Film Review: Dominant ground game lifted SU over UNLV (DO; Girshon)

Syracuse loves to throw the football. Its 47.8 pass attempts per game pace all Football Bowl Subdivision teams and quarterback Kyle McCord’s 362.8 passing yards per game is the second-most in the country.

The Orange stuck with their game plan against UNLV. McCord finished with a career-high 63 attempts while throwing for 355 yards and three touchdowns.

But even with how much SU threw the ball, it ran for a season-high 137 yards and three touchdowns. Running backs LeQuint Allen Jr. and Yasin Willis combined for 191 total yards — 133 off rushes — and five touchdowns.

Here’s a breakdown of how Allen Jr. and Willis lifted Syracuse to a 44-41 upset win over then-No. 25 UNLV:

4th quarter, 1:11 — Allen Jr. extends the game

After McCord threw a red zone interception midway through the fourth quarter with the game tied 31-31, UNLV scored a go-ahead touchdown with just under three minutes remaining. The Orange continued leaning on McCord, who led them just outside the red zone with 1:11 remaining after completing a nine-yard pass to Oronde Gadsden II.

However, it brought up fourth-and-1. Before the play, Syracuse used the first of its three timeouts, meaning it wouldn’t get the ball back if it couldn’t convert on fourth down. SU used a jumbo set with the game on the line, having tight ends Gadsden, Dan Villari and Max Mang positioned at the line of scrimmage.

The Orange originally had Allen Jr. and Willis in the backfield, with Allen Jr. lined up as a fullback and Willis as the halfback. Though Allen Jr. soon motioned out to McCord’s right and lined up about a yard behind right tackle Savion Washington. With 18 seconds on the play clock, McCord motioned to Allen Jr. and he darted toward the left sideline. A second later, he received the ball on a jet sweep.

As Allen Jr. sprinted toward the left sideline, left tackle Da’Metrius Weatherspoon sealed off UNLV linebacker Mani Powell. Mang lined up directly on Weatherspoon’s left, while Villari was the closest blocker to the sideline. As Weatherspoon successfully fended off Powell, the tight ends each blocked cornerback Johnathan Baldwin. This allowed Jalen Catalon, who was originally lined up in the middle of the field at the 17-yard line, to get a free run at Allen Jr.

Mang tried chipping his block and beating Catalon to the edge, but the defender took a perfect angle and met Allen Jr. behind the line of scrimmage. While Allen Jr. tried turning the corner, Catalon delivered a low hit to his knees forcing him to stumble backward. Though the hit wasn’t enough to make the running back fall, as he stayed on his feet and gained 11 yards along the sideline to extend the game.

3rd quarter, 10:45 — Willis breaks off SU’s longest run

After scoring two touchdowns in the first half, Syracuse gave Allen Jr. two quick touches to begin the second half. His first was a three-yard run and the second was a swing pass for no gain. However, he took a shot to his knee after making the reception, visibly looking in pain after taking the hit.

So, the Orange, who were missing backup running back Will Nixon, turned to Willis in the backfield. While SU marched down to UNLV’s 38-yard line, the true freshman picked up 12 yards on his first three carries of the game. His fourth carry was then SU’s longest of the day.

Following a five-yard gain on a run up the middle on first-and-10, Syracuse put the ball in Willis’ hands for the second play in a row. With McCord lined up in the shotgun, Willis stood to the quarterback’s right as Trebor Peña and Jackson Meeks were split out to the right and Darrell Gill Jr. was the lone receiver on the left. Gadsden was lined up outside of Weatherspoon on the line of scrimmage.

On what appeared to be a run-pass-option, McCord handed the ball off to Willis and he immediately ran to the left. Weatherspoon dominated his rep versus Antonio Doyle Jr., left guard Jakob Bradford sandwiched Jackson Woodard and Gadsden — who broke toward the center of the field — picked up Jalen Dixon on the right side, giving Willis a massive hole.

Willis only had to contend one-on-one with Catalon, who took a poor angle in the open field. As Willis crossed the first down marker at the 28-yard line, he burst down the left sidelines before getting pushed out of bounds at the seven by Catalon. Three plays later, Allen Jr. scored his second receiving touchdown, giving Syracuse a 24-21 lead.

3rd quarter, 8:42 — Willis’ first touchdown

Two plays after Allen Jr.’s touchdown, the Orange got the ball back on UNLV’s 21-yard line after a Duce Chestnut interception. Similar to Willis’ 26-yard pickup, McCord was in shotgun and the true freshman stood to his right. SU again had three receivers out wide. Additionally, Gadsden was lined up next to Washington at the line of scrimmage instead of Weatherspoon.

On an RPO, McCord again handed off to Willis, who ran left. Because Doyle initially dropped into coverage, Weatherspoon and Bradford pancaked Alexander Whitmore. The right and center parts of the line all shifted left, but they got significantly less push than Weatherspoon and Bradford on the far left.

Willis initially ran behind right guard Mark Petry, but he stayed patient and bounced out to the left with the hole that was created. With the edge sealed, Willis broke toward the sideline. Doyle tried making a play on the running back, but Weatherspoon got just enough of a block on the defensive end to prevent him from getting a grasp on Willis.

After Willis broke free from Doyle two yards beyond the line of scrimmage, Catalon was the last UNLV defender who could make a play. Instead, he missed his tackle and Willis tiptoed down the sideline for his first-career touchdown.

Kyle McCord changes everything: ‘We’ll always have a chance’ (ACC stat leaders) (PS; Mink)

Kyle McCord’s assault on the Syracuse record book is underway.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

As Syracuse (4-1, 1-1 ACC) hits the halfway point of its first season under Fran Brown on Saturday night at North Carolina State (3-3, 0-2), McCord has reimagined what’s possible for a perennial downtrodden program if it hits on a franchise quarterback.

McCord ranks second nationally in passing, averaging 362.8 yards per game, behind only Miami (Fla.)’s Cam Ward.

McCord orchestrated a game-tying touchdown drive late in last week’s 44-41 overtime victory at UNLV, capping the clutch series with a perfectly placed back-shoulder ball to Jackson Meeks with 23 seconds remaining.

Through five games, the Orange has scored a touchdown in the final minute of a half five times. McCord also led a touchdown drive on its final possession with 3:13 remaining in a 26-24 loss to Stanford on Sept. 20.

“We’ll always have a chance because of Kyle,” Brown said this week.

In a quarterback-driven sport, McCord has become an indispensable widget in an everybody-eats offense.

McCord Makes Golden Arm Award Top-25 - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

Star quarterback Kyle McCord has made the cut to the top-25 for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Presented annually, the Golden Arm Award recognizes the top senior quarterback in the country. McCord was already named a Manning Award Star of the Week and to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 on Monday for his performance against No. 25 UNLV in the Orange's road win over the Rebels.

The transfer QB is near the top of every quarterback statistical category nationally and rapidly climbing the Orange record books through his five-game 'Cuse tenure. He leads the nation in completions per game (30.8), and his 17 touchdown passes rank second nationally to Cam Ward, who has played one more game. He also ranks fourth in passing yards (1,814) and second in yards per game (326.8). He's also fourth nationally in points responsible for (21.6 points per game) and fifth in total offense (364.0 yards per game).

McCord's 17 touchdown passes are already the 10th-highest single-season total in school history and ranks 15th for a career. He's the first player in school history to throw for 300+ yards in five-straight games. Only Ryan Nassib (6 – 2012) and Eric Dungey (6 – 2016) have more 300-yard passing games in a single season.
Skip Ad

McCord is just three completions and 320 yards shy of breaking into the top-15 in each category for a single-season by the midway point of the year.

He and the Orange return to action on Saturday for their second-straight road game at NC State. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ACCN.

NC State football at midseason: CJ Bailey, feast-or-famine defense and Dave Doeren's future (fayobserver.com; Baxley)

It’s time to adjust expectations as N.C. State football hits the midpoint of the 2024 season.

After entering the season as a projected challenger for the ACC championship and a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, the Wolfpack (3-3, 0-2 ACC) will be battling for a bowl bid in the final six weeks of the regular season.

In its three games against major conference opponents, N.C. State gave up 51 points to Tennessee in Charlotte, saw Clemson drop 59 in Death Valley and blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against Wake Forest in Raleigh.

“With our fans, I know all of us wanted better than 3-3. Trust me, no one's more disappointed than me and our players. But I also know N.C. State's about fighting and not giving up. That's where we're at. We've been in worse situations — and rallied — and had really good finishes. That's what we're going to try to do,” head coach Dave Doeren said.

“We got six games, six opportunities. We'll take them all one at a time. We'll work our butts off. A lot to play for and a lot to fight for. I know it's frustrating. I feel your pain. But I know one thing about this school, we don't quit. We dig in and fight and we stick together.”

Here are three observations about the Wolfpack halfway through the season.

CJ Bailey is growing as NC State football quarterback

Grayson McCall’s sobering injury situation is the cloud that hangs over N.C. State’s offense, but true freshman CJ Bailey has proven he can be the Wolfpack’s quarterback of the future. There have been growing pains, including three interceptions, but Bailey has accounted for four touchdowns in the last three games. The 6-foot-6 quarterback, who completed 66.7% of his passes for 272 yards against Wake Forest, looks the part.

Feast-or-famine defense for Wolfpack without Payton Wilson

For the third time in 12 seasons under Doeren, N.C. State has allowed two opponents to reach 50 points in the same year. Sixth-year defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has consistently fielded a top-25 defense as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, but things are different this season.

This season, the Pack is feeling the absence of linebacker Payton Wilson, the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year, with a feast-or-famine unit that has failed to string together success. N.C. State is 11th nationally in takeaways, but 119th in scoring defense, allowing an average of 33.6 points per game. If the Pack doesn’t start showing more resistance on that side of the ball, it’s hard to see things turning around this season.

Are NC State fans tired of Dave Doeren?

N.C. State fans are known for their loyalty and, arguably, the best tailgating scene in the ACC. Win or lose, those fans typically pack Carter-Finley Stadium — in the first half, at least — on a weekly basis. Many of those fans seem ready to move on from Doeren, but could N.C. State find someone better?

It doesn’t seem likely. Doeren is the first coach in program history to lead N.C. State to eight or more wins in four straight seasons. There should probably be a shakeup on his staff, but Doeren has proven he can keep the Wolfpack near the top of the ACC.

NC State Football Going 'Pack in Black' Versus Syracuse (SI; Giles)

Once again, Dave Doeren's 12th NC State football team needs to get back on track. The Wolfpack, who began the season with high hopes while ranking No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25, fell to 3-3 and 0-2 in ACC play via a 34-30 home loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday afternoon.

So, this week, NC State is mixing things up a bit — at least on the uniform front — as the team will wear black helmets, black jerseys, and black pants for the showdown against the visiting Syracuse Orange (4-1, 1-1 ACC) under the lights in Carter-Finley Stadium at 8 p.m. ET Saturday (ACC Network).

According to the NC State Uniform Tracker social media account, the Wolfpack-Orange bout will mark the 10th time that the "Pack in Black" combo has made an appearance in the Doeren era. State is 6-3 in such contests, and the only years it wasn't used came in 2013 and 2016.

NC State football, playing its third straight home game, holds a 13-3 advantage over Syracuse in their all-time series. That includes the Wolfpack's 7-1 record against the Orange in Raleigh.

A 2014 victory over Syracuse marked Doeren's first conference win as the NC State football head coach after the Wolfpack finished 0-8 against ACC foes in his first year at the helm.

Fran Brown discusses OT win, NC State ahead of 1st ACC road bout (DO; Stepansky)

For the first time under first-year head coach Fran Brown, Syracuse went on the road. The Orange traveled across the country to Las Vegas and took down then-No. 25 UNLV in an overtime thriller.

The back-and-forth affair came down to the wire, with quarterback Kyle McCord attempting 63 passes and running back LeQuint Allen Jr. breaking through for the game-winning score. The win was the second against a ranked opponent under Brown and SU’s first road victory versus a ranked opponent since 2010.

Up next for Syracuse is a road trip to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on NC State. The Wolfpack are 3-3 to start the season in their 12th year under head coach Dave Doeren.

“I know that it was a great overtime win and all those things of that nature, and it means a lot to our community and just overall,” Brown said. “But at the end of the day, we got to get ready for NC State, because they’re a really good football team who almost won the conference last year.”

Here are some takeaways from Brown’s weekly press conference before his first Atlantic Coast Conference road game as SU’s head coach:

Vegas jackpot

Syracuse’s victory over UNLV was filled with key decisions by Brown down the stretch. None was bigger than the one following Jackson Meeks’ touchdown with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The score cut SU’s deficit to one, forcing Brown to decide whether to kick the game-tying extra point or go for a two-point conversion and the win.

While Brown said he knew much of the staff and fanbase wanted to go for two, he went with his gut and chose the first option.

“I just wanted to put it on the players and give them the opportunity to show how hard they work, and what they’ve done all summer,” Brown said.

SU kicked the extra point, sent the game to overtime and won it there.

Against the Rebels, the Orange also showcased a flurry of special teams mistakes. Versus Holy Cross the week prior, Syracuse missed three field goals. Issues carried over on a bigger scale in its bout with UNLV.

College Football Havoc Rankings, Pick: Syracuse vs. NC State Highlights Top Havoc Bet for Week 7 (actoinnetwork.com; Wilson)

Ole Miss decided to get back into the win column with a heavy dose of Havoc against South Carolina last week.

Bouncing back from a loss to Kentucky, the Rebels answered the Gamecocks' ground attack with plenty of pressure. South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers and running back Raheim Sanders were limited to less than 100 rushing yards, while the Ole Miss defense executed 10 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Sellers has now seen 47 pressures on the season, with 20 of them coming from Ole Miss in Week 6.

Our Havoc Rankings take a weekly look at defenses that have a high percentage chance of creating chaos. Ole Miss is the best tackles-for-loss defense in the nation, a bullet point in any handicap against an opposing offense line.

The Rebels have a stranglehold on the top spot in Defensive Havoc, thanks to an additional 34 passes defensed.

Meanwhile, the safest offense to trust continues to be Navy, which allows Havoc on just 3.9% of offensive snaps.

There are a number of variables that build our Havoc Rankings. Tackles for loss, interceptions, pass breakups and fumbles are a few of the data points used against the total number of plays on the offensive and defensive side.

The best offenses in FBS rarely allow a quarterback to be pressured, while defenses can turn the field position around on any given snap.

How many Syracuse football Top 10 lists will Kyle McCord crack this season? He’s already made 3 (PS; $; Leiker)

Kyle McCord has met, if not exceeded, the hype that started when he announced his commitment to Syracuse football nearly 10 months ago.

In his first five performances of what will be a limited run with the Orange, the Ohio State transfer quarterback has put up some of the best numbers SU has seen in a decade.

He has thrown for 300-plus yards in all five of Syracuse’s game this season, the most consecutive games an SU quarterback has ever done so.

On Friday night in the Orange’s win at UNLV, McCord completed 40-of-63 (63.4%) passes for 355 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

The performance earned him a nod as a Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 for the week.

McCord’s 63 attempts are the second-most for a single game behind Ryan Nassib’s 66-attempt game against Northwestern in 2012. McCord’s 50-attempt game against Holy Cross comes in at No. 8.

Friday’s game also landed him on Syracuse’s top-10 list for single-game completions. His 40 completions are third-most in program history.

How many places will McCord’s name rest in the Orange’s record book?

Currently, he is 154-of-240 (64.2%) for 1,814 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions.

If McCord continues at the pace he’s set through five games through the 12-game regular season, here’s which stats he would land at No. 1 for Syracuse:

  • Single-season pass attempts: 576
  • Single-season completions: 369
  • Single-season passing yards: 4,353
  • Single-season touchdowns: 40
Keep scrolling to see where McCord currently sits inside or just on the edge of Syracuse’s Top 10 record lists in 10 major quarterback statistical categories. We’ll keep track of his climb through the rankings through the rest of the season.

Syracuse football recruiting: getting to know 2025 commit Byron Washington (TNIAAM; Wall)

As the Syracuse Orange prepare to travel to face NC State this weekend, one of the future Orange was featured in the “No Days Off” series produced by Whistle.

The three-star, top 100 offensive line recruit from DeSoto Texas committed to Syracuse back in March. It was a move that surprised many as he had offers from Texas and Oregon among others.

Watching this video, you can see why Washington might have been impressed by the team culture instituted in Syracuse by Fran Brown. Washington’s determination is obvious as the high school senior overcame major surgery after growing six inches in a single month while he was in the sixth grade.

In the profile below, he talks about the importance of faith and family and you can see how Syracuse landed a commitment from a Texas powerhouse. Hopefully we see Byron and his “uncle” Shaq in the JMA Dome in 2025, we think Byron’s the type of player that Orange fans will be happy to see clearing the way for Yasin Willis and others in the future.

4-star cornerback, who had officially visited Syracuse football, reopens recruitment (itlh; Adler)

Dawayne Galloway Jr., an elite 2025 four-star cornerback/athlete from Ohio who officially visited Syracuse football in June, has reopened his recruitment.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Galloway gave a verbal commitment to Big Ten Conference school Purdue in early July, but then in recent days, he said via his X page that he was de-committing from the Boilermakers and would reopen his recruiting process.

The new Orange staff, led by first-year head coach and ace recruiter Fran Brown, offered a scholarship to Galloway on December 20 of last year.

Galloway, a football and track star, had been competing for Marion-Franklin High School in Columbus, Ohio. According to recruiting services, it appears he is now suiting up for another Columbus program, Walnut Ridge High School.

Why Syracuse Can't Afford to Lose Against NC State (orangefizz.net; Daley)

After a gutsy 44-41 win over UNLV last weekend, who was ranked No. 25 at the time, Syracuse is well on its way to earning a spot in the AP poll, but it has to keep the momentum going.

The Rebels were the second ranked opponent the Orange have beaten this season after it beat Georgia Tech 31-28 in Week 2, who was ranked No. 23. It’s the first time Syracuse has beaten two ranked teams in a single season since 2001 when it came in at No. 14 on the final AP poll.

The Orange were one of the first teams below the top-25 rankings after the win over Georgia Tech, but a loss to Stanford the following week dashed any hopes of breaking into them. With its win against UNLV giving Syracuse a second chance, the Orange will turn its attention to an away game against NC State.

Syracuse has historically struggled against its ACC rival. The Orange have a 3-13 all-time record against the Wolfpack and a 1-7 record when playing NC State on the road, both of which are cause for concern, but the Orange are the better team this year. There’s no excuse for Syracuse not to win, and its poor history against the Wolfpack should only add extra motivation.

NC State, which is 3-3 and currently tied with North Carolina at the bottom of the ACC, has struggled to defend the pass all season. Its secondary has allowed 387.7 total yards per game, with 216.7 coming through the air.

Scouting Syracuse

Jacey Zembal • TheWolfpackCentral
Writer

Former Western Carolina standout Fran Brown worked his way up and coached under Matt Rhule at Temple and Baylor, Greg Schiano at Rutgers
and Kirby Smart at Georgia.

Brown was hired at Syracuse to replace Dino Babers and has hit the ground running. With help from the transfer portal, the Orange are off to a 4-1 start and have become one of the surprise stories in the ACC.

Syracuse travels to play NC State (3-3) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium on the ACC Network.

Five Syracuse players to watch

Junior running back LeQuint Allen
The 6-foot, 201-pound Allen was one of the breakout players in the ACC last year. He rushed 245 times for 1,064 yards and nine touchdowns, and added 38 catches for 210 yards and a score in 2023. He has followed up with 73 carries for 358 yards and three scores, and has 29 catches for 226 yards and three touchdowns through five games. He had a season-high 98 yards on 15 carries in the 38-22 win over Ohio on Aug. 31. Allen had over 100 yards in seven games last year.
Senior defensive end Fadil Diggs
The 6-5, 261-pound Diggs played his first four years at Texas A&M, and he collected eight sacks. Diggs made the move to Syracuse and already has four sacks, 27 tackles and eight tackles for loss in five games this season. He had two sacks apiece against both Ohio and UNLV. He was ranked No. 205 overall in the class of 2020 coming out of Camden (N.J.) Woodrow Wilson by .
Junior tight end Oronde Gadsden II
The lanky 6-5, 236-pound Gadsden, whose dad played in the NFL, is essentially a wide receiver playing tight end. Gadsden exploded in 2022 for 61 catches for 969 yards and six touchdowns, when current NC State offensive coordinator Robert Anae was at Syracuse. He had eight catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-9 win over NC State on Oct. 15, 2022. Gadsden got injured last year, but has bounced back for 26 catches for 395 yards and three scores this season. He wore out UNLV for 10 catches for 142 yards in the 44-41 overtime win last Friday.
Senior cornerback Clarence Lewis
Syracuse has young and old with freshman cornerback Marcellus Barnes II and senior Lewis, who played his first four years at Notre Dame. The 6-0, 201-pounder has 12 tackles, five passes defended and one interception this season. Lewis has 136 career tackles, 23 passes defended, three forced fumbles and four interceptions.
Senior quarterback Kyle McCord
McCord was the starting quarterback for Ohio State in 2023, with his lone loss 30-24 at Michigan. The 6-3, 220-pound McCord entered the transfer portal and landed at Syracuse, where he has thrived. McCord has gone 154-of-240 passing for 1,814 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He isn’t a threat to scramble much, but has thrown for at least 339 yards in all five games this season. McCord threw for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions in 12 games at Ohio State in 2023.

What to watch for from Syracuse

1. High-powered offense.
The Orange are averaging 35.8 points per game this season, with a season-high 44 points last week in the overtime win at UNLV.
The lone team to slow down Syracuse has been Stanford, which topped the Orange 26-24 on Sept. 20 in Upstate New York. The Cardinal picked him off twice and got four sacks.
McCord has been airing the ball out, and went 40-of-63 passing for 355 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, with four carries for 22 yards last Friday against UNLV. He’s completed at least 27 passes in all five games. McCord has been sacked nine times this season.
Syracuse has five threats in the passing game, plus running back Allen, who bring different skillsets. Junior slot receiver Trebor Pena has emerged with 34 receptions for 383 yards and five touchdowns, and Georgia transfer Jackson Meeks has been a welcomed addition, and has 27 catches for 343 yards and three scores.
Junior Umari Hatcher is a deep threat with 12 receptions for 218 yards and two scores, and sophomore Darrell Gill Jr. has chipped in 11 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Allen and tight end Oronde Gadsden II are major threats in the passing game, with Gadsden a likely future NFL player.
2. The defense is suspect. Good teams have proven they can score against Syracuse.
The Orange are allowing 26.2 points, 136 rushing yards per game and 209.2 passing yards a contest this season. Syracuse has 11 sacks and five interceptions, but have only forced one fumble, which they didn’t recover.
UNLV hung 41 points on the board with Campbell quarterback transfer Hajj-Malik Williams throwing for 227 yards and three scores, and he rushed 12 times for 53 ayrds and a touchdown.
Georgia Tech scored four touchdowns — three on the ground — and quarterback Haynes King threw for 266 yards and one touchdown, and rushed for 67 yards and two scores, but the Yellow Jackets lost 31-28.
Stanford topped Syracuse 26-24 and did it on the ground. The Cardinal rushed 32 times for 173 yards, while throwing for 178 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Stanford had a pick-six in the win.
3. Offensive line has emerged. Syracuse has allowed 11 sacks in 244 passing attempts this season.
Four of the sacks happened in the lost against Stanford, with speed rusher David Bailey getting two of them.
Redshirt juniors Da’Metrius Weatherspoon and Savion Washington are both massive bookends. Weatherspoon, a Howard transfer, is at left tackle at 6-7 and 330 pounds. Washington is 6-8 and 340 pounds at right tackle, and is a Kent State and Colorado transfer.
Senior center J’Onre Reed is 6-3 and 316 pounds, and has two seniors around him with left guard Jakob Bradford, who is 6-5 and 304, and right guard Mark Petry, who checks in at 6-4 and 301 pounds. The group at their various schools have a combined 91 career starts.

Syracuse football at N.C. State how to watch, betting odds and prediction in week 7 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football continues its month-long road trip when the Orange heads to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school N.C. State this Saturday evening.

The Orange, last Friday night, notched a thrilling three-point, overtime win against then-No. 25 and previously undefeated UNLV in Las Vegas. That result marked the second instance in the 2024 season that the 'Cuse beat an opponent that was ranked in the major top-25 polls at the time the game was played.

In September, at the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse football also defeated then-No. 23 Georgia Tech by three points.

The Orange began its 2024 campaign, under first-year head coach Fran Brown, with four consecutive encounters on the Hill. Now, in October, the 'Cuse only will suit up on the road, first at UNLV, then at N.C. State this coming weekend, followed by a trip to No. 22 Pittsburgh later this month.

In the latest Associated Press and Coaches top-25 polls that were released on Sunday, Syracuse football received at least one vote in each ballot. The Orange needs two more regular-season triumphs to qualify for a post-season bowl for the third year in a row.

Following week six, numerous national pundits were projecting the 'Cuse to make a bowl game at the conclusion of the current term.

Syracuse football: offense on record shattering pace this season (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

Under a year ago, the Syracuse Orange resorted to running out of the wildcat to generate any semblance of an offense.

Oh how the tables have turned since then.

The Orange are now one of the best offensive teams in the entire nation, averaging the 14th most yards per game through Week 6. The current unit is on pace to break the program’s all-time record for yards in a single season:

MOST TOTAL YARDS PER GAME Season Avg. (Games/Total Yards) Year

1. 476.0 (13/6,188) 2012

2. 463.9 (13/6,031) 2018

3. 456.3 (12/5,476) 2017

4. 451.5 (10/4,515) 1959 (led the country)

5. 440.8 (12/5,290) 2016

6. 440.3 (11/4,843) 1987

7. 433.5 (11/4,769) 1992

8. 430.0 (11/4,730) 1998

9. 427.3 (12/5,127) 1997

10. 407.9 (11/4,487) 1979

The revitalized Orange are led by an explosive air attack generating the third most passing yards per game (369.0), behind only Miami and Ole Miss. The program’s record high was averaging 321.3 passing yards per game in 2016.

It’s mainly thanks to the electric arm of Kyle McCord, the nation’s leading passer. McCord has thrown for over 300 yards in each of his five starts, the first ‘Cuse QB to ever do so. He averaged 317 yards per game as a junior at Ohio State and has increased that number to 362.8 this season.

Syracuse football: Pop-Tarts Bowl O’Meter update (TNIAAM; Tomiauolo)

With its Pop-Tarts Bowl hopes on the line, the Syracuse Orange offense delivered.

Kyle McCord led SU down the field with a game-tying touchdown drive in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, and LeQuint Allen put the game on ice with a walk-off touchdown in a 44-41 overtime win against UNLV.

Here’s how last week’s dub reflected on our weekly Pop-Tarts Bowl O’Meter:

Now sitting at 4-1, the Orange have a great chance to make the postseason and compete in a high-stakes bowl game. Of course, the Pop-Tarts Bowl is the cream of the crop for bowl season, and we’ve never been closer to making our dreams a reality.

But do the “experts” agree with our Pop-Tart hopes and dreams? Let’s check out where the college football world projects Syracuse in the postseason this week:

Why the ACC is the big winner after a wild, upset-filled Week 6 in college football (usatoday.com; Patton)

A chaotic Week 6 left the College Football Playoff projections in disarray after shocking losses by powerhouses like Alabama, Missouri, Michigan, USC, and even Group of Five darling UNLV. With so many upsets, the road to the playoff has shifted dramatically for several teams.
The ACC managed to escape relatively unscathed from the Week 6 storm. Miami, however, nearly fumbled their undefeated record, needing yet another controversial officiating decision in their nail-biting win over Cal to stay perfect. Still, their brush with defeat didn’t go unnoticed.
USA TODAY’s Erick Smith responded to the close call by dropping the Hurricanes from his coveted top-four playoff seeds, pushing Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers into prime position for an automatic CFP bid.
Below, you’ll find the updated outlook on which ACC teams are poised to make a run in the latest College Football Playoff projections. Additionally, we’ve outlined the bowl games each ACC squad is projected to compete in as we look ahead to Week 7 of this wild season.

College Football Playoff Projections

While Miami is no longer the autobid winner in the ACC, the ‘Canes still get a spot in the 12-team playoff as the No. 9 seed. That pits them against No. 8 seed Penn State, who Miami would face on the road. The winner of that game would face the Texas Longhorns, the No. 1 overall seed, in the Sugar Bowl.
Clemson earns the No. 3 overall seed, where they would play in the Peach Bowl against the winner between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Oregon Ducks.

Other Bowl Games

10 other ACC programs are projected to play in bowl games after Week 6, which would give fans of the conference a total of 12 bowl games to tune into this winter.
Below is a look at each projected ACC bowl matchup, which for the first time this season includes the 4-1 Virginia Cavaliers:
NC State Wolfpack vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (Duke’s Mayo Bowl)
SMU Mustangs vs. LSU Tigers (Gator Bowl)
Virginia Tech Hokies vs. USC Trojans (Sun Bowl)
Louisville Cardinals vs. Memphis Tigers (Military Bowl)
Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (Pop-Tarts Bowl)
Syracuse Orange vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (Pinstripe Bowl)
Boston College Eagles vs. Tulane Green Wave (Fenway Bowl)
Duke Blue Devils vs. Utah Utes (Holiday Bowl)
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Arkansas Razorbacks (Birmingham Bowl)
Virginia Cavaliers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (Gasparilla Bowl)

BOZICH | Louisville losing ground in ACC football power rankings (wdrb.coml Bozich)

A week ago, I calculated that the Louisville football team would close its schedule against eight opponents with a combined record of 28-8.

You can scratch SMU from the list after the Mustangs upset UofL at L&N Cardinal Stadium. But the Cards' list of future opponents went 4-2 last week (Kentucky was idle) with one team on the schedule (Boston College) losing to the program (Virginia) that Louisville will visit this Saturday.

That leaves seven remaining opponents with a combined record of 28-9 — with four future opponents unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

"Even last year, there was a lot of parity in the league," U of L coach Jeff Brohm said.

"There's a lot of good, solid football teams. Even last year, of our wins, a lot of games we had to pull out in the very end. In order to pull out those wins, you've got to be sharp at all the things you're doing."

On to this week's ACC Power Ratings.

  1. Clemson (4-1 overall, 3-0 in ACC): The Tigers have quietly bounced back from the opening game gut-punch by Georgia to win their next four by an average of four touchdowns. The only flashing light is they're giving up 371 yards per game.
  2. Miami (6-0, 2-0): The Hurricanes lead the league by averaging nearly 48 points per game with quarterback Cam Ward throwing 20 touchdown passes But they still needed an overturned review against Virginia Tech and a missed targeting call against Cal to hold their undefeated status. If you follow social media (not recommended), the conspiracy theory is the ACC wants the Hurricanes in the playoff.
  3. SMU (5-1, 2-0): The Mustangs lead the ACC in rushing yards at 203 per game, and the analytics at ESPN project SMU will be favored in their final six games. See you in Charlotte.
  4. Pitt (5-0, 1-0): Only two ACC teams are averaging more than 500 yards of total offense per game. One is Miami. The other is the Panthers. Quarterback Eli Holstein bolted after not playing last season at Alabama — and has delivered 15 touchdown passes with only three picks. He looks legit.
  5. Virginia (4-1, 2-0): The Cavalier rank eighth in the ACC in total offense and 14th in total defense. Their leading rusher, Xavier Brown, averages 63 yards per game. Their quarterback, Anthony Colandrea, has only eight touchdown passes with four picks. How is Virginia 4-1? The Cavaliers have limited four of their five opponents to 27 points or less.
  6. Louisville (3-2, 1-1): The Cards still must play four of the five teams I ranked ahead of them and they just finished with SMU. It's a challenge. It's also an opportunity.
  7. Georgia Tech (4-2, 2-2): The Yellow Jackets lead the league in rushing defense, allowing 88 yards per game and just two rushing touchdowns all season. But they've whiffed in both road games: at Syracuse and Louisville.
  8. Duke (5-1, 1-1): Jeff Sagarin's computer formula says the Blue Devils have played the easiest schedule of any ACC team. Instead of Elon and Middle Tennessee State, Miami and SMU are ahead.
  9. Boston College (4-2, 1-1): The Eagles have failed to score more than 23 points in their last four games and were fortunate to survive Michigan State and Western Kentucky. The good times are unlikely to last.
  10. Syracuse (4-1, 1-1): Congrats to quarterback Kyle McCord who walked away from the starting job at Ohio State after all the social media heat he took for losing to Michigan. He's ranked the No. 2 passer in the ACC, throwing 363 yards per game.
  11. California (3-2, 0-2): The Bears will make their third cross country trip in five weeks Saturday while trying to spoil Pitt's unbeaten season. They're also eight points — and several bad calls — shy of being unbeaten.

Virginia Football: ACC Football Power Rankings (SI; Baller)

Virginia football was picked to finish second to last in the ACC preseason poll. The Cavaliers have shocked many this season and are not the only poor assessment as the projected number one Florida State has plummeted down the ACC with a 1-4 conference record. With that said, here are our week 7 ACC Football power rankings:

#1 Clemson Tigers (4-1, 3-0 ACC)

Clemson has reentered the top ten of the AP Poll after earning its fourth straight win after suffering a crushing defeat to Georgia in week one. The Tigers have a powerful defense that has allowed them to build massive leads in the first half before putting their foot on the gas in the second half. Further, Cade Klubnik has found a rhythm at quarterback as Dabo Swinney may finally prove he can build an ACC championship-winning team without using the transfer portal.

#2 SMU Mustangs (5-1, 2-0 ACC)

I acknowledge that this is a hot take putting the Mustangs over undefeated Miami, but SMU's powerhouse offense can take this team anywhere. After a challenging first three games of the season where the Mustangs fell to BYU and nearly lost to Nevada, things have clicked in Dallas as SMU has scored 30+ points in its last three games. For a school that forfeited nine years of ACC television revenue to get an invite to the ACC, they are drawing plenty of eyeballs.

#3 Miami Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 ACC)

The Hurricanes may be undefeated, but their record only tells part of the story. Miami should have lost to Virginia Tech on a hail mary that was shockingly overturned and mounted a 21-3 fourth quarter to defeat California last week. All of these close victories indicate that Miami is due for a loss. Cam Ward is a legit Heisman contender, completely revolutionizing this Mario Cristobal offense.

#4 Louisville Cardinals (3-2, 1-1 ACC)

This team has kept it close with ranked opponents SMU and Notre Dame but has yet to record a signature win, losing to both by a touchdown. Tyler Slough has proven himself to be a surefire pass-happy quarterback for the Cardinals, but when will Slough and the company earn a first statement win?

#5 Virginia Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0 ACC)

The Cavaliers have silenced doubters, already surpassing their 3.5 season win total in only five games, but how will Virginia fare during its second, much more challenging half of the season? The Cavaliers beating Boston College was a massive first step in the right direction as belief is beginning to sprinkle into Charlottesville that Tony Elliott has turned this program around.

#6 Pittsburgh Panthers (5-0, 1-0 ACC)

The ACC's other undefeated team besides Miami has surprised many, being one game away from bowl eligibility after the first week of October. Credit quarterback Eli Holstein for his performances this season with 1,564 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and three interceptions, Pitt's best quarterback numbers since Kenny Pickett. Despite this, Pittsburgh has yet to beat a team resembling a ranked opponent.

#7 Syracuse Orange (4-1, 1-1 ACC)

Without a disappointing 26-24 loss to Stanford, this team is undefeated. The Orange has figured out how to win close games with victories over Georgia Tech and UNLV, proving they are certainly a threat in the ACC. Syracuse's matchup against Pittsburgh on October 24th will give us an accurate barometer of whether this team is a contender or a pretender.

Miami vs. Cal Full Game Replay | 2024 ACC Football (youtube; video; ACC DN)

The 8th-ranked Hurricanes pulled off a miraculous fourth-quarter comeback against the Golden Bears to win, 39-38. The Hurricanes trailed 35-10 with 18 minutes left in the game, and Cam Ward connected with Elijah Arroyo on a 5-yard touchdown with 26 seconds left in the game for the game-winning score. Miami outgained Cal 278-26 in the fourth quarter and outscored the Bears 21-3 in the final quarter. Cam Ward was 35-53 passing the ball for 437 yards and two passing touchdowns, with a 24-yard rushing touchdown as well. Miami wide receiver Xavier Restrepo caught 7 passes for 163 yards, including a 77-yard reception on Miami's final drive. For Cal, quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 11-22 for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jaydn Ott had 77 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns.

ACC Football: Week 7 slate, all on Saturday, gives you 11 hours of TV watching (augustafreepress.com; Graham)

Somebody at ESPN fumbled with the ACC Football schedule this week.

No Thursday or Friday games? What are we supposed to do – spend time with the fam?

Because of bye weeks, there are only six games on the schedule, but because they’re all on Saturday, the schedule-makers were able to get it so that the day starts at noon and ends after 11 p.m., if they can keep you tuned in to watch Syracuse-NC State.

(You’ve got a serious problem if you’re still watching ACC Football with that one being the prime-time game.)

The defense of the Hokies racked up 5.0 sacks, 11.0 tackles for loss, snagged 2 interceptions and forced 2 fumbles. Stanford running back Micah Ford was responsible for the only points on the day for the Cardinal, tossing a touchdown pass on a trick play touchdown to receiver Elic Ayomanor.

According to Chris from "Bless Your Chart", we can figure out who's overrated and who's underrated, by looking at records against the spread. That's exactly what he did in his latest article, "111: ATS summary". Here's his chart, along with comments on the ACC teams in it:
The Pitt Panthers are a perfect 4-0-0 against the spread so far this season...

...while both the NC State Wolfpack and N Carolina Tar Heels are a winless 0-4-1 ATS (ouch!).

All Sports Discussion asks: did the 4th quarter against Duke save Georgia Tech's season? They may have a point! The Yellow Jackets have a murderous schedule (as usual), and they still need 2 more wins to go bowling. If they can beat UNC this weekend, they'll just need to split @VT and NC State. I also think there's a slight chance GT upsets Notre Dame in the Mercedez Benz dome.

A global restaurant wave is about to hit downtown Syracuse: 3 new places will open this month (PS; Cazentre)

A French bistro with an in-house butcher. A Peruvian eatery with a “fusion” flair. A venue that serves Caribbean cuisine and doubles as an upscale Latin dance club.

These three downtown restaurants — Touché, Inka’s and 809 Lounge and Restaurant — are all due to open in the next few weeks.

Coupled with the recent debuts of The Whiskey Coop and the Sugar Grove Cafe & Bakery, they represent one of the biggest waves of new downtown restaurant openings in recent memory. And more are in the pipeline.

“If that’s happened before, that many in such a short time frame, it’s been a long time,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. “And just look at all those different cuisines. That’s what’s noteworthy.”

The new openings are helping the downtown Syracuse restaurant scene return from the battering it took during the Covid pandemic and its aftermath.

And each of the new places coming downtown will be run by people who already operate existing restaurants and clubs in the area.

“That makes sense because these are people who saw the potential of downtown, have had success, and are now seeing potential to grow,” Treier said.

Here’s a look at the three upcoming openings.

Touché

Location: 311 W. Fayette St. That building has recently been home to the original Le Melange (before it relocated), and earlier housed The Stoop and the Scratch Bake House.

Expected opening date: Oct. 12

Details: Co-owner Bob Leonard said he and his partners are aiming for a place that offers elements of a fine-dining experience but not so elaborate that it takes all night.

It will combine elements of a French bistro, with dishes like Steak Frites, and other European cuisines, like the Austrian Wiener Schnitzel.

“We’re looking at a seasonal approach, using local New York suppliers,” said chef Jeff Deloff.

A special feature of Touché is the in-house butcher station in the basement. That’s where Deloff will make his own cuts of beef, pork and lamb.

A turkey sandwich from Salt City Bread in Manlius. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Bakery known for long lines and king-size sandwiches branching out near SU campus (PS; Miller)

A bakery in Manlius that regularly draws long lines of lunchtime customers is opening a sandwich shop near the Syracuse University campus.

The owners of Salt City Bread are opening a restaurant in Nottingham Plaza, 9 miles away from their original storefront. Salt City Sandwich is taking over the spot left vacant by A La Mode Cafe.

Andrea and Chris DeVita expect to open the cafe by the end of the year.

“Think of it as really good sandwiches on really good bread,” Andrea said. “It’s the sandwiches we make now and a lot more.”

The DeVitas opened Salt City Bread three years ago in a shopping plaza at 8240 Cazenovia Road, just down the street from downtown Manlius. The bakery sells yeasted and pre-fermented breads and bagels on Wednesdays through Sundays. Their most popular breads are the rosemary focaccia, sourdough and the baguette, all topped with flaked salt from the Syracuse Salt Co.

During lunch, customers stand in line for their oversized sandwiches that can easily feed two people. That includes the turkey on white: Boar’s Head roasted turkey on their white sandwich bread with muenster cheese, leaf lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise and locally made honey mustard.

Andrea and Chris decided over the summer they wanted to branch out and open a second business. On an August afternoon while looking at storefronts, they pulled into Nottingham Plaza, located at 331 Nottingham Road in DeWitt, just over the city line.

With eye toward Micron’s impact, 137-year-old bank to open first Syracuse-area branch (PS; $; Moriarty)

A bank with a nearly 140-year history in Upstate New York plans to open its first Syracuse-area branch next year.

Canandaigua National Bank & Trust said Monday it plans to open multiple branches in the Syracuse area over the next three years, with at least one expected to open in 2025.

Individual locations will be announced as details are finalized, the bank said. The expansion is subject to regulatory approvals.

Bank President and CEO Frank Hamlin III said the bank has been eyeing the Syracuse area for several years following its growth in the Canandaigua and Rochester areas.

“It’s just a natural direction for us,” he said.

He said the bank has also been encouraged by the anticipated growth of the technology sector in the Syracuse area with its recent designation as part of a tech hub corridor.

A regional collaboration of Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo won a $40 million federal grant in July to boost the semiconductor industry in Upstate New York. The money is to be used to train workers to build and work in semiconductor plants, build semiconductor supply chains, and subsidize laboratories and testing equipment for small and minority-owned businesses.

The grant comes two years after Micron Technology Inc. announced it has selected a site in the Syracuse suburb of Clay for a massive semiconductor plant.

In addition to retail banking services, Canandaigua National said it will offer business banking, commercial lending, mortgage lending and loan origination, wealth management services, estate and trust services, and insurance products in the Syracuse area.

Founded in 1887, the bank operates 25 branches in Ontario and Monroe counties, as well as financial services offices in Canandaigua, Bushnell’s Basin, downtown Rochester and downtown Sarasota, Florida.
