Taking place on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent, Fat Thursday is a Christian feast that is primarily celebrated in European countries. It is similar to Fat Tuesday, which is celebrated the following week, but in many European countries, it is the more important holiday of the two. It also is associated with Carnival. As much fasting is done during Lent, Fat Thursday is a day for getting together and eating sweets and other foods that are eschewed during that season. Commonly eaten foods include pączki, berliners, and angel wings.

Syracuse adds 2023 preferred walk-on Max Perricone to wide receiver room (PS; $; Leiker)
Syracuse football earned a commitment from preferred walk-on Max Perricone on Tuesday.
The wide receiver is from Ontario, Canada. He is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. Originally in the class of 2022, he reclassified to play a post-grad year at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut. He played at St. Andrew’s College in high school.
Perricone received his offer from SU on Feb. 12. He also had an offer from Sacred Heart.
Honored to announce my commitment to Syracuse University!! Thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this point. @730scouting @coach_lio @Coach_Mehleisen @CuseFootball pic.twitter.com/zGtzpCMqmc
— Max Perricone (@MaxPerricone) February 14, 2023
Perricone is the third wide receiver Syracuse has picked up in the 2023 cycle. The Orange signed three-star Kansas WR Bryce Cohoon in the early signing period and then Darrell Gill from Texas on National Signing Day.
Wide receivers coach Michael Johnson is one of the few assistant coaches on Dino Babers’ staff to remain the same from the 2022 season.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Orange miss from the ACC slate?
Not having to play NC State isn’t bad, and missing Miami and Duke – yeah, Duke – this year is a positive. However, not getting to play Virginia hurts, and Louisville is one of those 50/50 games the Orange might have liked to have.
One of the biggest positives, though, is there’s no Notre Dame. This year that’s going to be a problem for a whole slew of ACC teams, but …
Syracuse Football Schedule What Really Matters
Syracuse has to play both Clemson and Florida State, and the date with the Seminoles is in Tallahassee. That comes early, and the trip to FSU comes after playing North Carolina as part of a run of three straight ACC road games. It’s broken up by a week off, but it’s still a bit of a problem.Yes, the Pitt game is in the state of New York, but Yankee Stadium isn’t exactly a home game. That means there’s only one true home game – Boston College – in a five date stretch.
Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?
It’s going to be tough after the first few games.Syracuse was able to get bowling last season with a thrilling win over Purdue and a few other good performances, but the schedule got tougher, the team got banged up, and there was a problem late.
This year, Colgate, Western Michigan, and Army need to be wins. The home game against Boston College is a must, and after that it’s going to be a fight to come up with an extra two or three victories.

BackgroundSean Tucker was born in Owings Mills, Maryland, and starred as a multi-sport athlete as a high schooler at Calvert Hall. Tucker played both sides of the football, serving as the top running back and top cornerback on his squad.
He also won several state championships as a member of the track team. Tucker showcased his blazing speed in the 55-, 100-, and 200-meter events, causing college programs around the country to take notice.
Tucker took little time to decide his future, committing to the Syracuse Orange to continue his career on the gridiron. As a true freshman in 2020, the three-star recruit made his mark early thanks to injuries and opt-outs on the depth chart.

Syracuse football: Orange rank 59th in early SP+ projections (TNIAAM; Wall)
It’s still a few weeks before the Syracuse Orange football team starts spring practice, but we continue to look out for early projections.
Yesterday ESPN’s Bill Connelly released his preseason SP+ rankings. Syracuse ranks 59th in the early SP+ with the offense 66th and the defense 48th. These rankings are based on returning production, recent recruiting and recent history.
As a refresher, here’s how Connelly explains SP+
It’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the year.
The numbers will be adjusted in May after spring practices and the next transfer window. In last year’s May numbers, Syracuse was 57th, and it feels like this is an area where the Orange will find themselves regularly.
Here’s where Syracuse’s 2023 opponents are ranked:
Florida State- 11
Clemson- 12
North Carolina- 28
Pittsburgh- 40
Purdue- 49
Wake Forest- 52
Virginia Tech- 69
Georgia Tech- 70
Boston College- 72
Army- 87
Western Michigan- 125

Applebaum Returns to Lead Offensive Line - Boston College Athletics (bceagles.com)
Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley announced the hiring of Matt Applebaum as offensive line coach on Tuesday. Applebaum, who served as the Eagles' offensive line coach in Hafley's first two seasons from 2020-21, returns for his second stint on the Heights.
"We are thrilled to have Matt, his wife Bethany and their son Colton back in Boston," stated Hafley. "Our players are excited to have Coach Applebaum back and get to work."
Applebaum spent the 2022 season in the NFL as the Miami Dolphins' offensive line coach; helping Miami to its first playoff appearance in six years. The Dolphins allowed five fewer sacks than the previous season and improved their rushing average from 3.5 yards to carry to 4.3; an improvement of nine spots in the league rankings.
During his initial stint at BC, Applebaum coached nine All-ACC selections and a pair of All-Americans in Zion Johnson, who was selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and Alec Lindstrom. The entire starting offensive line earned All-ACC in 2021, led by Johnson and Lindstrom on the first team.
"Coach Applebaum knows what it takes to forge a top-tier offensive line and develop talent for professional football," said Johnson, who started all 18 games, including the playoffs, for the Los Angeles Chargers this past season. "I'll always be grateful for his mentorship in helping me reach my goal of being a first round pick and playing in the National Football League."
Applebaum reunites with two-year starter Christian Mahogany, who was voted All-ACC Second Team in 2021 and returns to the field after missing all of 2022 following ACL surgery.
"I can't wait to get back to work with Coach Applebaum," said Mahogany. "Our whole unit was an All-ACC offensive line two seasons ago and I know we can achieve that and more under his leadership."

...Clemson outside of top 10 in ESPN's preseason SP+ rankings (on3.com; Connolly)
The national perception seems to be that Florida State is the team to beat in the ACC for the 2023 season as many early polls have the Seminoles ranked higher than Clemson.
The latest rankings that have FSU above Clemson are ESPN’s SP+ rankings.
ESPN’s Billy Connelly released his first SP+ rankings for 2023 on Tuesday, and Florida State is the highest ranked ACC team at No. 11. Clemson is not far behind at No. 12.
Connelly’s SP+ rankings take into account returning production, recent recruiting and recent history.
Clemson finished the 2022 season at No. 14 in the SP+ rankings, which was still the highest-ranked ACC team. Florida State was the next highest ACC team at No. 27.

Ranking the new-look SEC’s 16 football teams for 2024: College Football Survivor Show (PS; podcast; Lesmerises)
On this episode of The College Football Survivor Show (which now has two free episodes per week), Doug Lesmerises and Shehan Jeyarajah are ranking the new SEC, which officially will add Oklahoma and Texas for the 2024 season.
When that season arrives, which football programs will be the strongest in the SEC and which will be the weakest? How many of the programs will be playoff contenders at their peaks? How many will be national title contenders?
While there is a clear top two and a clear No. 16, the other 13 teams make for a difficult ranking. How do the Sooners and Longhorns fit in with programs like Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, and Ole Miss?
Doug and Shehan make their choices one through 16. Thanks for listening.

Central NY crushes high temperature record (PS; Coin)
Central New York smashed today’s high temperature record by several degrees, and it could get even warmer this afternoon.
As of 2 p.m., Syracuse had reached 69 degrees, beating Feb. 15 record of 64, set in 1954.
Today’s high is typical of mid-May. The normal high for Feb. 15 is 33 degrees.
The high temperature today also ties for third-warmest February day ever recorded in Syracuse. The only times it was warmer in February was on Feb. 21, 2018, at 75 degrees; and on Feb. 24, 2017, at 71 degrees.
High winds could develop this afternoon too, with wind gusts up to 40 mph, the National Weather Service said.
Enjoy the spring-like warmth while it lasts: A cold front moves in tonight, bringing rain and a high of 54 Thursday and just 40 degrees on Friday. Lows fall into the teens by Saturday morning, and we could see a little bit of wet snow Friday night.
Warmer weather comes in for the Presidents Day weekend, with highs in the 40s all three days.
