Welcome to Bacon Day!

According to the Bacon Day website, the day was created by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard. They came up with the day as a way to celebrate bacon and The Simpsons. In The Simpsons episode "I Love Lisa," Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?" This is how the creators of the day tied the celebration of two things they love together.

So what's the story of bacon? Bacon is a popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

SU News

LeQuint Allen made his first start in the Pinstripe Bowl. He’s already poised to be SU’s next star (PS; $; Leiker)

When LeQuint Allen was promoted to starting running back for Syracuse football this postseason, coach Dino Babers had to inform him he wouldn’t be playing anymore special teams.

“Coach, I can do all four,” Allen insisted.

“I know you can do all four,” Babers told him.

The true freshman thought that meant he’d convinced his coach to let him keep him on those units. That wasn’t the case. SU’s starting tailback wasn’t going to also be on the field for special teams. At a school that’s known for producing stars at the position, it’d be unwise to overuse the next big one when unnecessary.

Even just appearing on offense, Allen gave himself a firm head start on establishing a legacy at Syracuse with his performance in the Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday as the Orange looked toward the future in a far-from-perfect 28-20 loss to Minnesota.

“The way LeQuint played today, we saw him playing like that in August,” Babers said. “We saw him play like that when he was New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year. He’s always been that way.”

Allen finished the game with 15 carries for 94 yards with a long of 29 yards and an average of 6.3 yards per carry. And he did more than just run the ball — he caught it, too, logging a team-leading 11 receptions for 60 yards.

Gophers’ Game: SU loses to Minnesota in Pinstripe Bowl (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse football dominates in yards gained, but Gophers make big plays (itlh; Adler)

Suiting up in the team’s first bowl game since the 2018 season, Syracuse football was hoping to notch its 8th win of the 2022 term, but the Orange was missing a flood of its players when the ‘Cuse battled Big Ten Conference member Minnesota on Thursday afternoon in New York City.

A lot of young Orange players saw considerable action in the 2022 Pinstripe Bowl from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., and freshman running back LeQuint Allen Jr. showed that he should have a promising future on the Hill.

However, it’s brutally tough to replace guys such as running back Sean Tucker, linebacker Mikel Jones, cornerback Garrett Williams, cornerback Duce Chestnut, defensive back Ja’Had Carter and offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron, among others.

Numerous Syracuse football stars opted out of the bowl game, as they have declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. Other Orange players are in the NCAA’s transfer portal.

So I credit the ‘Cuse roster that did compete on Thursday in the Big Apple, but Syracuse football couldn’t muster up enough big plays to keep up with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota (9-4) would prevail, 28-20.

Syracuse football did manage to complete its 2022 stanza with a winning record.

With this setback, the Orange finishes at 7-6 after the ‘Cuse went 5-7 in 2021 and 1-10 in 2020. In the most recent season, Syracuse football jumped out to a 6-0 start and resided in the top-25 polls, but then the Orange proceeded to go 1-6 the rest of the way.

Against the Golden Gophers, Syracuse football held a massive advantage in total yards gained, at 477 to 213, according to ESPN statistics.

However, as the Orange clawed back from an initial 14-0 deficit to cut the margin to 14-10 in the third quarter, quarterback Garrett Shrader threw a dagger pick-six, making the score 21-10.

The ‘Cuse would collect a field goal, putting the game at 21-13. But then Minnesota would tally an extensive kick-off return and quickly score a touchdown to grow its lead to 28-13.

Syracuse football: Three takeaways from the Orange ’s 28-20 loss to Minnesota (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange have lost their four-game winning streak in bowls with a 28-20 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It was a winnable game throughout, with SU just not finishing off some crucial drives. That doesn’t mean there weren’t some positives to take away from the game and carry into the offseason.

Here’s what stood out the most:

LeQuint Allen Looks Legit

It seems that the Orange rushing attack is in good hands. With Sean Tucker going to the NFL, LeQuint Allen was favored to take his place as the bell cow, and he showed why today. Allen rushed 15 times for 94 yards (6.3 YPC) and added 11 catches for 60 more through the air, making the Gopher defense look silly at points with sharp cuts and a pair of 20+ yard dashes.

Keep in mind, he put up those numbers in what was a very pass-heavy day for Garrett Shrader. LeQuint’s certainly got the tools to succeed as a primary back, so keep an eye on his development through the spring.

Instant Juice: Syracuse 20, Minnesota 28 - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

A quick take on Syracuse’s 28-20 loss against Minnesota Thursday afternoon in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, on a sunny and seasonable late December day in front of announced crowd of 31,131 at Yankee Stadium:

WHAT HAPPENED: In the 12th all-time Pinstripe Bowl game, and the third involving Syracuse, the Orange had their bowl game winning streak snapped at four dating back to 2010, as two Minnesota touchdowns in the third quarter tilted the game. The Gophers jumped out to a 14-0 lead before SU scored late in the second quarter to trail 14-7 at halftime. In the pivotal third quarter Syracuse (7-6) could only muster two Andre Szmyt field goals (40 and 38 yards), while Minnesota (9-4) scored on a 70 yard interception return by Coleman Bryson of a Garrett Shrader pass, and a 25 yard scoring strike from Tanner Morgan to Daniel Jackson (two TD receptions on the day). That score followed a 72 yard kickoff return by UM’s Quentin Redding. Syracuse scored the only points in the fourth quarter to make it a one score game with 2:30 to play, but a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Alijah Clark allowed Minnesota to run out the clock. After starting 6-0, SU dropped six of its final seven games of the 2022 season.

ANALYSIS: Down 14-10 and driving midway in the third quarter, the game completely turned when Minnesota’s Bryson stepped in front of Shrader’s pass intended for Oronde Gadsden II on an out route and returned the pick 70 yards for a score to put the Gophers up 21-10, and it seemed to take the air out of any ‘Cuse comeback. Despite outgaining Minnesota by a large 465-208 margin in total yardage, Syracuse was just 7-of-15 on third down conversions, stalling out on several potential opportunities to score more points, along with a costly turnover. Shrader had an uneven game with 47 pass attempts (31 completions for 292 yards) and scoring both SU touchdowns. One bright spot was running back LeQuint Allen who gained 94 yards replacing the absent Sean Tucker, and caught 11 passes.

NC State football looks to close successful era with Duke's Mayo Bowl win vs Maryland (fayobserver.com; Thompson)

Bryson Speas hopped into an Uber Wednesday night with fellow offensive lineman Grant Gibson, Derrick Eason and Tim McKay for a quiet sushi dinner amidst the mayhem of bowl game preparation.

They had wanted to walk, but with Gibson, the sixth-year center on crutches, ridesharing was the best option. The four North Carolina State football players dined on California rolls and reflected on a 2022 season that had led to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl – an ultimate consolation prize considering the preseason hype surrounding the Wolfpack.

NC State (8-4) won eight games will four different quarterbacks and ended the regular season with a double-overtime win over UNC but failed to achieve its greatest goals: 10 wins for the second time ever, make the ACC title game or earn a place in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

In that moment, none of that mattered for Speas. This dinner was a tribute to friendship and brotherhood, a space where they could linger before life’s journey took them in separate directions.

“Those will always be my guys,” Speas said. “But yeah, after this, everything changes. It’s crazy how fast everything goes.”

It was that sense of closure that hovered over the Charlotte convention floor Thursday as the Wolfpack (8-4) gear up for one final game against former ACC foe Maryland (7-5) on Friday (noon, ESPN) at Bank of America Stadium. Four of the five Wolfpack players available to the media – linebacker Isaiah Moore, defensive tackle Cory Durden, Speas and Gibson – are out of eligibility with LB Drake Thomas opting to declare for the NFL draft earlier this month.

What went right, wrong on defense for FSU vs. Oklahoma (tomahawknation.com; Scarpio)

Florida State football is back... in postseason play. The Seminoles just concluded their first bowl game since 2016. They were tasked with playing against the Oklahoma Sooners (6-6) in the Cheez-It Bowl. They had the slight “home field” advantage with the matchup taking place in Orlando, Florida, so the stands at Camping World Stadium were filled with garnet and gold.

The Seminoles were favorited in the matchup, fielding the most of their starters with an urgency to gain their 10th win of the season. After a hard fought match, Florida State got that win, earning their first bowl game win and 10-win season since 2016. Star defensive tackle Fabien Lovett did not play in the game for the Noles, but FSU found a way to secure the victory.

First half

Oklahoma won the toss and elected to differ, giving Florida State possession of the ball on the first drive. The Seminoles had a successful run down the field, but miscues in the red zone forced them into a field goal attempt. FSU’s defense headed into white lines up 3-0 with 11:26 left in the first quarter.

Florida State held the Sooners to a couple short plays at the start of the drive, but Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel found an open man on third down to open the field for the Sooners. OU spent most of their snaps running the ball through the middle, finally attempting to throw it downfield when Renardo Green made a tremendous pass breakup.

Once the Sooners made Florida State focus on their run game, they were able to find holes in the pass defense and pushed their way into FSU territory. OU was getting physical with the Noles, bulldozing their way into a short field with a 9-yard run for a first down.

Defensive end Patrick Payton and safety Jammie Robinson secured the first sack for the Seminoles just before Gabriel connected with a receiver in the end zone to put the Sooners up 7-3.

Oklahoma vs. Florida State Cheez-It Bowl Highlights (2022) (youtube; video; ACC DN)

Oklahoma vs. Florida State: The #13 Seminoles won their 10th game of the season by defeating Oklahoma, 35-33 in the Cheez-It Bowl. Jordan Travis connected with Johnny Wilson for a 58-yard reception to set up a Ryan Fitzgerald 32-yard field goal game-winning field goal with 55 seconds left in the game. The Florida State defense had six sacks and 11 tackles for loss in the game. Travis finished the game completing 27-38 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 50 yards rushing. Wilson caught eight passes for 202 yards. For Oklahoma, Gavin Sawchuk and Jovantae Barnes each rushed for 100+ yards and a touchdown.

A year and a few weeks ago, Duke sought a new and better vision for its floundering football program.

The decisions school leaders made then brought more success, and at a faster rate, than anyone imagined.

“I wish I could say that I took out a napkin and wrote nine wins on it back in August,” Duke president Vince Price told The News & Observer on the field after the Blue Devils beat UCF, 30-13, in the Military Bowl on Wednesday. “I don’t think anyone expected that turnaround to be as rapid as it’s been. We’re just thrilled and excited. The kind of leadership that our coaching staff brings to the program. You see this in the players. They’ve stepped up. They’ve matured over the course of the semester, over the course of the season. So I feel wonderful about the future.”

From the darkness of five wins in 23 games over the past two seasons, including 13 consecutive ACC losses, to the Military Bowl win that gave the Blue Devils (9-4) their most wins since 2014.

That’s where coach Mike Elko and his staff took Duke, with many of the same players, this season.

“I had no clue that when I came to Duke we’re gonna be where we are,” said safety Darius Joiner, a graduate transfer from Western Illinois who finished as the team’s leading tackler with 97. “I just trusted the vision Coach Elko had and just came in and worked hard every day.”

Beating UCF, a team from the American Athletic Conference that will join the Big 12 next season, is an example of how the Blue Devils overachieved to qualify for a bowl and then went a step further as the season progressed.

Over Duke’s first 11 games, it had not defeated a team that finished with a winning record. So the Blue Devils beat Wake Forest, 34-31, in their final regular-season game and toppled UCF with ease on Wednesday to further legitimize their accomplishments.
