Geno Thorpe - COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE

Totally agree if this plays out. Have to pass on Euro dude, but there are plenty of pickings from the 18 class and we'll be fine.

Agreed, if we get Tucker then pass on Euro and try to get Thorpe to help stabilize the perimeter in 17-18. We'll be fine at the 3-4 spot this year with Brissett, Moyer and Tucker with Thompson and Sidibe maybe being able to step in in a pinch on the wing.

Plenty of guys we can add in 2018 that will help the program on the wing so let's put it on the back burner and address a weakness going into next season.

What is with this ideological shift from the staff that we don't need a point guard or any depth for that matter?

Our backcourt is:

Battle - stud
Howard - no clue
Washington - developmental/not ready

I guess since we have about 40 frontcourt players, they feel Tucker, should he commit here, can be the 4th guard, but man.. this thought process is pretty frustrating.

Agreed and that's why I believe you need Thorpe more than Euro dude.

It's more about Solejaz being to good to pass on IMO. He visited when it looked like Tucker was going to Duke. His visit changed things and then Tucker left Duke and the buzz was SU again. The staff knows PG is an issue and wanted to add guard depth, AA then GT both combo guards. Tucker can play some 2 so yes he is the 4th guard.

Maybe Euro dude is really good and is too good to pass up for another guy just for one year.
Maybe but it seems like when ever we make a deep run in the tourney it's cause of our guard play. Don't see us doing that with current line-up, even if Tucker comes.

I posted this in the Hughes thread yesterday before we got some JT good vibes. I obviously don't want to post this again...

Well we can look at it this way: it's obvious we do feel the need for another guard since we are looking at two combos in Thorpe and Ayala. We have offers out to Ayala, Tucker, Thorpe. All of those guys could fill that need because they're capable of playing the 2. Only Ayala and Thorpe can play the 2 and the lead guard spot. They are essentially the same recruit as far as their potential roles. I have to guess one of our big selling points to Tucker is that he can play huge minutes at the 3 and also some solid minutes at the 2.

Dolezaj can only play the forward spots. He's 6'9" or so. He clearly won't affect Ayala or Thorpe. They don't play the same position. He can play a little at the 3 but wouldn't take minutes away from Tucker. He's talented but very raw. I think we will land Dolezaj soon and that will give us another guy the staff thinks can help us on the perimeter. That might be true but we'd still need more scoring and shooting, so we'd grab one of those other guys too. Dolezaj will probably be on board within the next week or so. Regardless, I'm very optimistic.

Summing up: I don't think we are 100% confident in the lead guard position but we are confident enough in it that we don't need to pursue another pure lead. If we get Tucker, he sures up the 3 and could be play some 2. Ayala is a long shot to go '17 and a lot of this is moot anyway, since we are all waiting on Tucker. The dominoes fall once Tucker announces.

I do like that we have some options, since all of these guys can play two positions. If we don't get Tucker: OB, MM and Dolezaj battle for minutes at the 3.

I know I went far beyond your question but I wanted to think out loud about all of these possibilities.

PS: Sid Wilson could come into play but to me, he doesn't solve enough of our problems. He's a 3/4 but he's not a great shooter. That's why I think he might wind up elsewhere.

I get the impression if we get Tucker we still would take Euro dude. I think Thorpe is the 3rd choice. Doubt most of us feel that way, but I think that's what the coaches are thinking.

I think that the Euro guy is the backup plan for Tucker. I bet they really like him but its obvious we want a PG and a SF

I think Thorpe will allow us to use him for one year and pickup up Ayala next year.

:rolling:

Funny, guys, but patently false. I just got a message from that fan, Danielle. SHE says that Thorpe is a solid defender but occasionally has lapses. His lateral movement is solid but she wants him to get his hands up more often. Danielle says hi with this pic but doesn't want to post. She's just a lurker. She is enough of a Thorpe fan that she may consider rooting for SU next year if we land Geno.

See if Danielle has any years of eligibility left. We need to recruit her. I'll give Gmac a break on this one and take one for the team, and lead the effort.

But good info on Thorpe. Been intrigued by him and really think he can give us some solid minutes and experience with a younger and inexperienced roster.

So strange. Don't we need another guard?
