 rankings, the Playoff Committee has slotted Florida State at No. 23.

FSU has put together one of the most explosive offenses in the country, a balanced rushing and passing attack led by a significantly-improved Jordan Travis, who has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC and arguably, the country. Florida State is now No. 1 in the country in 20+ yard plays, having logged 69 on the season (62 vs. Power 5 competition.) According to FSU Sports Info, Florida State is one of four teams in the country (and the only team in the ACC) averaging at least 270 yards of passing offense and at least 210 yards of rushing offense per game this season.

Mike Norvell looks back on Jared Verse's performance against Syracuse last year (on3.com; McVeigh)

Returning Florida State players are not the only ones who celebrated a victory over Syracuse last season. Star defensive end Jared Verse did so with Albany, putting on one of his better performances. The Orange will have to deal with Verse once again on Saturday but this time, in a Seminoles uniform.

Head coach Mike Norvell was asked what he remembered about Verse’s performance at the then-Carrier Dome last season. He recalled one play where the defensive end ran with Syracuse running back Sean Tucker after he began to break free. Overall, Norvell was impressed with the “flashes” shown by Verse against Power Five competition at an FCS level.

“It wasn’t something I ultimately studied last year but I remember the flashes I saw that I saw,” Norvell said. “One of the plays that stood out to me was (Sean) Tucker broke out on a long run and Jared, you just saw him open up and run. It was impressive to see a big guy who ran and pursued the ball the way he did. His physicality — I think he had a sack in the game. Just very active.”

Links, News and Rumors 2022 Nov 8th

It's that time of year... overlapping sports seasons!

First, let's acknowledge the fact that basketball season began last night. Most teams won easily against soft competition - with two exceptions;

  • Florida State lost at home to Stetson 74-83.
  • Boston College struggled to beat Cornel 79-77.
The first power matchup comes Friday night when Clemson visits South Carolina (7:00 PM, RSN). We won't get another one until Pitt meets Michigan in the Legends Classic next Wednesday (6:00 PM, ESPNU).
__________
From the SI:AM newsletter of Monday, November 7th, 2022...

No Alabama, no Clemson
For as long as it has existed, Alabama and Clemson have basically been guaranteed spots in the College Football Playoff. Not this year... after a wild Saturday in college football, both teams appear destined to miss out on a championship opportunity...
The Tigers’ résumé wasn’t particularly strong. Their best wins were a double-overtime victory over No. 21 Wake Forest and a comeback win at home over a Syracuse team that was ranked No. 14 at the time but has now lost three in a row. An undefeated but unimpressive Clemson would have posed a challenge for the committee at the end of the regular season...
For Alabama (7–2), two losses by a total of four points on the road against 8–1 Tennessee and 7–2 LSU is hardly a disaster. It could be argued that the Tide are two plays away from being undefeated. But it also could be argued that they are two plays away from being 5–4 after narrow escapes against Texas and Texas A&M. Split the difference in four 50-50 games and Bama probably has the record it deserves at this point...

Syracuse University makes historic choice for new board of trustees chair (PS; Cazentre)

Syracuse University this week named Jeffrey M. Scruggs as the next chair of its Board of Trustees.

Scruggs, a longtime executive at the Goldman Sachs investment banking firm in New York City, will become the first person of color to chair the university’s governing body, SU said in a news release. He will succeed current chair Kathleen A. Walters, whose term expires in May 2023.

The 49 voting members of the Board of Trustees chose Scruggs in a unanimous decision, the university said.

Scruggs has served as an SU trustee since 2018, and has been “a leading voice on issues related to finance and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility,” the SU news release said.

According to the university’s web site, the board “is the governing body of Syracuse University, responsible for the educational mission and fiscal policies of the University. Members of the Board guide the University toward its goals and vision and serve the public trust.”

Although he is not himself an SU graduate, Scruggs has a significant tie to university history: His father, Otey Scruggs, was a professor of history in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs from 1969 until his retirement in 1995, and was considered a pioneer in the field of African American history.

Jeffrey Scruggs holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from its business school. He has been with Goldman Sachs since 2008 after working in the finance industry at firms such as PaineWebber and UBS Securities for 20 years. At Goldman Sachs, he has served as the head or co-head of the firm’s Public Sector and Infrastructure Group.

“Jeff’s financial acumen is unmatched,” Walters, the outgoing chair, said in the news release. “But it is his generosity of spirit that has made him an outstanding trustee. He is committed to creating an extraordinary experience for each and every one of our students that honors the diversity of thoughts, perspectives and culture that each one brings to our community.”
