We didn't play them in 2020 or 2024.
An FSU fan's perspective. Naturally, it leaves out the fact that FSU is spending its way into oblivion (maybe FSU is more ready for the B1G than we assumed) nor addresses the elephant in the room that is Alford, but makes valid points.

Four major reasons FSU can't afford to bring Mike Norvell back in 2026
Mike Norvell has proven he doens't have what it takes to keep FSU a consistent contender in the ACC. Here are four reasons FSU can't bring him back in 2026.chopchat.com
Translation:
IIRC, FSU has a incorporated, high-roller booster organization going back years that could somehow legally dump money into the program.Posted by others in another thread, FSU was attempting to lure Kiffin to Tallahassee. Sorry, using my phone and linking is not working at the moment, or operator error, TBD.
Just curious if FSU can explain where the money would come from to pay off Norvell and crew, then hire a much more expensive coach with a better buyout clause and a more expensive staff. Donors have already balked at buying out Norvell and crew. The AD is in the red and has no plan to manage themselves within a budget. The State will not cover the school like Jersey covers Rutgers. Where is the cash magically coming from?
If the government gets into the NIL game, I hope the slip in a requirement that athletics departments must operate within their means and that the AD cannot exceed a percentage of the university's revenue and ban all cross over funding (charging another department for an AD employee), as well as severe penalties including the "death penalty" for any violation or criminal acts. Basically, what the NCAA should be doing.
Sorry for the rant, FSU is just one anecdotal evidence of a systemic failure that is college sports. Purpose and integrity have long been gone...
I have heard similarly. The real questions are how many high-roller boosters are there and where do they draw the line? The money was withheld from buying out Norvell. Either the money is not available or the money people are not willing to allow Alford to control the money based on his spending behaviors (includes negotiations). I suspect the latter or a combination of the two. Regardless, FSU's AD is deep in the red - some of it necessary modernizing of the stadium, a lot of it foolish spending and negotiations (buyouts). The money will not flow when the real earners see it being spent foolishly. See the Big Ten schools not named UM or USC.IIRC, FSU has a incorporated, high-roller booster organization going back years that could somehow legally dump money into the program.
FSU has the worst administrative structure in college sports, which as we all know, is severely flawed in its own right. So they are the worst of the worst. Hell, their AD Michael Alford's previous gig was the CEO of Seminole Boosters. Think about that. An inmate running the asylum.I have heard similarly. I suspect that Alford lacks financial discipline and the money people are withholding major donations until Alford either rights the financial ship of the FSU Athletics Department or there is a new, financially responsible adult running the AD. Most people with big money earned it, they do not want fools managing their earned money. With Alford's extension of Norvell and the ridiculous buyout, it is hard to believe that he has real management and negotiation skills, especially when we discover that Alford was secretly trying to woo Kiffin
Let's not forget that Alford sold the FSU BOT and money people on the con that FSU could get out of the ACC quick and easily and join the SEC. FSU remains in the ACC. Though the GOR and exit fees were renegotiated FSU cannot leave anytime soon, paid large legal fees, lost money, lost good will (neither the SEC nor B1G wanted FSU as a partner based on Alford's conduct). Simply put, Alford does not give off vibes of being a prudent executive, Alford's recent track record is less than impressive.

Just go read about the BTS story from when Jimbo was forced out. Weird to say this, but a strong FSU is most often best for the ACC. But they are a terrific mess right now and I sense it'll be years before they emerge.
All that said, I can to some reasonable degree understand the covert op to attract the Lane Train to come to Tallahassee. Not because Lane is so amazing, but because he would galvanize any fan base and attract addition monies. But it failed, they've now been outed, and the optic is BRUTAL both internally and externally.
Funny part is that FSU and UF likely could have each had Lane this time last year, but FSU was heavily burdened by debt (FSU spent a crap ton of $$ on stadium upgrades). Timing is everything.
Any chance the 2027 game can be moved to next year?
Penn St needed to be with eastern schools, like Pitt, BC, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Rutgers, Connecticut, and add Louisville, and Miami, Virginia Tech, and Cincinnati. That would have been a good conference for football and basketball.I think what both FSU and Penn State are realizing is they have structural issues that make them les desirable to coaches than other programs. FSU figured it out first, and its part of why they made an unhinged push to join the SEC. However, that's just a band-aid that wouldn't stick even if they managed to apply it.
Penn State is getting repeatedly punched in the face with this reality as their coaching search goes further and further off the rails.
I expect as time goes on, both those programs are going to watch as they fall further and further from relevance in college football - the things they need to change are so deeply embedded in the culture of the schools that I don't think its possible.
