Fran Brown

Last year was incredible. Easily one of the most entertaining SU football seasons of my lifetime.

We have lost our last seven games by a combined score of 275-77, and a lot of the points in the 77 were just garbage points after the game was no longer in doubt. With the exception of the Pitt and UNC games where there was a shred of life in the 2nd half, every other game was completely unwatchable after halftime.

The fact that people are angry is healthy. It means they still care. What's way worse is apathy when people simply stop caring and decide it's not worth the financial and emotional investment.

You can love 2024, be livid at 2025, and be optimistic about 2026 all at the same time. None are mutually exclusive.

The way in which we have barely been competitive, if at all, is what scares me.

I don't think Fran should be fired and I understand Syracuse is a P4 team that will always have injuries hit harder than those teams at the top of the SEC and B1G, etc.

But yesterday was the culmination of it looking really really bad. Like we didn't know we had a game until the day of.

We went from Angeli to Rickie Collins who basically sprinted to the head of the class in INTs for the country to a fifth string true frosh walk on at QB with the mishandling of Carney sprinkled in there. And that is just the QB position.

The team looked like it was going through the motions. Had bad play calling. And looked ill-prepared.

I loved last year. I am very, very worried what this year is saying. Not just bc of wins/losses, but because of how we have lost. But I am still excited for next year.

The biggest thing that happened this year was Steve Angeli rupturing his Achillies. Before he did, he was the best QB in the country. It was almost like a Kyle repeat. The team was full of energy because Steve was a leader and the team bought in. We were on our way to another very good season.

Unfortunately, behind him The QB room was bare. And the coaches had no one to step in and be almost as good unlike some other college teams who stock 4 & 5 stars. So, that was it! It was very obvious when Collins tried to pretend like he was a QB. Filardi a QB at this level?

So now we are stuck. Fran has to get a second QB out of the portal who can compete with Steve and step in if Steve gets injured again. It was like when Steve went down so did the team. They knew he was the leader, then he was gone along with another good year for us.

Finding another QB to back up Steve should be on Frans front burner. Find someone who is a very good QB who has been sitting for two years and wants to play. Fran is going to solve many problems if he does.

I think that Carney and his parents not wanting to burn his redshirt left us with no options when Collins crapped out.

Who says they were not willing? Start him against UNC and let the decision be made. If he wins that game, revisit the issue. Maybe the parents see that he has a chance to make some noise/NIL the rest of the season. If he loses that game, pivot back to redshirting... let Collins have Miami/ND again. Get Filardi some PT in both games. Start Carney against BC, with a plan to use FIlardi in 3rd quarter and at least one drive for Belin.

Colgate scored 24 points on us.

Villanova, Richmond, Georgetown, Merrimack, and Lehigh all allowed fewer points to them.

But how many backup QBs are there on the team? None have quality P4 experience. Maybe they will eventually develop but none seem close as of today. Can't use the entire season as a practice run for the following year.
I was purly talking about couting Angeli as a win.
Backup QBs:
Jakhari Williams - Bench, was a top 50 QB coming out of High School. Not sure what happened here but I would expect him to transfer out.|

Rickie Collins - Game is to fast for him. Top 15 QB coming out of High School. 4 games at LSU in 2 years. He has played in 7 here this year. 54% with 6 TD and 10 INTs will not cut it. Might stick around but will lose any NIL he has so again another transfer out candiate.

Luke Carney - Freshman. Had crazy numbers in high school but was for a private school in Texass. The staffs handlnig of him is questionable at best. Maybe it's something with his throwing motion? Does seem like he can run nicely.

Joesph Filardi - Freshman walk on. Great High School career and another dual threat option. 22% compeltion percentage on start one is not a great look. Accurancy as gone up and sadly he is learning on the job with defenses bringing 8 down and a ton of pressure whilie our OC seems slow to adapt the playbook and now appearts to taking ALOT out of playbook and none of this is working. Really needed the redshirt year.

Rich Belin - NY Gatorade Player of the Year. Might end up being a multi year starting down the road but for now clearly in development.

Fran took over a terrible QB room and has ye tto develop a better one. McCord and Johnson where nice pickups last yaer.
We struck out BIG with Collins.

I also see the actual title of this thread was changed from Fran Clown to Fran Brown for anyone who wants to know exactly why I stated why what I did. Freaking coward. Go into the locker room and see what you find keyboard hero.
It was changed by a moderator during your anger management class

What irks me the most with this season is 1 of 2 things. Fran said pre season Rickie and Steve were neck and neck in competition. Either he was lying very badly about that or our defense is so bad any Qb could look really good. (He also said 2 weeks before filardi played he’s the real deal)

OR Rickie is a workout warrior and can't keep up with the speed of a real game

I disagree with this. We have a ton of size on the lines. With decent coaching, they should be competitive in the trenches. We have not been.
Great coaches don’t have embarrassing losses. Pride wins out.

Even the Belichick carcass of a team is playing better now than in Sept. that’s coaching.

We don’t have a coach or coaches. Amazing that some think this is ok. It’s like a kid resetting Nintendo games because it didn’t go the way he thought it would.

They are 2 different things, and no sport has as big a difference as football.

I've said this a bunch of times now. When the game is "real", and not just practice, those dudes are looking to physically hurt you, and knock you out of a game.

Dirty hits, late hits, targeting, going for a player's knees, throwing him down head-first into the turf - THOSE THINGS ARE NOT ACCIDENTS.

Playing football is barely-controlled violence. In basketball, or lacrosse, or even college hockey, those players are not necessarily trying to injure the opponent. In football, that's the goal.

Not everybody can deal with that.

I agree as Sagan would have had a much better backup and a better backup to that backup

Bingo, that's why I stopped playing football. Everyone got way bigger then me and it really hurt to play 🤣

If you are going to call out someone, you need to point out the part that you object to. You did not do that. Look back at your post - you had the text from the OP, not the thread title. The text was reasonable even though the title might not have been.
Not interested, you can keep your character and I will keep mine. Thank you

Probably a good practice player but chokes when the bright lights are on. Happens in all sports when the action is real and fast and the pressure is on.

Basing this only on what we were told were Pena’s concerns regarding Collin’s, it apparently isn’t just during game situations because the only situations that Pena had with Collin’s were in practice.

Where did you see these concerns Pena had about Collins, I've only read that Pena came asking for more money.

Not sure how publicly reported but Fran alluded to Rickie focusing on things he shouldn't focus on...and that he was being a coach. He did raise concerns about the QB position based on scrimmages. But he also knew we were rectifying it so it goes both ways.

It also wasn't the main reason why Fran let him leave -- he reneged on his contract and asked for more money. And I contend it was the right decision to let him go. Players need to learn contracts exist in the real world. You don't step up and accept a captain role then say, "nah, money's not good enough anymore" when others come sniffing.

Perhaps, due to the hardening that their youth brought them with the realism of being drafted, etc. Whereas today’s younger generation, fortunately, didn’t have to live with such realizations.
LMAO. The only draft Stevenson has been involved with is fantasy football.

He’s my age. No Gen Xer was ever being drafted.

He's just doing the dumb “back in my day” rabble rabble rabble. He grew up with Atari and Debbie Gibson. Truly a hard case.

This reply to my own post is to CanadianSU, oldpinepoint, CuseLegacy, ClkWrkOrange, and powdersmack -- I appreciate that you probably do not like the substance of what I reported in my post (i.e., people saying on X that Fran purposely lost the game) [I don't either] but is your "dislike" about that or that you dislike that I even posted that information on this website? If you don't know, your hitting the "dislike" button treats it as the latter and reduces the poster's total of "likes" on their posts. If I cared about that total (and I don't) I'd hesitate posting any information in the future that I think readers here might be interested to know but might generate "dislikes". Just FYI.
Post information? You posted what you saw on X. I’m sure the dislikes are because no one buys it. It’s bogus.

My take on this is that Fran has gotten his ass kicked this year and it woke him up. In what way? You can’t “build” a roster with mostly HS guys anymore. Fran nailed his first year because he was able to retain basically every key guy who he inherited(the dude is a monster recruiter) and then he went out and got major portal help with Kyle, Diggs, Meeks etc. We were not a major player in the last portal and it showed. Angeli was a home run but got hurt, and while a few other guys have been solid, there wasn’t a Diggs or Meeks in the bunch. Now? At least two of the three kids who decommitted Sunday said Fran called them and said he didn’t have room for them anymore because he is going heavier into the portal. That was the best, and pretty much only, good news this program has had in two months. Now we will see who he can bring in, and what he does with at least a few very necessary staff changes. I think we will do well in the portal this time and we should hang onto most, if not all, of our key HS guys. The portal being the most immediate of importance of course along with player retention(Angeli, Samuels, AD most notably)

He brought in a ton of players last year via the portal, but they haven't been good enough. The portal isn't some magical fix. There isn't a lot out there and the quality that is out there we cannot afford.

IMO the portal in FB should be used to fill holes. I don't think we can build mainly from the portal.

I should have said he did a lot of bargain basement shopping, you are right that the quantity wasn’t much different year over year(16 in 2025 vs 19 in 2024). We can afford better guys than we got this last time. If you build via HS, you need money for retention, so we gotta pay either way. He has a lot of holes to fill and isn’t going to just hope the young kids on the current roster grow up fast
