PS Staff Picks for the SU-CMU Game (PS; Murray)
Kiss of death. Bud picked Syracuse...
Damien Rhodes and Bob Casullo break down CMU’s Thomas Rawls, why is he so dangerous?(cnycentral.com; Tamurian)
Hot Pick from the Hot Dog- Jack picks SU vs. Central Michigan (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)
Why 8 Wins Remains Realistic for SU Football (sujuiceonline.com; Stechschulte)
Yes, that was me. I was the one who said “eight wins” for Syracuse during the regular season.
And, even after how the Orange were lucky to escape their opener a couple weeks ago with an unlikely double overtime win against lower-division opponent Villanova, and the first of the two overtime sessions was forced by the Wildcats missing a short field goal in the waning seconds of regulation, I am sticking with this prediction.
I mean, hey, Villanova was one of those eight wins, anyway.
But, seriously, here is why.
THE DEFENSE:
During Scott Shafer’s five years at SU, the Orange have employed a high-risk, high-reward defense. Shafer wants playmakers and thrusts them into his ultra-aggressive scheme, looking to apply pressure and make impact plays. Pocket passers who lack mobility are more likely to get roughed up by the Orange defense.
Two of the top quarterbacks that the Orange had success against under Shafer, Geno Smith of West Virignia and Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville, were pocket passers. Smith ran for 342 yards in his college career, Bridgewater just under half of that.

Riley Dixon Has Provided Heroics for Syracuse (watertowndailytimes.com; St. Croix)
Many of the people watching Syracuse University’s 27-26 overtime victory against Villanova in the Aug. 29 season opener were shocked to see SU punter/holder Riley Dixon throw the game-winning touchdown pass on a fake field goal.
Christian Brothers Academy football coach Joe Casamento was not among them.
“I thought it was a great call by the coach, I mean, he’s a good athlete,” Casamento said of the 6-foot-5, 221-pound Dixon, whom he coached at CBA until Dixon graduated in 2011.
“He was a quarterback for us and he can throw the ball and he’s smart. That’s why he’s on scholarship, he does his job.”
Dixon’s heroics allowed the Orange (1-0) to enter Saturday’s noon game at Central Michigan (2-0) on ESPNNews with a chance to start 2-0 for just the second time since 2000.
Dixon, a senior who became just the 11th non-quarterback to throw a touchdown for SU since 1980, said he played under center all through youth football until he was a junior in high school.
“Being in the position I’m in, many people think: ‘He’s not an athlete, he’s just a guy that punts the ball and he doesn’t really care.’ That’s just the stereotype of kickers and the punter position at the moment,” Dixon said.

Week 3 ACC Preview (atlanticcoastconfidential.com; acaffrey)
Welcome to Week #3. Check out our latest poll, and remember to get your week’s entry in for our fantasy football contest. It is free… with prizes. And you can join anytime. Here are this week’s games:
Saturday
Syracuse (1-0) @ Central Michigan (2-0), 12:00 pm. Syracuse was a sleeper team for some. They seemed asleep against Villanova, a game replete with coaching errors, missed assignments, and a QB ejection that nearly cost the Orange the game. Meanwhile, Central Michigan cannot be taken lightly, especially at home. This is a danger zone for Syracuse. It is hard to see a loss here and a bowl game.
East Carolina (1-1) @ #17 Virginia Tech (2-0), 12:00 pm. The enter ACC stood up and applauded Virginia Tech for taking down Ohio State. And now the reality sets in that Virginia Tech may be a contender. If Virginia Tech thumps East Carolina–that is one more proverbial feather in the cap for the Hokies. The important thing is avoiding the let down that has plagued some of Frank Beamer’s teams in the past.
Georgia Southern (1-1) @ Georgia Tech (2-0), 12:00 pm. It is hard to tell what to make of Georgie Tech. And a win against Georgia Southern will not answer many questions either. What we do know is that Georgia Tech has done what they have needed to do to be 2-0. And 3-0 is better than all the alternatives.
Pittsburgh (2-0) @ Florida International (1-1), 12:00 pm. The Panthers are suddenly an interesting team. They have looked great on defense, but the emergence of James Conner as a Heisman Trophy candidate to compliment Tyler Boyd is really putting Pitt on the map. Could we see the Panthers enter the top 25 for the first time in quite a while? Perhaps. But a win against Florida International must come first.
