Welcome to National Bird Day!
National Bird Day was created by Born Free USA (which was the Animal Protection Institute until 2007) and The Avian Welfare Coalition, to reduce the suffering of wild and captive birds. The day is meant to raise awareness of the destructive bird trade and cruel breeding mills, and to work for the improvement of conditions for birds already in captivity.
Millions of birds are captured in the wild each year, or are produced in captivity by breeders, who along with pet stores, sell them for profit. Many birds die in captivity before even being sold. Exotic birds have inherent behavioral and physical needs, which are often not met. They are still wild animals even though they are often treated as if they are not, and the confinement of birds to cages can lead to self-destructive behaviors. Buyers must not buy on impulse, and must be ready to keep a purchased bird for a lifetime. If buyers are not prepared to properly care for birds, birds may end up ignored in their cages, or left back into the wild to fend for themselves. They also may end up in overwhelmed bird sanctuaries.

Podcast: With Syracuse offensive lineman J'Onre Reed - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)
As the transfer portal becomes a normal part of life in college football, Syracuse has had both its successes and disappointments. This week, former Syracuse defensive back Ja’Had Carter announced he was transferring to Ohio State, fresh off a disappointing loss in the College Football Playoffs. Other Orange players in the portal include Duce Chestnut, Josh Hough, Courtney Jackson and Dom Foster.
But the Orange has also gotten back plenty of talented players in the portal, and three may be starters on the 2023 team. Of course, we already know about Chris Bleich, the Orange’s incumbent starting right guard who transferred from Florida. In December, the Orange also added left tackle Joe More from Richmond and Hutchinson CC interior lineman J’Onre Reed. Both should be strong candidates to replace outgoing linemen Matthew Bergeron and Dakota Davis.
We chatted with Reed on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast on a variety of topics, including why he committed to the Orange, his relationship with offensive line coach Mike Lynch, and where he gets his natural leadership skills from. Syracuse football: 2022 season recap and final thoughts (TNIAMM; Staff)
Syracuse Orange football finished the 2022 campaign 7-6 after falling in the Pinstripe Bowl 28-20. It was a year with mixed emotions, with thoughts of the strong 6-0 start seemingly fading away while injuries and superior opponents derailed the remainder of the season. Still, there was plenty of good to take away from this season, and that’s exactly what the TNIAAM staff is doing today:
Dom: I’ll go with the Clemson game. In hindsight, it was the clear turning point of the season, but it was also just an entertaining game to watch even if it ended in a loss for Syracuse. Honorable mention: still can’t get over Shrader's game-winning touchdown versus the Boilermakers.
Kevin: Garrett Williams’ interception against Louisville. It was the type of play Syracuse has given up in recent years and his ability to recognize what was happening and get back and make that play in the end zone gave the team and fanbase a little bit of faith to start the year off.
Steve: Ja’Had Carter’s scoop and score against Clemson. Even in the loss, that play had the energy and momentum swing that kept the Orange right there for the duration. It was a great play and almost helped the Orange to 7-0 on the year.
Christian: Garrett Shrader’s winning touchdown to Oronde Gadsden against Purdue. I don’t think fans started to truly believe Syracuse could go to a bowl game until that play happened. More importantly, that marked the moment that Gadsden became the alpha in Syracuse’s receiving unit that hadn’t been around since Trishton Jackson.

What Ohio State football is getting in Ja’Had Carter, transfer safety from Syracuse (cleveland.com; Baird)
Any questions Ryan Williams retained about new Ohio State football safety Ja’Had Carter’s ability to succeed at the next level ended on Aug. 30, 2019.
That day, Carter’s Jireh Prep Academy took on the Naval Academy’s junior varsity team. The Midshipmen were playing some juniors in that game. Running back Jamale Carothers ended the season as Navy’s starter.
That separation in age and development did not matter to Carter. Williams, Jireh’s coach at the time, saw the defensive back add a new description to his makeup: “Fearless.”
“Ja’Had was fearless tackling that kid,” Williams said, referring to Carothers. “That told me it didn’t really matter. He had the ability to compete at that level without flinching and breaking.”
Carter joins a Buckeye program seeking more stability in the back of its defense. He was a three-year starter at Syracuse — a freshman All-American in 2020 and an honorable mention All-ACC pick while leading the team in takeaways.
Williams, though, said Carter’s character may be his most impressive attribute. He said Carter comes from a particularly rough area in Richmond, Va. Williams, though, said Carter already had great drive and focus by the time he arrived at Jireh.

Freeney Named Hall of Fame Finalist - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)
Legendary pass rusher Dwight Freeney is one step closer to the hall of fame.
He was named as 1-of-15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday, in his first year on the ballot. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl Champion is now one step from becoming the ninth 'Cuse alumni to reach the hall of fame, which would move Syracuse into a tie for fifth for most selections.
The 15 finalists are: Jared Allen, Willie Anderson, Ronde Barber, Freeney, Devin Hester, Torry Holt, Andre Johnson, Albert Lewis, Darrelle Revis, Joe Thomas, Zach Thomas, DeMarcus Ware, Reggie Wayne, Patrick Willis and Darren Woodson.
Freeney, who is 18th in NFL history with 125.5 career sacks, spent 11 seasons (2002-12) with the Indianapolis Colts. He also played for the San Diego Chargers (2013-14), Arizona Cardinals (2015), Atlanta Falcons (2016), Seattle Seahawks (2017) and Detroit Lions (2017) during his career.
Freeney made an instant impact for the Colts after they selected him with the 11th overall pick in 2002. He recorded 13 sacks as rookie, the first of four straight seasons with at least 11 quarterback takedowns. In 2004, he led the NFL with 16 sacks. The next season, Freeney totaled 11 more sacks and six forced fumbles on his way to AFC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
In 2006, Freeney helped the franchise capture its second Super Bowl title, beating the Chicago Bears 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI. He appeared in two more Super Bowls during his career, one with the Colts after the 2009 season, and another with the Falcons.
At Syracuse, Freeney was just as dominant as he was in the pros. The Bloomfield, Connecticut native racked up 34 career sacks from 1998-2001 and set the Orange single-game record by sacking Virginia Tech's Michael Vick 4.5 times in 2000.
As a senior in 2001, Freeney turned in one of the finest campaigns by a defensive player in program history. He led the nation with a school-record 17.5 sacks. He also forced eight fumbles. For his efforts, Freeney was named a consensus All-American and the BIG EAST co-Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Lombardi, Nagurski and Bednarik Awards.

The page has turned to the start of a new year. But before we begin looking ahead to 2023, there’s still a bit of unfinished business to resolve.
The final college football game of the 2022 season will take place Saturday when reigning national champion Georgia will take on upstart TCU at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. It will mark the 3rd straight year in which the ACC has been shut out of the title game.
Which teams stand the best chance of ending that drought next season?
Here’s a look at the ACC’s most likely College Football Playoff contenders, including at least 1 that might surprise you:
All they’ll have to do is take care of business.
That’s easier to say than do. We learned that this season.
The good news is that 2 of their 3 toughest tests, Notre Dame and Florida State, will be at home. And other than the Irish and rival South Carolina, their other nonconference games will be against Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic.
There are plenty of questions to be answered, though. They start quarterback Cade Klubnik, who showed he still has a lot to learn during Clemson’s Orange Bowl loss to Tennessee. He’ll lead an offense whose receiving corps could use a major upgrade and will have to replace All-American guard Jordan McFadden and star tight end Davis Allen, along with reliable kicker BT Potter.

Syracuse spring maker is bouncing into new home on city’s North Side (PS; $; Moriarty)
A longtime Syracuse spring maker plans to move into the manufacturing building being vacated by Specialty Welding & Fabricating Inc.
Midstate Spring, which has been making custom springs and wire forms since its founding in Syracuse in 1939, said it plans to move into Specialty Welding’s building at 1025 Hiawatha Blvd. E. in the spring of 2023.
“We have been looking for a new home in Syracuse for almost five years and have found a great location in a historical manufacturing building,” Alex Melnikow, Midstate’s president, said in a statement.
Specialty Welding filed a notice with the state Department of Labor saying it will close in March and lay off its 62 employees. The company has been in business for almost 30 years, providing welding and metal fabricating services.
Midstate employs 100 people on New Court Avenue, making springs for the consumer, energy, firearms and fastener industries.
The company said the larger space in its new home will provide room for more equipment and additional employees to support its growth.
Midstate said it has added 40 employees since 2019. It lists its job openings and accepts online applications on its website at www.midstatespring.com/careers/.

Mike: Students rushing the field following the 24-9 win over #15 NC State. Between COVID keeping them away from sports for a year, followed by losing seasons from all three men’s Dome teams, being put on a national stage in front of a capacity crowd and earning a bowl berth was a special moment for this group of fans.Dom: I’ll go with the Clemson game. Mike: Oronde Gadsden burst onto the scene to fill the No. 1 Receiver role, with 61 catches for 969 yards and 6 TDs. Nobody expected such a breakout performance from the sophomore, but his chemistry with Garrett Shrader was a sight to behold - one that I hope carries into next season....
