Well, I guess you could also look at MG and say, "There's a guy who got very little playing time in the ACC, decided he couldn't cut it with Duke and transferred out."
I'm not arguing that MG shouldn't get a shot at the 2, because he will. I just don't care for the fortune teller approach of deciding before competition, who's going to start. My guess is that MG and Cooney will end up getting about equal minutes.

It's not a fortune teller approach. Cooney couldn't earn minutes amidst a regressing Brandon Triche. MG was stuck behind Austin Rivers on a down season for Duke where they had to give Rivers full playing time to stay relevant.

He obviously had a tough season, but I don't get all the Cooney hate. It may not turn out to be an appropriate comparison, but in his freshman year, Rautins shot 38% from the field, and 33% from three, where Cooney was 32% from the floor and 27% from distance. Those are terrible numbers, but given that his problems seem to relate more to confidence than ability, I'm not ready to throw in the towel on him quite yet. If he can slow down a little on the court, and not rush things so much, I think he can be the lights out shooter we all thought he would be when he stepped on campus.

See, I don't get all the Cooney love.

The cynic could say people like him because we want to believe in white guys that look like white guys (ie, not Devo).

He's tough to evaluate. He fizzled on what was touted as his one sure fire skill. Otherwise, he did some decent things and played better in some regards than expected. I have no idea how good he is or might be. I think Gbinije has a bigger upside though, for no reasons other than because he's bigger and was rated a little bit higher coming out of highschool.

I'm kind of with Sandman on this one. I think Cooney did everything well EXCEPT for shoot...which unfortunately was the one thing we needed from him most last year. He's a much better defender than anyone could have expected, in large part because he's got good size and is more athletic than most white players who get labeled as "shooters," and had good anticipatory instincts. He takes it to the rack better than I expected, too. I just don't agree with the poster above who claimed that he performed like a DIII player--far from it. But the shooting in his "rookie" season was absurd--no way to candy coat that.

If he straightens out his shooting, he'll have a big impact over these next three years. Will it be enough to displace Gbinije from the starting lineup? I don't envision that, but he could still play big minutes and be a key performer. Again, if he shows that unlike this year he can knock down some shots.

Yeah, that's the thing. I think he's a better overall basketball player than we thought. Mostly I think we expected a one trick pony. The shooting was just so bad in comparison to expectation.

I hope the shooting thing is a confidence issue and not an ability issue. Lots of freshmen struggle to hit 3s, it's not unusual. There's struggling, and then there's 27% though.

I think that's very fair--agree across the board.

He might be right here, but I can't help but think of Rothstein as a personified version of the dog from "Up." He gets excited so easily and it's pretty amusing.

Cooney played 438 minutes in 39 games and shot 28 for 105 from deep, with probably half of those minutes coming in meaningful situations against our better opponents.

That's a really small sample. I'm willing to see more of him as a redshirt sophomore before passing judgment on what kind of shooting he will provide this season or over the course of his career.

Not a huge sample size but he was taking one per every 4min he played and missing at such a rate that it limited his minutes. He wasn't getting pulled because he played badly in other areas. He had to go to the bench because other teams generally played off of him so he had to shot and he didn't produce. This bogged an already not so great offensive team down even more. Even though Triche shot porrley teams still guarded him out there because they knew he could get hot and kill them like @ Lville 1st half. I'm in the if he can make his 3's he can be a great asset for us group, BUT I am also in the SHOW ME you can group. I hope its just him needing to get to a comfort level on the court so he knocks them down pretty regularly. Still he may not be a huge contributor to his Junior or Senior season, nothing wrong with that plenty of guys have done that at SU and been very important pieces of their teams those final 2 season. Andy being the best comparison recently and similarity of player type and position.

I just think if he's out there regularly for 15-25 minutes a game that he will get into a better shooting rhythm and gain confidence/consistency with his stroke. With Triche and MCW ahead of him last season, there was no way he was going to see consistent minutes and avoid a quick hook. This season will be different, and if he continues to play hard defensively, the minutes should be there for him.

Meh. It's not that small a sample.

I agree with you though that it's too soon to pass judgment on what kind of shooting he'll provide over his career.

In regards to next season though, I'm more confident in Gbinije being effective in the minutes he gets.

Very possible especially if its an issue with being comfortable. It be a great thin for us if he could hit 38% or better. That being said he will have competeition and plenty of it so if he wants to play 15-20 minutes I hope he uses that to say being comfortable I need to make shot to play so I will.

38%+ from deep would be outstanding for someone who projects to be a volume 3-point shooter. SU hasn't had too many guys do that. If he see serious minutes, I'd hope to see him knock down a 2-3 per game, but I'm not expecting 38% next season.

If he plays more I expect him to actually shoot less. Once he is established as a threat teams will play him tighter which will limit his opertunities but open the floor for everyone. Perhaps 38% is very optimistic but if you are a 3pt specialist its not asking too much. 2.5 a game would be perfect IMO.

One of the reasons for the small sample size though, is that he played so poorly that he didn't warrant time. He also played scared, like he was overwhelmed. He had a lot of bad misses. Showed no ability to drive. But did hustle on D.

I don't hate Cooney. I want to see the guy succeed. I just don't want to think he is the best SU can put in that spot next year. Sure guys improve but he has too far to go IMO. I would hope that if MG were available last year that he would have been seeing time over TC. TC was the worst third guard we have had in years.

It's not hate, but hope. I hope we have a better player for that spot than TC. Even extrapolating an improved TC is not enough.

Well said.

We're an elite program now.

We have great recruits, and a great transfer. We have players who could potentially be great now (MG and Bus)..

I see no reason for a Cooney project part 2.

Nobody is talking a Cooney project. Frankly a distasteful use of words.
All anyone wants is to have the player than shows the best quality to be on the floor. Let's wait and see how that turns out.

I like to call Cooney, Bambi.

Can we all agree that if Cooney hits his open looks with a better efficiency than last season, plays tough defense and opens up the floor en route to another final four that everyone will be happy?

Look, I know he did not do what he was supposed to last year. Believe it or not, I'm a realist. ;)
But the good news is that this year, we have one of Buss, BJ and MikeG to support that position.

I love the guy's heart, and I wish him well as I do of all of over players, but if it doesn't work out and that really could happen, we won't necessarily be worrying about SG as much as if we don't have an extra guy that can handle point duties.

Besides, CJ, Grant, Keita...all of these guys are coming back and they contributed to an incredible run.
I guarantee that one of Rak, DC2 and Cooney will make a tremendous leap in production. Everyone criticizes these 3 guys, and for some good reason. But every one of you should believe in all three because one or more of them just might surprise you.

As a realist (wink-wink), I'm thinking that all of them will surprise.

Rothstein has said on Twitter a couple of times that we should think of Roberson as the next Trevor Ariza.

I personally thought that the game was too fast for Cooney on the offensive end. Loved his effort on D but every time he got the ball on offense he didn't really seem to know what to do with it. He just needs to go with the flow of the game and not over think things. I'm hoping he adjusts to the game and becomes the 3-pt threat he was touted to be. I'm sure JB will play whoever gives the team the most production so I'm not really worried about how starts.
