Transition: SU Defensive Vets Prepare to Give Way to Youth, Lester Discusses Philips (DO; Dougherty)
Though senior Cameron Lynch was Syracuse’s leading tackler and one of the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference, he feels comfortable handing off the keys to the Orange’s defense to its younger players, such as freshman Zaire Franklin.
In a way, Lynch already has.
“Knowing he calls the plays, I took a backseat because he can handle everything,” Lynch said. “As long as he keeps his head on straight, he’ll be a great player here. He’s in a better spot than I was when I was a freshman.”
Boston College’s (7-5, 4-4 ACC) 28-7 victory over SU (3-9, 1-7) on Saturday signified the end of an era for a number of the Orange’s defensive contributors, many of whom will graduate and some of whom may receive NFL opportunities. But the conclusion of the 2014 season also capped off the first year of hands-on experience for a few promising young Syracuse defenders.
After a 10-tackle performance at Pittsburgh on Nov. 22, Franklin made six stops against the Eagles, including a sack for a loss of 8 yards in his third consecutive start. Freshman cornerback Antwan Cordy chipped in two assisted tackles in his first career start.

Long Turns In Poor Performance, Lester Discusses Hunt as Part of Improvements for Next Season (DO; Dougherty)
Since becoming Syracuse’s offense coordinator five games into the season, Tim Lester’s overlooked games from the coach’s booth.
As a result, his reactions to his offense’s struggles have gone unseen. That is until he stood on the sideline for the entirety of Syracuse’s (3-9, 1-7 Atlantic Coast) 28-7 loss to Boston College (7-5, 4-4) at Alumni Stadium on Saturday, as his offense — most notably freshman quarterback AJ Long — turned in one last dud to put a woeful season in perspective.
Lester spent most of the game talking with Long and rallying his offense onto and off the field.
But when Long threw an interception right into the arms of Eagles linebacker Mike Strizak on the second play of the second half, Lester hung his head.
“The good thing is I get to go back and watch AJ,” Lester said. “… He just didn’t hit anybody.”

What a difference one season makes. At this time last year, everyone was certain the program was headed in the right direction, and that Shafer was the right coach to lead the Orange. Any good will that Shafer built with a 7-6 season and a bowl win against Minnesota has mostly evaporated with this 3-9 season.
Is Shafer on the hot seat? Well, Shafer can certainly eliminate any notion of him being on the hot seat with a bowl appearance next year. The reality is, even a 5-7 season should be enough for him to keep his job. But all bets are off for a fourth season if Shafer has a repeat (or worse) of this season. I know what you’re saying: “Well, He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named” got four seasons. Why shouldn’t Shafer?
