Welcome to Boy Scouts Day!

Boys Scouts Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Scouting in America. In 1909, William Dickson Boyce, a Chicago publisher, was lost in thick fog in London when a boy came up to him and helped him find his way. The boy, who became known as the "Unknown Scout," refused a tip and told Boyce he was a Scout doing a good turn. It was this good deed that influenced Boyce to bring Scouts to the United States. He thought boys in the United States should have the same type of training that the boy who helped him had received. On February 8, 1910, Boyce filed incorporation papers in the District of Columbia for the creation of Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Syracuse football: Matthew Bergeron improves NFL draft stock at Senior Bowl (TNIAAM; Wall)

We knew that Syracuse Orange offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron would hear his name called in the 2023 NFL Draft.

After his week at the Senior Bowl, Bergeron might not be waiting long to find out his new NFL home. The former Orange left tackle got to showcase some versatility during the practices in Mobile as he also played inside at guard. The former zero star recruit got the attention of scouts and media last week so let’s round up some of what we saw online.

SBNation has a dedicated Senior Bowl page with practice observations and notes from NFL team sites. You’ll find some observations from the daily practices like this one:

The biggest overall winner from the offensive line on Thursday, Syracuse OT Matthew Bergeron had a tremendous practice after turning in two solid performances earlier in the week. Bergeron blocked everyone effectively and had a few “wow” moments as a run blocker in team sessions.

Longtime CNY football coach, who won four Section III titles, dies at age 91 (PS; $; Kramer)

The players, opponents and strategies all changed throughout the years, but the pregame speeches of New Hartford football coach Don Edick always contained at least one constant.

Before sending his Spartans onto the field, Edick would implore his Spartans to “go out there and kick some behind.”

Well, he didn’t use the word “behind,” instead opting for a more colorful anatomical term. That was the type of bluntness Edick liked to use to bring out the fire in his team.

“He used those words in particular in every speech, and it really got the kids riled up,” recalled John Vitullo, one of his former quarterbacks. “He made you want to run through a wall for him. To be able to pull that out of kids was a special talent he had.”

Fans who haven't been able to watch the Carolina Hurricanes or select ACC football or basketball games on Bally Sports now have another option for getting the regional sports network.

Fubo TV, a streaming service that bundles channels like a cable provider, is now carrying Bally Sports' regional channels. An agreement was reached several weeks ago, but the channels are now live.

Bally Sports South, which airs the vast majority of Carolina Hurricanes games, is available on Fubo's Pro package, its cheapest, for $75 a month.

Uneven revenue distribution model picking up steam in the ACC? (theclemsoninsider.com; Potter)

The ACC will hold winter meetings this week in Charlotte, and there’s one certain topic of conversation that administrators in attendance expect to be prevalent.

“We’ll have a lot of discussions on how to close the revenue gap in the ACC,” Clemson athletic director Graham Neff said last week.

More specifically, is the league on the verge of going to an unequal distribution of revenue? Neff said he’s spoken to league commissioner Jim Phillips as well as administrators at the other 13 ACC institutions, who have indicated to him that the idea might not be as far-fetched as it may seem.

“Now everybody has their hat or their polo on for different schools based on where you invest, what your priorities are and probably what your appetite is, but everybody is at the table and understands it’s time to order,” Neff said. “So I’ve been pleased and optimistic about the general understanding within the league that, hey, this is something we really need to look at, and that’s not easy.

“I emphasize that because I don’t take it lightly. Because forever, the ACC, let alone all other conferences that I’m aware of, has been equal revenue share. So the notion of kind of jumping the ditch or really considering rolling up the sleeves on, hey, we need to look at this differently, I think there’s a really good understanding of that.”

ESPN's ACC football teams ranked by returning production in 2023 (clemsonwire.usatoday.com; Turri)

We are still months away from the start of the 2023 college football season for Clemson and the rest of the programs around the country though it is never too early to look ahead.

A major piece of football that can give you an excellent idea of how good a team may be next season is to look at the teams returning production. While there will always be new talent rolling in and having an impact, especially at a powerhouse program like Clemson, returning talent and team experience still matter a ton.

Obviously, a ton of factors go into a team’s success in any given season. Injuries, the transfer portal, and a little luck can always factor in a season’s final results. So how does Clemson stack up with the rest of the ACC when it comes to 2023? Which teams have the most returning production?

ESPN analytics expert Bill Connelly has devised a formulaic equation that considers returning production across various position groups, including yards, snaps, tackles, and such. One ACC school, in particular, is returning the most production in the entire country.

Here’s how things stack up from least returning production to most experienced across all teams in the ACC.

Florida State Seminoles

Total Returning Production Numbers

Overall: No.1 (87%)
Offense | 80% (No. 12)
Defense | 94% (No. 2)

247Sports make a bold prediction about Cade Klubnik's 2023 season (clemsonwire.usatoday.com; Turri)

We are in the season of way-too-early predictions for the 2023 college football season, with 247Sports making a bold prediction about Clemson starting quarterback Cade Klubnik and the ACC conference that should excite Tigers’ fans.

Releasing their ten way-too-early bold predictions for the 2023 season, analyst Brad Crawford knows that there is a ton of hype surrounding Florida State, and for a good reason. The Seminoles return the most talent in the entire country heading into next season, with a quarterback in Jordan Travis, who some consider the best in the conference alongside North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

Though Florida State will be a great team next season behind Jordan Travis, Crawford predicts that Cade Klubnik will be the ACC’s top player, not the Seminoles’ quarterback. Here is what Crawford had to say.

CADE KLUBNIK, NOT JORDAN TRAVIS, IS ACC’S TOP PLAYER
Travis and Florida State have assumed the role of the ACC’s preseason media darlings, rightfully so given the talent returning for the Seminoles following a 10-win season. With that attention comes tremendous pressure to perform and Florida State will play two top-10 opponents out of the gate with LSU in Week 1 and a trip to Clemson in Week 4. That’s where Klubnik’s star as a sophomore will potentially shine the brightest in the ACC’s most important game of the 2023 season. Garrett Riley is going to develop Klubnik into a certifiable weapon at the position and if he can stay healthy, Clemson’s offense should take the next step under his watch.

Florida State leads all ACC programs in TV viewership in recent years - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Davis)

Florida State is the most-watched team in the ACC since 2014, according to newly-released data.

FSU shared that news on Tuesday morning. From 2014-21, Florida State football games drew in an average of 3.09 million viewers per game. That ranks No. 1 in the ACC over that span.

Here’s FSU’s announcement:

.@FSUFootball is tops in the ACC in average TV viewership across all tiers from 2014-2021 #OneTribe pic.twitter.com/h5PC2zMG3f
— FSU Seminoles (@Seminoles) February 7, 2023

Although 2014-21 was (mostly) a relative down period for Florida State football, the Noles have proven they’re still a big draw nationally.

On the field, Florida State seemed to turn things around in 2022. Mike Norvell led the team to a 10-3 record and the program’s 1st double-digit win campaign since 2016. This was also the first time Florida State has won a bowl game since 2019.

Looking ahead to next season, expectations are high for Florida State. The Noles have arguably the best incoming transfer portal class in the country as well as several high-profile returners like quarterback Jordan Travis and defensive lineman Jared Verse.

https://footballscoop.com/news/mars...e-coordinator-opening-with-an-acc-coordinator (footballscoop.com; Samuels)

Charles Huff had a significant opening on staff with the departure of defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, who coordinated one of the top defensive units in college football last season.

To fill it, a report this evening shares that Huff is turning to an ACC coordinator.

Matt Zenitz tweets that Jason Semore, who spent last season at Georgia Tech as their special teams coordinator, is reportedly set to be the new defensive coordinator for the Thundering Herd.

Semore was a finalist for our FootballScoop Linebackers Coach of the Year Award this past season.

2022 marked the first season back at Georgia Tech for Semore, who spent the 2021 season as the defensive coordinator at Valdosta State (D-II - GA), where he helped lead the Blazers to the Division II national title game.

ACC Knows It's Weak And Vulnerable, And Here's One Way To Help (audacy.com; podcast; The Fan)

The ACC asked its member institutions to schedule road out of conference games only against Power Five opponents. While Rob Brown says that's ultimately good for the conference - he says it also shows the ACC recognizes they're the most vulnerable conference based on reputation and wonders if the move is enough to save it?

Five sexiest plays in recent Pitt football history - The Pitt News (pittnews.com; Sykes)

The best part of Saturdays in the fall for many Pitt students is traveling to the North Shore to watch the Panthers play at Acrisure Stadium. The atmosphere is intense, the band is loud and the bright yellow towels wave everywhere.

But nothing gets the fans going more than a highlight play. Not just any highlight play, but one that makes the fans yell and think, “Ooh, that’s sexy.”

Here are five of the sexiest plays in recent Pitt football history, starting with the tight end that flew.

No. 5: Gavin Bartholomew’s hurdle vs. Tennessee

Athleticism from a big man will always make the fans go wild. This play comes from the 2022 season against SEC opponent Tennessee. Sophomore tight end Gavin Bartholomew got open on a wheel route up the right sideline, and senior quarterback Kedon Slovis found him in stride.

Fans, players and coaches all thought his catch would end in a 25-yard gain for a first down with the secondary swarming. But not Bartholomew, who completely cleared the Tennessee safety on his way to a 57-yard touchdown which gave the Panthers a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter.

The Panthers would lose a heartbreaker to Tennessee that evening, but Bartholomew’s display of athleticism sure did give the Pitt-faithful something to cheer about.

No. 4: Sirvocea Dennis’ pick-six vs. Clemson

The 2021 ACC championship season is obviously one of Pitt’s best football seasons in decades. It also gave fans one of the most exciting plays in recent college football history.

The play came vs. Clemson. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Tigers received the ball to start the third quarter and quickly crossed midfield. Sophomore quarterback DJ Uiagalelei took the snap on 2nd and eight and quickly threw a shovel pass to his running back. To his surprise, the pass ended up in the hands of junior linebacker Sirvocea Dennis, who broke through the defensive front untouched.

Dennis put a stiff arm on Uiagalelei and took the pass 53 yards in the opposite direction to electrify the Panther Pitt and give the Panthers a 21-7 lead that they wouldn’t surrender.

No. 3: The “Pitt Special” vs. UCF

The Panthers call western Pennsylvania their home. But in this play, they paid homage to their professional counterparts in the east.

Down six vs. No. 15 UCF, the Panthers were poised for a devastating loss, relinquishing a commanding early lead. Junior quarterback Kenny Pickett drove down to the Knight’s four-yard line. But the Panthers found themselves in a 4th and three situation with just 53 seconds left in the game. It was do or die for the Panthers.

BGB: National Title "Droughts" (RX; HM)

BGB: National Title "Droughts"

The word "drought" here is a bit misleading. Being on this list at all means that team at least has won a national championship (something most teams cannot say). That said, here's Big Game Boomer's list:

College Football: National Championship Droughts pic.twitter.com/qZwihEBgYR
— Big Game Boomer (@BigGameBoomer) February 7, 2023
The longest ACC "drought" belongs to Syracuse - 63 years since "The Express". After the Orange comes Pitt's 1976 Panthers; it's been 46 years since Tony Dorsett and company went undefeated.
Notre Dame slips in 34 years ago, during the Lou Holtz regime.
It's now been 32 years since Georgia Tech "split" the title with those 5th down imposters from Colorado.

CNY Brewfest 2023 trades Super Bowl Eve for March Madness (PS; Cazentre)

For almost 25 years, you could count on the annual CNY Brewfest taking its distinctive spot on the calendar: The day before the Super Bowl.

That changed in 2021 when the fest, one of the region’s biggest and most popular annual beer events, was canceled due to Covid. It happened again in 2022 when lingering Covid concerns pushed it into April.

This year, the event is also giving Super Bowl Eve a pass.

The 2023 CNY Brewfest will take place March 24 (VIP) and 25 (two regular sessions) in the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Whether it ever returns to its traditional Super Bowl weekend is a question organizer Jason Purdy can’t answer.

“We looked at the calendar, talked to the fairgrounds and tried to find the right fit,” Purdy said, adding that upcoming school break weeks are also a factor, since so many people head out of town. (He also tries to avoid conflicting with Syracuse basketball games).

This year’s main fest sessions (each requiring a separate ticket) feature more than 100 breweries, each pouring samples while attendees listen to live music. Food is available for separate purchase. The VIP session on Friday night is limited to 30 breweries, but offers a more intimate experience with brewers and special beers.

As he did last year, Purdy is limiting attendance at the main sessions to allow people to move around comfortably and avoid long lines.

The lineup includes breweries from Central New York, other Upstate regions and New York City.

Purdy, also owner of the Now & Later bar and bottle shop on Tipp Hill, said the local craft beer scene has been undergoing some changes in recent years, due to the pandemic and other market factors, but he’s confident there are still plenty of options and new beers to discover.

“I think it’s still dynamic,” he said. “There’s been some contraction (in breweries), but so many more retailers and distributors. The market may be more scattered than it was.”

CNY BREWFEST DETAILS

When:
The two main sessions are 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 25. More than 100 breweries will be on hand. Attendance is limited to 1,200 per session, with 300 tickets available for early entry. Tickets are $50 per session, plus $20 for the early entry.

The VIP Party is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday March 24. It features about 30 breweries offering special or hard-to-find beers. Attendance is limited to 300 people. Tickets are $50,

Ed Green of Northampton, Penn., caught this whale of a walleye recently while ice fishing on Lake Ontario's Chaumont Bay. The fish measured 31 ¼ inches long, with a 20-inch girth, and weighed 16.3 lb, only two pounds shy of the state record.

Angler uncorks enormous walleye from ice on Lake Ontario (PS; Featherstone)

Ed and Charlene Green have been keeping a close eye on the ice reports from Lake Ontario’s Chaumont Bay all winter. Two weeks ago they finally made the trip north from their home in Northampton, Penn.

“We acted on a hot tip that the fishing was getting good,” Ed said, “although at the time the ice was a bit skinny at 4-4.5.”

You know what isn’t skinny? The absolute unit Ed uncorked from an eight-inch hole in the ice of Chaumont Bay: a walleye measuring 31 ¼ inches long, with a 20-inch girth, and weighing 16.3 lb, only two pounds shy of the state record.

Ed was already having a pretty good day on the ice with his guide, Louis Pagnotti of Chaumont Masters, having reeled in a nice 21.5-inch walleye in 24 FOW using a Rapala jigging shadow rap.

“Around 4 p.m. that big girl came cruising through and decided to play ball,” Ed said. “I knew it was a big one but I didn’t really know how big until I got a glimpse under the clear ice. She put up a great fight for 10-15 minutes and finally we landed her.”

After getting some quick measurements, and a few snapshots, they released the walleye.

Here’s the release video of Ed Greenes SIXTEEN POUND WHALE of a walleye! Take notice of its girth in the very beginning of the clip!! This fish also took the top spot on Target Walleyes board this week and maybe the year!! If you don’t know about Target Walleye definitely check ‘em out. Posted by Chaumont Masters on Tuesday, January 31, 2023

In a Facebook post, Pagnotti said it’s the biggest walleye caught while ice fishing that he’s aware of. If there’s a world record for a husband/wife combo walleye catch, the Greens would take first place, Pagnotti wrote.

Last year, with Pagnotti’s guidance, Charlene Green pulled a monster 29.5-inch, 12-pound walleye through the ice on Chaumont Bay. She released it and had a replica made. Her trophy had a pretty good run as the biggest walleye on the wall of the Green’s home until Ed’s fish popped out of the ice.

‘Exclusionary’ zoning must go, report says. Housing costs in Onondaga County depend on it (PS; Knauss)

The lack of affordable housing in Onondaga County – a leading cause of poverty – is poised to get worse if local zoning rules don’t change before thousands of new residents come to the area in search of semiconductor jobs.

The reason? Zoning restrictions in most local municipalities discourage new housing that is not detached, single-family homes. That inhibits development of apartments and other more affordable housing, according to a report to be released Friday.

CNY Fair Housing, a nonprofit dedicated to housing issues, spent more than a year mapping the various zoning regulations enforced by 34 municipalities in the county. What they found, for the most part, was “exclusionary zoning’' that blocks housing options other than single-family homes, reinforcing poverty and racial segregation.

Developers who want to build duplexes, row houses, mobile homes or apartment buildings often must beg for special permission from local officials. That drags out the process, increases the cost and comes with the all-too-frequent likelihood of getting shouted down by the owners of neighboring properties.

Even without the population growth expected from Micron Technology’s planned chip fab in Clay, this is a problem, said Sally Santangelo, executive director of CNY Fair Housing. Already, one-quarter of tenants in the county spend more than half their income on rent.
