Geno Thorpe - COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE

Combo guard, yes.. but really fine tuned his PG skills with Assistant Coach and former NBA PG, Rod Strickland at South Florida. Sign me up for Geno to run the Cuse point 2017-2018. Bye Frank.

A big question is if you bring in someone to start over Frank is it worth keeping him around with his history. Is the staff comfortable with Washington backing up both spot and only having 3 guards?

Does anyone know anything about him? I live in South Florida, however as a born and raised Cuse fan and an FGCU alum I never pay any attention at all to USF.

I do know that USF was dreadful to watch rather it be in person or on tv.. they won 8 games I think this year.. I'm not blaming geno. But his numbers can't be justified with a team like that

Three guards is mighty risky. One injury and your guards are playing the entire game. That's why it's essential that we land another guard, preferably one good enough to start at the point.

I would say yes. Both Thorpe and Ayala can play either guard spot and are good all around guards. Taking just one puts us at 4 guards taking both is a pretty strong signal that the staff has moved on from Frank.
I'd sign up for that.

Can never have enough guards. Hopefully we will have enough and not be have to play anyone 40 a game so they wear down at the end of the season.
Guard play can get you very far in the tourney.

another question: will he be able to pick up the zone and defend competently? the lesson I take from last season is that we can survive crappy point guard play but not crappy defense at the top of the zone
We had both when Frank played. When Gillon added some offensive punch, we played better. He wasn't a good defensive fit, in fact he was probably as bad a fit as you can find. Thorpe would be much better, even if he's a bit slow to pick up the nuances. I'd take him in a heartbeat at this point.

The way I look at it, he can't be much worse as a PG/ball handler than Frank was last year. He has experience with the ball in his hands a lot, and while he's more a Triche/Rautins PG for us, his all-around game would be such a huge improvement for our offense over the current lineup.

For those that haven't seen much of Thorpe, here are some looks of him doing a little bit of everything-- scoring, facilitating, defending...

Well, I've seen enough. I stick up for FH a lot, and think he will improve, but offer the keys to this kid. Thorpe, and Battle would be a great backcourt.

I ran into another former USF player a couple of days ago, Zach LeDay, he was working out for the Clippers... I'm sure most of you remember what he did to us in Blacksburg this year; lets get this kid now...

I wonder how freshman like Battle and Ennis figured it out pretty quickly. GMac; Edelin, Flynn and others too.
because freshman have 4 fewer years of bad coaching/bad habits to unlearn

Just making sure I get this: you think our coaches suck?
no; I think we get grad transfers who have picked up 4 years of bad habits & bad fundamentals from programs with relatively bad coaches - a given because >90% of college coaches are bad compared to Boeheim. it's why a freshman can pick up the system faster than a 5th year senior transferring in from somewhere else. Even a regular transfer, who gets the benefit of a year of practice before playing, is in a better situation to know the system than a grad transfer.

Oh, got ya. I knew I was blanking on what you were trying to say. "Unlearn." That's the key. Yes, this makes perfect sense. I think that's why we are trying to get Hughes. A year to learn the zone would make him good to go and comfortable in the 2-3 in 2018-19.

Yep. The knock on Gillon before this year was he didn't always play defense and that's exactly what happened here.

Do we know anything about Thorpe on the defensive end? We need a random USF fan to come here and give a scouting report.
