I don’t really care about retaining players or coaches.

But here’s the deal. If what Dino was doing wasn’t an acceptable level of success (6-7 wins a season), then the point of all of this is to aim higher than that. And how you do that is by bringing in talent. Period. And I personally struggle with how Chesney is going to do that, especially if he carries over most of his HC staff. It’s not going to be that much different than Dino carrying over his BG staff except at least those guys coached at the FBS level.

Fran Brown at a minimum has major recruiting connections in all of our key areas and he will build a staff of P5 experienced coaches because he has built up some solid P5 connections over the years.

So for me, I’d rather take the risk on that profile who hasn’t been a HC yet vs the career HC who’s not even coached at the FBS level or recruited kids at the P5 level. We need talent!
Dino was not regularly providing 6-7 win seasons

I can’t believe people are justifying this because we will retain some players and coaches. You guys really think chesney wouldn’t do the same?
To be sitting here arguing over candidates when nobody has any clue who will be good or not is pointless. You have no clue if Chesney would or would not be better than Brown.

Dino had a 7 win season last season and would have had a 6 win season this season in back to back seasons. That was not acceptable. You’re not going to achieve better hiring Dino 2.0.

I mean think about a lot of kids he recruited the past 2-3 years that hit the portal from all over as well. Solid network

It would be hilarious (in a sad crying kind of way) if JW has to sit a presser and announce a new HC that meets none of the criteria that he had previously laid out.

Well, one criterion - Northeast ties. He's from NJ. But people who think he's going to recruit at the same level for Syracuse as he can for a national title contender at Georgia are kidding themselves. A DB coach?? Not even a coordinator before? Seems like a disaster waiting to happen. This guy, Candle or Chesney. Depressing.

I'm sorry but I see a lot of people talking themselves into this hire. This time last week we were bosting about playing "big boy football" with Mullen, Golden, etc. Now we hire a DB coach and everyone is pumped about it. I get the recruiting angle here but to me this is exactly the type of coach we didn't want this time last week.

Wildhack betting his career on two unknowns in Autry and now Fran Brown is some type of gamble for him. Hope he's right on one of them.
It's not the recruiting angle.

Well, yeah, a little bit.

It's the portal angle.

This hire is going to pay dividends for the next 3-4 portal cycles.

We are not going to get 4 and 5 star kids so what advantage does hiring a pure recruiter have? We need a guy who has connections to find overlooked 2 and 3 star guys, and also has the ability to coach those kids up. Like what Marrone did. This seems like McFIt but HC instead of OC. The chances of a complete disaster are way higher here.

We need a coach who knows how to RUN A P5 PROGRAM.

I don’t think anyone thinks he’s going to recruit here like he does at Georgia, even saying that made me laugh, it’s totally unrealistic. I think there’s a good chance he does really well for us in the portal and he gets us in with some jersey kids we otherwise wouldn’t have a chance with. We have a ceiling in recruiting at Syracuse and I think Fran has the chance to take us to that ceiling. What we have to hope for is that he builds and constructs a staff capable of coaching up that talent.

Does any of that matter, if the guy can't coach? Talented teams lose all the time. Look at Texas for the last 15 years
Well we don’t know if he can or can’t coach as a HC. But if he can plus all the other variables, then you have some extreme upside here over any other candidate.

So seems like a number of updates in the media about Syracuse and Brown. Is it fair to say official leaks are coming out on this? Seems like there is some chatter happening.
