Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Hey, guys, just because we’re friends it doesn’t mean we can’t disagree. This is a bball forum, after all!

Okay, I’ll just go back to posting inane comments and song lyrics, if the muse ever hits me again.
Do not be afraid to post what you want. Ever.

I feel like I read a copy paste of what OP said already once before. Not sure if same OP or not. Gmac is like barely 40, I went to school with him.

IF he keeps working his way up he could make his way back to Cuse down the road maybe even 10-15 years from now. He's got plenty of time. No reason to rush.

Well, if you needed a coach to beat LeMoyne, Hofstra and Merrimack in a given weekend, it is probably a push. But give GMac several more years time. Agree new blood is needed that is experienced at a much higher level of hoops.

Feels like you may have a story here? Did anything happen between him and the staff/red at the end?
Gerry tried to leave SU the last year JB was the coach when he found out Autry was going to be coach. That entire year (it was known AA was going to be the coach), Gerry was clearly upset he didn’t get the job but he did not handle it well behind closed doors with the staff, players and athletic department. It made for a really really weird year.

MSOrange I’m with you on guys like that. Anyone that wins like Cignetti can act however they want and I would be all for someone like that as our coach.
This board makes it out to be like Gerry is undefeated at Siena. Beating Maine and longwood doesn’t mean anything and barely being above .500 as a coach doesn’t mean he should be coaching SU. I do think he’s a good coach and prob better than Red, but there needs to be a clear break from history unless they hire Melo as the coach. That would be my only exception

I bet a large amount of regular fans -- meaning those who don't post here like us lunatics -- probably want Gerry as the next HC. So, your POV is far from a wild one.

Oye...Love Melo, but that has Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin written all over it.

And - Ewing was a successful and well
regarded NBA assistant coach for a while, before getting the Hoyas gig.

Melo has the same amount of HC experience that I do.

Dude is living his best life right now -
Why would he want to give that up for a HC gig?

Not saying Melo ever would but there’s some folks that want that. They know the staff he would bring in and the way he would recruit. But I have it at a .0001% chance of happening.

I’m a big fan of the steady climb higher with success along the way. John Beilein was nearly the perfect example - Lemoyne, Canisius, Richmond, WVU, Michigan and eventually the NBA

As other posters have said - if his name wasn’t Gerry, the Siena coach would never get a real look.
Before Le Moyne, don't forget Newfane HS, Erie Community College, and Nazareth College. Quite a progression.

Jim was awkwardly so. I tell the story to everyone but at the 96 elite 8, boeheim didn’t even turn to say hi in an elevator to the buses to the arena. Personality of a snail to anyone below him. This is 1 of 100 interactions. I’m sure cto will say otherwise but she’s a booster and important.

When we got to McNichol, we ran into Roy Williams. He slapped me on the back and said “can’t wait for this game! What a day!” A real nice authentic guy.

No idea why I wanted to present this other than to say boeheim had a negative personality. Gerry is cocky and probably
Carries himself much better than Ichabod Boeheim.
Didn’t you read the old Syracuse article that on game day his family doesn’t even talk to him before a game? He always drove himself alone to games at the dome and followed a solitary ritual each game to prepare. He was always intense and totally focused on game days so I’m not surprised at all.

Agree with your 2nd paragraph. Appreciate the info in the first paragraph and I can't say I'm surprised. To be a successful high level Division 1 player like both Red and GMac were, you have to be competitive as hell. Obviously there can only be one head coach, so not surprised he was upset.

To read a behind the scenes, tell all book of SU basketball would be interesting :)

Not officially announced, but it's looking like Mike Haynie.
Thanks. That's who I thought you might be referring to. I think that's been speculated for a few years. Do you (we) know his view of college athletics? If he is more interested in it, maybe he makes ADJW a special assistant to the Chancellor and appoints a new AD.

or maybe whomever Melo wants to be the coach?

maybe. or maybe we wouldn't want to read it.

What might have made it more difficult for Gerry is knowing (or at least thinking) that JB thought he should be the next coach.

Thanks. Why did Gerry stay for Autry's first year? Was it because he couldn't find a HC job or did others (e.g., ADJW, JB, and/or AA) prevail on him to stay? Or maybe both?

Do I think Gerry would be a better coach than Red? Yes I do.
Do I think Gerry is the best coach Syracuse can get? No I don’t.

Our next head coach will make or break our national relevancy. We are already on the edge of being forgotten. The kids we are recruiting now weren’t even alive during our Championship. They probably barely remember Carmelo Anthony.

We have to get this turned around in a big way. We cannot risk our program on a risky hire. This will have to be a grand slam home run.

First time I have heard this and I am all shook up.
Don't be; I'm sure he has a big ego that rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but that doesn't mean he's not a good dude overall. Sounds like he was in a really tough situation, and even if he didn't handle it well, that's not the defining measure of him. He probably saw what was going to happen and believed he'd do better. His frustration was/is probably 1000x that of the typical frustrated poster here.

I crossed paths with him a few times when we were both students and I lived near him, a lifetime ago. He came off as pretty well-rounded for a kid of his stature and fame on campus. Never rubbed me the wrong way. He definitely wasn't as social as some of the other players I knew, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Seemed very focused. In 2005 I was sure he'd be a HC someday; assertive personality when he'd open up, but not a jerk.

Hear me out. Gerry knows how to be a coach. He has proven his chops at Siena. In two years he has taken them from a 4 win season to a winning season with a team that might make the tourney. He should have been chosen over Red but politics forced him out. As far as I know, he went graciously and left the town that he and his family truly loved.

I know many here think we should get some kind of established coach from a major program. But taking a coach from a mid-major, one who is hungry and has the coaching chops, has proven to be quite successful in college basketball. Or even football. Look at Indiana!

Gerry is an outstanding person who is uniquely qualified to be the head of our faltering program. He inspires loyalty and confidence. He bleeds Orange. He is beloved. And I believe he has what it takes to lead our program back to real gosh-darned good-ness, if not greatness. Let’s go, Orange!

Happy New Year.
No ,the next coach needs to be someone not associated in any way with JB.

When it comes to recruiting, you are your last 7 years. Let that sink in. Why would any youngster today dream of playing for Cuse?

I respect you Beadle, but I have to vehemently disagree with this premise. Gerry hasn’t proven anything yet.

We need a proven commodity from the mid major level but someone from a higher level mid-major like the A-10 is the way to go. Josh Schertz, who has demonstrated himself to be a winner at multiple different schools and different levels, is the answer, imo.
