Fran Brown

“13 wins in his first two seasons…

We are Syracuse University — not a blue blood, not a cash-printing SEC titan, not a program with a conveyor belt of five-stars. So let’s put Fran’s start in perspective by comparing him to our past coaches:
  • Dino Babers: 8 wins (4 + 4) — had HC experience
  • Scott Shafer: 9 wins (7 + 2)
  • Doug Marrone: 12 wins (4 + 8) — no HC experience
  • Greg Robinson: 5 wins (1 + 4)
  • Paul Pasqualoni: 20 wins (10 + 10) — inherited loaded rosters
  • Dick MacPherson: 8 wins (4 + 4)
  • Frank Maloney: 8 wins (2 + 6)
  • Ben Schwartzwalder: 10 wins (5 + 5)

Fran Brown: 13 wins (and a 10-win season already — one of only a handful in program history).

He has the second-most wins through two seasons of any Syracuse coach since WWII not named Paul Pasqualoni.

People keep crying, “But he had no head-coaching experience!”
Cool. Neither did Saint Dougy when he walked in the door. I guess that was magically okay because he carried binders or something.

This program is already better than it has been for most of the 21st century. The recruiting is better. The energy is better. The overall feel is better.

But sure — the galaxy-brain solution is to toss him out after Year 2 like yesterday’s trash.
**Brilliant. Truly visionary stuff.
If people want to ride with the argument that this year's problems result largely from the injury to the starting quarterback they have to be prepared for the counter that last year's success can largely be credited to a one year unicorn at quarterback.

Are you serious??? Franklin got fired from Penn State for not being able to beat Ohio State enough (ever). Clemson boards are turning on Dabo this year. Fans are not all that masochistic. Win or lose your job. Used to be coaches got 5-7 years. Now it is 3ish. Fran has one more year.

Amazing how many coaches have been rumored to leave for a better job and then started losing. Brown was SEC bound after Clemson. Rhule lost the week after PSU opener. UCLA fire its coach and White’s FSU defense collapsed. Brown, Key, etc. I think we need to start some OBrien to the Giants rumors and see if that helps us best BC next week…

Hes been here less than 2 years. Jesus. Guy has a great class coming in next season. We are a mediocre lower to middle level program. Get a freaking grip

I'm pretty sure a bunch of people have said both statements.

Fran has proven he can get his QB that will lead the team and he has pulled in some nice pieces on defense BUT it's not clicking for sure.
This dive is not all on losing our starting QB just like 10 wins where not all on McCord last year, both have pulled huge rolls in it BUT alot more go into both.

Just had our biggest ever loss and going geee what is wrong with the reactions on here is just funny.

It is pretty bleak. Of course Fran is back next year, but seriously this team is a dumpster fire all around, expect people on a fan form to be a little fired up they were down basically 42 at the end of the freaking 1st quarter.

Someone let Lupica know that B.C. has zero wins against D-1 teams.
they only lost to ND 10-25 and almost beat GTech. They have a legit P4 QB in Lonergan, BC 31, Syracuse 13. We have completely hit rock bottom. Brown's seat is now blazing.

At this stage in Brown's HC career, extremely short track record, etc., I don't think anyone should really have to be too prepared for that counter as it's a pretty simple connecting the dots type train of thought.

He decided to play young players. The result is we’re getting killed. Right or wrong, Fran moved on from veteran players. He knew after the injury this was a lost season.
This is the key. If you’re calling for his head, you don’t understand this point. This season was a tough one right from the get go, but went to pot during the Clemson win w Steve’s injury.

Whole story. There is nothing else.

So what?

we will have another mega new coach thread on this site complete with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Flight Aware and New York State Thruway lookouts after Brown's 7th loss next season eliminating us from bowl contention. Expect it around this time next year or earlier.

It’s OK. We’ve only lost 39-11 on average for each of the past 7 games. Everything is totally cool.
I’m fine w losing and I’m fine w situations which are unlucky. I’m also fine w a rough schedule making it worse . We are Syracuse, a terrible football program since 2000 or so. I’m fine w the expectation of this.

I’m totally not fine w quitting, zero game plan, giving up when it gets tough. This was embarrassing. I’m not sure Fran is a head coach. I think he’s a salesman. Works when you have sold yourself to the right guys and have something to sell. We have terrible coordinators. The papering over of this w McCord really illustrated now.

maybe it works out and I’m an idiot. I just don’t think Fran is smart. At Syracuse u need a smart coach who can scheme out of issues we always have. P had dynamic coordinators, even Marrone did.

Anyway I’m sure I’m wrong. But it’s a message board. I’ll message away

Hopefully your son, family will not say that about you. We will all be justified by our words and how we treat others.

Certainly the worst loss in modern history, only surpassed if you go back to 1893. How about you leave his family out of the discussion, and drop your sermon.

Didnt we win 10 games last season?

Our fan base sucks. I hate it
I think most people have not forgotten about his season last year but it’s the way we lost. I’m not a Collins fan but I’d like to think we wouldn’t of lost that badly on national tv

I am seeing a LOT of posts on X [Twitter] of people saying that Fran purposely threw this game because he hates Miami. One even said he heard that the players were told to throw the game. I don't believe it for a second. But I don't know what to believe about Fran.
I don’t buy this for a second.. you can “throw” a game and still not set records in both college football and SU in a loss. This was beyond embarrassing.

We are the 1st team on college football “ever” to be losing 21-0 without the opponent’s offense getting on the field.

Worst loss since 1800 something.

This was not even ugly. I never thought we could get worse than GRob but Fran said, hold my beer.

So, I’m still optimistic about next year.

But……… I’ve never ever seen a game where it’s 21-0 AND the other team has yet to run a play. That’s pretty special bad. You almost have to try to be that bad.

I may watch Dumb and Dumber again today for some sustenance.

I appreciate the context here; I think a lot of us got spoiled last season very quickly. And there's still a chance for 14 wins.

Better is subjective though. Under Fran we've been a glass cannon and we've fired it twice. One season (under the best recruit at QB we've maybe ever seen) fired successfully, and the second blew up shards of glass in our face.

Fire that same glass cannon 10 times. If our outcome is either a Rickie or McCord, we're going to get more of the former. Now, given all the intangibles it's absurd to call for Fran's job at this point, but I feel pretty strongly he needs to change his strategy here. He's played 'never take the points' with the seasons as a whole and if that were to continue I do see him becoming one of the also-ran names.
