Gary Parrish, We got in hot water with Syracuse fans

Parrish did a good job there. Can't disagree with anything per se. He feels we deserve #1 right now which is correct but his opinion is that we won't win the NCAA's which is OK because it is his opinion even if I disagree or others. He gave us a lot of kudo's and just feels like we don't have that 1 superstar most teams that win it all have. While we have a lot of players playing very good and some playing great, do we really have a Carmelo? A guy that can carry the team on his back all by himself when needed? A guy that can score inside and outside and rack up the rebounds? A guy that commands so much attention from the other team it automatically makes everyone better around him? Not sure we do and that is why Carmelo was an Olympian and the 3rd pick in the draft after 1 season. We're a great team this year but surely not a lock for anything and that was Parrish's point I think.
Parrish was on the right track, but it is not the lack of a superstar that is a problem, it is the lack of a low post option. All of JB's best teams - every team that has made it past the Sweet 16 - has had a low post scorer to go to in the grind it out possessions that come with increasing frequency in each round of the NCAAT. 1987 and 89 had Rony; 1996 had Otis; 2003 had Melo. I will always believe that 2010 would have made it past Butler if Arinze had been available. For all the weapons that this year's squad has available, a consistent low post option is glaringly absent. That is why the half court offense is so ordinary.

Agree with that too. While Forth wasn't a scorer, Hak and Melo did a lot of damage inside. We don't get that right now from our centers or PF's. CJ a little but not like Hak and Melo did or others in previous years. And I agree, I still maintain to this day if AO had been healthy, I think we win it all and definitely beat Butler.

100% agree, said to the wife as soon as he went down and I heard him scream, "Well there goes the national championship" no doubt in my mind with AO we were the best team in the nation. They just had the right stuff when healthy. Since 1987, if all the chips fell into place JB would have three national championships under his belt, one more than Robert Montgomery Knight!

Maybe we should have a seperate board for lonely singles who want to find like minded Orange partners.
It sure would've avoided a lot of fights in the TexanMark Household LOL

CJ is an interior scorer, but he isn't a low post option. Maybe he will surprise me in the last half of the regular season, but I don't think Melo will develop that portion of his game until next year. I think James could be a very good weapon at the high post, but he won't get the opportunity - JB is going to give every minute in close games to Joseph and live or die with a perimeter offense.

Hard to argue. OSU and UNC's ceilings do seem higher than ours.
That is not necessarily true. IF (big if) Dion continues to excell and Melo's continues to progress, then SU's ceiling is pretty high too.

UNC and OSU can throw the ball into the post...and can also count on a pretty good perimeter offense as well. I like that combination better come tournament time than us relying on getting run outs and hoping we continue to hit our jump shots. Just one man's opinion. I still think we are very good, but if we run into a Wisconsin or team that slows it down on us, we might get into a dog fight if we go cold from the perimeter. We have no option on the block and a smart defensive team is not going to let us run and gun.

Rony left after 1988, DC played center on the '89 team. But I agree with your point that a post scorer is needed to advance deep. Fab could still progress this year. Certainly next year if he returns plus having DC2. I think if DW and Fab return, next year might be even better.

We'll get a preview when we play at ND.
Going back to when Haragody got injured, Brey has turned ND into a milk-the-clock outfit that limits posessions in the half-court.
They take care of the ball & dictate tempo very well. Should give us an idea of what to expect come Tourney time, though against teams with more talent.

We remind me of the carolina team that won it all a few years back. Loaded with depth, lots of future NBA talent there top pick went 18th. THey lost a few close ones in conference play went one and out maybe resting for the NCAA tournament, but won every game by 12 come march.

agree with almost everything said by Parrish... we deserve to be number one based on season results so far ... might NC, KY and OSU be a little better... probably... can we win a championship ... to be determined on the court

Here's what I think of Gary's analyses. He doesn't see a superstar and believes a team needs one to run through the NCAAs and win the final game. In 2003, all the analysts said that you need senior leadership to win the NC, and that Syracuse, lead by freshmen, would not have the experience or leadership to win it all.

That kinda changed as we went through the tournament unblemished. And as analysts saw how our freshmen played they became believers.

Its a natural inclination to lean on past history (i.e, needing a superstar, go-to-guy, or whatever) to make an opinion on what is required for a team to win the NC. So, for that reason, I have no issues with Gary's analysis. Let's just prove that it can be done with an extremely talented, deep and balanced team that shares the "sugar"!

So the common thread, other than the absence of higher profile road games, seems to involve a perception that we don't pass the "sniff test" with our skeptics. It is almost like Billy Beane and his more objective analysis versus the traditional scouts who based much of their evaluations on "the Look" of players in Moneyball. Now, with Kentucky there are likely more future pros on the Wildcat roster but with clearly less experience than SU. But with Ohio State, other than Sullinger as a dominant player, is there anyone on the Buckeyes roster who is heads above our top top players? Perhaps UNC has a better balance of apparent pros in the making and experience but they haven't exactly been a juggernaut so far this year. I would have no argument with anyone who says that we are equal contenders for the Championship as these three teams but just cannot see how some assert we are a notch below them.

Will this board be available for those looking to maybe trade their partner in? My wife is a Tar Heel fan.
