You make it sound like it's an option. It isn't. Federal law specifies when you must bring your facility in compliance and this is one of those times.

Absolutely. I answered the way I did because some people made it sound like it was impractical, irrelevant and a forced legal burden having nothing to do with the University's mission.

I submitted my design.

You and Xc84 should obviously collaborate on the exoatmospheric design aspects of "Phase III".

That would suck. Maybe Sala forgot how tight it is with a large crowd. Huge missed opportunity if they don't open up the north-south sides... and let in natural light with more glass. Not to mention there will probably be wheelchair-only express lanes.

Typical.

If that design is legit, can someone explain how they plan to use the existing dome infrastructure to support the new roof? The board engineers were saying that much of the cost would have to go towards establishing a new perimeter just for the support trusses... or something.

Yeah, me too. Everything from joining the two buildings as one and using the current north Archbold entrance as a Quad-front gate to the stadium. But I hear this has been scaled back.

It may very well have been scaled back (for now) because of $$$$ but the desire from day 1 has been to connect the Dome with The Arch. Since The Arch will be the new student wellness center and house everything related to the students physical and mental health I believe that connective corridor would have healthy food choices that can be accessed during games.

If that rendering is legit, or close to it, I don't think that is all happening in this phase.
It would definitely have to be roof over one offseason, and then the next offseason would have to be everything else.

Well, reverse-engineering this (inadvertent) announcement, why would a U design partner release such a detailed concept drawing of the ThunderDome less than a month before construction was to start ... if that wasn't the final design?

Were they planning to make wholesale changes in the next week or two?

I would think the Walters Group would know what the footprint is, no?
They didn't realize all of the perfessers hadn't signed off yet?

They aren't the designer, Populus is the architect, Thornton -Tomasetti is the structural engineer, Turner is the GC. It looks like these guys will be assisting hardware engineering of the roof support elements and doing the fabrication.

Looks like they might be looking for some experienced welders.

I'm going to use the same tactic that we use for all expansion stories, coaching issues and early entry into the draft: "Where there's smoke, there's fire." Or is it "The silence is deafening."

This build-out could be pretty cool depending on what it houses.

View attachment 64703

Part of that "overhang" is over a driveway between the dome and Archbold. I believe that's where an ambulance would access the wellness center.

So that drawing is showing a connection to Archbold and a new building (hotel?) on the west end of the Dome.

in that pic that building is a parking garage.

I was originally thinking this is a view from Irving, as you can see a foundation at the base of the facility. But what is the tall building behind the arena then?

That surely has to be the new hotel.

Note that the terrain slopes from right to left. That would also only make sense if this view was looking west, towards I 81.

Looks like they added support columns to the north and south, where the load bearing walls are. You can see an expansion on the northeast corner of the building.

I am assuming they are showing how the eastern wall on and above the 200 and 300 sections will be open to light via the use of EFTE. Cool. Probably won't be able to do it on the west side because of the hotel.

No expansion on the southeastern corner on this drawing, which differs from the other one.

Surprised at the relative flatness of the roof. Looks like they are planning to use EFTE in the triangles formed between the steel, facing north and south. I would think this design would allow snow to pile up...thought EFTE was going to be used a lot more to help encourage the snow to slide off (like in Minneapolis).

Sure looks like they are not planning on expanding the concourses on the north and south sides of the facility. There will be no new concourse on the third level either.

It will be a really strange look with an uber modern roof, some open walls and a huge expanse of drag concrete on the sides. Hope they decide to address this in a phase 2 project down the road.

Are we sure that's looking at it from Irving? I'm thinking the other side looking towards Irving which would make that tall building the expanded parking garage seen in the other photo.

I don't think the multi-story building on the west end is a parking garage. It's not wide enough for rows of parking and enough room for two driving lanes. It's either a hotel or a new sports management school or combination of both.
