It would be hilarious if they hired Jimbo again.

I think FSU fans significantly overrate where FSU falls in desirability. They have a ton of challenges and sky high expectations which almost guarantee failure. Just like Penn State. I have no idea why anyone would go there or Penn State because of that.

Translation:

- The Son of a gun sucks but we cannot afford to buy him out.
- If we could afford the buy out, we still cannot afford a great new HC.
- Even if we could afford the buy out and a new HC, there is no opportunity for landing a great coach.
- AD Alford is in direct alignment with the BoT because the @_$& has overspent on everything, freaked out giving Norvell the ridiculous buy out, and spends like a drunk sailor on shore leave, or else.
- We can tolerate another year for the recruit's sake.

Just curious if FSU can explain where the money would come from to pay off Norvell and crew, then hire a much more expensive coach with a better buyout clause and a more expensive staff. Donors have already balked at buying out Norvell and crew. The AD is in the red and has no plan to manage themselves within a budget. The State will not cover the school like Jersey covers Rutgers. Where is the cash magically coming from?

If the government gets into the NIL game, I hope the slip in a requirement that athletics departments must operate within their means and that the AD cannot exceed a percentage of the university's revenue and ban all cross over funding (charging another department for an AD employee), as well as severe penalties including the "death penalty" for any violation or criminal acts. Basically, what the NCAA should be doing.

Sorry for the rant, FSU is just one anecdotal evidence of a systemic failure that is college sports. Purpose and integrity have long been gone...

IIRC, FSU has a incorporated, high-roller booster organization going back years that could somehow legally dump money into the program.

I have heard similarly. The real questions are how many high-roller boosters are there and where do they draw the line? The money was withheld from buying out Norvell. Either the money is not available or the money people are not willing to allow Alford to control the money based on his spending behaviors (includes negotiations). I suspect the latter or a combination of the two. Regardless, FSU's AD is deep in the red - some of it necessary modernizing of the stadium, a lot of it foolish spending and negotiations (buyouts). The money will not flow when the real earners see it being spent foolishly. See the Big Ten schools not named UM or USC.

I suspect that Alford lacks financial discipline and the money people are withholding major donations until Alford either rights the financial ship of the FSU Athletics Department or there is a new, financially responsible adult running the AD. Most people with big money earned it, they do not want fools managing their earned money. With Alford's extension of Norvell and the ridiculous buyout, it is hard to believe that he has real management and negotiation skills, especially when we discover that Alford was secretly trying to woo Kiffin

Let's not forget that Alford sold the FSU BOT and money people on the con that FSU could get out of the ACC quick and easily and join the SEC. FSU remains in the ACC. Though the GOR and exit fees were renegotiated FSU cannot leave anytime soon, paid large legal fees, lost money, lost good will (neither the SEC nor B1G wanted FSU as a partner based on Alford's conduct). Simply put, Alford does not give off vibes of being a prudent executive, Alford's recent track record is less than impressive.

I expect as time goes on, both those programs are going to watch as they fall further and further from relevance in college football - the things they need to change are so deeply embedded in the culture of the schools that I don't think its possible.

Penn St needed to be with eastern schools, like Pitt, BC, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Rutgers, Connecticut, and add Louisville, and Miami, Virginia Tech, and Cincinnati. That would have been a good conference for football and basketball.

Yeah…it’d be interesting to see how an east coast conference would have impacted all the realignment over the last few years. I think Penn State would have ended up in the Big Ten anyway - but we might also have 6 fairly stable conferences right now.

My observation was more about their board structure. There’s too many people on it with wildly different agendas, so they can’t get anything done in the public meetings. The result is factions split off and have illegal private meetings which turn into a scandal when they come to light. The university org structure is completely dysfunctional -it’s both part of why Franklin was let go and why they can’t find a replacement.
