Fort Drum Waste of Time

Have to hope and think they look at all pre season prep and make some tweaks or changes

It's one thing to do it for five days, it would be another all year.
it's just been something i've been thinking about with our offense, the types of players we get, limited hours

part of me thinks we need some nascar pitt crew coach completely focused on super efficient practices and playbooks

i hate to even say air raid, but weak qbs and WRs get a million reps as everyone is catching and throwing every second. that explains why the defenses always blow too.

There are NCAA restrictions on the number of hours you're allowed to practice each week.

SU practices the exact same amount of time whether they're at Manley or Ft Drum.

False.

Preseason Practice – Hour limitations do not apply during preseason practice prior to the first day of classes or the first scheduled contest, whichever is earlier.

note to self: thruwaywest's posts = waste of time.

theyre going to Ft Drum, not Ft Buckner, people. if one forgets their wallet, someone can go back and get it for them to have before lunch.

do they not have grass fields in Ft Drum??

do trucks with fruits and veggies not go there??

do our team trainers not bother to go??

absurd.

Army posts, especially for light infantry, are very spartan. There's a huge step down going from P5 facilities to a light infantry post as compared to going from an NFL facility to whatever college campus an NFL team inhabits during training camp.

Are the football and the field the same size?

Then every FB coach going back to Coach Mac was lying.

Practices during the season are regulated. Preseason practices are not. Why do you think they are able to have two-a-days?

2 tractor trailers of equipment went up with them.

I assume they had all the weight equipment, and video equipment they needed. I assume they brought footballs and I know they painted out a field. I assumed many of the people on this forum played some sports along they way.

I don't think it should end. I think it's awesome.

Does anyone think that those 4 or 5 days is the difference between 3-9 and a national title?

There's still an hours limit per week.

That's what Mac, Coach P, and Marrone all told me.

In fact, Marrone said that the NCAA monitors practice hours, and they can go after a school that breaks the rules.

The weight rooms at Drum arent all that bad.. There is a good sized weight room about about a 1/4 mile from the barracks these guys sleep at.

i assume that practices are less efficient there. if it isn't, makes you wonder why schools spend so much on practice facilities

It doesn't make me wonder. practice facilities are so they dont use their stadiums and have their own un-shared space. Practice year round and help with inclement weather, as well as simulated conditions; grass and turf etc.

What kind of practice facilities are you talking though - fields or weight rooms?

I don't see any reason why the practice would be less efficient.

During the school year, absolutely.

When school is not in session, the teams can practice as much as they want. There are mandatory non-hit rules in place for football, but if they want to do 11-on-0 drills they can do that until its 2AM in the morning.

a 1/4mile!!!! jiminy crickets, just how the does anyone expect them to get there??

come one. cite the actual rule book, not notre dames compliance. of course brian kelly can practice as much as he wants.

if i'm wrong fine, but to my knowledge there are time limits or else everybody would be having 4 a days for a month.

so with all this said - are we practicing less at Drum than if we were home? No we are not.

you don't really think they practice less than allotted while they're up there do you?

it might be argued the team building experience up there is the single biggest reason why the team never quits, sticks with each other and fights to the bitter end.

the way the season went he could've lost the locker room and he didn't.

Like I said I dont have any issue with the Fort Drum experience if they want to keep it going more power to them. My only point is based on the results of this past season it might be best to take a year off and keep everything local and maxmimize every second of practice and learning time. Keepign the lockerroom together is great but if he goes 3-9 next year it wont matter how close or together the players are they will be getting a new coach.

17.9.2.3 Five-Day Acclimatization Period. [FBS/FCS] In football, preseason practice shall begin with a five-day acclimatization period for both first-time participants (e.g., freshmen and transfers) and continuing student-athletes. All student-athletes, including walk-ons who arrive to preseason practice after the first day of practice, are required to undergo a five-day acclimatization period.
(b) During the five-day period, participants shall not engage in more than one on-field practice per day, not to exceed three hours in length.

17.9.2.4 Preseason Activities After Five-Day Acclimatization Period. [FBS/FCS] The remaining preseason practice period shall be conducted as follows:
(a) After the five-day period, institutions may practice in full pads. However, an institution may not conduct multiple on-field practice sessions (e.g., two-a-days or three-a-days) on consecutive days;
(b) Student-athletes shall not engage in more than three hours of on-field practice activities on those days during which one practice is permitted;
(c) Student-athletes shall not engage in more than five hours of on-field practice activities on those days during which more than one practice is permitted; and
(d) Student-athletes must be provided with at least three continuous hours of recovery time between any two sessions (e.g., practices, walk-throughs). During this time, student-athletes may not engage in physical athletically related activities (e.g., weight lifting). Time spent in team meetings, film review, receiving medical treatment and eating meals may be included as part of the recovery time.

i always the figured the practice facility was more about the film rooms, the billiards room, the xbox room, the movie theatre, the locker room, etc and not about the actual field they practice on for 3 hrs or whatever a day.

its more about the learning facility and the down time.

and for 1 week a year, they go old school and rough it out, bond as a team...etc.

Agree, the paintball was cool 6 years ago and stuff but now it needs to end..

Hit the weights dammit

Truth is that no one here can judge the value from the outside. The metric is "togetherness" "bonding" "trust between players/coaches" - it's really hard to measure these things unless you are there and experiencing it.

I know this is a Syracuse Athletics message and that is our main love... But can we think about how much this trip means for the Soldiers and their families? Soldiers being able to work out with, train, and hang with a D1 football team. Kids, who's parents might be over seas, getting to have a practice with the big boys.

They started doing this a year after I left Fort Drum, but man it would have been awesome to be there.
